The hive shuddered as a barrage from the opposing faction hit them broadside, taking out at least two dart bay doors.

“Return fire,” he roared, closed his eyes and interfaced with the neural network of the semi-sentient intelligence of the ship. “Hyperspace window opening... Firing main engine!”

He could feel the acceleration despite the inertial dampeners, the thrust from the engines a surge through the material of the hive, the integrity of the hull in question. A risky step, but he had no choice.

“Commander, hull damage is extensive -”

“We have no time, Sub-commander, to regenerate,” he snarled, and opened his eyes to fix his gaze on the welcoming violet and blue window as it unfolded before them. “We have outstayed our welcome and cannot hope to compete against so many.”

“Losing atmosphere on two habitation decks, Commander,” the Technician to his left reported.

Barely acknowledging his officer, the Commander locked his fingers in place, demanding a manoeuvre from the hive that could prove their undoing. Gritting his teeth in concentration, under his expert guidance, the hive pitched as gracefully as she could away from a further deadly salvo headed their way, gathering speed despite leaking air.

“Hyperspace window four AU's and closing.” The Third rapped the words out, loud in the silence, as all concentrated on each vital task. “Three... two... one... ”

The Commander gave a low growl of triumph as the ship cleared the theatre, and entered safety. For long moments, he allowed the ship's systems to report to him, and he channelled the information to terminals, sending details of critical repairs to each station and the Chief Engineer. The organic web of the internal network surged, showing him spots where links failed, what systems needed further attention, and his consciousness sped along the fibrous connections, filtering, selecting, changing... stimulating growth.

Satisfied they progressed steadily, if not well, he released the controls, and gestured imperiously to a sub, who answered to the summons smoothly. Stepping from the dais, the Commander locked eyes with the underling, and then headed towards the conference room. His silent command brought his Second and Third hot on his heels.

They filed in silence out of the bridge and he swept past the doors without noticing the brothers that hurried past, or the drones that the Handlers moved along and out of his way. This intolerable situation could not be allowed to continue, and his temper shortened with each step he took. Too many had died, too many brothers lost in the internecine war, and now there was a new and deadly enemy they knew nothing about.

Before him the entrance to the conference room loomed, shrouded in the dimmed light of the hive, as it sought to minimise all energy expenditure. Coming to a halt, he ran his palm across the door entry panel, and they opened with an organic rattle before him. Sweeping into the room beyond, he turned on his heel as soon as they shut, and faced his officers.

“We must contact Atlantis.”

For a moment the two Wraith stared at their Commander in disbelieve, and then looked at each other, shock clearly written on their faces.

“Why would we wish to consort with food, Commander?” The Second's hot yellow gaze fixed on his superior, full of suspicion, revulsion. “They brought our former leader nothing save problems, and the destruction of at least one hive.”

“And countless Wraith... ” The Third snarled, not bothered that he openly displayed anger. “His alliance -” the word was spat out as if it fouled his mouth - “and the research he began with them proved worthless.”

This threat to his authority would not be permitted, and the Commander uttered a low growl, capturing the violence threatening between them and exorcised it as a disdainful bark of laughter. “We have no Queen and without his leadership, it is highly unlikely we will maintain the Alliance.” He gestured towards the small screen atop one of the terminals in the room, and moved to it, running his fingers across the membranous surface. “Look.”

He gestured at the monitor, at the tumbling glyphs falling in accusation. “Without the assistance of these humans, we will fail, as we have lost two more hives to other factions, and the inroads these new, unknown aliens have made on our defences can no longer be tolerated.”

The two other Wraith glanced swiftly at each other, and the Second tilted his head, reptilian eyes narrow slits as he swiftly read the evidence. The damning information could hardly be clearer, nor could that their losses were unendurable. But still...

“I understand your reluctance to place what remains of our Alliance in direct contact with the Lanteans, but they may know who it is we match ourselves against and what their capabilities are.”

“They are treacherous,” the Third snapped, hostile still despite the proof before his eyes. “They cannot be trusted, and if we place ourselves at their mercy we are more likely to be destroyed before we reach orbit.”

“Then we send an emissary,” the Commander hissed, and bared his sharp teeth as he spoke.

“Who?” the Third demanded, earning another hard stare from his Commander.

“Someone they have had dealings with before,” the Commander said, and in the half-light, three sickle tattoos showed under his right eye, stark against his skin. “Me.”

