I always imagined him more of a Tartarus kinda dude, minus the incompetence.

Jonas would probably know what the situation was a few years ago.

Also, the Asschen are conquering pieces of galaxy themselves? How neat
Strange that so little of Earth's population escaped, makes me wonder how much early warning they had. Although, it's still in the millions of people, and probably the very best of us.

Exactly. Everything up to now is exactly the same for the future SG-1, only what happens from here on out will be different if he succeeds in changing the timeline.

And why not? With the Alliance taking the brunt of the invasion, other powers more-or-less have free reign to do what they please...

They also lost quite a few people in those 5 years. Take a look at the total population figures for Earth and the Jaffa and you'll see what I mean.

                              13x19 "The Time Traveler"
Synopsis: A visitor from the future warns of the impending destruction of the Alliance at the hands of the Der'kal, begging SG-1 to find a way to turn the tide of war before it is too late.
                              Spoiler:

Earth's Alpha Site shakes as stray energy blasts strike down from above, splitting the mountain the facility resides under and sending up a cloud of rock and dust. A squadron of F-302s dogfights hopelessly with Der'kal starfighters in the upper atmosphere, trying to avoid the massive hail of plasma fire coming from an alien fleet waiting just higher up in orbit. This is the end of the Tau'ri, their final last stand.

Two DSC-304s and a BC-303 dive in and out of the alien formation of cruisers, hammering at the enemy shields with all their weaponry. But one by one, the three Earth vessels are blown apart, and at last the F-302s are all destroyed, as well. The alien fighters all head below, helping in the destruction of humanity's only remaining stronghold. Inside the facility itself, Jonas Quinn is desperately trying to activate the stargate, watching a timer tick down the seconds nearby. Sweat pours down his face, and he has a noticeable scar running across his left cheek. His eyes look sullen and tired, and his once-indomitable spirit feels... shattered. Regardless, though, he doesn't waver from this final task, even as explosions nearby kill marines and scientists trying to escape the carnage.

A PA announcement informs Jonas that Der'kal gunships have begun landing outside, and enemy troops will be within the Alpha Site in moments. He's running out of time, and he anxiously watches the clock, reading his GDO, as he waits for the time to come...

Suddenly, the blast doors to the gate room are blown away, and Der'kal warriors fire on Jonas and the few solders that remain with him. Outside, two more gunships can be seen landing and offloading their compliment of alien warriors, all of whom immediately rush into the base. But Jonas has all the time he needs, and just as the timer ticks down to zero, he hits the activation dome on the DHD and sprints forward. The mariens left alive pin down the enemy with supression fire, watching triumphantly as the Langaran scientist punches in his IDC and runs through the gate. One of the nearest alien soldiers spots him, though, and flings a marine out of its way as it dashes up the ramp after Jonas, leaping through the event horizon just before it dissipates.

Light-years away, in the depths of the International Stargate Command, another active stargate is shutting down, and an impressive group of dignitaries approaches Dr. Danielle Talbot and Dr. Daniel Jackson, who wait at the foot of the ramp with wide smiles. This is the Langaran Coalition Government's diplomatic envoy, which in this case includes their lead scientist, former SG-1 member Jonas Quinn. Jackson offers his old friend a warm welcome back to Earth as the other Kellownan, Teranian, and Andari representatives are lead by a marine to the briefing room.

Talbot, not having actually met Jonas yet, greets him and tells him how much she's been told about his exploits by SG-1, particularly Samantha Carter, who seems to be quite fond of him. The remaining trio turns to head upstairs themselves when, suddenly, the stargate activates behind them. Walter immediately closes the iris, and the defense team prepares to fend off an attack, but everyone is stunned when an IDC comes through on the emergency channel... especially because the IDC belongs to none-other than Jonas himself.

Not quite understanding, but fearing that perhaps the Langarans are in desperate need of help (but could only find Jonas' IDC to send, not a general one), Talbot orders the iris opened and the marines at the ready in case she's wrong. Everyone waits for a heart-wrenching second, but then the wormhole flashes brightly, and a man runs through. Almost immediately after, though, comes a Der'kal warrior, who raises his rifle and prepares to fire. The defense team guns him down as soon as they realize what he is, but not before a single plasma bolt is fired into the newly-arrived man's back. The human cries out in agony and falls to the ground.

At once, Jonas and Daniel rush forward to try and help the injured man, with Talbot already calling for a med team. But as they turn him over, both unharmed men jump back, shocked to see the face of Jonas Quinn staring back at them (who will now be referred to as Alt-Jonas). Just before Alt-Jonas passes out from his wound, he grabs his counterpart's arm and whispers something. When he finally slips into painful sleep, Daniel asks what he said, to which Jonas replies, "He said, 'Apocalypse. By the gods, Apocalypse...'"

