    "Flash Forward" Finales

Do you like series finales that flash forward to show what happens to everyone? I like this concept as it can provide a lot of closure. Granted, you won't see this in a show where a movie or spinoff show is a likely possibility.

SG-1's finale featured the team and General Landry trapped in a time dialation field. After fifty years, Carter found a solution, and Teal'c stayed old to pass the solution to a younger Carter. It wasn't a flash forward, but rather a glimpse at what could have been. That said, I thought this was a great way to end the series. The Asgard's role in the finale should have been dealt with in another episode, but alas... the cancellation meant a last-minute finale.

Star Trek: The Next Generation, Voyager, and Enterprise all gave us glimpses into the future. TNG's "All Good Things..." was a glimpse at one possible future, similar to SG-1's "Unending." However, Picard's knowledge of that future effectively nullified it as demonstrated by the movies, DS9, and VOY. Interestingly, some things did turn out the same. For example; DS9's finale featured Worf becoming an Ambassador to his home world (politics), Data gained emotions, and Riker was eventually promoted to Captain. VOY's "Endgame" basically starts off in the future and features Admiral Janeway changing the past, unable to deal with a number of tragedies that would begin soon after the events of the show's present time. Interestingly, Janeway was still promoted to Admiral. Finally, we come to ENT's "These Are the Voyages..." This one was poorly handled. Disregarding the TNG framing, why set the episode six years later if the only changes are cosmetic and Trip and T'Pol breaking up? That's it, that's all that changed. It might as well been a few months after the previous episode. Yes, there's the whole "founding of the Federation" angle, but... there should have been more than that to set it six years later. Promotions, transfers, spouses, scars, a weathered ship, something!

One more I can think of is Terminator: TSCC's "Born to Run." It's not a flash forward per say, but the final scene does jump some twenty years into the future, nullifying John Connor's role in the resistance. It raises a lot of questions. The biggest one is, how does the resistance exist at all if John Connor was removed from the equation? It would be interesting if Derek Reese was in charge in this new future.
