                                15x12 "Against the Night"
Synopsis: Earth's liberation from alien conquest is a short-lived respite from war, as hostilities flare up almost immediately between refugee and resistance governments. Meanwhile, the old SG-1 team tries to rebuild their lives and secure humanity a place in the Alliance once more.
                                Spoiler:
(45 second recap of "Interludes" and "Quid Pro Quo," followed by the following in subtitles as the scene opens: One week later)

Driving in a small jeep up a sloped forest road, Dr. Daniel Jackson, Dr. Danielle Talbot, and Vala Mal Doran sit in relative silence. Their driver is clearly what would have once been a United States Air Force officer, as are the two other passengers in the rear. Behind them, a convoy of other jeeps and dinged DUVs form a line stretching far back down the road, forming a clear prosession of some sort. Sipping a mug of coffee, Jackson stares blankly into the woods outside, and Vala and Talbot both glance at one another apprehensively.

After a few moments of driving, the jeeps begin coming to a stop, and the driver of the lead vehicle exits with his fellow officers. Daniel continues staring out into the foliage, absently letting his mug slip more and more, until Vala finally holds his hand and puts the drink down, snapping him out of his reverie. Together, the two of them join their former commander and step out onto the leaf-strewn ground... and stare up at the remnants of Cheyenne Mountain, where the International Stargate Command was based until two years ago, when the entire complex was crushed by orbital bombardment. Of course, for Daniel and Danielle, this place hardly shocks them; they got a firsthand look at the ruined mountain when they gated back onto Earth from the Beta Site on a recon and intelligence-gathering mission a few months before ("Earthfall"). But still, seeing the place that once represented human might to the galaxy lying in rubble is sobering nonetheless.

Stepping over some of the larger rocks, Talbot makes her way to where the entrance to the facility once stood, shakes her head, and turns back toward the jeeps. Passing by Daniel and Vala, she says that it's time to get down to the real business at hand; rebuilding all of this into something grander than ever before. Leaving the numerous military personnel to appraise the mess that was once the ISGC, they head for the nearest transport.

On the other side of the continent, Cameron Mitchell and Rebbecca Eaton, returning home from Dar Eshkalon as heroes ("Quid Pro Quo"), are being likewise dropped off at a once-impressive but now-devastated locale; the former headquarters of the United Nations on the riverfront of Manhattan. The two arrived via Free Jaffa transport ship two days ago, as the Earth stargate is still buried underneath what used to be the ISGC, and were immediately swallowed up by the small army of refugee military units landing in New York City. Travel has been nearly nonstop since the conflict in orbit ended in a Der'kal retreat, and Colonel Taylor began ferrying much-needed people from the Beta Site back home immediately.

Unfortunately, most of the displaced humans will have to stay where they are for now. The alien fleet may have withdrawn, but the enemy still have a significant ground force, and much of the planet continues to be in Der'kal hands, Africa and southeast Asia most of all. FPE raiding missions have begun to knock out some of their strongholds, but it's going to take weeks, if not months, to fully wipe out the remaining occupational forces on Earth, despite the resistance's best efforts to map out every last one's location to ease the process. It would be much easier if they could simply have the human vessels in orbit use pinpoint bombardment to destroy them, but the ships are tied up on guard duty; the Der'kal have attacked almost every six hours like clockwork since they were forced to abandon their prize conquest, with each incursion stronger than the last. They don't intend to give up without a fight, that much is clear.

As Cameron and Rebbecca step out of their vehicle and enter the United Nations complex itself, Mitchell flips through a clipboard handed to him by a senior refugee official when they disembarked, absently rattling off what's written there. Apparently, while the past week has been an enormous success for the Tau'ri, it's been marked by horrible defeats for the Alliance, and two major Tok'ra outposts, Coruna and Ni'sar, fell to the alien armada. Most-striking, though was the location of these outposts; they're important border worlds on the frontline, but not in the usual location—instead of being in the souther portion of the galaxy, where most of the battles in the past year have been waged, these planets are located north of the core. And that can only mean one thing, given the only significant world in that region; the Der'kal's latest offensive is not aimed at pacifying more of the Free Jaffa Nation, but quite possibly sacking the Alliance capital at Heliopolis. But Earth has little resources or concern for that right now, as even if they wanted to help out in any real galactic military action, they simply don't have the manpower.

