He shrugged at that and continued, "Hera isn't the last, she's just the most powerful. There is also Minerva, Vesta, Neptune and Ceres. Saturn broke away when he took his old name of Kronos. The Jaffa say he's been defeated as well."

Kym nodded confirmation, "Yep. SG1 did him in. Got us a sweet mothership out of it, for a while. I'd have to look up what finally happened to it."

Gaius explained again to Williams, who had missed it the first time, "We've been here less than a day, doctor. I do say, it's nicer being a guest than a prisoner." He lightly nudged Kym, his erstwhile captor. "We brought some Aran refugees who escaped from Hera."

David chuckled a little about the prisoner versus guest barb. "I can imagine that, Tribune." When he continued about the refugees, he added, "Refugees ? Hmm. Such a tragedy. I feel for those people, and I am glad you managed to rescue them from Hera's clutches." He shook his head. "Well, it's no wonder that Goa'uld chose Hera to impersonate. She was quite a vicious goddess, even if she embodied motherhood. Prone to a lot of jealousy and killing, as I recall from the myths, she always found a way to get rid of her husband Zeus' mistresses, and she was often quite ingenious at this, too. Those gods of old were very fertile, it appears. Hera - and especially Zeus - had a LOT of children. Hera's were Ares, Hebe, Hephaestus... Hmmm. I should really let you look at the books in my lab, Tribune. There's lots more, as well as references to the Roman names. You might find the history there fascinating." He smiled and blinked, looking up at the Roman.

At Ryn’s awkward admission Temperance felt her eyebrows raise ever-so-slightly. New? She mentally shrugged it off and followed the other woman’s gaze, her eyes alighting on Captain Tyler and the Roman. “Ah, entertaining guests?” she guessed. The Romans were as fascinating to her as they were to the next anthropologist, but for the moment she was content to observe them from a distance.

Her gaze lingered on the foreign man for a moment before she turned back to Ryn. “Well, I don’t know if it would interest you at all, but I had hoped to work on translating the inscription on a figure I found in the backlog from Earth. I may have to surrender my pride and drop by the linguistic lab though. Languages aren’t my sharpest skill…”

Temperance rather doubted that it would pique the other woman’s interest. Military types weren’t usually all that in to studying archaeological finds.

“It’s not exactly pressing though,” she admitted, nibbling an odd green fruit. “Did you have plans for the day?”

(((OOC: I don’t know how much of Ryn’s background Temperance would know, though I’d guess very little. Sorry if there’s something she should know that she doesn’t. )))
"Thank you .... Temp." Ryn grinned upon the permission for the name shortening. She hadn't missed the interest level shown in the funny-dressed guy, either.
"Yeah. That guest is an ally, an offworlder actually, I think he passed by the armory last night. I'm not really sure about the funny costume, but I think he's a Jaffa, cuz there's mark on the forehead. Probably a Free Jaffa. That's all I know about him. If you want to talk to him go right ahead, since he is talking to Dr Williams there, ummmm he said he was a ....." Ryn searched for the word. "Linguist. Yeah."

When Temp asked about her plans, she shook her head no. "I don't have any, and I'm sorry, I don't know much about artefacts and stuff, so I'd be bored I think.... well, if you want, we could go talk to Kym about getting you access to the ally ... guy...person ? I'm sure she'd allow it."

((no, Temp wouldnt know about Ryn's origins since they didnt meet before today I think, and Ryn is a little shy now with talking about that. There's been instances where she did talk about it and instantly got reprimanded since it was classified stuff... That was in Foreston. Though, she got told that base folk are allowed to know, so feel free to ask away if you want to. ))

Sharp was going to make a joke about Uranus, but he felt it wasn't exactly the 'potty humor' crowd. 'Kids are so much eaiser to work with...Davis probably would have laughed though.' He smiled, keeping the joke to himself. As mention of the mothership from Chronos came up Sharp muttered an "Oh God...". He guess he had said it too loud, so he explained. "Fully functional mothership...very limited records. Absolutely no idea where it is now." As he was assigned to the Alpha Site and was preparing its F-302 bay, he had seen mention of the mothership, and was in the middle of going through the records when earth blew up. "Ah well.."

He continued to fall silent, surprised at the doctor as he rambled on and on. He gave Davis an 'Are you serious'? look, and waited for Gauis's response.

When Gauis mentioned the prisoner to guest comment something clicked in her head, "I know now where I've seen you," she looked at him, "you looked familiar but I really couldn't pin-point from where."

