Stargate Fan's Tour of Colorado Springs

Oooh, can I start a thread?

Me and the hubby will be in Colorado Springs next weekend visiting his mother (yes, she actually lives there). I know SG1 is filmed in Vancouver and all, but there's got to be something Stargate related we can find to do in CS.

Any thoughts? Aside from visiting the actual Cheyenne Mountain complex, which is only open to the public in a future that's never going to exist.
Anyway I'm sorry, but that just happens to be how I feel about it. What do you think?

actually, cheyenne mountain is open to the public...but you have to book the tours months ahead of time and go through security

the springs is a great place.
Garden of the Gods is a wonderful, free, park in the center of town
there's the pro rodeo hall of fame, the olympic training center. seven falls is neat but manmade.

you should make time to shop in Manitou Springs, a part of colorado springs. plan to park and walk up and down the street. there's a couple hundred shops, many of which are locally owned and quite eclectic. if you like silver jewelry, there are a couple of stores that have great stuff for cheap prices

there are casinos in Cripple Creek, about 40 minutes away. the royal gorge bridge in canon city (40 min or so to the south) is also fantastic to see.

you might also want to go up to pikes peak. you can drive or ride the cog rail. i would suggest, however, that you do this late in your visit so you can acclimate to the altitude before going to the top of the peak. the drive is 19 miles and can be quite harrowing once you're above 11,000 feet. that's the treeline and all of a sudden you're on switchback roads with no guardrails.

the cog is taking a train to the top. it goes slower so the altitude isn't quite as much of a shock. the animals are used to the cog and it increases your chances of seeing a mountain lion or big horn sheep

the downside of the cog is that y ou only have 20 minutes at the top. so it's easier but limited while driving you can stay up there as long as you want...but there is that harrowing drive on narrow roads

it had been a few years since i've been there but it's a fantastic town
Where in the World is George Hammond?

I forgot how civilians could get inside to take a look, but definitely visit the Air Force Academy, particularly the chapel.

If you want to leave the confines of Colorado Springs, and you like shopping, I would visit Castle Rock, which is located about a half-hour away from Colorado Springs. It's a giant outlet mall, you'd probably enjoy it.
