Helen Magnus/Amanda Tapping Thunk, Discussion and Appreciation
This thread is for the appreciation of helen magnus, and the actress that plays her, amanda tapping, from the -soon to be seen- show 'santuary'.
starting off, i'm SUPER excited!! :D
amanda plays helen magnus, a victorian era doctor, who because of her line of work and who she's associated with, is 157 years old. helen has a daughter named ashley, who's father is none other than jack the ripper. :p
helen's father put together a santuary for abnormal ppl - wherewolves, vampires, creaters, politicians (oops) - and helen, with her daughter's and co-worker's help, have taken over the duty.
as a HUGE fan of amanda tappings, i'm soooooooo excited to see her play someone so different and complicated.
just think of all the possibilities to be shown with helen. she's 157 years old, having lived through some amazing times. she was engaged to jack the ripper and had a child with him. she deals with very strange and dangerous creatures. LOADS of exciting character bits ahead!! :D

Re: Helen/Amanda 'Santuary' appreciation thread
Hi Sally and thanks for starting this thread:)
I really do think Amanda is going to create another very UNFORGETABLE character with Helen. I love the whole idea of her having a child with Jack the ripper, the back story to that alone is going to be breathtaking and then you have all the rest of the story, wonderfull, wonderfull idea that i hope does really well through the internet and after that i hope it will be on TV at some point because it deserves to have every outlet it can!

it seems that every new thing i hear about helen is just mind boggling and awesome. she's 157 years old, was engaged to jack the ripper, had a kid by him (who looks rather young for being over 100 :p), and spends time with wherewolves and vampires and such. sounds like your average normal woman to me. :p

That pic is great. I am looking forward to seeing Sanctuary, all the details so far sound good. Amanda's character sounds realy interesting, and I'll bet she does a great job, and the new hair colour looks great.

Re: Helen/Amanda 'Santuary' appreciation thread
Happy Valentines Day!!
I wonder if there will be any Ship in Sanctuary? especially for "Helen" I'd love to see how Amanda would play an "out in the open ship" maybe a Ship set in Victorian times..

Count me in with the can't-wait-for-this-show-to-start crowd. I just watched the teaser on the Sanctuary website. That was Amanda with blonde hair holding a gun, right? It looks like she is in Victorian garb.
I hadn't seen that pic of Amanda as Helen with the dark hair and the gun until I saw this thread. WOW!
I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS SHOW TO START!!!

I'd love to at least check out Sanctuary. And I will - when it starts. :( I just checked out Flash 8. It's $399 USD. Nope. Not in the budget. It would scrap AT3. :(
So, when it starts I'll do the ttrial. Then leave it alone.
But I hope ya'll enjoy it.

things i'm excited about finding out about helen:
1 - did she know jack was jack the ripper when she was engaged to him?
2 - what or whoever helped her achieve long age, why did it effect her daughter too?
3 - is helen a normal human, or did something happen to her to make her like one of the santuary ppl?
4 - 'can' helen die?
5 - what makes helen tell her daughter the truth about her heritage? (i'm thinking she has too, from what amanda said in her recent 'urban rush' appearance)
(list will continue when i think of more. 'lost' just started :p)

Re: Helen/Amanda 'Santuary' appreciation thread
*Cross posting from the SaGC thread*
From the AT chat today - for those of you who couldn't make it:
Regarding Sanctuary: Amanda loves the concept, loves the character. Helen is very eccentric. She has lived a long time, seen alot, and has an incredible perspective on life. Amanda said it's nice to have a different look, a different walk and a different voice after 10 years of doing Sam.
On being an EP: She's onset all the time, involved in decision making from how to shoot, casting, editing, etc. She says she's learned alot.
On directing an episode - it's possible if the show is a hit
When asked if given one day to live over and over with no consequences ala WoO, what would she choose to relive - she said her first day of high school, the day after Olivia was born and the rest would be censored - adding what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. ;)
Oh and when asked about her favorite thing about Olivia she said "her sense of humor". She talks nonstop and is very articulate. Regarding the new puppy and Olivia - he's a big dopey boy and Olivia's bossy. The get along fine. :)
Hopefully the transcript will be up on the site soon.
-
Re: Helen/Amanda 'Santuary' appreciation thread
I've checked out a book about Jack the Ripper from the library and am intrigued about the whole multimedia concept about this show. They weren't kidding, considering a show that will air on the internet is dragging me away from my computer to read a book....

