"You know of all the places I miss is Canberra. It's beautiful and you'd have loved seeing it. Though the winter gets cold becuase of the snow in the mountains nearby but in Spring everything is in bloom and it is so bueatiful. All the different scents from the diferent flowers are wonderful. Though not good for those who suffer hay fever and such things. I was never truely happy in New York. Its was too over crowded and busy. Canberra was a bit more planned and spread out in its planning. I'm glad I went to New York and got to experience what I did when I was there. I would never have met Brian or had the kids If I hadn't gone to New York. I also wouldn't have this fabulous job if I hadn't have gone either."

"I dunno why women grow quicker then men in high school either," Astra said with a shrug. "I was called all sorts of names because of my height at school."She hoped her voice didn't give away to much emotion when she spoke about school to Kylie.

Astra didn't say that she was teased by some of the bullies at school either. Playing sport and hiding in the school library had been her refuge at school, though the bullies always found a way to catch her. She'd gotten beaten by them a few times; suffering broken bones, cracked ribs and bleeding noses. They'd broken her left hand once, she couldn't play any sport let alone do any school work for she was naturally left handed. Astra had learnt from an early age that if you reported the bullies they just got you a lot worse then they intended. School had been a painful and terrible experience for her.

"I had to learn to be good at sport as my family were all sporty. They played archery, AFL, Rugby League, cricket, basketball, soccer, tennis etc," Astra said. "If I wanted to play with them I had to learn to be tough. That's if they let me of course. Most of the time they didn't want their baby sis hanging around, getting in the way. I tell you it was hard sometimes growing up as the only girl. I used to complain to the old man when they didn't let me play. He'd ordered them to let me play and they did 'cause they were afriad to say no," Astra said smiling.

She remembered all the times she'd gone to the old man becuase her brothers wouldn't share or allow her to play with them. She'd adored them and wanted to be like them; tough, strong and could do anything they wanted. She'd pretty much worshipped the ground they walked on. She'd learnt as she grew older that her brothers were just as human as she was. That discovery had been a bit of a shock to her.

Astra saw David walk in and waved to him. She felt bad that he was siting by himself as she rather liked the quiet linguist.

Kylie smiled to herself at the comparision between Australia's capital city, and America's largest city. "I spent way too much time in the Big Apple myself. But I guess that's what happens your mom wants to be a Broadway star." It was the first time that Kylie had ever mentioned her mother in front of the other woman. She tried quickly to cover up the slip, and continued to talk hoping that Astra didn't get a chance to process the words. "As for Canberra, I heard that it was a lovely place, always wanted to go for a visit one day. I remember how Ireland always a beautiful winter when I was doing some of grad work there. The way that the ice just clung to tree branchs was magical."

Once again Kylie noticed the subtle changes flash across Astra's expression. She somehow got the feeling that school was an uncomfortable topic for the other woman. For Kylie, school had been a grounding force. It gave her something to concentrate on to escape the unpleasentness of home. She remembered those days all too well. And just for an instant she felt a connection to Astra that she hadn't felt before. It was probably the same connection that Daniel had felt with her, and it wasn't unlike the connection that she felt with Devin. She was slowly coming to realize that she wasn't the only one with a past that was best left untalked about.

"Yeah, I can only imagine having only guys around all the time. Guess you had to do something to show that you could hold your own around them. Although, sometimes it's just as much of a battle to have other girls around. The competition never ends between sisters." It was never her foster brothers who had hurt her, it was always her foster sisters. The worst thing that a foster brother had done to her was to pull her hair. But the girls......there was the crown of thorns, and Roman candle, not to mention the chewed up, very sticky bubble gum that doubled as shampoo.

"I went to a few broadway shows with Brian, not many though. I hated drama at school." Astra didn't push the issue about Kylie's mum. "My mum was a pilot like the rest of the family. She was a Squadron Leader - Major. Dad was a Group Captain - Colonel. I'm the only who decided not to be a pilot. I thought my parents would have a heart attack when I annoucned I was going to New York to study archaeology and languages that could have been dead for thousands of years. They got over it after the first offical shock waves and it sunk in for them."

It was hard proving to my birg brothers that I was just as tough and smart as they were. They just saw me as annoying and wanted to get rid of me half the time," Astra said.

She polished off the baked potatoe and chicken. She drank seversl mouthfuls of water and started working on the bread.

"You know you should be careful how fast you eat, Kylie. I don't want to have to practice any first aide on you," she said half heartly, when Astra noticed that Kylie had pretty much finished. "Unless it's just me being slow, and I thought I was a fast eater. At home you had to eat fast or miss out."

Astra observed Kylie giving her an odd look and wondered what that was about but decided not to pursue it.

"I don't know about having sisters. My experience from my school days would agree with what you said."

'Now how did I let that bit slip?' Astra asked herself.

The only two people who knew about her school days were Daniel and Brian, both were gone now.

          [ Dr. James Parkers - Mess ]

James entered the mess and took a quick glance, he noticed Kylie and Astra having a discussion and made a mental note not to approach them. He shuffled along in the line and spotted David. He was sitting on his own. When James had some food, a cup of tea and whatever the special was. He walked over to David, but deciding to be polite, asked first.

"Do you want some company?" James was unsure of what the other man would say. He would be quick happy to talk to David but wouldn't mind if the other man wanted his space. James didn't know him that well.

