RACE TO Escape” sets modest goals and reaches them.

In some ways you could call it the claustrophobic cousin of “The Amazing Race.” The contestants here aren’t trying to make their way across India, just get out of a fairly small room.

They aren’t even looking at a big payoff, by TV game show standards.

There are three people on each of two competing teams and the winners split a maximum of $25,000 — which becomes less because the total drops as the team uses up more time.

Also, any team that is stumped by a clue and needs to buy the solution must forfeit $5,000 of its potential winnings.

So the contestants on “Race to Escape” are really in it for the challenge, trying to help their team get out of the room faster than the unseen other team in an identical room.

The contestants may start the contest, for example, handcuffed to a table. They have to figure out how to find the combination that unlocks the cuffs. Then they have to decipher a series of cryptic clues involving objects in the room.

When they get it right, they move on to the next challenge, and eventually they open the door.

Jimmy Pardo is the unobtrusive narrator for all this as closed-circuit cameras record the action.

The fun for the audience, naturally, as with all game shows, is trying to come up with the answer before the contestants.

Here that means shouting phrases like, “No, no, forget the antique sword! Look in the elephant!”

It’s a different competition than watching someone try to remember an obscure fact about history. While it's not the best competition game show ever, it's decent summer fun.
