HELP! Ubuntu wont load :(

I just installed Ubuntu version 6.06 and now there's a big black screen asking me to log on, I managed to log on as root but I dont know how to load the GUI I'm so confused

never mind, i've found the problem

Sounded like the XServer wasn't starting, what was the problem?

I downloaded the server version, not the desktop one which is the one I was supposed to download

Ah! That explains it. Now I know to keep my eye out for that if I or anyone else runs into that problem.