Kylie wasn't sure how to respond to Astra's description of her parents. Instead, she simply smiled and nodded polietly as the other woman re-counted how they had reacted to her chosen profession. Kylie's mother had never gotten the chance to see her daughter grow up and become a linguist. And her father had lost too many brain cells by that point that it didn't really matter to him if she was flipping burgers, or studying dead cultures. He had never known what she was studying in college, or even that she had gone too college. The words that her father's lawyer had spoken those long years ago came back to her now. Only living realitive. If Kylie hadn't been there to clean up the mess that her father had left behind from his years of alcoholism, then no one would have done it. Her last set of foster parents, on the other hand, the Stevens, the ones that she actually felt like cared for her, had been very supportive of her life aspirations and goals to work as an anthropoligist, and her love for languages.

The comment about being a fast eater brought Kylie out of her memories, and she giggled slightly. "Oh don't worry about me. I've always been able to eat fast. Comes in handy when you only have a five minute break between classes or translations." Again, Astra's comment about home struck a nerve with Kylie. In her childhood home, she had 120 seconds out of every 24 hours to eat whatever she could. And if she didn't fill up then, she went hungry until the next feeding time. It was during this time, that she also learned to go for the high calorie foods first, and to hide what you couldn't gobble down at the speed of light.

"School can be rough on all of us. So can work, and home. It's a fact of life. Nothing is ever easy when it is human nature to compete, and to always come out on top no matter what the cost, no matter who gets hurt. The goal is forever to win, even if it means trampling and belittling someone else, a peer, a child, someone weaker than you are. That is the consequence of the process of becoming victorious." Kylie said very quietly to herself, seemingly swept away into her own world for a minute. Coming out of her revivre, she blinked a few times, and smiled sheepishly. "Sorry." She whispered to the other woman.

Astra gave Kylie a worried look. She reached over and squeezed the other women's hand letting her friend know that she was there if she ever needed someone, realising that they probbably had more in comon then she originaly though. She finished off he bread rolls, put the rubbish in the bin and put the trays away. Astra saw James come in and waved to him. She then faced Kylie again.

"So you want to go back to the lab or go for a walk?" Astra queried softly.

"Oh, hi," David hurriedly wiped his fingers on a napkin realising he was making a mess of his food. "Uh, sure, sit down, sit, it's fine. Got the chicken, too, I see?" He didn't really wait for an answer and continued the conversation as if the other man had answered. "So how's the uh, video going?"

Kylie blinked once when Astra squeezed her hand. The gesture came as a suprise and it made her realize just how odd her statement had probably come across. She returned the gesture quickly, allowing a genuine smile to fill her face. "Thanks."

She had been so wrapped up in her own thoughts that she hadn't seen James enter the mess hall and had to shift in her seat to see who Astra had been waving to. She smiled at the archeaologist, and was pleased to see him headed to sit with David. At least the two guys could keep each other company for a while.

When Astra asked about where to head next, Kylie took the opportunity to check her watch. She was shocked that so much time had passed. It was now past time for her to meet Devin in the lounge. She gave Astra an apologetic smile. "Um...actually, Devin and I sort of had a date planned for this afternoon. Sorry, it's already past time for me to be heading that way. But we can talk more later if you'd like."

"Ooh a date with Devin,"Astra teased. "Lucky you! It's nice to see you happy and dating. I hope you have fun with him. Just relax and enjoy yourself while you can. We don't get much time off so grab it while you can."

"Catching up later would be a great idea. Maybe we should make use of the lounge area and watch a movie or something? I think that would be a great idea! Lay back and relax, chat, whatever you want to do,"Astra suggested.

Kylie nodded her head at Astra's suggestion. "Good idea. We'll definately have to plan a girl's night sometime soon. Probably after Devin and I get back from Foreston. It's going to be a much needed trip for both of us I imagine. I'll stop by the lab after Devin and I finish tonight. Hopefully you'll have a little more accomplished on the translation by that point." She smiled one last time at the other linguist.

Pulling herself up on her crutches, she glanced once at the trash on the table, and then back to Astra. "Um....would you mind throwing away my trash for me. I would, but......" she said nodding down to her leg. "Sorry."

Hobbling out of the mess hall, Kylie started to think about what movie Devin had picked out for the two of them to watch. Whatever he had chosen, she was sure that she would enjoy it.

"Good. Well I'll catch you later," Astra said, nodding her head. "Yeah well I'm hoppng to get some more done this afternoon. I may take a break later and head down to the shooting range."

Once Astra made sure thier table was cleared she left to head towards the linguist labs.

                            Lt. Vincent Valentine

Vincent waved Tim off, and continued chatting with Sharp about flying and stuff like that, then without warning his radio, which he'd tuned to SG-4's frequency only recently clicked on.

[Radio from C.M.Sgt Ray Bellano via SG-4's frequency]
                            "Lt. Valentine do you copy?"
                            "Yes... That Bellano?"
"Yup, you free at the moment?"
                            "I suppose, what's wrong?"
"I need you to come up to the Security office, level 3, it's about the shield tech."
                            "I'll be right there."
                            [/Radio]

With a slight sigh Vincent stood,

"Have a good day Colonel, I'd better see what Bellano's up to."

"I once thought it better to be right

It's a bit of a puzzle the whole thing and I don't really understand why we can't seem to make heads or tails of it. I guess the dialect will prove to be too... difficult. I hope not because it's really very interesting, but also equally frustrating." David said.
Out of the corner of his eye he watched Kylie and then Astra leave again. He absently wondered where both were going, then just shrugged. It was a free base and they were free to go where they wanted as long as either showed up to do some work. Which they had, so maybe now it was time for some fun, the linguist thought. He didn't really feel like it, though.
