    Well, lessa-see... *shuffles through notes*
Djinni/Jinni - Singular, male or female.
Djinn - Plural, male or female.
    Jinniyah - Singular, Female.
Genie - Accoustically just like 'Djinni,' though is supposedly Latin-based rather than Arabic-based; I suspect it's all a case of similar-sounding words getting mudded.

well yes, but in modern mythology, when someone says genie, everyone thinks about the big blue guy in aladin.... so when one is refering to the originally persian demon who granted wishes through cruel and sadistic michief, i prefer to use the term djinn or djinni...

Ah, yes, there is that. As much as I like Aladdin, though, Genie isn't the first thing to come to mind when someone says 'genie' around me. I tend to think more along the lines of what you have in mind when you say 'djinni.'

well, i tend to be anal about mythology and since the djinn was originally a persian concept that has been assimilated by many cultures and are called by different names in each [( imps, griots, daemons, to name a few )] the original persian term is djinn... so for me it's djinn or we're talking about some other mythos....

Ah, I know what you mean. I'm a little picky as well. While I don't mind Disney's approach in and of itself at all (being a wonderful creative take on the subject) the fact that the general populace's idea of a genie/djinni is what they've seen played by Barbara Eden and Robin Williams kinda annoys me.

Awhile back, I actually took the djinn and modelled them into a workable, plausible culture for a sci-fi/fantasy type setting. I had The 1001 Nights in mind when they were developed, so they're not the... um, cuddly modern versions. I also went about it from a quasi-scientific angle, so while my genies have some pretty impressive abilities (shape-changing ability, limited telekinesis, pretty good thermokinesis, and sometimes the ability to project illusions into other people's minds) there's no actual magic involved. In the end, I had a race of overall short-tempered, arrogant people who had a lot more power than they should have likely been allowed to have - and that's what I tend to equate with 'genie.'

ever read the Bartimus trilogy? well it's supposed to be a trilogy, but number three isn't finished yet.... it's pretty good, paints quite a nice picture of the majickal world, complete with imps, djinns, afrits and other various types of daemons, how magic in humans isn't exactly what everyone thinks.... though it is a bit childish, being teen fic and all, but you might like it

I've got the second one but it's in a literally two foot high pile of books I need to read.