"Yes," Gaius nodded and bumped his shoulder against Kym's, "I was one of the unwelcome visitors to your planet a while ago. Captain Tyler and I had an encounter in the forest. She kindly refrained from slitting my throat."
Kym winced and covered her face, "Sheesh. Do you have to keep bringing that up?"
"Of course," he answered firmly, "Very few have ever beaten me so soundly. Be proud of it."
Tyler shook her head and thought to herself, I was crazy when I did it. Not so stellar.

The tribune schooled the dismay out of his face, he wasn't a scholar and didn't want to be. Keep his tone warm, he dodged the task, "I'm sure our scholars would be thrilled to read your records. It's fascinating to them to learn how our brothers who weren't taken fared in history."

Crawford assumed his regular seat at the small table in the corner of the mess hall. He set his tray down before sitting himself. On the tray was a plate with a slice of plain pizza on it aswell as a bottle of Sprite. Curtis rolled his sleeves ups and began on his meal, staring absently infront of him as he chewed.

((OMG the Uranus joke Not that I know the actual joke but I do get the idea what's it about. ))

Claire gave out a low whistle at the story Gaius told her when she noted the look on Sharp's face, nearly ended up giggling, "What?" she mouthed in full visage of innocences and shrugged a the same time.

And the ship talk reminded her that she had to tackle her own translations and soon. Knowing she hadn't touched them since after the debrief two days ago. She knew there was something worth finding.

Sharp grinned as Claire whispered to him. "Nothing..." He looked away, but couldn't resist. "I'll tell you later." He went back to the conversation in time to hear the Roman.

"Very few have ever beaten me so soundly. Be proud of it."
"Ho-oh! So that's why you two keep 'bickering'. The legionaire isn't as prime as he once was eh?" Sharp let out a laugh or two at the jab. 'Huh, so that's how the two know eachother...'

That was unexpected to say the least.
‘Herbs? Ooookaaay…’ “Um… yeah, I guess you can call it that…” Carrie finished off her juice to gather her thoughts before continuing, feeling her just newly gained hope slowly fade away.

“Sooo, how do you become a specialist in herbs then?” The politeness and the curiosity kicked in, though the doubt was still there.
“As an example, where I come from, we do about 5 years in medical school, then 2 years under close supervision, like an apprenticeship to get our medical degree and then up to another 5 years depending on what kind of specialist you want to become… Is your equivalent of our education anything like that…?”

Delen noticed that Carrie was baffled with her revelation, but she couldn't understand why. Just because now they were refugees running to keep their own lives, it didn't mean the Arans weren't once advanced in their own right. They just weren't advanced enough to stop Hera's invading force.

She could also sense Carrie's lack of trust in natural medicine which was unfortunate. There were probably a world of medicine worth plants and herbs outside the base and they were probably desperate for running low on an industrialized supply when those may not even be needed. She took it upon herself to convince the other woman of her point of view and the merits of having nature as your ally when dealing with life and death matters.

"Aran medicine has become very advanced in the last centuries. We were able to synthesize artificial drugs, but we always had it as a rule amongst our collective of General Practitioners to use natural medicines extracted from Aran plants of all kinds and active principles if they were cataloged. Not to mention trying to expand on such catalog." She explained a little of the workings of Aran medicine.

"You become highly respected when you can prescribe a medicine in the right dosage by heart, but for this you have to study a very extensive catalog of substances together with their properties. That's because a medicine can become a poison when given in the wrong dosage. Natural or Synthesized." She explained further.

"My story is quite usual on Aran society. My parents were GPs, I am a GP, my sister was one too. You could say I've been trained for this job since birth, giving more importance to subjects like chemistry and biology since school and studying from my parents medicine books. I knew how prescribe before I even knew the workings of a disease. When the traditional schooling years were finished by the age of 16, I joined something called a Practice School. It's where you learn the ins and outs of your chosen craft. It's four years long total in an internship scenario. Studying day and night. Our schooling is very intense and fast paced. The last year in Practice School was an internship in a school hospital with real patients and real cases. When I finished that, I was considered a GP and could under law tend and prescribe to patients. I knew all that was known to our science about the functioning of the human body, its diseases, its capabilities to heal itself and how to help it do it better in order to avoid pain and suffering of the patient. As much as humanly possible. I have seen some technologies that can heal with a touch since I left Ara. It's really impressive, but doesn't work for me. I don't have what it takes to activate it within my system. It's called Neqida, if I recall correctly....." Delen explained the Aran schooling method and a bit of their society and finished mentioning the impressive Goa'uld healing technology. At least, impressive to her.

                      [ Dr. James Parkers - Mess ]

James' tea was cold and his food was pretty much eaten. Sighing he stood and placed his tray on the side before nodding to the kitchen staff. It must be difficult for them to cook for such a large base and without the backup of Earth. He berated himself, his thoughts had reached hidden ground. The subject of Earth was always hidden away. And now he had stupidly brought it to the front of his mind. Memories of happy times cane back to him. He pushed them away, he didn't have time. Deciding to distract himself he headed for the linguistics lab. Planning to immerse himself in work.

