I've been skimming through the discussions about Tesla & Helen, and I have to say - I'm so glad to see that I'm not the only one who has all this complicated stuff going on in their head about these two.
If you all don't mind, I'd like to share my thoughts about the two of them.
In all honesty, the stuff that happened in Rome, I believe that Tesla really felt betrayed by Helen and reacted very badly. He had probably, while working on his plot for world domination, had kept building up this fantasy about how she would love his plan, would think he was brilliant, etc etc and to see her shrink away from him, call him crazy, and aim her gun at him (more a gesture than thinking she would kill him), I believe it broke him. Earlier in the episode, he saved her life from that large stake the Cabal threw at him.
Later, when he came back on the show, he was always helping her, saving her, taking care of 'the children', and generally putting his butt on the line for her. I think Nikola has been in love with her, on some level, ever since Oxford. I believe back then with dating customs being what they were, him knowing she was an English lady and he was a kid from another country and of different social standing than her own (as I recall, Real Life Tesla grew up on a farm?), plus the fact that he had a thick accent - that may have been mocked by jealous classmates, he may have been slow in approching her, then John snapped her up, swept her off her feet, and left Nikola to wait for her heart to heal enough. But then John became a psycho killer, Helen had to run Sanctuary (and take care of Ashley, later on), Nikola had to go into hiding, and the world moved on without Nikola. Helen appears to have had a short relationship with Watson, we know she was engaged to John, and there may have been some other heart breaks (not all of them romantic, but still painful) over the decades - meanwhile Nikola was left to plan, wait, watch, and hope.
As for Helen, I think she may have truly been so, "I need to be the first woman through Oxford, break all the rules, and be Gregory Magnus's daughter" that she didn't notice Nikola's attention paid to her. She was swept off her feet by John - yet when she's in pain, afraid, and having her DNA changed by the Source Blood, she reaches for Nikola's hand to steady her and make her feel safe. Then John broke her heart, she had to protect the embryo that would be Ashley, she had to take care of Watson & Nigel, take care of the Sanctuary, fake Nikola's death for his own safety, etc. She was always so busy taking care of everyone around her that she got comfortable doing that, comfortable at keeping everyone at arm's length, and Nikola is that one person who gets under her skin, who remembers when she didn't have secrets and didn't have 'history', and who has never lost his faith in her no matter what has happened since Oxford.
Helen is so guarded and in charge - but Nikola makes her feel young and playful again. Nikola is always protective of his heart and a genious - Helen's the only person who challanges him and who makes him want to take a chance.
Okay, I'm done. Thank you for reading.