Re: Helen/Amanda 'Santuary' appreciation thread
ok someone just posted 3 links on amandatapping.com maybe you guys are also interested in things...I know it isn't only about Amanda and Sanctuary but more about Sanctuary itself...But still...
There is now a blog for the show:

Little angel Olivia is another alpha in training - another leader! Hehe.

Soooo,
What kind of perspective would extreme longevity or virtual immortality give you?
You save all your old clothes.
Traffic jams, grocery checkouts, waiting for Sanctuary to start – all fuss and nonsense.
Health maintenance and retinol based face creams take on a radical new level of significance.
High school thankfully fades to nothingness.
The projected 5 billion year remaining lifespan of the sun becomes a factor in planning family reunions.
:P :P :P
I do wonder how a persons' perspective would change. Do moments become more important than millenniums? People more than tasks? Do you stop worrying or worry more? Cool to think about...

I'm intrigued about the concept of an internet show and *very* excited to see Amanda playing a new character....especially an "eccentric" character. I don't know if this show is going to be up my alley or not but I'll give it a go.
I don't know how AT is finding the time to do Sanctuary, 2 SG-1 movies and 14 episodes of Atlantis. Guess it's that "never being late" thing. ;) :)

Re: Helen/Amanda 'Santuary' appreciation thread
lol i dont think she has to be there that often because its alot of greenscreen and Damiens has been working on this for 2 years. Putting together the "set" would be the msot time consuming part IMO and so AT could probley do this on weekends or in the Hiatus which is around now i believe so thats how she has found time, cramming this in to the hiatus.

To me she comes across as a person who is probably really organized and enjoys staying busy. It's a matter of multi-tasking and keeping on top of things. My husband is great at it, but me -- not so good.
I would imagine that playing Sam Carter over the past ten years has become rather mindnumbing in that she gets up at 4am and goes to work without thinking just like millions of other people. You are so used to doing the job that you often do it without really even thinking.
However, Amanda appears to be really excited about this new Sanctuary project and her role as EP. She's probably enjoying being a part of back side of the creative process and probably thinks of it all as a learning process. And as a female in the entertainment business it's probably a very wise move on her part.
I don't think she actually starts shooting any of the Stargate movies or Atlantis until April, so she's probably filing her time now doing what she can for Sanctuary, helping with editting and promoting the new series, but I'm sure she's probably enjoying every moment of it.
-
Re: Helen/Amanda 'Santuary' appreciation thread
I hope she is an intregal part of the Sanctuary team, heck im trying to be as involved as possible, so maybe ill get to work with her. It would be amazing to do so and i agree that she does seem to be able to be a workaholic and have alot of fun, but thats because the stargate working enviroment has to be one of the best ive ever seen, everyone seems happy and playful, thats exteamely rare in the entertainment business. Im sure she will thrive in this project because 10 years is along time to keep sam carter perky and fresh, a change of scenery and project is probley something she is really enjoying, which is great for a new and innovative series like this.

It's amazing how much more productive and organized you can be when you're excited about a project. Sometimes it even makes up for lack of sleep.

I'm really looking forward to this show. Helen Magnus sounds like an interesting character and AT looks great in the preview pictures. I'm even starting to get used to those shots with her with dark hair. Do we know anything about computer requirements that will be needed to view it? If the preview works for you will the show?

This is from the FAQ's on the SanctuaryforAll site:
What do I need to play Sanctuary?
- A computer that can display a minimum resolution of 1024 x 768
- The ability to support Flash 8.0

What they don't reference is user ability. While I'm not a computer idiot, I don't tend to do a good job of figuring out computer stuff on my own. For example, gaming?