Temperance smiled back and let her gaze creep across the table to the Roman again. “He seems to have his hands a bit full with the doctor,” she said.

Temperance had been keeping an ear open to their conversation ever since it had turned to anthropologic subjects. She couldn’t say she agreed with everything the excited linguist had been saying, but the fact that he was a linguist interested her. He might be willing to lend a hand with her translation if she ended up needing it.

If she could get an introduction from Ryn, well, it would make things that much simpler.

Temperance nibbled her lip thoughtfully at Ryn’s suggestion to speak with Kym. She didn’t have any real reason to speak with the Roman man, only a personal interest in the living history he represented. Others were sure to be studying him and his culture. She wondered in passing if he might know of Min, but rather doubted it. The go’uld who used Roman or Greek names didn’t seem to interact much above the radar with the go’uld who twisted Egyptian mythology to their needs. Otherwise there would have been more of a criss-cross in the mythology.

Finally she shook her head. “I don’t think it’s the best time to bother the gentleman, he looks a bit…harried. But you seem to know Dr. Williams, perhaps and introduction there? He might be able to help me with my research…” Temperance looked to Ryn hopefully.

(((OOC: Sorry this post took so long Ryn, I was running all weekend. I don‘t think ol‘ Tempy has the nerve to ask Ryn about her background, especially after so short an acquaintance, though perhaps in the future. Delen - Aran Refugee

‘Okay, different culture, different angle…doesn’t have to mean they’re lesser developed, right?’ Carrie felt her cheeks almost turning a bit red as she continued to listen to the older woman across the table ‘Their way’s just… different’

She held up her hands defensively and grinned.
“Okay, okay, I think I got the message. So when it comes down it, we’re not that different after all, since most of our pharmaceuticals originate from some sort of plants, and we all have dedicated most of life to our work… Though I must admit that your way to reach the goal of becoming a fully fledged doctor might take a little bit longer then ours, and that is not meant in a bad way…”
As she spoke there was an idea starting to form in the back of her head, it just needed a little more time. She smiled and opened the lid of her laptop again, and continued on the track Delen had laid out.

“I think you might refer to a substance called “Naquadah”, and if so I’ve seen those devices used a couple of times as well, it’s quite impressive. We’ve got two, maybe three persons here on the base that has the ability to use that sort of technology, none in the Infirmary staff though and we try not to use them unless it’s absolutely necessary, after all it is foreign technology and you never know when they will stop working, right? I’ve got some papers on that if you want to read later on.”

Carrie gave Delen a mischievous grin over the screen.
“So, are you up for a challenge? And don’t worry, this is not me trying to put your abilities at a test…” she suddenly frowned and sighed “it’s me, getting totally stuck in an area of medicine where I don’t really belong and I could use another point of view on things. What do you say? Are you up to it?”

"Well ... I don't know him very well. I only just met him. He seems ok. A little flaky. But ok." She said, staring in her teacup for a second or two, then looked over toward Williams, her face somewhat pensive. "I somehow get the impression that his current behaviour is how he normally behaves. I don't know. Like I said, I only just met him, and I know that first impressions can go wrong.".

She paused. "But okay, I'll help you with your introduction. You're a scholar, too, apparently so... least I can do to help relations there. Us military are supposed to serve and protect you civilians after all..." She smiled there a bit, still shy though there was a humorous glint in her eye.

Meanwhile at the other table, David nodded. It was somewhat an expected answer from the Roman. After all, the man was a warrior, not a scholar. Warriors didn't tend to be the patient types, which was what you needed when researching or studying.

"Hmm, nevermind then, Tribune. I'm just glad I can interact with you and your proud people. Say, are there any more of you around on the base? Or is it just you and the refugees? Did you by any chance bring scholars with you?"

Crawford finishes his meal quickly and stands up. Looks around and shrugs to himself. He puts his tray back on the tray rack and leaves the Mess Hall.

"Ho-oh! So that's why you two keep 'bickering'. The legionaire isn't as prime as he once was eh?" Sharp let out a laugh or two at the jab. 'Huh, so that's how the two know eachother...'
"It was a lucky shot," Kym protested again, "I caught him unaware. Can we drop it, please?"
She was seriously uncomfortable discussing her episode of 'Furia' and wished she'd never mentioned it to anyone.
Gaius took the change of subject that the doctor offered, "No, sorry. Just the men of my honor guard and a messenger. Possibly your General and I could arrange a visit to our city of Nova Roma for you. A couple of weeks maybe."
