View Full Version : The Flash\Barry Allen discussion thread (spoilerish potential)

Spimman
December 9th, 2013, 10:54 AM
So Barry Allen (pre-Flash) is now on Arrow. As of right now I don't know where his character is going, but I presume he lost his job in and he now knows Oliver's secret identity so maybe he'll join the team. I'm wondering if he'll eventually become The Flash on the show and become a recurring character to some extent or if The CW is levering this to start a spin-off with some crossover potential. I've always like The Flash as I enjoy his humor, rarely serious beta male style of superhero compared to your more typical serious, tough guy, alpha male superhero (Green Arrow, Batman, Superman...)

We'll see I guess.

(Use spoilers for un-aired verified future events on Arrow, not speculation or historical information about The Flash)

Little searching found some actual information. Spoilerish info below, no major reveals.

There has been a change in the CWs plans for The Flash. Originally, the character, played by Grant Gustin, was supposed to appear in three episodes of Arrow this season No. 8, No. 9 and No. 20, the last one serving as a backdoor pilot directed by David Nutter. Episodes 8 and 9, in which the superhero is introduced only as his alter ego Barry Allen, have already been shot. But now the CW has opted to film a traditional stand-alone Flash pilot instead of doing a backdoor pilot...

Agreed and I agree with Spimman's suggestion of having him on the show longer. I really can't tell if the actor is leading man material. But we'll see.

I would have liked to see more of him first on Arrow as well. But I have faith in their plans for this Flash show. I really want it to succeed like Arrow has.

I agree, it could be a really awesome show. The CW has a niche market and seems to be doing well in it. I do hope that the two separate shows have somewhat regular cross-overs since they exist within the same universe.

You are correct, although we saw the storm and chemical accident that causes it. I don't guess we'll see that until the pilot, which will now be independent of Arrow so they'll likely redo the entire thing from the beginning with a few changes.

Watched the leaked pilot of Flash, it was pretty good. Guy playing Barry sells it well enough. The end bit was wacky though because of potential implications despite slight villain changes.

They're not related, Barry was sort of taken in as a kid by the detective guy. But yeah, it is a bit of a weird dynamic. Think the new Fantastic 4 movie has something similar going on but without a buddng relationship.

They don't have to be related for it to be incest. Incest is defined generally as relations between people that are related either biologically or through social conventions that adds someone to the family structure like an adopted sister/brother, a step-mom, mother-in-law, cousin, etc.

Generally, that is all considered incest, though depending on the state in the US, some are considered illegal and others are legal.

Is there any indication on what his top speed will be in the show?

In the comics Barry is able to travel even faster than the speed of light, but at most times he only travels no more mach 10

garhkal

Never knew that. I thought he couldn't go much faster than the speed of sound.

Master Chief Jack O Niell

In the last epsiode they mentioned at the end that he was able to get a big jump in speed which may be mach 2 or 3 they are aiming for this season. If the show does aim for at least light speed they will probably do it at the series finale like when Clark finally became superman at the end of the series finale for smallville

The writers are already starting to mess up some aspects of the show.

On last night's episode it was said that Oliver's bow can travel about 300 feet per second or 204 mph, and that the flash can travel 3x that so about 612 mph, but in previous episodes he has gone close to 900 mph. They should have put "over 4x faster" instead of "about 3x faster".

garhkal
December 3rd, 2014, 02:14 PM
On average he goes at around 600 mph. In extremis he has been shown to go faster yes.. But i think they were figuring on averages..

For me, the first part was ok, but not 'great'.

Why does wells need barry to go back to his time line? Not only was he from the future where the quality of education would dwarf anything today, but he is also a speedster so he should be able to think very fast. Couldn't he develop a device to travel back like how Wally West made the Cosmic Motocyle.

I think it has more to do with his powers than technology/knowledge. In one of the Pied Piper episodes, he started running, then his powers failed and he started convulsing on the floor. He was also very interested in how Blackout took away Flash's powers early in the season. Looks like they're going away from the Cosmic Treadmill since Barry didn't need it to time travel in this week's episode.

They are treating the movie and TV universes as separate entities that at least nominally co-exist. DC does a lot of Multiverse stuff in the comic books, so it's not too surprising they would with the movies as well.

Of course, then they turn around and say Arrow can't use Deadshot any more because they're afraid people will confuse him with the Will Smith version in the Suicide Squad movie somehow.

That's not the only way to do it. I think it would have been just fine to keep them separate, but if they're separate, have them be completely separate and don't put restrictions on the shows because of the movies.

But the Movies and TV shows are separate universes, or do you mean for green lantern to appear in flash? because Hal Jordon is the green lantern and I was wondering if his gonna appear in season 2 of the flash, I think green lantern and the flash team up quite abit in the comics (I mean together, in separate adventures from the Justice League) so its possible, also im hoping for Diggle to be a green lantern (john Jones)

CBS is a part owner of CW (with Warner Brothers). It's possible, but it would almost have to be a parallel universe thing because Superman would have had to come up in Arrow or Flash if he was active in that reality.