“Unacceptable!” thundered the Second, and braced himself as the mental grip of his superior tightened about his thoughts. “Your leadership is key without the Ancient One, as you alone carry the banner he once swore to uphold.”

“That cannot be helped,” the Commander growled, and narrowed his eyes as sweat beaded his officer’s brow, pain creasing his brow. “Now we have need of assistance, and as we can offer aid to the Lanteans that will assist them in their battle -”

“How might we aid these Lanteans?” the Third interrupted, willing to press his point and risk his Commander’s ire despite the clear agony that showed on his brother’s face. “What is it we have that we could offer?”

“Much.”

Kenny released the Second, and that one took a rasping breath as the pain ceased, hanging his silver head for a moment. He gestured briefly at the larger monitor set against the hull of the hive, and brought up a likeness of a Queen they all recognised. She stared out of the screen, raven-haired, and golden eyed, proud, her demeanour belonging to one whose lineage could not be doubted.

“To bring this Queen to us once more -” Kenny said, and for a moment his taloned finger touched the face of Teyla - “we must take to Atlantis the co-ordinates for a source of power.”

“Zero-point-modules...” the Third said, a second faster than his fellow officer, whose green-gold eyes had widened. Kenny's third-in-command let out a low rumble, and met his Commander's eyes. “This could prove dangerous, and we may not succeed in persuading them to allow her to be a figurehead.”

Swift on his heels, the Second said, “The Old One left you with this knowledge, only to be put to use wisely. I cannot suppose this was what he had in mind.” He scrutinised the Queen whose image stared back at him with haughty disdain. “As for this one rejoining us...” White hair drifted across his leather armour as his head shook from side to side. “It was a ruse many believed, Commander, but I do not think they would do so again.”

Huffing a sigh, Kenny shrugged, willing now to be patient, as his officers attention had been fixed on a possible answer to their dilemma. For him, the solution, though no solution at all, was simple. Only with the Lanteans could they hope to maintain their Alliance, and for that they had to offer something in return, which could only be a ZPM. The decision he'd reached, with a great deal of difficulty, sat like lead in his guts, but he saw no choice but to take the road laid out before him. Loath to approach Atlantis with no bargaining chip, Kenny knew asking for Teyla to take up the challenge of Primary again might be a step too far for the humans to swallow, but he had to try. And he would not give up the ZPM's location without something in return for that information, and offering his crew as subjects for experimentation would never happen.

Not as long as he was Commander of the fleet and Alliance, depleted though it now was.

A growl rumbled through his frame, and he turned back towards his officers, definite about his decision. “This is not open for discussion. I will take a dart to Atlantis when we are within range.”

“But if they will not see you, Commander?” his Second insisted.

Kenny shrugged, and looked to the distance, suddenly weary. “Then we will have lost nothing, and you will make another attempt to contact the humans of Atlantis.”

The two officers exchanged looks, and then, together, they gave a slight bow. Kenny could see they were not happy, that this step tasted rank.

“It will be done,” the Second acquiesced.

“I will prepare a dart and you will begin broadcasting this message as soon as we are within distance.” His fingers sped across the terminal, bringing up the data he wanted transmitted, and he made a few rapid adjustments to the algorithms. It would not do if they could not recognise them for what they were. Satisfied, Kenny began to head towards the exit, his leather coat skirts flurrying around his ankles, and halted, looking back over his shoulder. “Do not come within range of Atlantis until I signal you. One less hive in the Alliance is not my aim.”

“Yes, Commander,” they replied.

Sweeping out into the hall beyond, Kenny made for the dart bay, his booted feet echoing as they hit the floor, and he considered his choices again. None of them good, he had made a decision based on worst case scenario; it didn't mean he had to like it.

Two further jumps would bring him close enough to their would be ally, and oft-time Nemesis, and then the message to Sheppard would go out.

((OOC. We may begin:D and Welcome to Todd's new home. All Wraithy posts may commence, but until Todd is actaully here with you, I would suggest a little background discussion amongst your fellow Wraith on how you feel about aligning with Atlantis once again)) :D

While telepathically keeping up with supervising so many projects, he could not help but to pay attention to the conversation his commanding officers were holding about approaching the Lanteans. The plan was risky and he knew from past dealings with these humans that each side always felt that things didn’t go according to plan.

