The revised edition of "Cold War" will be out tomorrow afternoon, but I have a major Season 14 announcement!

This is the season I've really been looking forward to, because I plan on doing some... well, different things. And now for another "different" thing; the Season 14 finale, tentatively titled "Star By Star" (which is a clue, for the record), will be a feature-length movie that, if real, would probably be shown in theaters. That means it will run for roughly 2-2.5 hours and will have an extra-helping of special effects and other goodies.

I can't say much, but I can say that you've definitely never seen anything quite like what I'm thinking of before. Not on SG-1, not on Atlantis, and not in any fanfic I've ever read. The one thing I think I can give you is that this will change everything... forever.

                      13x16 "Cold War"
Synopsis: When SG-1 walks into a Der'kal trap, they are taken captive aboard the aliens' newly arrived supership... and play witness to an internal revolt in their ranks.
                      Spoiler:
A massive explosion rips a grove of trees apart on an alien world as Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell dives under a nearby rock outcropping for cover. Five SG teams have found themselves engaged with a larger-than-normal host of Der'kal warriors, and have been cut off from the stargate and all hope of rescue. Dodging enemy fire, Col. Samantha Carter joins her teammate and asks how things are going for SG-18 on the opposite side of the battlefield. Mitchell replies coldly that they just lost a man, and that a second is critically wounded. They need to evac now, even if it means letting this world and its people fall to the enemy.

A few meters away, Daniel and Vala trade P90 rounds for plasma fire as they attempt to force the retreat of a fairly large group of aliens. As they attempt to drive them back, Vala spots a glinting orb flying towards her position and suddenly remembers the plasma grenades the Der'kal used on Hebridan ("Behind Enemy Lines"), and pulls Jackson out of the way seconds ahead of a massive fireball. Collapsed in a pile of dirt, the former-smuggler wryly suggests a withdrawl, as it's clear the Earth forces have no hope of defeating a group of enemies this large.

But Sam's not quite ready to give up yet, and she calls for the remaining fighters to form up on SG-1's position and hold out as long as possible. As the other humans make their way toward Carter, Mitchell collects his teammates' grenades and ropes them together with his belt. He pulls the pins of a few near the top of the bundle and hurls them at the largest concentration of alien warriors, who realize a split second too late what is coming at them. A moment later, a dozen Der'kal are blown apart by the force of the grenades exploding, and the weary SG teams give a cheer of success.

The group of human fighters concentrate their fire one on foe after another, but thick armor and good cover prevent any more significant gains. And then the final crushing blow comes in the form of an enemy gunship trio, which swoops low over the battlefield and targets the now-massed group of Earth soldiers. Mitchell, noticing just in time, shouts for the gorup to scatter, but only SG-1 is able to scramble far enough away before a barrage of plasma falls from above, taking out the fifteen other survivors. As the gunships circle around and target the team, Sam finally throws down her weapon and orders the others to do the same.

                      It's over.

Light-years away, on Chulak, Teal'c stands before a massive hologram of the Milky Way galaxy. Around him are other prominent members of the Jaffa Senate, including Kal'el and Bra'tac (resting in a chair nearby). From the very way he stands and walks, it is clear that Teal'c is finally settling into his role as leader of his people, even though he would vastly prefer to be fighting on the frontlines with his friends. As a few more delegates arrive to listen, Teal'c begins outlining the progress of the Jaffa war effort. He first points out the amazing efforts of warriors across the galaxy in the face of the Der'kal invasion, and brings up the defense of Ankgor specifically as proof of their ability to wage a battle like this.

However, Teal'c also raises the issue of the internal political factions of the Nation, and criticizes some of the Senators for being so closed-minded in this time of war. The Alliance, he says, is only as strong as the people that make it up, and if the Jaffa are not prepared to do their part... all Jaffa... then they may end up with alien overlords controlling everything they know and love. Still, he makes sure to mention those outstanding individuals that continue to protect this great society, and motions outside for someone to enter.