Hi Everyone,
Wow Sanctuary is getting more and more exciting isn't it..
I tried to join the Sanctuary team last week but they haven't e-mailed me back:( I keep checking my mail including my junk folder but no e-mail from them, I don't know what to do about it I really wanted to be part of the team does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? I sent an e-mail to the contact us e-mail today telling them of my problems with "joining the team" but have no reply yet..:( Thanks for the links Eve(RepliCartertje) *runs off to check them out*

Re: Helen/Amanda 'Santuary' appreciation thread
Someone had expressed a concern about episodes expiring after they were downloaded. Here is the answer from Dan "The Man" Woodland. :)
There is NO WAY that webisodes will expire. Once you pay for it, it is yours for as long as you want. I have had a few e-mails about gift cards and the ability to buy episodes to burn for friends/family. This is a really interesting request that we will seriously consider. Keep all the great ideas coming...

Re: Helen/Amanda 'Santuary' appreciation thread
So, any word yet about more interviews for Amanda? I mean, we all know that the internet is far-reaching on it's own, but I sincerely hope that Amanda will still be doing interviews. Perhaps there will be a flurry of them the week that Sanctuary goes live. (You know - when a movie is about to come out, all of a sudden the lead actors are on every talk show the week leading up to it.) She can plug Sanctuary, talk about the final SG-1 eps and her move to SGA. I'd think that all TPTB would want her to have as much exposure as possible!!!
Anxiously awaiting more Amanda...

Damian Kindler and Amanda recently did a radio interview about 'Sanctuary' with a show called "Slice of Sci-Fi." It is a radio show that is released on the internet and also broadcast on the XM satellite network.
Right now, the interview is scheduled to be released on the web on February 28th (according to the Slice of Sci-Fi site). I believe DK said that it would be broadcast on XM sometime next month.

I would imagine that this is subject to change, but you can keep an eye out for it. I can't wait to hear more about the show.

Re: Helen/Amanda 'Santuary' appreciation thread
Found this quote in a Grammy interview with Alan Cross (radio personality)... thought it was kind of interesting...
"Is prime time television even relevant to people under 25 anymore? Outside of a couple of programs, maybe not," he says.
"There's a huge generation gap between traditional distribution of media and the new online world. The online kids don't get this idea of not being able to get what I want when I want it wherever I happen to be. The idea that I have to be in front of a TV to see something at 8 o'clock on a Sunday night is like, 'What? No, I'll just go on YouTube and get whatever I want.' "
So, ignoring the YouTube bit... Woohoo Sanctuary, leading the way!!! :D

Hey, its the 28th has anybody gotten to listen to the interview yet? (MUST GET NEW COMPUTER BEFORE SANCTUARY)
By the way, it looks like the Sanctuary forum may hit post 2,000 really soon. Add that to all the posts here and on other boards, and I think this is going to be a hit!

Well Amanda was suppose to be their Slice of Scifi #98 interview according to their calendar, but it looks as if the Slice of Scifi #98 interview today was actually Earl Newton, so I'm not sure if the one with Amanda was rescheduled or not because there is nothing in their March calendar as of now.

It won't be on TV, but they are looking at releasing on DVD.
Don't know the release date yet. First 4 episodes will be free and then pay for each one after. No pricing yet.

