The reason Spacegates have only 8 chevrons

I was just thinking about why the spacegates have only 8 chevrons instead of 9. My possible explanation is that a black hole could power a 9-chevron dial-in to Destiny. The Ancients did not want anyone to be able to dial Destiny from space just by pressing the buttons and going through with ease. That's probably not all, but that may have something to do with it. What do you think?

aye, maybe. though all they'd need to do would be - like ground-based gates - remove the control crystals. in fact, if these gates were viable for intergalactic travel, why haven't darts tried it already?

more likely, the CGI guys forgot about it (since models were probably used for ground gates) and it was too late to fix it when/if it was noticed.

Space gates have 9, as they are normal stargates just put into orbit above a planet. Unfortunately, from time to time, the CG artists will screw it up

my guess is a space gate wouldn't have enough power to dial destiny's gate.

maybe if you had a blackhole in the equation you might

or an alternative power source at the jumper end, or attached onto the gate itself

think the prison planet hadante in SG1 - they were able to use vines for power. as long as it's compatible, it can be chucked on there

Ground gates were usually computer generated. The models were too expensive to move around.

meh, i was thinking of desktop models to spin then imposed over the actual gate with a quick resize

in that case, they just didn't use their files consistently

I think the fact that people believe that merely placing a stargate near a blackhole will inevitably power it is HILARIOUS!

Isn't that what we've been shown, though?

No the way people are showing it as is that merely being near the blackhole will power the gate which is NOT the case, the blackhole in "A Matter of Time" was dilating the time on one side so it didnt shut down. The Ori however had a means of doing so that we do not know about.

Maybe by the time the Ancients went to Pegasus, they had given up on the Destiny project. They had nearly been wiped out by the plague, after all. And by that time they probably knew of ascension and realized they could accomplish the Destiny mission once they ascended.

Or like others have said it's just a GCI goof.

                              Perfecto!