After a moment, Admiral Kitel (the young commander first seen in "Rogues, Part 2") enters the chamber, looking grimly at the hologram hovering in the air above. It clearly outlines about 1/6 of the galaxy in the hands of the enemy, with several sectors along the contested borders flashing to indicate current action. Teal'c puts a hand on the man's shoulder and tells the assembled politicians that this is the bright hope for the Jaffa Nation, this young warrior who's skill at command and strategy seems to rival the greatest Jaffa of legend. It's obvious that Kitel is highly honored amongst his people.

Before Teal'c can add anything else, a messenger rushes in and approaches him, head bowed in apology. He whispers something urgent in Teal'c's ear, and the aging-warrior's face grows cold and unbelieving. As soon as the messenger is done, Teal'c turns to the crowd and quietly says that he must leave, and then rushes from the room. Off to the side, Bra'tac looks at Kal'el questioningly, but the younger Jaffa is just as clueless as to what's going on.

High in orbit above an alien world (presumably the same one SG-1 was fighting on), numerous Der'kal cruisers lay waste to the surface via bombardment, loosing dozens of plasma blasts at small cities across the globe. Massive wildfires can be seen even from this height, and the agony of the people below is almost palpable. And then two of the nearby cruisers shift, and an incredible sight is revealed; the Der'kal supership, a gargantuan vessel appearing to be larger than even a Wraith hive. Instead of organic matter, though, this craft is made of sleek, smooth metal and surrounded by thousands of fighters, most of which are making their way to the planet for attack runs.

Deep inside the belly of this starcruiser, SG-1 waits in a cell very similar to the one Daniel and Vala were held in on Hebridan ("Friendly Fire"); it consists of three metallic walls and an energy barrier used as a doorway. They have been stripped of all their weaponry and offworld gear, so they are just making small talk as they await their inevitable torture and interrogation. Since they have little else to do, Sam asks Vala and Jackson to recap what they know of the aliens' policy on prisoners. They explain that they don't actually know much except for the fact that they're willing to keep you locked up for decades if need be.

Through a window looking out into space, Mitchell comments dryly that it looks like the area around the stargate was just hit, and the team gathers around to watch as their former battlefield is annhiliated in a blast of fire. Apparently the Der'kal aren't interested in occupying this planet, and their alternate mode of dealing with conquered worlds is to devastate them so that no one else can claim them. It's a sad sight, to see a once lush and inhabited place be reduced to slag so quickly.

A clank at the end of the hallway makes the team jump, and they all back away from the window. The looks on their faces make it clear that they're all expecting the worst possible outcome, but, strangely, a look of mild surprise comes over Daniel and Vala's faces when their visitor comes face-to-face; it's none-other than Vur'naa, the Der'kal warrior who always seems to be present when SG-1 is involved in something. He tortured Teal'c for information when the Jaffa was captured ("Inroads, Part 1"), and later knocked out two more SG-1 members on Hebridan ("Behind Enemy Lines"). The soldier shakes his head at the team as he stands before them, two guards flanking him. He asks why they continue to persist in this resistance of theirs, saying that their pathetic technology make any real victory impossible.

Unable to shut up, as usual, Mitchell allows himself a moment of pride by pointing out that it was Alliance forces that won the Battle of Ankgor and stalled the Der'kal advance. Vur'naa brushes the remark off, saying that it doesn't matter in the long run considering they have renewed their offensive. He says that his leaders estimate that half the galaxy will be under their control by the year's end, with even more coming as the back half of their armada arrives. Standing herself now, Carter demands to know what the point of all this is. Why are the Der'kal even bothering to invade the Milky Way? At that, Vur'naa stiffens and turns away, muttering something to his guards in his own language. They take up positions outside SG-1's cell and watch as their commander walks off, leaving Carter and the others wondering just what that means.