It wouldn't however be Tom Welling's Clark Kent, because Smallville is in different universe again (Justin Heartily plays Oliver Queen), and I doubt they would get Henry Cavil to appear in the ARROWVERSE lol

and I heard a rumour for The Flash s2, there doing Earth 1 & Earth 2 or something lol so there's another universe

LOVED IT.. Especially the little bit at the end with Oli in that coffee place.
Though i couldn't put my finger on it, the voice of 'zoom' sounds very familiar.. Anyone know who he is?

Yup.. Kurn in three episodes of TNG and again in DS9. Along with the Xfiles.
He was also the lead Hirogan in Voyager, Lord Hikon in Series 9 and 10 of SG1 (the sodan leader).

I keep thinking Patty is too good to be true. She shares Barry's interests, makes a great partner for Joe, everyone likes her, she is very capable. For some reason this leaves me with a cringe for something that must go wrong pretty soon.

Interesting they are doing a crossover I thought they wanted to wait a year before they did one. Also if they are in the same universe then that means they pretty much just said Superman is in their universe but they can't mention him or Batman in Flash and Arrow.

garhkal
February 4th, 2016, 11:08 AM
They are not. Flash somehow 'ports over to Kara's reality/universe..

Achiles
February 4th, 2016, 03:52 PM
That's disappointing then I hope they at least don't screw up the Flash/Barry too bad, Supergirl is a little meh though not as bad as I thought it would be.

Well, Hartley Sawyer is gone now :(

https://www.cbr.com/flash-hartley-sawyer-fired-racist-misogynistic-tweets/

I can't help but think of James Gunn, he was fired only to be brought back. If Hartley truly has changed (from the 2011-2014 tweets) and the cast and crew stick by him, then they should REALLY consider bringing him back.

I just saw another article on that. I don't know how I'd feel about him returning. I mean, the tweets were from a while ago and people do change, but a lot of people also just say they've changed even though they really haven't. I mean, he's 35 yrs old now (just a bit younger than me) , he wasn't a child or teen when he said those things, he was a grown man and should have known better. A lot of the things that he been quoted as saying were pretty vile and so not funny, you'd have to be a pretty big jerk to think it was funny.

You are absolutely correct. I do not and cannot know what is in his heart or what his actions today are.

But I can say that my relationship with my wife has brought up things I thought were jokes (nothing like Hartley or James Gunn's tweets) as well as my lack of perspective on many issues. I have grown since I meet her almost 10 years ago (October 2010). And I just turned 36 in March.

A lot can happen in that amount of time, however, that does not mean Hartley has grown out of the mindset that thought those were appropriate comments or jokes to make.

The show will last without him and with Ralph's ability to change appearance, they could recast him or just write him out.

For season 6 (2019-2020):

Ralph's story/arc has been separate from the main narrative. So it wouldn't disrupt anything.

But that is why I said, if the cast and crew stand by him, like the Guardians of the Galaxy did for James Gunn. If cast and crew of The Flash are interviewed and WB cannot find any reports of Hartley acting like his past self. Then I think it would be reasonable for them to reinstate him,

Again, that is only if he gets the internal support. Unlike James Gunn, he does not have the same kind of platform or may not have the witnesses that can step up and testify they have seen him grow out of that negative mindset.

It's not my call to make. I just know I believe in second chances and I know that may not sound like much coming from a white guy.

But I grew up as a child of an addict, a brother of two addicts, and dealing with other family members with different addictions. I had to give them second, third, and fourth chances, because i love them and I do believe people can change.

Whether Hartley should be rehired, is outside my knowledge or responsibility. And who knows, maybe behind the scenes, for other or similar things, they may have already given him second chances and this was the last straw. I will never truly know.

Yeah, I understand what you mean, people do change, but since we don't know him personally we don't really know if he's changed or not. With family or someone close to you can see if they've grown as a person or not a lot if the time, and even then sometimes it's just for a little bit or just for long enough to get what they want from you. I've had people like that in my life, where they've claimed that they'd changed, made a show of being "changed" for a bit and then reverted back to their old self.

So far I haven't noticed anyone rushing to his defense, I may have missed it though.

I agree with what you put in spoiler tags. (sorry, I'm on my phone and sometimes it's easier not to reply with quote and your post is right above mine, so I figured I'd just reply like this. Typing out spoiler tags is also a bit annoying on my phone.)

Maybe they're just waiting for things to die down (not just news of his firing but all the protests and stuff) to defend him, but I dont know. Usually by now there should have been a least one cast or crew member commenting on what a great person he really is and how they've never heard him make any inappropriate jokes or something along those lines.
