    THE WAY OF THE WARRIOR

Teal’c has undergone some remarkable changes over the years, but as Christopher Judge reveals, the former Jaffa warrior still has one big decision to make...

Stargate SG-1’s season eight has provided something of a catalyst for Teal’c, the Jaffa warrior turned staunch Earth ally. Following seven years of struggle against the Goa’uld, his nation has finally found a way to free itself of parasitical tyranny. The Jaffa are no longer bred to be the footsoldiers of System Lords – they are a free race. For Teal’c, this signifies the last in a long line of changes that have typified his life amongst the Tau’ri. And now, this loyal member of SG-1 has a serious decision to make. Will he stay on Earth and continue to find ways of blending into human life? Or will he return to Chulac and help the newly freed people enter a new phase of being?

For Christopher Judge, who has brought his resounding presence to the role since Teal’c first appeared in the pilot episode, Children of the Gods, this is a natural conclusion to the Jaffa’s long quest for freedom.

“Because it’s been going on for so long, it doesn’t seem as if, ‘Oh, and all of a sudden they’re free’,” Judge explains. “It has been a complete arc – we’ve had episodes that deal with that on-going saga. I think it’s definitely the right time to finish it off. Now it’s just left hanging regarding whether Teal’c will go back and be one of the leaders of the new Jaffa nation or whether he’ll stay on Earth.”

For Judge, what that decision will be seems pretty clear, particularly in the light of Stargate SG-1’s renewal. With the show set to run for at least one more year, the actor can’t see Teal’c choosing to return ‘home’ just yet – in fact he thinks that the Jaffa is more likely to settle even further into Earth culture.

“They allow us to be very involved in what goes on, and I do want the decision to have some weight – because obviously, if we’re going another year, we know what decision Teal’c’s going to make! I think what will help free him from having to go back to the Jaffa nation is that his son is now married [Sacrifices] and making his own way in the universe. And as much as Bra’tac and Ry’ac are his family, now the people on Earth are his family too. So I think there is also an affinity and a loyalty there. But I hope it’s not too dragged out and that every episode, that’s what I’m dealing with. I want to make the decision and then it to be over with. Maybe there will be instances where the Jaffa State needs SG-1’s help, but not just Teal’c’s help.”