Turning into the ruined General Assembly hall, the two find themselves looking out at the People's Assembly, the Free People of Earth's provisional body, all seated on the right side of the chamber. On the other side sit a much-rougher looking crowd, mostly soldiers and people who must have been in high military positions prior to the Fall of Earth ("Star By Star"). This is the resistance's own government, which, while roughly equal in size to that of the FPE delegation, represents considerably more of the planet's population; an estimated twenty million to the scant 10,000 refugees at the Beta Site. Standing at the speaker's podium, Colonel Makepeace, now de facto leader of the resistance government ("Earthfall") is giving a speech on how glad he is to finally be able to put down his rifle and embrace another human being in friendship now that the refugees have returned. Taking a seat in the back and listening in, Eaton remarks that she got to know Makepeace quite well during her tenure on the resistance, and she doesn't think he's being sincere at all. In fact, she suspects that he's already putting safeguards in place to assure that it is his administration, not the FPE's that ultimately takes up the mantle vacated by the United Nations.

When the speech is finished, Makepeace steps down to applause from the resistance delegation and motions for Mitchell and Eaton to come join him. As soon as they approach, the disgraced Colonel claps his arm on both of their shoulders, and says how relieved he is to see them safe and sound, especially since he needs someone to head up the orbital defense of the planet ever since Samantha Carter vacated the position shortly after driving off the Der'kal occupation fleet. Holding up a hand, Eaton asks what the deal is here; he can hardly call all the shots now that the Beta Site's people are returning. They sacrificed a lot to win back Earth, and they deserve just as much a say in how the planet is run as anyone. But Makepeace doesn't want to hear it, and retorts that far more of his men and women were tortured and killed by the Der'kal to blow up their shipyards, sabotage their factories, and ever-loosen their hold on their homeworld. The refugees did them a great service by repelling the alien fleet, but he's confident that, in time, his people would have been able to do it, too. As far as he's concerned, this "Free People of Earth" is nothing, and nothing is what it will remain. Watching Makepeace turn back to his own people, Mitchell and Eaton exchange worried looks; this is not good in the least.

Across the city an hour or so later, Talbot, Daniel, and Vala are disembarking from a puddle jumper that just brought them from Colorado Springs. Waiting at the bottom of the ramp, right on schedule, are Mitchell and Eaton, both wearing concerned faces but trying to offer relieved smiles nonetheless. Having met that at JFK International Airport—the only remaining port in New York not completely destroyed—when they first got home from captivity, it isn't really a reunion, though Vala rushes up and embraces Cameron anyway, muttering that she doesn't care if losing friends is part of being in this group ("The Quest, Part 2"), and she's not losing him again. Blushing slightly, Mitchell moves on, saying that the situation back at the United Nations is getting worse, and he suspects that any attempt to establish an FPE administration to handle anything would be torn down by militiamen in the name of "freedom" almost at once.

Talbot sighs, explaining that she was worried about that even before they retook Earth. Either way, she hopes to outwit Makepeace in at least one field; since Vala has graciously loaned her the tel'tak she brought with her to the Beta Site, she plans to head to Heliopolis at once and make a formal case for humanity before the Alliance. With any luck, they'll step in and ensure that it is the civilian government of the Free People that is put into power, and not the military junta headed by Makepeace. Daniel and Vala themselves, meanwhile, will stay here and try to assist in whatever rebuilding operations they can, while Mitchell and Eaton will do as Makepeace asks (for now) and take over defensive command in orbit to help repel any more Der'kal raids. The group starts to break up, but before the others leave, Talbot turns and calls them back, glancing at Vala as she says that at least one thing is certain now, and this time around, they're all coming back from their respective missions. Nodding in agreement, the five of them hold for another moment, then fan out to attend to their duties.

With all the commotion taking place in the ruins in New York, at least one person is doing her best to avoid the fanfare. In Silver Creek Park, out in the Midwest United States, a middle-aged woman with still-vibrant blond hair steps weakly out of her car, hugging her jacket tightly in the cold air. Before her is a small wooden cabin footing a private pond in the middle of the woods, quiet and secluded from the rest of the world. The front door is open, and belongings can be seen strewn about inside, as if its owner was forced to grab what he could and leave in a hurry. The woman slowly walks around to the back of the cabin and out onto the small wooden pier overlooking the pond. Sinking down to her knees, Samantha Carter pulls off her wedding ring and cradles the delicate diamond in her hand, tears running down her face. Behind her, Jack O'Neill's cabin rests as always in the fading sunlight, a lonely audience of one to Carter's grief.