After the conversation ended and the Commander passed though the dart bay, Bullseye lowered his eyes in deference. His prior Commander entrusted this Wraith to carry on his legacy. He hoped that the Lanteans would view this one they called ‘Kenny’ in the same diplomatic way as the one they called ‘Todd’ and that a favorable deal could be reached.

Astor was doing his routine security checks when the fighting had started. The sound of the hive being attacked had brought back memories for him. He barely escaped with his life before his former hive ship had been completely destroyed.

He dropped his security work to see if he could help with what was going on but the fighting had stopped when he stepped out into the halls. Is it over? He could telepathically see the other wraith beginning repairs on damaged areas of the hive ship. He had decided to head back to where he was before when he suddenly could telepathically hear the faint voices of the commanders. He concentrated on listening to their voices and could hear them talk about making an alliance with Atlantis.

They want help from Atlantis? The last humans he had seen, not including the worshippers, had snuck onto his hive with a dart. He was able to hear the conversation between one of the male humans and his former queen. The male human had claimed that he had a partnership with the other hive queen that was in the other hive ship outside theirs and that was how he had obtained the dart. It wasn't long after that his former hive was destroyed.

He picked up where he left off with his security work hoping that the commanders knew what they were doing.

{Kenny}

Hopping smoothly into his dart, Kenny felt the chair wrap itself around the contours of his frame, and as soon as he'd settled the canopy closed above him. As the controls came alive, he brought the small craft to bear on the opening that spread like a canker on the wounded hive. The damage was extensive and he could not help the hiss of dismay that passed his lips when the nose of the dart came level. It would take much to repair her, and he gritted his teeth against the remembered pain of the ship.

Moving his craft cleanly through the damage, Kenny headed out into vacuum, just as his voice boomed through the ship, the message sent unerringly to Atlantis.

"Do not fire! I repeat. Do. Not. Fire. This is the Second of the one you held captive. I repeat, this is the Second of the one you held captive. I come on a matter of urgency, and with beneficial information."

Reese pounded along the companionway, sub-commanders, handlers and drones alike stepping aside and bowing their heads, not wishing to meet her eyes. She rounded he corner and found the one known as 'Bullseye', her own remaining five of the original twelve drones close on her heels, her katana was already in her hands as she phased up to him, a blur of motion. The tip of he blade was at his chin. "Where is my father Bullseye, I sense him far away....there was a meeting why was I not called."

She pressed the tip a little further. "Answer me...now. Where is he?" Her voice was not loud, she could have sent her message telepathically, but she enjoyed the intimidation speking gave her. {Rhys}

The Wraith known as Rhys was overseeing the repair of damaged data and electric circuits when he pondered over the commander's decision to contact Atlantis. It was certainly not an action he would have taken, but he understood they were out of options.

He suppressed a growl at the thought of facing the humans of Atlantis – the last time he had met them it had nearly been his death.

There appeared to be trouble brewing just outside the room, his senses picked up the telepathic signs of distress of a fellow Wraith. Leaving the technicians alone he decided to investigate and opened the door - to find the strange Wraith-haired human female threatening one of his brothers.

Unsure whether to intervene Rhys remained standing in the doorway, wanting to find out what this was all about before he took any actions.

{Bullseye}

Concentrating on his work had been getting easier as his severely injured brothers throughout the hive received the Gift of Life; their echoing thoughts of pain subsiding one by one. At the same time, more and more nodes reappeared on the telepathic network - stars flaring to life again in the night sky that could truly be reached.

Reeses’s sudden interruption brought him out of the immersion of his high-priority work. Anger ignited inside of him and it flashed across his narrowed eyes, but he kept himself under control. He saw her current behavior as being as irrational as when that Runner had shot up the Daedalus engineering room, risking damage to life-supporting ship functions and the lives of everyone on board. This waste of time was keeping him from vital hiveship repairs and, after that, growing and repairing more weapons and spare parts.

Calmly and evenly, he addressed the Commander’s Child. “You are endangering our hive by interrupting vital repairs. I suggest you take your inquiry to the Second or Third.”

The sound of the other wraith in the telepathic network was beginning to calm down and the noise in Astor 's head was returning to normal. As he was continuing his routine security checks he could suddenly sense a different kind of distress than the ones he was hearing before. He could see the location of the crew members he was sensing.

