    What do you make of a Re-Make

    With the Man from UNCLE movie coming out this August and a rehash of X-Files on the way, it got me to thinking about all those long lost series that were hot in the 60s and 70s but now virtually forgotten and only available generally on the net or dvd. Some of the concepts surely would still make excellent remakes in series form today and with cgi and more cash, the skies the limit. Here's just a few;

    VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA: Hokey by today's standards, but the concept of a futuristic underwater TV series has as much going for it as outer space concepts. An attempt was made but didnt take itself too seriously in SeaQuest DSV. But a serious high tech underwater futuristic scifi may just ride the wave of success.

    TIME TUNNEL: Back then they had to use material from movies for background historical shots, but the concept was fun seeing our two lost time travellers attend famous events in history and try to fit in while doing a little tweeking of the past. Still popular and coming out on blu ray early next year. Two telemovies have unsuccessfully tried to reboot the series, and they were pretty good efforts, but the accountants in TV land thought otherwise. We're into time travel stories. How about using cgi to go BACK TO THE PAST.

    THE INVADERS: The cold war paranoia series had David Vincent out to stop those nasty Nazi like, Communist like, Terrorist like aliens from conquering our world through their secretive nefarious naughtiness. Top show and could be done with aplomb today with so many enemies of the World today to use as templates. We need some paranoia back where it belongs...on the TV screen.

    COMMANDO CODY: One for the ancients. The original Rocket Man of the screen...and that was theatre screen because this was pre-TV stuff. Commando Cody is still available as about four serials on DVD and has him fighting invaders from the Moon and Mars with his flying jet back pack and his hokey spaceship, that was probably borrowed from the Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers serials of the 40s. Tongue in cheek stuff at best today, but Cody's flying sequences are more believable than anything today on the big screen, and the idea of a jet packed flying hero, of the Ironman type, could make good TV fodder.

    That's just a taster there folks. Which remakes would you think would succeed?

      Fairly good show. But Buster Crabbe did both Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers in the 40s serials and for their time they were quite innovative. Trouble with Buck Rogers of the 25th Century was that though entertaining, its was pretty light and could have been much more dramatic. I would suggest Duck Dodgers of the 24th and a half Century would give it a run for its money.

            Top shows Pakar. Both were on the drawing boards recently for remakes and it seems both were dropped for reasons unknown. Blakes 7 in particular had the makings of a fine retake with CGI and a little more money. Some top stories in the original series and yes I love them both. In fact I understood Blakes 7 was given the OK by one of the production companies for at least a pilot for new series and even had the actors ready for their parts. What happened?.

            Wasnt as enthused, Annoyed, with Land of the Giants, but then with CGI it could have been made far better than the original.

            Try these oldies for remakes

            THE CHAMPIONS: Secret agents with enhanced abilities gained after plane crash in Himalayas and treatment given by a Shangri-la type society

            ROCKY JONES: One of the first TV scifis, very popular in its time but one of the biggest budgets of late 50s. Set in future and Rocky and crew a bit like Scott McLoud Space Angel, a kind of interplanetary space cop. I think there is one in production just cant recall the name. Of course there ws the Brit series SPACE PRECINCT and then there was ANDOMEDA.

            U.F.O: Another from the Anderson stable. Again there's talk of a movie version of the show. Elements of THE INVADERS in this one.

            LOST IN SPACE: Always thought this one could have been done far better. Original was too cutsy. The movie version had some good elements but got lost somewhere in the story. Understand there's a remake being considered at this time.

            EARTH 2: Another of those shows that promised much but didnt produce. The concept of a colony on another planet was also tried by OUTCASTS, a one season effort that missed an opportunity to shine.

            HYPERNAUTS: Set in the distant future, a little like FARSCAPE where three young cadets accidently get shot towards the centre of the galaxy and fall into a war against a civilisation with planet destroying capabilities. Some quite clever effects though it was aimed at adolescents.

            Some great old show there that deserve a look for remaking.

              Two others I had almost forgotten were;

              WILD WILD WEST: Great Western semi SciFi about two secret agents in the old west who use advanced equipment to solve national threats. Great fun show. The movie version was disappointing, but the concept was clever.

              SEARCH (aka PROBE); Another of the secret agent type series, this one made in the 70s and using high tech implants allowing head office to see and hear all that the agent sees and hears and pass on secretly and immediately information as needed. Short lived 90s series FORTUNE HUNTER used the theme but cut short by actors dispute despite popularity. Both had sophisticated bad guys some over the top like the UNCLE stories. Semi-scifi

                Blake's 7 remake seems dead. A space 1999 reimagining was in development for the last 3 years (named space 2099) but it seems also dead

                  I don't know if the Blake's 7 remake is quite dead yet. But it does seem to be stuck in development hell. At the moment Georgeville seem to be concentrating on Sense8, while Blake's 7 gathers dust.

                  GVTV has an extensive slate of projects that are currently in various stages of development and production, including:

                  Blake's 7

                  An adaptation of the ‘70s British Cult Classic, written by Joe Pokaski (Heroes, CSI). Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, Zorro Franchise, Last Resort) will direct the pilot episode and will serve as an Executive Producer on the series.
                  I'm rather dubious about the whole thing to be honest. I don't know if they are capable of doing the original justice. For starters, they had some concept art for the Liberator which I detested, and another of London under the Federation which I thought was only just about passable (no domes?).
