Excellent episode!

Loved the devious side to the E-Rep we get to see here, plus Irisa's backstory gets interesting. Prosthetics and makeup or good casting, but young Irisa looked very much like her older self.

People should remember to check this: http://www.defiance.com/en/series/photos after episodes to get some more details.

Not bad. It was nice to get a little more back story for one of the characters finally. It will be interesting to see where they go with Irisa's character after this and what it is building up to. Also love the chemistry between Nolan and Amanda. Looks like trouble ahead for the mayor. Maybe that Irathient chick will go bounty hunter with her new chatty passenger, who I hope we see again. I also liked the fact that she showed honor in her actions, although I had feeling she would come back. You could just tell it would happen.

This episode just didn't work as well for me. I didn't find any real surprises.

1.) Not that surprising that the E-rep (or one of her party) were going to be up to no good. And it wasn't too surprising that she had a lot more on the ball than she let on.

2.) Wasn't surprised that Rynn got away, although I was surprised that she took the surviving husband of the E-rep with her when she left. Maybe we'll see him again, or maybe not.

3.) More Irisa back story. I'd really like this to go away for a while. If it becomes to prominent a feature of the show it could overwhelm the writing.

4.) Perhaps my biggest surprise: why would anyone want to be up on top of that arch? Yes, it's high and good for radio transmission, but how the heck is that structure still up what with the terraforming events which occurred in the area?

5) Speaking the arch, when Alak is up there dedicating a song to Christie, the director gives the impression that they are actually able to make eye contact with one another (a similar interaction was suggested between Nolan and Irissa in the fight against the Volge).

I get that people wave to loved ones who can't possibly see them (ships leaving port etc), but this looks like "A" looks for "B" through a mail slot and waves, and "B" looks up sees "A" waving through this mail slot and returns the wave.

Yes, they're young, cute and in love, but are their eyes that good?

6.) I was reminded of the film "Hombre" (1967) for some of Nolan/Amanda scenes, and perhaps by certain episodes from shows like "Deep Space Nine" for Irisa's part of the story.

I'd probably give it only a C+ (maybe).

regards,
G.

Defiance must have the worst police department. The deputy gets distracted and abandons his duties so easily. I hope the criminals are taking advantage of that.

hehe. Stagecoach.

Darn, this show just can't seem to become compelling. I agree enough with the "mystical" Irisa.

When I judge this show I compare it to Firefly or old time western television series. Even if Firefly were not set in the future and they were just a band travelers like Wagon Train then Firefly would still be good tv. I can't say that very much about Defiance. Some of the characters are good some of the time but at times I want them off the screen as soon as possible.

Could the lovely and talented Julie Benz be more wrong for a role?

I was very surprised to see the actor who plays Datak was in a few things I remember. He was the Invisible Man in League of Extraordinary Gentleman andVincent Van Gogh in Doctor Who among other things.

I have tried to put my finger on whats bothering me. Perhaps its that the show seems to have been put together by committee.

Take away the special effects and the rubber masks and compare it to other shows and it seems pretty amateurish. Comparing it to the Stargates, Grant Bowler is not Jack Oneil or even Col. Sheppard. The deputy is not Lt. Ford. Nor is the Mayor an Elizabeth Weir or a George Hammond. And yet each actors performance in Defiance is at least as good as the actors in the Stargates(except for maybe RDA). The problem has to be the characters they play and the stories the characters play in.

The way I would have done the series is to have the Defiant Few become the enemies of both sides. So they take an Ark. The Arks would have had FTL drives and have various ecosystems corresponding to each races preferred environment. They couldn't wake up the sleepers due to lack of space. Each community would have to get along with the others, with some comingling of the species. The Volge would be a threat to them all. Holding the communities together while searching for habitable planets would have been the purpose of the series. They could have even occasionally met other space faring races.

Please don't try to compare shows in an effort to like them, look at them on their own and don't base anything on other shows. That is how shows die, people expect something else and are upset when its not.

not comparing Defiance to anything, but I am losing interest because there's not enough happening ON THE SCREEN. I don't want to participate in the sync program - that's not entertaining to me in the slightest. If I were captured by the mythos, I might be more inclined to explore further, but so far it is so "surface" oriented - no depth.
