The Ventura Film Festival is the largest film festival in Ventura County

The Ventura Film Festival is the largest film festival in Ventura County, with a 7 day event each summer that includes over 100 films at multiple venues such as the 1,200 seat capacity Majestic Ventura Theater and the Century 10 Theaters in downtown Ventura, California. The Ventura Film Festival also has a weekly film event named the “Friday Film Event” showcasing local and international film submissions and dinner at one of the VFF sponsoring restaurants.

The Ventura Film Festival is not your typical non-profit organization with a board full of community leaders and donations from old money sponsors. Instead the Ventura Film Festival is a 100% volunteer based organization run by people who may not be well known around town but want to make a difference in the world around them and have a good time while working for a good cause.

It all started when the Ventura Film Festival founders were watching the film Ferris Bueller one weekend afternoon and decided to launch the Ventura Film Festival. The founders of the VFF represent 3 generations of Ventura residents and are Ventura High and Buena High graduates and have a rich background in film, theater, acting, music, performing arts, business, and environmental activism. One of the Ventura Film Festival founders also founded the Orange Film Festival and Street Fair in the 1960’s as well as the Springfield Opera Company.

Ventura Film Festival volunteers are a fun group of Ventura and Southern California area residents from all walks of life, including students from Brooks Film Institute, Ventura College, Santa Barbara City College, UCSB, USC, CSUCI, Cal Lutheran University, and UCLA. Typical volunteer activities range from just socializing and eating pizza at Jimmy’s Slice to telemarketing for sponsorships to volunteering at other film festivals to bring in more ideas and experience. Ventura Film Festival volunteers have also volunteered at the Phoenix Film Festival and the Santa Barbara Film Festival.

Last year’s Ventura Film Festival featured local filmmakers such as Dylan O’neil, David Parsa, Craig Harris, Don Blueberry, and Heather Hudson as well as international stars such as Marianne Hettinger (US dance champion, New Yorker of the month and Tonight Show regular) and the world premiere of Marianne Hettinger’s debut film, Mango Tango.

The Ventura Film Festival is a place where emerging talent can be seen. Films that premiered at the Ventura Film Festival have gone on to win national and international acclaim, including Marianne Hettinger’s Mango Tango (best director Detroit Independent Film Festival, Queens International Film Festival) and Kate Perotti’s Momz Hot Rocks (Viola M. Marshall Award – Rhode Island Film Festival).

The Ventura Film Festival has signed up over 600 volunteers and continues to grow and improve on a weekly basis and continues to add seasoned veteran volunteer advisors and board members including Eric Covert (Disney/ABC Vice President), Richard Walter (UCLA Screenwriting Professor), Scott Shiffman (CSI Miami Producer/Director, Producer ~ The Contender), John Godina (US Olympian and World Champion Track & Field Athlete), Dustin Dean (Ventura High Graduate and Current Lionsgate Film Executive.) New volunteers can sign up at the Ventura Film Festival web site http://venturafilmfestival.org.

The 2010 Ventura Film Festival is June 28 through July 4 at the Majestic Ventura Theater and other select venues in Ventura, California and will include over 100 films from all over the world and local Ventura filmmakers. Tickets are $25 for an all week/all access pass to all see all the films and attend all the after-parties.