Some time later, Jackson, Jonas, and Talbot are standing outside the infirmary, watching intently as Dr. Lam and her staff try to stabilize Alt-Jonas' condition. Col. Carter and Mitchell arrive after a moment, with Vala coming up the rear. After a suitable pause, Talbot informs the team that she's contacted the Pentagon and UNHQ and has asked for orders on how best to proceed. Lam has already confirmed via DNA test that their visitor is, in fact, Jonas Quinn, but muscular tearing and other factors indicate that he's a small bit older than the one they know today. Mitchell, surprised, asks if she's saying the other one is from the future, to which Sam nods and confirms. But just how he managed to get himself back here is still a puzzling question.

Finally, Dr. Lam emerges fro mthe infirmary and says that Alt-Jonas' condition is under control. He's still in critical danger due to damage to his spinal column, but imminent death is no longer a concern. That said, she explains, there's little doubt that she can keep him alive forever, and the plasma blast he was hit with did leave a fatal wound. She estimates he has about a day left, but at the very least he should be lucid and conscious for most of it, if in an insane amount of pain. And that's the other thing; Alt-Jonas has asked her not, under any circumstances, to save his life. He wants to die here, in this base, and nowhere else.

This revelation takes the team offguard, and Vala asks Lam if she's hearing things. But Caroline she tried to convince Alt-Jonas otherwise three times already, and the only purpose he claims to have left is passing on what he can to the ISGC and making the most of all those that had to die to get him here. Not seeing much choice, Talbot says okay for the time being, but says she reserves the right to overrule their guest at anytime, regardless of his desires. Lam nods and leads her, SG-1, and Jonas into the room, motioning for them to gather around the bed farthest from the door.

As they get their first good look at Alt-Jonas, he also gets his first good look at them. He clearly supresses a gasp when his eyes move to Sam and Daniel, and tears shine in them when he sees just how strong and healthy his younger self is. Talbot moves to ask him what's wrong, but he shakes her hand off and blinks a few times to clear his head. Alt-Jonas explains that he doesn't have much time and he knows it, and he didn't come all this way just to drop dead before his mission is completed. Sighing, Talbot gives in and asks just what that mission is, and for clarification as to how he was able to travel back in time.

Alt-Jonas turns away and says that they had no choice, not with all that happened... then takes a breath and starts from the beginning...

Mere weeks after the current day, the Der'kal will launch a massive, renewed assault on Ankgor, the Jaffa world that is stalling their incursion into the Milky Way ("Rogues, Part 1"). So long as it remains in Alliance hands, the aliens cannot advance any farther, and Alt-Jonas says that the attack will be large enough to overrun any resistance, and that there's essentially nothing Earth can do to save the planet. This horrifies Jackson and Carter, who at once say that they're not going to simply let millions upon millions of their allies be slaughtered, but Alt-Jonas waves them off. He claims that if SG-1 tries to intervene, they will die, it's that simple. In fact, that's partly how his galaxy became so distraught and hopeless; they just had to try and resist.

                              Start Flashback

Not content to sit back and let the Jaffa be killed, Colonel Mitchell asked for temporary command of the Aurora and five other DSC-304s. Yielding to pressure from General O'Neill, Dr. Talbot, and the Jaffa Nation, the UN and Pentagon allowed him to head to Ankgor, and he arrived minutes ahead of the expected enemy armada, quickly placing himself under the command of Admiral Kitel. The Alliance force was soon joined by extra ships from the Tok'ra, and for a brief time it looked as though they could actually repel the siege.

But when a fleet of almost 100 Der'kal warships, ranging from gunboats to corvettes to frigates, all appeared just out of weapons' range, the hearts of the defenders sank instantly. The battle lasted for a full two days, with tens of thousands of Jaffa sacrificing themselves to give a few more civilians the chance to flee through the Ankgor stargate. But finally, the crushing blow came; a Der'kal supership joined the fight, and maneuvered its way towards Kitel's flagship, the Hak'tyl. In an incredible test of wills, Kitel went head-to-head with the alien battlecruiser, but it was a useless gesture. The Hak'tyl's shields failed, its hull split, and an explosion bright enough to scramble nearby visual sensors destroyed the entire ship. After that, the Alliance ships quickly faltered, and one by one the remaining defenses were destroyed, until Mitchell and the Aurora were all that remained. With his shields failing, the Lt. Col. ordered his helmsman to beam the crew to Ankgor's stargate platform, then took over navigation controls and flew into the heart of the enemy formation. Firing every last weapon he had, he rammed the Der'kal supership, hoping to destroy the alien weapon with his last breath...

