They only need to block stars that Destiny needs and only those within a certain distance of the line of stargates through the galaxy as Destiny can only make it so far.

They're not. The types of stars Destiny can use to recharge is limited. Not just any star will do. Also, the recharge star has to be on the course charted by the seedships (this condition is how they probably chart courses to begin with). The drones have probably tapped into the subspace link between the gates and Destiny, giving the command ships a general fix on where Destiny is heading. Thus, I don't think they need to cover millions of stars. The drones already have a good fix on the limited number Destiny is actually able to use.

they block each star in range of Destiny for recharge.

Hey, would the drones go after a planet with no technology? The fact that the drone just immediately shot at the can Greer threw makes me wonder if it just goes after ANYTHING or technology stuff specifically. What if the drones came across a super non-advanced society? The sentient dinosaur things from "The Hunt", for example. Would the drones take them out?

Destiny has no knowledge of the stars that were not mapped out by the seed ships, that's why it has to stick close to the seeded stargates.

The drone only shot at the can Greer threw because it knew there was someone in the area. The drones only track technology, but that doesn't mean they won't defend themselves.

I know I answered this question, buty for some reason it wasn't posted.

The drones go after technology specifically. Scott's and Greer's radios were live, but not transmitting. The drone knew they were there, just not exactly where. Thus when Greer threw the can, the drone fired at the detected sound in that area expecting that it would be destroying the technology. Any lives lost in the process of technology destruction is simply collateral damage. As seen on the colony world, once the tech is gone, the drones don't care about people. At least for now.

the drones hardly have to block EVERY star. Destiny can't travel THAT far.

the question we should be asking is how did the drones figure out that Destiny recharges in stars.

They (the drones) observed Destiny and the seed ship in Resurgence (210) dip into the star and recharge. It's also possible that the drones have encountered the seed ships before elsewhere.

As discussed on another post, if the Drones are actually what is known as a Von Neuman Machine, that is that the command ship can create a new one very rapidly youll have the required numbers to not only block off every star, but blockade the star itself. Remember itll be no good just having one command ship per star if it finds itself out of position Destiny would be able to slip through and considering the size of space possibly not even know that the blockade is up! each star would need dozens if not hundreds of command ships to blockade it!

The math behind it is called geometric growth. Lets say that

1 command ship that can creat one new per year

after 10 years you have 512 command ships

after 20 years you have half a million command ships

After 64 years you have 18,446,744,073,709,551,615 command ships which is more command ships then there are grains of rice in the world! so it would be hoped that they would have some kind of limit build in (each command ship can only create 2 others or something to slow down production before all the material in the universe is converted into command ships. )

and the drones that followed were destroyed