He put down his work once again and ordered a few of the drones to accompany him to see what was happening. Astor and his drones came to a stop when they reached the distressed crew member also known as 'Bullseye' with a katana to his chin held by the commander's daughter. The drones held their stunners in the ready position but Astor telepathically ordered them to hold their fire. He then turned his attention to the commander's daughter.

Reese sensed Astor's approach before he spoke, in a heart beat she sheathed the weapon and took her attention away from Bullseye. She sent to him though before moving. ~Have my dart prepared...as soon as you may.~ She lowered the intensity of her mood, knowing that she would only create more friction if she did not. ~Forgive my temper, I..I have great toh toward you~ Bowing her head Reese moved over to stand beisde Astor.

With every Wraith there was a differing pesonality and each was approached in a different way, with Astor she used subtle, an almost ooman warm stance on her behalf. She curled a finger around his chin, stroking his goatee with her long laquered nails, they were blue today. ~Astor my sweet, how pleasant it is you care to be concerned about me. Father should hear of this.~ She phased around him a blur of blackness. Now in speech she spoke softly. "I asked this one, where my father was, I did but sense him here but now he is far away. I would speak with him, yet...yet I fear I may incur his wrath should he be on..how do the Lantean's say...'business'." She moved again and stood eye to eye with him. "I would simply like to know where he is going and why was I not informed of this 'meeting' earlier? Would you be so kind as to tell me, or should I find other less direct methods of finding out?" Her words were like honey over hot rocks...poisonous honey.

Bullseye raised a brow ridge at witnessing Reese's swift and unpredictable mood changes and was unsure what she meant by preparing her dart. A masked warrior could do that much, unless she meant repairs. If the dart was in need of repairs, he wasn't about to enter into hive politics or overstep the Chief Engineer by making the decision to bump her repair order up in the queue.

Once she had finished with Rhys she returned her attention to Astor, he was hard to fathom at times. Astor could sense a bit of sadness in her and he noticed the few tears she shed. He also wasn't sure of how to react to her placing her hand on his shoulder so he gave her one of his rare smiles before speaking telepathically.

He couldn't go back on his word and tell her what he had heard her father and commanders talk about. But perhaps could give her his opinion he thought.

{Second} - {Third}

Growling softly at the mental imagery sent to him via the Hive's Chief of Security, the Second wondered, again, about the human female his Commander indulged so greatly. Noted for her hot temper, and mood swings, her arrogance was unmatched, but he found her mind chaotic, undisciplined, too eager to challenge the status quo. A situation that flared too frequently of late.

~I must oversee the Commander's foundling~ he snapped, irritated. ~Her inability for patience has once more seen her in conflict with *Astor*~

The Third grunted, and slipped smoothly up to the dais to take the Second's place at the comm. ~Perhaps if we send her on her way in a dart, other humans will not look so kindly on her... ~

Second chuckled, but shook his head, regret on his face for a brief moment. ~For whatever reason, that rebellious infant has his affection, no matter how disruptive she is to the others, or how many fall beneath her spell ~ A number of the faced-males, subs with youth and energy, pined for her exotic beauty, transfixed by golden eyes and silky white hair, which he could not but disapprove, and which the Commander found amusing. ~I will head to the lower decks, as the Engineer's work is being disrupted ~

{Reese}

Cocking her head around, her white mane flaring out like a silken web, Reese nodded to the ship's Intelligence Officer, her eyes widening into golden orbs. ~That is not of your concern Rhys, my behaviour is a given, take it or leave it. You have a report from my incursion to the Genii, have you even read it yet? Do you have any indication as to who these Alien's are I suspect they are in collusion with? When you tell me your answer then I will serve you again, but until then take your place and leave the ships repairs to the engineers, it is of neither yours or my affair~ She snapped her mind shut, giving him the impression she would see him soon.

Rhys suppressed the urge to growl at this short-sighted accusation. Instead he remained calm as he answered, ~With all due respect, you may misjudge the situation. I was called here to help repairing important data circuits, crucial for our computer network that also controls the life support system, so, yes, ship repairs are indeed my business right now. As you so rightly pointed out, I am the Intelligence officer, therefore I offer my in-depth knowledge of computer systems to help. So, unless you have a broader picture of this and know of things outside my horizon, I recommend you trust my judgement as to where I belong at any given time. I will read your report as soon as life support is stable and my service is no longer required here. ~

The mention of the unknown aliens made him nervous, it was very fearsome that they still hadn't gleaned solid intel on the strange race.