...but he failed. The supership's shields held, and the Aurora exploded harmlessly against the energy barrier. With their victory in space secured, the Der'kal opened up bombardment on Ankgor itself, decimating civilian sectors and slaughtering almost one-hundred million Jaffa. A mere two days after the final surrender of Jaffa forces there, the Der'kal launched simultaneous attacks on two dozen nearby human worlds, conquering them all with ease. The invasion had begun anew.

                              End Flashback

In the ISGC's infirmary, the SG-1 team listens in stunned silence as the heroic story of Col. Mitchell's sacrifice is told. Cameron himself doesn't seem to believe that he actually died, and tears come to his eyes unbidden. Whispering, Daniel asks how many Jaffa finally died on Ankgor, and Alt-Jonas coldly informs him that almost a billion innocents were slaughtered when the indiginous people refused to cooperate. This is too much for Vala, who turns away and leans on Mitchell's shoulder, trying to hold back the sorrow they all surely feel.

Alt-Jonas asks if they understand why the future cannot be allowed to unfold like that. With Ankgor under alien control, the fate of the Alliance was sealed. And, a few months later, that proved all too-true...

(More of "The Time Traveler," see previous psot for start and next for the end.)
                                Spoiler:
                                Start Flashback

Colonel Samantha Carter is desperately trying to convince Vala Mal Doran not to leave as the former-smuggler stands before the stargate in the ISGC. She says that they need her here, on SG-1, to help resist the invasion, but Vala claims she's had enough. Earth is incapable of doing anything now that the United Nations has placed the ISGC under its direct control. She shouts that removing Dr. Talbot from command was bad enough, but handing things over to the former IOA council is even worse. Under conditions like this, she simply can't stay on SG-1 any longer. Then, after giving Sam an affectionate hug and telling her to give her love to Daniel and the others, she walks up the ramp and disappears through the stargate.

((Alt-Jonas explains that this was the last time they saw Vala for about a year.))

Now two members short, Daniel Jackson contacts Jonas on Langara and asks if he would like to join SG-1 again. Quinn says he'd like nothing better, and says that as soon as he can pull himself away from his work on Langara, he'll be at the ISGC. And, as he promised, he soon arrives and joins the team. But their first mission together, a recon assignment on a Der'kal occupied Jaffa planet, goes badly; the stargate is buried hours after their arrival, and a disloyal Jaffa reports their presence to the alien invaders. With no other options for escape, Carter comes up with a daring plan to break into an impound facility where the Der'kal are keeping the planets' Goa'uld ships. At first, things go well, with SG-1 penetrating all the way to the hanger with minimal problems, but then the enemy's true plan is revealed.

As soon as SG-1 is inside the hanger, Der'kal swarm in from other entrances, dozens upon dozens of them. Carter tries to lead her people into the nearest ship (a tel'tak), but is pinned down by enemy fire. Jonas and Daniel hurriedly try to come up with some way to get her away from the enemy, but there doesn't seem to be any options left. Seeing no other way, Daniel tells Jonas to take of Sam, then rushes forward toward Carter, pulling out a grenade. As soon as he gets close enough, he hurls the grenade at the alien warriors and grabs ahold of his oldest friend, tossing her into Jonas' waiting arms. Then, as his teammates look on with horrified eyes, Daniel stumbles to the ground, his own momentum bringing him crashing to the floor. Sam tries to break free of Jonas and get to him, but Quinn has the sense to restrain her. Hard as it is, he pries open the tel'tak's access door and jumps inside, pulling Carter with him.

The activates the ship and raises it off the hanger deck, preparing to ram the walls and escape. But just before he hits the engines, he looks through the window just in time to see Daniel trying to struggle to his feet as Der'kal advance on him. The largest warrior pulls the doctor to his feet and calmly places his rifle under Jackson's chin. And then, coldly, impossibly, he fires up into his skull, sending blood and bone matter flying in every direction. Sickened to the core, Jonas guns the engines, trying to see through tears welling in his eyes, crashes through the thin walls, and cloaks his ship for the run into orbit. Just one more dead friend, one more lost cause.

                                End Flashback

Alt-Jonas explains that shortly after that, the Der'kal attacked Dakara. With their brilliant military commander dead, the Jaffa were unable to mount an effective defense of their most-cherished world, and after an increasingly-bloody week-long battle, the aliens claimed victory. Teal'c tried twice to recapture the planet, but it was useless; the Der'kal were too many, and the Jaffa were broken and tired.

