I'm a Daniel/Janet shipper. Lifeboat was shippy for me. But, let me ask everyone who is not a Daniel/Janet shipper, and maybe especially those who hate the idea of them together, do any of you feel that pairing was ever forced on you? that it was taking up the whole show? That it was crowding out other aspects and shafting other characters?
Well, I was fast becoming a Daniel/Janet shipper when Heroes happened but we won't go there (gotta love fanfic). No, I didn't feel like it was forced but I don't feel that way about Jack and Sam either.
I have heard that Amanda is taking a lot of flak over the whole Pete issue and that she has been receiving some nasty letters about it. Personally, I think that's distasteful and unnecessary. Attacking Amanda for something her character did is just WRONG in my book. I'm sorry, but it is.
Yes, it is!! I read that as well and I was upset and disturbed that people who call themselves fans could be so nasty--of course, I guess "fan" is short for "fanatic" but that's another issue. Amanda is a talented actress who does not deserve to be accosted under any circumstances. No matter WHAT PTB decide to do with her character...
If I had worn an "I hate Daniel" shirt (regardless of how I feel about the character), I have no doubt that I would have been verbally accosted- at the very least!- by legions of pro-Daniel fans.
Were you *thinking* of wearing said shirt? That would have been very interesting, to say the least.
Edited to say:*Okay, so my jokes aren't that funny, I just couldn't think of another way to express the giggles I got about this comment*
Nah. I don't hate Daniel... and I DO value my life! It wouldn't be worth all the vitriol and nastiness I'd be subjected to. And there's always the chance someone could get violent about it.
Well, I've always been rabidly anti-JS ship (the idea of them together is something I'll never get behind) but at least before I didn't see it.
Me too. Before Grace, Ship was an optional extra.
But I have found that s7 is as unshippy as the rest, if you ignore one episode and two-to-six scenes from the rest of the season. If it's that way for s8 as well I'll be, well not happy, but certainly relieved.
i vaguely include the actors as PTB, considering they can control how they play a scene.
I beg to differ with you here--it took CJ 8 seasons to get hair and I know he's been begging for a while. While I think the actors have *some* control over how things are played, I don't think they have enough to decide the introduction/withdrawal of a character (Pete, for example). I'm sure they can ask for what they want but it's up to PTB whether to grant it or not.
i figure that if they were to do s/j ship, or any main character ship, the way they portrayed s/p ship, then we're done for.
Yes, I TOTALLY agree!! They could have shipped her with someone else WITHOUT the love scene--oy! They said they wouldn't ever go there and now they've gone and done it, oy (beginning to remind me of your post regarding the X-Files).
Dani you are the lucky one to get quoted but I want to kind of touch on everyone's comments.
First I agree that when the *ship* was more subtle it allowed every fan to do their own mind game. Unfortunately we are passed that point and we can't go back. I to was a Daniel/Janet Shipper in a sense. I would have loved to have Daniel be able to show that he too had moved on from his wife's death but alas TPTB never went that direction.
As ShipperAhoy said - I too like some romance in my TV viewing, but too That is just me. I like that warm and fuzzy as part of my entertainment. I love Science Fiction and I love romance and when you can combine the two well I am just happy
Shadow makes an excellent point that it has really just gone overboard though. But I really feel that TPTB did it to themselves. The fans weren't clamoring for Sam to have an *outside* BF the shippers were happy with the UST for the most part (no not always but usually) and the people that didn't want to see could ignore it...Then TPTB decided OH we should turn this up a notch. I have NO IDEA why and they have NOT done a very good job either IMHO. It is just to late in the series to be doing all this. Maybe if it had been earlier but not 7 years into the series.
All that is happening now just *feels* like manipulation even to me and I want Sam & Jack to end up together but I don't know if the cost if going to be worth it in the end....I shall wait and see.
Well said, Tame! It is beginning to feel like we're being manipulated. Not just the shippers but the anti-shippers as well. If she has to have a bf--and IMHO she didn't because it feeds that "I need a man to complete me" angle and I hate that stuff--then WHY NOW?? Why, when they're about to end the show, would they possibly want that other than to drum up publicity and stir an already turbulent pot.
