TVonDVD: Stargate SG-1, Season 7 –
The Ancients, The Humans & The Goa'uld

**snippity doo dah**
The seventh season DVD set of `Stargate SG-1' covered a lot of
territory. Besides the Anubis arc, there was also an arc about the
search for the Lost City of The Ancients; Senator Kinsey's continued
efforts to seize control of Stargate Command; the discovery that
Kelowna's naquadria was not a naturally occurring mineral; the manner
in which Jonas Quinn was needed to arbitrate peace on his homeworld
[see `Kelowna' and `naquadria']; and the death of a core member of
Stargate Command's personnel.
Once again, there were standalone episodes and mythology eps – with
the overall mythology informing, but never overwhelming the
standalone eps. For a series in its seventh season, that's a pretty
remarkable achievement.

Once again, Amanda Tapping's Samantha Carter got to be the emotional
heart of the series – though the remarkably restrained Daniel Jackson
did encroach on her territory. In a fitting manner, Tapping directed
the Shanks-written `Resurrection' episode – and it was one of the
most beautifully shot eps of the season. Tapping has a gift for
creating atmosphere and texture [she refers to both in the commentary
track – but gives a lot of the credit to her crew].

The various directors' features and 'Beyond the Gate' segments are
mostly excellent. Again, Tapping impressed me most - with her `Beyond
the Gate' segment, and her commentary on `Resurrection'. Various of
the commentaries by Peter DeLuise and Martin Wood are also more than
usually entertaining – both men have the ability to make the
technical stuff fun, and neither is afraid to relate odd anecdotes
into their commentaries.
Grade: Stargate SG-1, Season 7 – B+
Grade: Special Features – A+
Final Grade: A