Teal'c, meanwhile, has arrived in the very center of Chulak's newly-arisen citycenter, which has exploded with population following the war with the Ori ("Nightmares"). The stargate has been moved inside a small Greek-inspired temple-like structure, with over a dozen Jaffa warriors in ceremonial armor spaced around it, ready to defend the Jaffa capital. Six staff cannons have been mounted on a balcony above, also prepared to wipe out an invading force. Behind the cannons, in a small chamber, a control room has been set up for gate-based communications, and myriad Goa'uld terminals are spread about the room. Teal'c stands before the largest, looking through the doorway to the active stargate below, then turns to a monitor currently showing the face of Dr. Danielle Talbot.

He asks the ISGC commander if reports of SG-1's death are true, to which Talbot sadly replies it's looking that way more and more. The planet the team was on can't be dialed, and a Tok'ra scout ship dispatched to investigate from a nearby planet hasn't returned. It looks like the Der'kal attacked, even though all intelligence from the Nox indicated their offensive was still stalled. Obviously, that's no longer the case. And to make matters worse, a sudden political squabble between China and the United States as the UN fleet stuck in Earth orbit, unable to go anywhere or do anything. For the time being, at least, SG-1 is on their own.

(Continued in the next post. Too long.)

(See previous post for begining of "Cold War" and the next post for the conclusion.)
                        Spoiler:
After Teal'c cuts the connection, he notices Kitel standing in the doorway, his face concerned and somber. The young Admiral explains that Kal'el noticed he was distressed and he had to see why a leader as great as Teal'c would be hurt so. The former SG-1 member explains what has happened to his friends and the problems on Earth preventing their safe return home. Quiet for a moment, Kitel asks if the ISGC have the exact coordinates of the planet in question, and when Teal'c replies they do, he asks for them to be transferred to his quarters at once. Smiling at the elder Jaffa, he says he has a plan...

On the alien supership, Vur'naa is walking down a long corridor filled with others of his kind. At length, he comes before a chamber with a grand-looking doorway, and the guards before it nod for him to enter. The Der'kal warrior walks inside and drops to the floor, his clawed hands on his shoulders, and says something that sounds almost musical in his language. Standing before a large altar is a Der'kal unlike any previously seen, this one having fin-like apendages protruding from its head and short spikes trailing down its arms and legs. This is a te'kal the alien word meaning, roughly, Seer. The Der'kal society, these beings are reverred and honored, as they serve at the right-hand of the Exarch, the supreme leader.

This te'kal growls for Vur'naa to rise, saying that something has come to his attention. The superships (called "rashnii kai" in the native tongue) hold primarily workers and soldiers, and as such there can be some discontent with the ruling classes. Of late, one particular sect of warriors have begun to question the validity of the invasion, citing the dozens of identical ones the Der'kal have launched against other galaxies over the millennia. They claim that their ability to win has diminished greatly, and that they barely came out of the "Unkao" Galaxy alive. The te'kal orders Vur'naa to wipe out this heretical gorup at once, and reveals that this command comes directly from the Exarch himself; if Vur'naa succeeds here, great things could await him in the future.

The warrior, still on the ground, accepts this responsibility, and declares that he will have this revolt against the Exarch neutralized by the time the fleet has finished decimating the planet they're orbiting. With a wave of his hand, the te'kal dismisses Vur'naa, turning back to a strange Der'kal device that he's manipulating.

Several decks away, SG-1 is still cooling their collective heels in lockup. Now that there are guards outside, the team is forced to whisper any conversations, but they continue to try and figure a way out of this mess. Carter says that she's noticed these ships are designed very much like standard Earth ones, with different areas divided by their importance. She guesses that the bridge will be somewhere at the head of the ship, but to escape they'll need to find a hanger of some kind. But Mitchell adds that they don't know how to even fly Der'kal ships, though, so getting to the nearest hanger may just leave them stranded in a new location with enemies on the hunt. He suggests they try to get to a communications terminal, hack into the subspace transmitters, and broadcast a wide-spectrum distress call to all Alliance ships. Jackson and Vala are neutral on the subject, listening intently as a plan is hammered out.

