    <Brig-Sgt. Pierce>

    Pierce got throught the line quickly just picking up a quick sandwich, and some chips, lastly he got a fresh cup of coffee, "No problem Kylie, just be back as soon as you can." He started to walk off, not really noticing anyone else in there, just focused on what he had to get done.

      Kylie jumped back from Devin at his sudden exclamation of suprise. Guess I deserved that, I did kind of sneak up on him. She thought to herself.

      After hearing Devin tell her what he had been thinking about so intently, she figured that she would have to forgive his reation, she would have been distracted too. Knowing that it could come off as sounding somewhat niave, Kylie asked, "Have you tried going back to sleep again? Maybe you'll have the same dream. Or if that doesn't work there's always hypnosis."

        "I haven't, but I don't think it's something that I can just dream back up. But I do know it's about 302s. And the StarGate..." Devin let his voice trail off. "As for hypnotism, it's to early for that, and too drastic, not to mention I'd probably look like a nut-job if I were wrong about this." Taking a sip of the coffee, he stared at the cup of pudding and said nothing more.

          "Hmmm...just a thought. Well, I'd better get back to work. I'll see later. Good luck." Kylie smiled and left Devin to finish the rest of his lunch.

          After refilling her coffe cup, Kylie made her way back down to the brig.

            Wolfing down the sandwich and pudding, Devin grabbed his coffee and headed to the elevator. Reaching over for the button for the floor his quarters were, he stayed his hand just before it hit the button. Reaching instead for the button that would take him down to the brig, he hit it and felt the elevator accelerate downward. Staring at the ceiling, he asked himself just what it was that his sub-concious was trying to tell him.

              Kylie entered the mess hall with Devin and was greeted with a wonderful array of smells. "Mmmm...something sure smells good. I think the cooks have gone all out tonight." Kylie inhaled a deep breath trying to decide just what smelled so good.

                Taking a whiff of the air, Devin said, "Hmmm.... I'd say soup." Closing his eyes, he continued to sniff, "Navy Bean. Garlic bread as well, and cookies, something with cinnamon in 'em." Gesturing to the line he said, "Shall we?"

                ((Well, g'night. I need to go take an eight hour nap.))

                  "Indeed, we shall." Kylie grinned as she took her place in line next to Devin. She selected a bowl of the Navy Bean soup and some garlic bread, as well as helping herself to yet another refill of coffee.
                  "Now we just have to find somewhere to sit." Kylie said as she looked around the room to find two empty seats.

                    Grabbing a bowl of soup, some bread, a cookie and some juice, Devin caught up with Kylie and searched for a pair of seats. Quickly shifting the weight of the tray to one hand, he used the other to tap her on the shoulder and point to a pair of seats facing each other. "How's there sound?", He asked.

                      "Looks great." said Kylie as she began to make her way over to the open chairs. After seating herself, and sipping a bit of her soup, Kylie commented, "You know, there aren't many things that I like better than a bowl of good soup. Except for maybe chocolate."

                        "I dunno," Devin said, "I've had some pretty good sweet potatoes. Mum always used to make them the best, and papa, he'd make a kick-ass cut a' steak." Taking a sip of the soup Devin asked, "Say, I've told you my life's story, so might I ask yours?"

                          Kylie had been prepared for the question. She knew that Devin would have asked eventually. "Well, there's not much to it really. I grew up in Manhatten, and went to college at Duke university in North Carolina. After earning my masters in language and anthropology, I went to work for a museum, mostly back office stuff, translating ancient writings and such for research purposes. Then I got involved in the Stargate project, and was working off-world when Earth was destroyed." Kylie knew that the answer had been vague and there had been plently of details that she had left out, but Devin didn't need to know about those yet.

                            Devin said nothing, instead taking a bit out of the bread. "I was born to Domovoi and Mary Almodeus. I came out about three minutes after my twin, Jacob. The two of us grew up in Chicago, protecting each other from the bullies. The two of us were inseperable until... Well, Jake, he decided to join the Air Force after High School while I went to California to study wormholes. It took me over ten years to understand why he left. I always thought it was because he didn't like how he always had to protect me. But now, now I see that he was actually protecting me, even though we were states away." Devin looked into Kylie's eyes, "Please, I'd really like to know more about you."

                              Kylie searched his face for a brief moment before taking a deep breath and beginning her story. “Ok. I don’t talk about myself very much. It’s extremely difficult to do so, but for some reason, I think I can trust you enough to tell you. I was born to Marilyn and Hank Stevens on a chilly October night. My mom died when I was only three, and I don’t really remember her except for her smile. Her smile was gorgeous, and even when she was so sick from the chemo that she was throwing up and losing her hair, she was still able to smile. I’ll never know how she did it.” Kylie took another breath before continuing. “Dad started to drink after mom’s death and within a couple months, he couldn’t remember what it was like to be sober. He came home one night screaming and throwing things at me. That’s the only memory I have of my dad. I was so young.” Kylie drifted into her own head for a moment before continuing. “A neighbor called the police and I was placed in foster care where I spent the rest of my childhood. I lived in about five or six separate homes. No one could stand to keep me for very long. The kid of an alcoholic, guess I wasn’t worth the trouble. I did very well in school, it was my one escape. I went to college on a full scholarship, and had a four point all throughout. Just after I received my second masters degree, I got phone call. My dad had died. I wasn’t sure why they had called me, but then I was informed that since he didn’t have a will and I was the only living biological relative, I was stuck picking up the pieces. I lost my scholarship when I didn’t return to school the following semester. That meant that I would have to wait until I had the money to pay for my own schooling to get my doctorate. I never got the chance to back. I really wanted to, but never had the money. The museum was my only option.” Kylie dropped her head and started to cry. “Sorry, I wasn’t going to do this.” Kylie searched for her handkerchief for a second before remembering that she had given it to Devin to use. She wiped her eyes with her hands. “Well, is that what you wanted to know?”

                                "Oh gods, I wish I could say that there was something I could do, that I could take you away and make it all better, but I can't." Reaching into one of his robe's pockets, he grabbed Kylie's handkercheif and handed it to her. "The best I can do is comfort you now and try to make the future brighter." Rubbing the stubble on his chin, Devin thought for a few moments before continuing, "One day, after I'd had my arm broken by a bully at school, as I was crying, Jake said to me, 'Dev, we're going to be miserable, that's our lot in this city. But that doesn't need to be what's going to happen to us later. The future's still out there and together, we can make something of ourselves. So don't cry, keep your spirits up, we'll find a way out- I promise.' I've lived by those words ever since."
