Award: Legends builds best food
Snoopy and Woodstock have helped a Langley company win an award - and will soon be feeding local families in need.
by Erin McKay
A Langley company topped the annual CANstruction competition.
But the real winner is the Langley Food Bank.
Legends Memorabilia was named the best entry in this year's CANstruction contest, which encourages participants to transform food into works of art, to benefit hunger relief organizations.
"We won the big one," said Legends president Paul Brown, whose entry, More Than Just Peanuts, won first place overall.
"We teamed up with Industrial Brand Creative to help design and build something unique," said Brown. "For our entry, we decided to build Snoopy on his doghouse - complete with Woodstock."
This year's CANstruction theme was "A Blast from the Past," and Legends, the only company from Langley to take part, used 13,000 food items for the structure.
When the display is over, all the food that Legends used in the winning sculpture - including tinned goods and boxes of macaroni - will be donated to the Langley Food Bank.
Funds to buy the food for the project were raised through an online charity auction, which will continue until March 12 at www.members.ebay.com/aboutme/stargateprops.
Legends got help for the auction from the stars of the sci-fi television series Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis. MGM Studios and Tribune Entertainment also donated items.
A team of 20 volunteers took about 14 hours to build the Snoopy structure, and the construction was filmed in time-lapse photography. A two-minute video will be on the Legends website next week.
Last year, Legends created a tribute to the B.C. film industry for CANstruction 2004, and won the Can Do award for creativity and effort. A time-lapse of that entry is available at:

The 2005 CANstruction display will be set up at Vancouver's Canada Place until Saturday, March 12. Admission is free with a donation of a can of food.
Legends Memorabilia is at 6360 - 202nd St.