On Chulak, Admiral Kitel has called together a large group of his most trusted First Primes (the Jaffa Nation equivalent of Commander or General, depending on the situation) to discuss an extraction plan he has in mind to rescue SG-1. Although some of the men mutter that saving human lives is unimportant, Kitel reminds them all that the Tau'ri (and this team in particular) have been instrumental in the defeat of every major enemy that has threatened the galaxy, and they at least owe them this much. Now that he has control of the meeting, Kitel proceeds to call up a map of the galaxy, quickly zooming in on the sector of the planet SG-1 was on (now revealed to be called "Pelos"). He hardly notices when Teal'c and Bra'tac enter, sitting at the back, and continues on undisturbed.

Kitel explains a daring plan that will utilize the Jaffa Nation's Sixth Fleet, which is currently stationed over Dar Eshkalon (the new economic hub of the Nation). With luck, the forces won't be missed as he leads them around Der'kal-held space to Pelos, where he will trap the enemy in a pincer strike. The Admiral hopes to use the ha'tak's superior maneuverability and speed to make up for Der'kal cruisers' strength and size, but either way he believes they can win. He mentions that Earth has agreed to lend him a sophisticated Asgard sensor suite that should allow him to detect the life signs of the SG-1 team, and therefore prioritize targets so they can extract them as quickly and bloodlessly as possible. With any luck, they will both save the group and deal a major blow to their enemies in one fell swoop.

About an hour later, the First Primes file out, all looking pleased with the plan their younger counterpart has devised. After the majority have left, Teal'c stands and congratulates Kitel on something he himself has never managed to do; make the various Primes shut up long enough to listen. The humble Jaffa bows his head and gives his thanks for the compliment, and asks if Teal'c agrees with his plan. He, of course, does, and says that he contacted the Sixth Fleet as soon as Kitel said it was needed and informed its commander that it was being diverted. Everything is already prepared, and the needed Asgard sensory system will be arriving momentarily.

Then Bra'tac approaches Kitel and grasps the young man's arm, muttering how glad he is that the Admiral is on the Jaffa's side of this war, for, in his opinion, if his aliegences were reversed... things would go very, very badly.

Dr. Talbot, meanwhile, is overseeing the transfer of the Asgard computer terminal from one of the ISGC's laboratory's to Chulak. The stargate is active and a team of two dozen technicians and soldiers are slowly moving the delicate piece of equiptment toward the ramp. But the doctor is pulled away for a moment when Walter informs her that they're recieving a subspace transmission from the Tok'ra; the scout ship dispatched to Pelos just limped back into Alliance space, reporting almost a dozen Der'kal cruisers and support ships in orbit around the planet, as well as something so large it blocked out the nearby stars. As she slowly realizes what this means, Talbot breathlessly shouts for a link to be established through the gate. Teal'c and the Jaffa need to know what's waiting on the other end of this trip.

Over Pelos itself, the Der'kal fleet seems to be finishing its bombardment. There is scarcely any part of the once-pristine planet that remains green, and most of the surface is chared and blackened. Inside the supership, Vur'naa is in his quarters (which appear quite small and cramped) at a comm. terminal, apparently speaking with a contact of his inside the heretic organization. Most of their leaders meet every few days on the engineering deck, where the warriors and officials never go. In fact, their next meeting should be within the hour, and if Vur'naa hurries, he may be able to squash them once and for all. Seeing there's no time to waste, the alein commander grabs his pistol and belt (which has various items on it) and rushes from the room, calling on a radio-like device for a squad of elite warriors to meet him down below.

On the engineering deck, seven Der'kal in cloaked robes converge on a single doorway, all whispering in their native tongue. One of them, Si'inaa, believes their operation has been compromised, as a new convert to their guild mysteriously canished after attending only one meeting of their people. He quickly tells the others that this ship may no longer be safe, and moving their order to one of the conquered infidel worlds may suit them better. Another agrees, citing Telin ("Routed") as a possibility, given its out-of-the-way location and uselessness in the overall invasion plan.

