Thanks! I only discovered Sanctuary last year but since the beginning, I've always thought that Helen and Nikola were so much more interesting than Helen and John.
I discovered Sanctuary this year I'd say that Helen and John's back story is far more interesting, but he is veeeery creepy - and he broke her heart Animus was the episode that made me into a Helen/Tesla shipper, the chemistry between them was off the scale and has been ever since (and probably even was before Animus, I just didn't see it until then...)

I do see the chemistry between Helen/John, but I just can't ship her with anyone but Tesla.
John was definitely a romantic in the past, I think he's lost a bit of that now with his madness & he is just way too sure of himself (I don't think John often found it hard to attract a woman & I think that would go to anyone's head). I do love his character, just not with Helen. Pre Ripper John maybe, but now he's done too much.
Nikola/Helen is a great match. They have chemistry, they connect intellectually. Unlike John who Helen has so much trouble controlling (not really the word I wanted, but can't think of the right one), Helen actually seems to ground Nikola, to get him to think about his more selfish actions & ultimately the majority of the time he ends up doing the right thing because his listens to her & her opinion matters to him. Also, for all his bravado about how sure he is of Helen's feelings for him, I think he is not as sure of this as he makes out & this is more of a reassurance for himself. Sometimes you catch some great expressions of vulnerability from him when he's around Helen. It took him over 100 years to work up the courage to admit his feelings to her after all.
I agree: there's still chemistry between Helen and John, but it's tainted by all the things he has done. I think he redeemed some of this by taking in the creature that caused his madness again in Haunted, but I don't think Helen will ever be able to trust him again.
I think Nikola really wants Helen to like him, but sometimes his ideas gets first priority because it's also important to him to be recognized as the genius he is. Too bad he doesn't always think things through and therefore needs Helen's help to stop disasters from happening
