You take Photoshop or GimP (the latter is freeware and my favorite anyway) and play around with them.
It will be easier for everybody to help you with specific questions that will probably come up once you've started

Promo pics from Syfy are often misleading. Remember there was not even 1 promo pic of 'Resistance' that has Nikola in it? Same for 'Chimera'.

Well, most people use photoshop, but I have to admit that even though I have GIMP, I have absolutely no clue how to use it, so I create mine on Microsoft Powerpoint and then save them as a JPG rather than a powerpoint file *hides*

Amazingly it came to me in a dream.... and BAM!
I tend to not use many effects in my vidding because:
1) im still learning. lol
2) effects on a vid is like dumping makeup on a naturally beautiful person