{Chief Engineer}

The Chief Engineer readily accepted the help of Reese’s masked warriors to make up for time lost from the dart bay incident and sent his telepathic approval. The muscle power of the drones was put to immediate use to move large, heavy pieces of wall to be spliced back together and encouraged to heal – a strenuous task for a ship also trying to heal radiation damage from the hyperspace jump.

{Bullseye}

Having successfully fitted both replacement doors in the dart bay, Bullseye tested their functionality discovered that one of the door mechanisms responsible for receiving telepathic commands for opening and closing the door needed to be replaced. A bit like a surgical procedure to enter into the hive wall and reconnect the new mechanism to the living power cords that ran inside, it was an opportune time for mentoring and enforcing discipline. He summoned a junior technician on his right, who was still so young that his age, including hibernation, had only recently reached the triple digit range. Bullseye telepathically coached him, teaching the younger Wraith how to concentrate on the repairs, and not on Reese.

Astor could sense a bit of sadness in her and he noticed the few tears she shed. He found tears a little strange even though he saw countless tears from some of the humans they held prisioner in the past. He also wasn't sure of how to react to her placing her hand on his shoulder so he gave her one of his rare smiles before speaking telepathically.

~I understand your anger and impatience. I imagine it isn't easy to be in your position.~

He couldn't go back on his word and tell her what he had heard her father and commanders talk about. But perhaps could give her his opinion he thought.

~I do suspect that your father has gone to meet with another party but with who I am not sure. If he were to go see the Lanteans I believe it would be foolish especially while they do hold the one...but that is also not in my place to tell him what I think. We must obey and support his actions and decisions even if we disagree with it.~

{Reese}

She wiped the corner of her eyes, Reese had realised her mistake and covered quickly for it. "Curse these frailties of my lineage, dust seems to affect my eyes badly at times." A lie but a good one, she smiled sheepishly. I imagined something like this to happen with the One being absent so long. I will speak of it no more then. By your leave I will withdraw and find something with which to fill my role aboard the hive for the time being.~ She bowed her head took a backward step, then turned.

Coming off the transporter pad, the Second quickened his pace, heading towards the position of the Security Chief and Reese. If she had caused more disruption... His mouth-hand wept, enzyme creeping the length of his fingers, and he curled them together to hide its gaping maw. Her raw, nervous energy washed over through the normally cool waters of thought, making eddies in the stream. But as he drew closer, he could sense that the ripples had begun to calm, and he gave a soft growl of approval.

Perhaps the infant would become more than a weapon - and that soon, he hoped.

~Reese ~ he barked, as he came close, mentally acknowledging his officers. ~You will come with me. In your father's absence there are tasks that he wished you to undertake ~

As the woman reluctantly came away from the bulkhead, he moved to stand next to *Bullseye* and surveyed the work the Engineers undertook. ~She heals slowly ~ he said, and sighed, the hurt the ship took a wound in his own mind. ~How long before she is able to access hyperspace again? ~

{Bullseye}

Bullseye respectfully acknowledged the Second’s approach and stood at attention. He grimly nodded when the Second remarked about the ship being slow to heal.

Within the telepathic network, the technicians shared their latest diagnostic reports with the engineers and they conferred on an answer to the Second’s question.

The hyperspace jump had not been long, which normally meant easily manageable radiation damage. However, as much power as possible was being diverted to the most severely battle-damaged areas of the hull, in order to accelerate growth and healing, and the newly-grown areas would need time to harden enough to resist the radiation of hyperspace travel. The Chief Engineer confirmed it would not be a mere few days of delay.

Bullseye did not waste the Second’s time with these details and delivered the concise answer that was asked of him. ~It will take a minimum of seven standard days.~

~Do not forget Reese that most Wraith view tears as a weakness even if they are caused by dust. If you were speaking to another Wraith on this hive he may have not taken so kindly to them.~

Astor turned and walked away while telepathically ordering his drones to return with him back to the security area. He found human emotions funny and curious at the same time especially from someone like Reese as she obviously wasn't like other humans he had encountered.

At the mention of the old days, Bullseye wondered just how much knowledge was lost to the Wraith before he ever came into existence, especially before the great Lantean-Wraith War. Being over 10,000 years old, *Todd* might have been able to confirm or deny the potential solution, but that one was not here.