As he looks up, Alt-Jonas notices that Sam keeps staring at Daniel, unable to believe that he would willingly trade his life for hers. One could almost feel the pain tearing at her, with the revelation that she failed, that she couldn't do it, and that her incompetence cost a friend his life. As if to console her, Alt-Jonas says that had Carter died that day, he would not be here to warn them about the mistakes SG-1 and the Alliance made. It was ultmately her idea to try and send someone back in time to correct those mistakes, though in the end she wouldn't be able to do it herself.

((It is at this time that Alt-Jonas cries out in pain, and Dr. Lam is forced to shoo the group for some time as she examines him. But Alt-Jonas continues on through the examination, shouting to be heard.))

                                Start Flashback

With more than a fourth of the galaxy under alien control, Carter and Jonas realized that they needed some way to fix this. The search for Pandora's Box, the mythic weapon they believed could save them, was getting nowhere, and Earth's development of newer weapons and bigger guns was only slowing the enemy, not stopping them. The Der'kal were growing bolder, too, striking at targets such as the Nox homeworld and Chulak, despite their being far-removed from the frontlines.

Earth had become quite scared, especially after the fall of the last stronghold between it and the enemy (Dakara). The United Nations passed legislation that closed off the Sol System more and more, and built as many layers of defenses as possible to resist in the event of an attack. But the men and women of the ISGC, even strictly controlled by the UN, knew that isolation would not spare them in the end. Even the Aschen had realized that, but for different reasons. They began conquering nearby human and Jaffa worlds and absorbing them into the Confederation, claiming they were trying to protect others from the evil Der'kal. The Jaffa hung on the verge of collapse as almost half their fleet was lost in a disasterous attempt to defend a shipbuilding world, and Earth hinged in civil war over the galactic conflict. These were dark times, indeed.

But that was when Vala Mal Doran returned, bringing with her a beacon of hope; she had managed to rally dozens of worlds to the Alliance cause, and she was marshalling a fleet of mixed-species ships to aid the crumbling Alliance forces. These new ships, while primitive compared to Hak'tyl-class and Daedalus-class vessels, helped turn the tide in several battles, bolstering the depleted Jaffa fleet enough to allow some victories.

This, though, was not to last.

As the Der'kal drew closer to Earth, the Alliance engaged in a last-ditch effort to halt the alien advance. Almost one-hundred battleships were sent to a major Tok'ra outpost under attack to force the Der'kal's hand. Unfortunately, the enemy expected this, and had prepared a trap; they had developed interdiction technology, which allowed them to yank incoming vessles out of hyperspace and ambush them. They did exactly that as the Alliance armada was en route to the Tok'ra base, and in the seconds that their shields were down, the Der'kal annhiliated almost all of them. One of the few ships that escaped was Vala herself's, though the brave pirate would later die of wounds inflicted when her vessel's weaons-control console exploded on her. Her last words are now famous in the future; "Never surrender hope, for in the end it may be all we have left to us."

                                End Flashback

In the present, Dr. Lam has now shooed SG-1 from the infirmary entirely, and, standing in the hall, Carter notes that Alt-Jonas' voice is becoming distressingly strained, and he is clearly in a great deal of pain (as the view pans around the corridor, it's clear that Vala is not present, and neither is Dr. Talbot). Daniel says that he noticed that too, and it has been about eight hours since the man started talking. This must be a tremendous task for him, especially considering his wounds.

Upstairs in the briefing room, Dr. Talbot is trying to reassure the Langaran diplomats that everything at the base is under control and being taken care of. The lead ambassador from the Andari Federation, though, sees no reason for Jonas Quinn's extended absense, and demands he return here immediately so that these negotiations (primarily concerning the naquadriah trade to Earth) may commence. Knowing that Jonas, of all people, has the right to hear his alternate self speak, Talbot tries to play the tricky game of bogging the diplomats down in busywork, asking Walter to send up files that must be signed and wavers that must be dealt with. At the same time, she manages to slip into her office and calls Dr. Lam, asking her how much time she thinks Alt-Jonas has left... and the answer isn't good. Given his current condition, Caroline's cutting back the time she thinks he has from a day to only an hour or so more, even worse if he cotninues to talk and aggrevate his wounds.

In the infirmary itself, Lam is pulled away from the phone when Alt-Jonas hurls a tray at a nurse attempting to administer a sedative. He roars that he had to watch everyone he loved and knew die just so he could get here and tell SG-1 what they need to prevent the galaxy from falling to the Der'kal, and he won't have any pea-brained ISGC employee stopping him. Caroline assures him that they have no intention of stopping him, then wearily tells the team (now with Vala back from the bathroom) they can come in again.

Picking up where he left off, Alt-Jonas says that he and Carter worked on their time travel idea for another two years, and finally they had a breakthrough...
