    Hooray for realistic characters!

This isn't a bash at previous Torchwood, not at all, before anyone suggests that.

No no, I've always liked Torchwood's characterisation... (especially in CoE)

But I have to say, Esther is a wonderful character. And it's a crime that more people don't realise this. I see people complain about how she should have realised the consequences of her actions, how she's not tough enough, despite working for the CIA... etc etc. What people fail to realise is that, actually, she's one of the most realistic Intelligence organisation based characters I have ever seen on any TV show. She's an INT analyst for a start, not a field operative. Already we need to accept that she's not Jane Bond, but people have this thing where they assume that if you work for an INT/Military organisation you're an action hero by default. Newsflash, no - not unless you're part of a highly specialised unit (i.e SAS or such like). The majority of such people, the people that keep such organisations running, are normal people working in a normal looking office doing a routine, if top secret, job. Esther is perfect. So - yeah, bully for Torchwood not going down the all too obvious route of having all CIA-like characters being superhuman.

I'm with Fly Boy. I appreciate realistic characters. They make mistakes, act on their beliefs, and provoke responses.

I don't have to "like" a character. They are not my friends on Facebook. I have to have a response to their beliefs and actions. Rex, Vera, Esther, and Gwen all provoke compelling responses, and I'm finding myself enjoying Jack again for the first time in years.

TW Season 1-3 had good characters as well that all had varied and multiple flaws.

I don't deny that, hence why I said it wasn't a bash at previous TW, but I dunno, I like Esther.

Although generally not applicable to Torchwood, I have the same feeling about portrayal of hi-tech companies, aero firms etc. Most of the "boffins" are actually regular men and women who'd rather be talking about their kids, worrying about that leaking pipe in the kitchen or trying to get tickets to the latest gig/sports-match than wandering around in white coats with pocket protectors.

Agreed. Some of the characters whose roles in a storyline I respect most are the ones who I really don't like, but do what they do well. They stay true to their nature even if what's in their nature isn't something I could ever like -- and for that reason I respect them as characters. I get mad at them, and I want to punch walls when they let people die or kill the wrong people *cough*Jack in CoE*cough*, but I still respect them for staying true to whatever it is they actually believe in.

Mostly because the kind of people who would wander around in white coats with pocket protectors these days would only do it to look like those stereotypical science geniuses who are inventing the next best thing which will trump the internet. Not that I know anything about anything like that...