The engineers telepathically conferred, considering that ultraviolet radiation just may speed the hardening of the biopolymer growth. However, the Chief Engineer was reluctant to expend much flight power or risk another hyperspace jump to find out.

Looping a bridge technician into the conversation, Bullseye obtained potentially favorable flight path information. The Chief Engineer declared it was worth a try.

After the Second turned back to Bullseye, he replied. ~It may be possible. The Bridge technician has located a sun for us, within a few standard hours of regular, non-hyperspace flying time.~

The Lantean beaming technology was an alluring aim. Reese apaprently knew how to bait him, yet he remained wary. Surely she had exaggerated her skills – she could not have gotten far with her reseach by now. He was certain he would still have to do the main coding work. What could a warrior like her know about such complex algorithms? He was ready to forget about her bad behaviour for this time, as long as she was of use to the hive.

Switching the small data tablet on and reading the report, a smile came to Rhys's lips. Selecting and converting worshippers was an entertaining pastime; he would take the first opportunity to head to the holding cells where the pre-selected humans were kept who be sorted into worshippers or food.

"We have recently taken back into our fold one thought lost to us, child, who has been gone for a full year." He didn't slow his stride as he walked, expecting the human to keep pace. Astor received Bullseye message and sent back his thanks to Bullseye for his gratitude but also to let him know that it wasn't necessary for it was part of Astor's duty to help keep things in order and make sure there was no disruption within the hive. Another of Astor's duties was to keep a daily count of the humans in the holding cells. It was repetitive and he wanted it get it done as soon as possible. He summoned one of the drones to accompany him in the count.

As they entered the holding cell area the smell of fear and anger became strong. Astor paused for a moment to take in the aroma before proceeding. He particulary enjoyed humans who smelled of defiance as it give them...a special kind of flavour.

Astor and his drone proceeded to stand in front of each cell counting each prisoner and making sure none had somehow escaped. He knew all too well that humans if determined would find a way to escape and wreck havoc on the hive ship. He would also find himself in trouble if one were to escape.

As he was made his way to each cell some of the humans would cower as he looked upon them and others would stare right at him. Some of them were even bold enough to try and have a few words with him but he ignored their talks. He didn't feel the need to associate himself with his potential food just yet incase they would be rejected as worshippers.

Perhaps I will help Rhys in determining who would make a good worshipper later. He thought to himself. He was finding himself thinking about feeding but then quickly ignored the thought. I am fine for now.

He wondered how many of this group would become worshippers and how many would become a delicious meal later.

Upon stepping out of the transporter, Rhys was mildly surprised to see Astor who seemed to be occupied with the daily assessment of the humans. Rhys nodded a greeting to Astor.
~May I ask for your help, Astor? I can see you have already examined the humans, are there individuals that caught your eye as potential worshippers? ~

Rhys swept a glance along the cells. Nothing spectacular to see. Just the ordinary mix of humans, some scared, some furiously glaring and some trying to get their attention. Checking back with the list he'd gotten from the Handler, he saw they needed a couple of every type: the talkative ones were often good spies but you had to make sure they didn't double-cross you – they were to be selected with great care. The warrior-type made good field operatives. Even the scared humans could have uses if treated appropriately.

{Lerl, Haeda, Reodalis: NPCs for conversion or meals as Rhys and Astor see fit!}

Haeda stared coldly at the two Wraith in front of her and tilted her head in a way that exposed the torn hole in her earlobe - the result of a vicious fight inside the jail she had escaped when one of the walls toppled during the cull. She had only been sent to prison because she had been framed. She was angry to have been snapped up by the culling beam after such a short period of freedom.

Lerl’s opportunistic eyes swept the room for yet another wallet to steal. With any luck, he would be chosen as a worshipper and could benefit from the job, but he immediately disapproved of this hive’s human resource management. There were no children and only a few women in the room. Few women meant not much jewelry, if any, for him to take.

Reodalis mopped the sweat off of his brow and stepped forward with a tremor that had nothing to do with fear. He had been a forcefully-converted field operative Wraith worshipper from a fallen hive and was looking for a new hive to serve… and get a fresh fix of Wraith enzyme.

As Reodalis was about to speak to Rhys and Astor, Haeda felt Lerl’s hands searching her pockets. She punched him—hard. The other captured humans backed away as fight ensued between the two.