Re: Helen/Amanda 'Santuary' appreciation thread
there's SOOOO much potential in the sanctuary saga. just think...
helen's 157 years old. just what has she seen/witnessed in this time?
i'd *love* to see flashbacks to helen's times during the decades. imagine a 60s flowergirl helen :p, or gun-slinging cowgirl helen, or helen of the 1920s... the list goes on with what we could see of the many eras of helen. i can't wait! :D

A new Google group has been created for Sanctuary.
http://groups.google.com/group/sanctuary_for_all/
Several zip files have been added to the files area of the group that contain the scenes from the Teaser and Trailer with the audio already removed. So, for those of you who haven't chopped up the trailer into clips yet, we've saved you some work. :)

Helen Magnus Disscussion Thread
After seeing the first three episodes of season 1 i'am excited about seeing whats to come and i'am evan more exited about finding out more about Helen where she's been , what she has encounterd who she's loved and what other sectrets she has had to hide and also if she could have a darkside that we have yet to see .
1.Could Helen have a darkside like Druitt?
2.Could the cure for her be in Ashley?
3.When did she notice a change in Driutt?
4.How did she hide her preganacy from Druitt?

Interesting questions :D
1) No I don't she has a darkside like Druitt. I think she is lonely and doesn't care what others think of her. She seems compassionate toward her patients and still after 130+ years enjoys learning and discovering different abnormals. I do wonder after all her years of fighting and protecting if she ever gets tired of the fighting, especially with no end in sight. She could still be fighting for another century. I think that would take it's toll mentally and physically.
2) I think it depends on how Helen got the gift/curse and when she got it. Still too early to tell.
3) When did she notice a change in Druitt? That's a good question. I hope they explore that in flashbacks this season or next :D Since they have made changes to other character's back story I'm not going to rely on the webisodes. In the opening credit there is a diploma for Helen from a Medical School. Was Druitt her first patient in a regular clinic or at the Sanctuary? I think that's an important distinction and it will clarify if he was abnormal before they met? And how does Helen's blood change him? Did he already have his power and it just allowed him to live longer? Or when her blood mixed with his DNA the side effects were his power rather than being immortal? :P Helen didn't explain in the episode how old John is or how he is able to be in this time period... only that she is 157 years old. So we are still waiting on John's explanation.
4) I think John knew she was pregnant. I don't think she hid it from him. In the episode I think he knew all along Helen was pregnant. The question in my mind is how did he know what she looked like and she was born in this century? Did he just ask around... or has he been keeping tabs on them? He must have found out at some point that she froze the embryo, because it has been 130+/- years since they were engaged and he knew Ashley was his daughter. So still lots of questions to be answered :D

Re: Helen Magnus Disscussion Thread
Ive been thinking about the episode The Five and what Druitt said to Helen at the end of the Sanctuary For All do you think that Helen had to give the other's some of her blood or do you think she can trust the rest of The Five ?

Every show has to have an adversary, there has to be conflict. I think John is Helen's advisory and the Five is the Sanctuary's. I think the Others and the cabal all work for the Five. Episode 3 spoilers What if the Five have their own abnormal Sanctuary but it's not a safe haven. What if they are responsible for Helen's longevity? Helen is trying to keep the location of the Sanctuary a secret. Is it just to protect the patients/residents from the outside world, or is their a more sinister group she is trying to protect them from. All of this is jut my opinion I haven't read any spoilers about the Five except that they promise it will be revealing episode. :P :D

Re: Helen Magnus Disscussion Thread
I've just been watching the opening theme and in it , it show's the Titanic do you think Magnus has been on or went on the Titanic ?
-
Re: Helen Magnus Disscussion Thread
She may have been a Titanic survivor..or more likely was escorting an "Abnormal" ,who might have caused the damage to the so-called "Unsinkable Ship" when it escaped her supervision....purely speculation, but worth a guess.:)

ooh, interesting idea! :D
it'll be revealed that the ship sunk because helen was hunting a bad abnormal and it bit the ship and made it go sinky. :p

I believe going by the webisodes Helen's father had his own Sanctuary back in victorian london when Helen was still a student .
My theory is on how Helen obtained the pure vampier blood is that perhaps within the Sanctuary her father owned there was one remaing pure blood vampier talikng refuge in the Sanctuary and in doing so Helen knew this vampier she was able to blood sample from him and then she found a way to make a syrum from it so it could be tested . just a theory .