The group slowly starts to move away, hoping to avoid detection in the throng of workers ahead, but Si'inaa freezes as he sees two warriors round the corner ahead and begin roughly grabbing passing aliens. He hisses for his people to change paths, but every hallway and exit is filled with soldiers ripping off hoods and shaking down beings. Slowly but surely, they are being hemmed in.

Seeing they have no choice now, Si'inaa shouts for his men to "take up arms and resist!" and the seven Der'kal suddenly reveal wicked-looking knives and plasma carbines. Many of the workers likewise hear the call and turn on the warriors, resulting in a full-out brawl. Green plasma fire lances across the chamber as the fightfight drags on, and Vur'naa uses the chaos to slip through the crowd towards the heretic leaders. He draws his pistol and shoots one in the head, but his second shot slams into an armored breastplate, and he is forced to fall back.

In their cell, SG-1 listens as sounds of weaponsfire ring through the ventalation ducts, and the two soldiers standing guard outside suddenly rush off as a PA announcement in Der'kal booms throughout the ship. Vala asks if perhaps help has arrived, but Daniel thinks it's more likely an internal problem considering no ships have shown up outside to signal a rescue attempt. Either way, Mitchell tells his teammates that their chance for escape may soon be upon them, and to get ready to go at a moment's notice.

In hyperspace, Admiral Kitel stands on the bridge of the newly constructed Hak'tyl-class mothership Gerak, named in honor of the Jaffa-turned-Prior that saved Earth from an Ori plague ("The Fourth Horeseman, Part 2"). He and the Jaffa Sixth Fleet are nearing Pelos, and the Nox have already confirmed that the enemy ships scouted out by the Tok'ra are still in position. Also on the bridge is Rak'nor, the longtime friend of Teal'c who helped lead the resistance movement against the Goa'uld. He has been given command of the ship, but is now taking a backseat as the Admiral leads the mission. The two quietly converse for a moment, reflecting on how this war has so changed the Jaffa from a divided people suspicious of one another to no end to a race secure and (mostly) unified. It is a great day.

Back on the Der'kal supership, the scuffle on the engineering deck continues. The elite alien warriors have begun to take the upper hand, though, mulling down the workers by the dozens. Only four of the heretic movement's leaders still stand, and one of them is on his knees, his left leg missing. Si'inaa, the presumed head of the organization, has entered into personal combat with Vur'naa, and the two are exchanging kicks and thrusts with ferocious speed. But finally, Vur'naa manages to sink his knife into his adversary's neck. As his life slips away, Si'inaa manages to draw the other Der'kal close and whisper a single seed of doubt; five days into the invasion, the vanguard fleet discovered a world containing a column with inscriptions in their language... a prophecy of their defeat at the hands of the Alliance.

Before Vur'naa can do or say anything else, though, another announcement comes over the PA system: infidel vessels are exiting hyperspace and opening fire! And indeed, over two dozen ha'tak (including the Gerak) are leaving a hyperspace window and launching death gliders and al'kesh, loosing a barrage of plasma at the Der'kal forces. One of the enemy cruisers is overwhelmed by concentrated fire and blown apart, but the aliens quickly get into formation and move to defend their supership.

(See two posts up for the start of "Cold War." This is the conclusion.)
                          Spoiler:
On the bridge of the Gerak, Kitel activates the Asgard sensor system and begins scanning for SG-1. Within seconds he has their location on the supership pinpointed, and he orders his men to target the engines of nearby cruisers. At the same time, he shouts for Rak'nor to signal the "others" and have them engage. As soon as he does so, a hyperspace window on the opposite side of the fray opens and a dozen more ha'tak appear, converging on the enemy ships. They're trapped.

Meanwhile, SG-1 is watching the battle from inside their cell, wondering what in the world is going on outside. The lights flicker occasionally as the supership begins to take shield damage, but, unfortunately, the energy field keeping the cell secure does not fail.