Even the scared humans could have uses if treated appropriately.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v74/WeskersShadow/astornewseasons.jpg

Astor greeted Rhys as he entered the holding cell area. ~There a few I believe that may be good candidates. Of course you may find some more humans as good candidates since you are more experienced in determining who would make a valuable worshipper than I am.~

~This human female...~ Astor said looking towards Haeda. She stared right into his eyes with no fear. ~I notice she has scars on her body. Perhaps she could be of good use as some type of field opt worshipper. We don't seem to have many human females of that kind. It could be an advantage for us.~

Astor gazed over to the human Lerl. He noticed Lerl's eyes had been moving back and forth. ~This human is acting a little peculiar.~ Lerl didn't seem to take notice of Astor's stare as he was busy looking at the other prisioners in the cell with him.

Astor briefly glared over to the male human Reodalis. ~ I'm not sure about this one. He is weak.~ Reodalis quickly went up to Astor and Rhys holding onto the prision bars. Reodalis was trembling and sweating as he began to make his plea to Astor and Rhys hoping one of them would listen but he was interrupted as a fight broke out from behind him.

At that moment everyone's attention turned to Haeda and Lerl as they started to fight in the cell. Astor shook his head in disbelief and ordered more drones to come quickly as possible. A few of the drones had come in with their stunners raised at the two fighting humans. As Haeda had Lerl against the wall by the neck she looked over and noticed the drones who had their weapons pointed at them both.

'Release him.' Astor spoke with annoyance in his voice.

Haeda glared at the wraith in front of her. 'Heh. This man means nothing to me and if I kill him right now that would mean one less snack for you guys.' She said with a smirk as she tightened her hands around Lerl's neck. Astor looked over to Rhys with a wraithy smile.

~I think this one would definately make an excellent worshipper for you to convert.~

{Rhys} {Lerl, Haeda, Reodalis} - NPC

Rhys looked at the humans Astor had indicated more closely. The woman seemed rebellious and she glared at him as she noticed he was watching her. He replied to Astor, ~Indeed, this one is tough. She may be worth considering. That one however, ~ he glanced at Lerl, ~is a bit too nervous for my taste. Humans like him tend to annoy me. ~

As Reodalis tried to get the Wraiths' attention Rhys pointedly ignored him. ~This one reeks of reglect and sickness.~ Tasting the air with his sensitive nostrils, Rhys instantly recognised that smell - it was the stench of an addict. Someone had turned this human loose. Whether he had failed or whether his hive was lost would be to investigated. ~Maybe this one can give us information from his last hive.~

With interest Rhys observed the sudden commotion as the fight broke loose. As Haeda had Lerl in her deadly grip, Rhys smiled. ~I agree, the female will be… entertaining. ~

Slowly he opened the cell door and sauntered in, ignoring Reodalis once more who took the opportunity to step forward, stuttering pleas. The drones stood by at Rhys's telepathic order, ready to shoot, as he walked towards Haeda.

"Release him," Rhys repeated Astor's order.

"Won't. I wasn't joking, I will kill him," she snarled. "I'm not afraid of you."

Lerl gave a strangled noise, clinging to Haeda's arms, trying to loosen her grip. "Hey, you better listen to the friendly Wraith here, he only wants to calm us down. Don't you, Mr Wraith?" He gave a shifty smirk, aiming to be be both clever and trustworthy.

Rhys kept his gaze fixed on Haeda's eyes. Hazel, he noted. She simply stared back, unblinking as- too fast for a human eye to follow Rhys drew back his feeding hand and slammed it onto Lerl's chest. Haeda was thrown back by surprise and the force of the impact.

Giving a meek cry, Lerl crumpled to a withered husk and died. Dropping the dead body, Rhys focused on Haeda again.

"You are not in any position to deny us a 'snack'."

Haeda narrowed her eyes and spat on the floor before Rhys, then shutting her mouth tightly.

With a grin Rhys turned and left the cell, ordering the drones to bring Haeda and Reodalis into another cell, reserved for the selected few who became worshippers.

~Your estimation of this human was very good. You have an eye for worshipper material. Do you have any experience with conversion?~

Astor gave a wicked grin as he watched Rhys feed upon Lerl. In a few moments Lerl became nothing more than a withered corpse that quickly fell to the floor when Rhys was finished. Astor glanced over to a drone to give an order.

