FYI - for the curious... This is the book, and what it is really about:

The Post-American World by Fareed Zakaria

The New York Times bestseller, revised and expanded with a new afterword: the essential update of Fareed Zakaria's international bestseller about America and its shifting position in world affairs.

Fareed Zakaria’s international bestseller The Post-American World pointed to the “rise of the rest”—the growth of countries like China, India, Brazil, and others—as the great story of our time, the story that will undoubtedly shape the future of global power. Since its publication, the trends he identified have proceeded faster than anyone could have anticipated. The 2008 financial crisis turned the world upside down, stalling the United States and other advanced economies. Meanwhile emerging markets have surged ahead, coupling their economic growth with pride, nationalism, and a determination to shape their own future.

In this new edition, Zakaria makes sense of this rapidly changing landscape. With his customary lucidity, insight, and imagination, he draws on lessons from the two great power shifts of the past 500 years—the rise of the Western world and the rise of the United States—to tell us what we can expect from the third shift, the “rise of the rest.” The great challenge for Britain was economic decline. The challenge for America now is political decline, for as others have grown in importance, the central role of the United States, especially in the ascendant emerging markets, has already begun to shrink. As Zakaria eloquently argues, Washington needs to begin a serious transformation of its global strategy, moving from its traditional role of dominating hegemon to that of a more pragmatic, honest broker. It must seek to share power, create coalitions, build legitimacy, and define the global agenda—all formidable tasks.

None of this will be easy for the greatest power the world has ever known—the only power that for so long has really mattered. America stands at a crossroads: In a new global era where the United States no longer dominates the worldwide economy, orchestrates geopolitics, or overwhelms cultures, can the nation continue to thrive?

        And in other news..

I though CA couldn't get any more Illegal Immigrant friendly. Now Governor brown is signing a bill into law removing the term "Alien" from the law books and labor code, cause its "Discriminatory"..

        Also

Ok, i thought i had heard it all in the way of crazy lawsuits. BUT this takes the cake.

"Illegal immigrants are suing the U.S. government for what they say was psychological and physical harm due to their detention, according to an Associated Press report.

The five illegal immigrants, all hailing from Guatemala, Honduras, or El Salvador, are seeking millions of dollars in damages and claim they received poor medical care and suffered psychologically from being detained.

Andrew Free, the immigration lawyer representing the plaintiffs, told the AP that the government’s use of family detention violates their rights and that the government fails to provide the “standard of care that they owe to these detainees.”"

Sorry, but what rights do they have to sue ICE for being detained due to being here illegally?
What next, criminals suing COPS for arresting them?

Tony Abbott has expressed a desire to go to war with Syria .. With no American help..

Nice distraction from the current gaffes he's done.

But yes, a "convenient distraction" from human rights issues.

              WHY?

Why does a country like Australia suddenly have to worry about human rights issues?

Is this the kind of thing people wanted in government?

Have you SEEN our track record with human rights??

People want the government to reflect the will of the people, and the will of the people is some cases is very much for Human rights (marriage equality for example) and in some cases, not so much ("boat people"). Abbot's dickery in the former looses him people, but usually helps him in the latter.

I know I agree but my point was in a country like ours it shouldn't be an issue.. Also the human rights commissioner Gillian Triggs. She's doing a good job but the current government keeps wanting to attack her on every front because she keeps pointing out what they are doing. Manus Island and such are inhumane... I'd love to see people like Abbott, and Howard in the dock at the Hague

Probably second-worst foreign affairs columnist after Thomas Friedman.

There's been some interesting stuff happening in the relationship between Israel and Arab states lately that's largely flown under the radar in English-language media but it's pretty significant.

First, there's increasing military cooperation between Israel and Jordan. Israel has gifted Jordan some 16 decommissioned Cobra helicopter gunships. They were supposed to be sold to Nigeria last summer to help them fight the Boko Haram, but the Obama administration blocked the sale, ostensibly because of "concerns about the Nigerian military’s protection of civilians when conducting military operations". So Israel chose to gift them to Jordan to help Jordan fortify its borders with Syria and Iraq against ISIS. These are fairly old helicopters that are probably going to be used for spare parts rather than flown as is, but still, it's an act of direct military assistance from Israel to an Arab state.

Another significant sign of an emerging defense alliance between Jordan and Israel was that a squadron of Jordanian F16 jets that have recently crossed the Atlantic to participate in a major air-to-air combat exercise were escorted by Israeli fuel tanker planes for mid-air refuelling.

There's also some discussion that Jordan may receive several F16s that the Israeli Air Force is about to retire from service.

There's also a LOT of economic cooperation quietly going on. A Dubai-based online car rental company has announced that it will begin providing services in Israel. Israel exports natural gas to Jordan and Egypt (and to think that just a few years ago it was Israel who depended on natural gas from Egypt!). There's a major joint water desalination project going on - a large water desalination plant is being built in Jordan to supply Jordan, southern Israel and the Palestinians with fresh water (a side project of the same deal is resupplying the slowly disappearing Dead Sea with the brine that's an inevitable byproduct of desalination). Israel is currently considering employing Jordanians in the tourism industry of its Red Sea resort of Eilat.

As a travel agent, I see quite a lot of bookings by Israelis with Royal Jordanian, Qatar Airways and occasionally Gulf Air. I happen to be in charge of my agency's communications with various airlines' foreign offices so I've exchanged both emails and phone calls with these airlines' representatives and they have always been helpful and cordial, haven't felt any hostile or unprofessional attitude from them.

It's still a bit odd requesting a kosher meal on Qatar Airways though. I keep wondering who runs the kosher kitchen in Doha.
If Algeria introduced a resolution declaring that the earth was flat and that Israel had flattened it, it would pass by a vote of 164 to 13 with 26 abstentions.- Abba Eban.

Not quite. Muslims can eat kosher food, I often book kosher food for our Muslim customers when halal food is not available. But it doesn't work in reverse, because kosher food requirements are more stringent.