And I'll tell you why, it's because of Amanda's own words: "There’s an episode called Requiem which for me personally was the bravest work I’ve ever done as an actor. I don’t think I would’ve been able to do that had I not felt so safe." Also that interview Amanda did with Tony which talks about going crazy :samanime24:.
I can't wait to see what Amanda delivers, I always wanted to see what Sam going crazy would look like, so I can't wait to see Requiem :).
And the pics, I've seen make it look that more awesome ;).

One of the great things about a long-lived character like Helen is the potential for fascinating stories like this.
-
Re: Helen Magnus Disscussion Thread
ok...she did say she froze the embryo? Did that confuse anyone? lol...how did she do that?

I totally agree. Her character was around for some of the most pivotal events in recent history and most likely interacted with some of the most influential people during that time. I hope we get some stories like that in season 2, like seeing Helen during WWII or working with Einstein.
About Helen being on the Titanic with an abnormal, in the opening titles when they show the newspaper with the Titanic headline you can briefly see a mermaid-like creature in the bottom-left corner of the picture. Whenever I see that I always wonder if it's the same mermaid we saw in the pilot. :)

Yes she mention's it in boath episode 1 and webisode 4 :D .
How she froze the embryo is a mystery of the Sanctuary but i believe that the Sanctuary is far a head of it's time plus having THE FIVE perhap's someone she worked with long ago was able to help her in removing it and freezing it .

Re: Helen Magnus Disscussion Thread
The question I would ask in that case is who would've built the device and that person must've built it quickly as you can't keep an unmade Ashley for too long in the warm air.

I still believe it could have been Tesla who could have built the device in which to keep Ashley frozen though know Helen and Tesla arent on the best of term's perhap's at the time they were and he helped her out also Ashley know's Tesla .

Re: Helen Magnus Disscussion Thread
With what i have read about what is happening in REVELATIONS i cant wait to see it :sam:
What other ability could Helen have gained from the vampier blood ?
The reason i ask this is becase each of the other memeber's of THE FIVE gained two abilities .What do you think could be Helen's other ability?
-
Re: Helen Magnus Disscussion Thread
I'm tempted to think her extra bonus is speed ,but seeing as both Carter and Magnus are quick-draw shooters...I think it's going to be something more subtle than Amanda's ability to outgun onscreen monsters .;)
All the Five seem to have been endowed with longevity and delayed ageing ,judging from Druitt,Helen,Tesla and Peter Wingfield's character ( Watson ? ) in a cap I saw.
Druitt said it was the most simple and elegant of the gifts recieved...so is it an emotional gift (eg : the compassion and love for the Abnormals ?) ,or is something that will be clearly different from the "Others" ?

would someone like to make a sam or helen vid of this song ("wait for sleep") by 'dream theater'? here's a link for the song:

from the dreaminess of the song, i think it would me an awesome melancholy-ish video. :)

You would think wouldn't you. She had no control over the parasite taking over and john had no control of his powers going all wonky on him.
I think that is why, now, she is a little more amenable to him being around.... Cause she nearly killed will and Will killed her. So....
And yeah, killing whores is a no no... lol!!!

BUMP BUMP...
Hey, Why this thread is so down ? It is about our Helen . we can start discussion.
Yesterday, I saw Pavor Nocturnus and Veritas. I have to say, that Helen was awesome.
I was afraid of her in Veritas. :-(
What kind of opinion do you have about her role in these two episode ?
Did you like it, or didn´t ?
And if you like watching Art about Helen , I did some avatars..

You are right. It's been quiet around here lately.
Oh i loved her in those two episode...but I like her in every single episode^^
Pavor Nocturnus was really hard to watch espacially the "shower scene". And the revealling end....quite sad. Sometimes it looks like she got over Ashley but in episodes like this you see how broken she really is.
Veritas was awesome. I would've never guess what she did to herself. I like Helens darker side :D
Your avatars are lovely ;)

Will to Helen : "Oh my God, you are totally crazy."
Yes, he was right. Heh, she is crazy, but nicely.
I want Helen to be my mother. :)