Now Kitel's plan begins to come together. All of his ships fire at the cruisers near the enemy flagship, and two of them explode at once, causing massive fireballs to slam into its shields. He orders this tactic repeated on other cruisers, hoping he can overwhelm the supership's shields and extract SG-1. But either way, he has a plan he thinks will work, and tells Rak'nor to give the go-ahead to the "Deep Striker."

A small, sleek-looking modified al'kesh leaves the main hanger and moves toward the supership. And then, amazingly, it opens a hyperspace window and vanishes. A moment later, another window opens and it emerges... inside the enemy's shields! Kitel copied the tactic then-Colonel Jack O'Neill once used to destroy Anubis' superweapon ("Fallen"), applying it to the Der'kal. He didn't know if the alien-based force fields would oscelate as Goa'uld ones do, but this proves it. Better yet, this al'kesh was given a slight upgrade from Earth... it has beaming technology onboard, and now that SG-1's life signs have been pinpointed, there's no need for locator beacons. The team is transported directly onto the al'kesh, which then opens another window and escapes before it can be targeted.

With several enemy cruisers destroyed or disabled, Admiral Kitel decides they've done enough. He orders his ships to return to Dar Eshkalon at once, and the Sixth Fleet retreats to the safety of Alliance-held space, leaving Pelos and the humiliated Der'kal force far behind. Watching from a viewport, Vur'naa shakes his head in amazement. Just what have his people gotten themselves into? And even worse... is there a chance the prophecy could be right?

Back on Chulak, Admiral Kitel and SG-1 ring down to the planet's surface, with Rak'nor following soon after. Teal'c embraces his friends, glad to see they are alright, and wisely tells them to try and avoid such situations in the future. Carter smiles, admitting that they may have failed in their mission to warn the Pelosians, but at least the Jaffa were able to inflict a serious blow to the Der'kal. Now that they've proven they can win a skirmish without exceedingly overwhelming force (as was the case at Ankgor), maybe the aliens will think twice about trying to take the major galactic worlds.

Daniel dials up the ISGC and sends his IDC, saying good-bye to the assembled Jaffa (now including Bra'tac and Kal'el). As the team leaves, one-by-one, Carter pauses and thanks Kitel for coming after them. The young Admiral nods his head in welcome, and says that if there's any group in the galaxy he'd risk a million lives for, it's theres'. Knowing that their Alliance has just grown even stronger, Sam smiles and heads through the gate for home.

I absolutely loved this episode, pure awesome. It has also very much piqued my interest into the Der'kals past (conquering many other galaxies? what were they doing 10 000 years ago between Milky and Pegasus?), and also that prophecy (who wrote it? when? WHYYYYYY?!).

                            Can. Not. Wait.

P.S.: Though I like the Alliance winning, there is more to them than the Jaffa and their cool commander, because after all Earth ships are still the ultimate ****. Also, it's been quite some time now since the Deadalus iteration over the Prometheus design, and since then we have gotten the Asgard datacore and tons more knowledge about Ancient technology (from Atlantis and perhaps the Ori). Isn't it time yet for something geared towards beating the Der'kal so bad they wished we didn't cut them so bad?

I think the title is nice and appropriate. After all, following "Star By Star," you may not be seeing a prominent character ever again...

Oh, the spoilers I can leak on this one are just so much fun

Interesting, isn't it? I wanted an episode where SG-1 would take a backseat to other issues that needed to be resolved, and in this case those issues were the Jaffa and the history of the Der'kal.

Also, the alien heretic movement isn't dead quite yet. It lost its leaders, yes, but there remain large groups of Der'kal that do not agree with this invasion in the least.

Wait for "Conflict of Interest" in early Season 14 and you'll see why Earth isn't all that keen on producing a new battlecruiser anytime soon.

Did I say it would be Earth? I suggest you go back a page or two and take a look at the map I posted of the current Milky Way. There's one very important planet lying right in the warzone; a planet that's only going to become more of a focal point as time goes by.

By the way, a preview of "Blue Zone" (yes, I stole the title from the Avalon episode of the same name) will be out shortly.
