Canadian Drama THE LISTENER Premieres June 4 on SPACE and CTV
              Tue. May 05, 2009; Posted: 11:50 AM

TORONTO, May 5, 2009 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX

Follow the exploits of a telepathic paramedic in the new SPACE/CTV Original Series THE LISTENER, premiering Thursday, June 4. Airing at 7 p.m. ET/PT on SPACE and in the coveted Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET timeslot on CTV in simulcast with NBC, THE LISTENER becomes CTV Inc.'s latest original Canadian dramatic series to also air on a major U.S. network in primetime (visit spacecast.com and CTV.ca to confirm local broadcast times). Following the SPACE/CTV/NBC North American premiere, encore episodes of THE LISTENER air Saturdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on SPACE, on demand on spacecast.com and the CTV Video Player at CTV.ca, and on the go from popular online download stores.

A SPACE/CTV Original Production produced by Shaftesbury Films in association with NBC and FOX International Channels, THE LISTENER chronicles the experiences of Toby Logan (Craig Olejnik, The Timekeeper, In God's Country), as he learns to master his telepathic gift to help people in desperate need while unravelling the truth about his own mysterious past. Set in Toronto, the 13-episode, 60-minute series made its worldwide premiere in March on Fox International Channels in 180 countries around the world, including UK, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Poland, Brazil, and Turkey. The international premiere of THE LISTENER opened to strong audiences, finishing first in its timeslot in virtually all territories*.

"THE LISTENER is yet another example of how Canadian creative is making an impact not just in North America, but around the world," said Susanne Boyce, President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc. "With the rise in popularity of genre programming in the mainstream, THE LISTENER has presented a terrific opportunity for both SPACE and CTV to work together on a series that will uniquely appeal to both audiences."

"The support and enthusiasm we received from SPACE and CTV since the beginning has allowed us to create this internationally successful series," said Christina Jennings, Chairman and CEO, Shaftesbury Films. "With a strong partnership that also includes NBC and Fox International Channels, THE LISTENER is an excellent example of how broadcasters and producers can work together to create first-rate drama. We're extremely proud that the momentum for the series has been building and anticipate the show will resonate with SPACE/CTV audiences."

In THE LISTENER, Toby Logan is a highly skilled paramedic with a secret - he can read minds. Until now, Toby has kept his ability hidden, exploring its possibilities only with his long time mentor and confidante Dr. Ray Mercer (Colm Feore, 24, Changeling). Helping to save lives by providing advance medical and trauma care alongside his energetic partner Osman "Oz" Bey (Ennis Esmer, BILLABLE HOURS, Young People F*#king), THE LISTENER follows Toby as he tries to help people in crisis and, in the process, heal some of his own wounds.

While his professional life is in check, Toby's personal life could use its own rescue. It's a good thing he has Oz's good humour to keep him centered and living in the moment. And with the help of the tough Detective, Charlie Marks (Lisa Marcos, FLASHPOINT, KEVIN HILL) and his ER doctor ex-girlfriend Olivia Fawcett (Mylène Dinh-Robic, STARGATE ATLANTIS, DA VINCI'S INQUEST), Toby realizes his gift can help others. THE LISTENER also stars Arnold Pinnock (LIFE WITH DEREK) as George Ryder, Toby's boss and Anthony Lemke (RUMOURS, THE LAST TEMPLAR) as Brian Becker, the Detective Sergeant.

Launching May 21, THE LISTENER Online Experience at listener.ctv.ca will allow visitors to experience the world as Toby does and "hear" people's thoughts, see their inner-visions, and read their minds. Set in a 360 degree panoramic recreation of Toronto's Dundas Square, the site will be refreshed weekly with interactive features, online exclusive video and previews of upcoming episodes. THE LISTENER Online Experience was created by Shaftesbury's Digital Division Smokebomb Entertainment in conjunction with SPACE and CTV. Visitors can also check THE LISTENER website during the weeks leading up to the broadcast for an exclusive sneak preview clip.

In the series premiere "I'm An Adult" (Thursday, June 4 at 7 p.m. ET/PT on SPACE and 10 p.m. ET on CTV), Toby (Olejnik) rescues a young woman from a fiery car crash, but is then troubled by visions of her missing son. Clearly traumatised and frightened by the abduction of her son, Toby is unable to get her to share any information. And as his own fears for the child's well-being increase, he realises he's going to have to act quickly to make sense of the mental dissonance that plagues him.

In the second episode entitled "Emotional Rescue" (Thursday, June 11 at 7 p.m. ET/PT on SPACE and 10 p.m. ET on CTV), Toby receives telepathic visions of an explosion, and is then able to save his former foster brother from an apartment fire. But with a reputation as a tweaker and cooker of crystal meth, the victim becomes the suspect. Toby is convinced his foster brother is telling the truth and becomes determined to track down the arsonist responsible. He just doesn't realise that he will fall under suspicion when Detective Charlene 'Charlie' Marks (Lisa Marcos) informs him that the fires look like the work of an emergency responder with a "god complex".

THE LISTENER also airs Saturdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on SPACE.

THE LISTENER was developed by SPACE and CTV with Shaftesbury Films beginning in 2006 with a pilot produced in 2007. Originally ordered to series by CTV and SPACE in December, 2007, THE LISTENER was picked up by NBC in February, 2008. Produced by Shaftesbury Films in association with SPACE, CTV, Fox International Channels, and NBC, the series is funded by the CHUM Trendsetters and Risktakers fund. Executive producers include International Emmy award-winner Christina Jennings (MURDOCH MYSTERIES) and Scott Garvie for Shaftesbury Films, Michael Amo (BLESSED STRANGER: AFTER FLIGHT 111), Tom Chehak (REGENESIS) and Clement Virgo (POOR BOY'S GAME). Fraser Robinson is Director of Content for SPACE. Brett Burlock is Director, Program Development for CTV. Susanne Boyce is President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc. Shine-Reveille is the international distributor.

                        At GateWorld:

                        SECOND CHANCES

                        GateWorld talks with Paul McGillion

GateWorld hasn't spoken with Paul McGillion since his surprising return to Atlantis in Season Four's "The Kindred, Part 1." Since that time, the series has been canceled and a new show is in production. Needless to say there is much to discuss!

Paul updates us on his current projects, from his cameo in the new "Star Trek" movie to a developing indie film with a friend. We chart our way back through the last two and a half seasons, starting with "Sunday," all the way through to "Enemy at the Gate" (Beware minor SPOILERS for this episode!) and the fall and rebirth of Atlantis's cowardly lion.

The interview runs 31 minutes, and is available in video, audio, and transcript form! The video version is available in Flash format at GateWorld Play.

For the audio version you can listen online at your leisure, or download it to your MP3 player.

Richard Dean Anderson will be appearing in at least one episode of Stargate Universe. Otherwise, I think he's enjoying the retired life, and is occasionally followed around parking lots by those pesky TMZ tabloid photogs, who do, bizarrely, treat him with respect (in comparison to most other people whom they taunt to get a reaction).