And yeah, the major vital part is handling ship well. TPTB can't and everything they do only makes things worse, IMO. If the spoilers about Jack in Threads is true... that's just sad... sad and pathetic... And so incredibly plot devicey I could scream!!
Hey!! ONE thread per person, thank you very much!
As for the spoilers, well I'm a shipper and therefore a hopeless optimist so I like to think it will turn out all right. It is getting to seem like a really angsty romance novel though--oy!
The thing is, I wasn't ALWAYS so rabidly anti-ship. I used to enjoy some of the subtle moments and while I never really wanted to see them together, I wasn't exactly against it, either. But TPTB have ruined all that for me. Their gross mishandling of the situation (my opinion) has turned me into a rabid anti-shipper who cringes every time Jack and Sam are in the same scene.
Really? Now that's interesting. It's a shame though that it was ruined for you. It's also a shame that you feel that way when Sam and Jack come on the screen. I know that I was a bit miffed and negative about Sam when all those interviews came out but I was able to put that aside after much wailing and gnashing of teeth (it wasn't pretty, I assure you, and I have the snark vids to prove it ).
(((((((((((((Shadow))))))))))))))
*Shadow squirms and tries to pull away but Marimba's hug is just too much*

See there, all better now!
*don't hit me, PLEASE, Shadow*
I am just sitting here Laughing my a$$ off right now..
She really does have the vids I have seen them
yeah thats what I was laughing about...what did you think
You know what... I can definitely see where you are coming from on this...
I never really thought about *Ship* being an issue until this season. I was content to have Sam & Jack have small subtle moments and in the end Sam & Jack ...go fishing and I could imagine what I wanted.
But for some reason TPTB decided to make SAM EVERYONE'S girl WHILE still wanting Jack...that made no sense to me and has really MADE the *Ship* an issue for everyone. So I come right back to my original thought TPTB have NOT handled it well at all.
I still want Sam & Jack together.. but I know it is going to be a lot different than what Iever dreamed and probably not as good as it could have been
Well, I'm sure I won't get quoted for agreeing with you (happens too often, methinks) but I do agree that TPTB have MADE it an issue--and there was no reason for it other than to fan the flames. I was also content to imagine what I wanted. Then we ALL could have lived happily ever after! Now, they've given themselves virtually no way out of a sticky situation.
It sets them up for "deus ex machina" and for those who don't know--it means "god in the machine" and it's a Greek drama device for getting characters out of impossible situations. The gods just show up and fix everything (Shakespeare liked this device in certain plays too). I really, really, reALLY, REALLY HATE that type of ending!!!!!!! It's usually unbelievable and almost always unsatisfying! Okay now that you've had you're literature lesson for the day...
I want Sam and Jack to be together but I want it to be on realistic terms--not because Thor intervened! (though I have read some cute fanfic to that effect) Not because any one got dumped and that person just *had* to be with someone! I DON'T want a cheesy ending and I felt that it has been handled so badly of late that we are being set up for that!
K, while I think I'm becoming a frequent flier here of late, I wanted to bring this post over here from the "Threads" spoiler thread and respond because I know you post here...

Personally, the more I see of Wishy Washy Sam, the more I think she doesn't deserve Pete. He deserves to have a woman who will love him for being HIM, and not just because he's a convenient way to scratch an itch or because someone is "settling" for him.
While I don't care for Pete and I absolutely positively do NOT agree with his actions, I think if he truly loves her he doesn't deserve not to be loved in return. (Gads! I can't believe I just said that) If Sam loves Jack and IMO this seems to be the case, then it is not fair of her to string another man along. I think she's doing out of fear (to take a chance on Jack, that Jack won't return her feelings, etc) but it doesn't make it right. I didn't like his "stalkerish" behavior but if he did do it out of love as TPTB keep insisting, then it makes her look bad. Not the kick-a$$ Sam we all grew to love at all. Just MHO as usual.
Exactly, Marimba. I hate Sam/Jack ship, but if she truly loves Jack (as TPTB seem to be implying/telling us) then she should go and be with him and let Pete crawl off to mend his shattered heart. NO ONE deserves to be strung along the way Sam is stringing Pete.