~Take its body for proper disposal.~

The drone quickly took Lerl's withered corpse for disposal as requested. The remaining drones kept their guard up while Rhys confronted the still defiant Haeda. She spat on the ground towards Rhys and Astor let out a low growl.

~...I can almost taste her defiance.~

His feeding hand went into a fist as he controlled the urge to feed. Rhys gave Astor his compliments on recommending Haeda. Astor nodded at him as a way of saying thanks and relaxed his feeding hand.

~ I've been exposed to all types of humans. After a while...you get a sense of what type of human is what. However I never had the experience of converting any. But I am willing to learn since it may come handy to me at another time.~

Astor ordered a few of the drones to keep guard in the holding area. Since he had completed everything he had to do now was a good time as any to learn the ways of converting stubborn humans.

The team of clevermen looked over the repairs in the hive’s hull. There was nothing more they could do for it, save waiting for the new growth to solidify. The Chief Engineer bade everyone to go about repairs and growth of darts next, in hopes that the darts could simultaneously benefit from the same treatment as the hull. He sent a status report via telepathy. ~All hull preparations for the solar destination are complete. Atmospheric pressure is stable and dart bay doors are functional. Commencing work on the darts.~

{Rhys} {Haeda, Reodalis}

Reodalis was excited and relieved to see he and the woman were picked to leave the cell. This could only mean one thing - since he was certain she had been selected to become a worshipper the same must apply to him. He would live! He would be able to prove he was worthy - and he would get the precious enzyme his whole body was craving for.

Haeda wasn't thrilled at all and she kicked the drone who tried to grab her arm. A small fight ensued as a second drone came to help his brother. Kicking and hitting, even biting like a feral cat, Haeda managed to keep the two drones at bay until a third one fired a well-aimed stun bolt into her chest.

Rhys observed the fight with a thin smile. ~ She is not a trained fighter but she is spirited, with a bit of training she will make a good field operative. ~ Turning to Astor, he explained, ~Converting humans takes some discipline and balance. You have to be patient, even if they defy you, and you have to know who to convert forcefully and who only needs a bit of persuading. If you drain their life you have to know when to stop, you have to feel how far you can push them to the edge.~

Eyeing her consideringly, the Wraith grunted, and shook his head. "I do not believe you would find this human to be to your... ah... particular taste, my dear. Or, indeed, he you." He continued for a few more steps, drawing to a halt before the transporter platform, and waited until she stood at his side. "What he requires is a more delicate touch."

The woman bridled, her yellow eyes narrow with annoyance, and he felt the touch of her mind against his own. Clamping down his barriers, the Second chuckled as she railed at him, and stepped onto the platform. "If you feel you are unable to execute such a task, it would be my pleasure to mention it to the Commander."

Reese slid her katana a handspan from it's sheath, she slid her finger along the atomically honed blade and let it slip back. {Astor} {Reodalis}

Astor listened attentively to Rhys' words as Reodalis stumbled into the holding cell made specifically for potential worshippers. Haeda's body was dumped onto the cell's floor by the drones. As Reodalis sat down on the floor he realised the dreadlocked wraith whose height must of been about 1 foot taller than his own was standing over him.

'Get up human.' Astor ordered.

Reodalis stood up without hesitation and looked up nervously at the wraith before him. He was watching the dreadlocked wraith, who's back was slightly bent over, looking at him up and down as if he were giving him an inspection of some sorts.

~ I remember this stench now. You are right. He is an addict and his stench is getting worse.~

Astor walked back over to Rhys and gave a low growl from his disgust at the addict. He ordered one of the drones to stand behind Reodalis. Reodalis was pushed over to the front of drone and was ordered by Astor to follow. They entered another room close by the holding cells. It was empty except for the single chamber in the wall meant for cocooning.

Reodalis quickly remembered the prodecure on worshipper converting in the former hive he once served and knew what to do. He nervously stepped into the small space without being asked and in a few minutes was cocooned inside it. His movement became restricted to only being able to move his head back and forth but atleast the warmth inside the cocoon was making him feel slightly more comfortable with the pain.

~This human is eager. He wasn't even asked to go inside. He is desperate to please us.~ Astor said to Rhys. He stared at the human before him. Reodalis noticed this and tried to speak to him.

'I just want to let you know that it's, it's not necessary to do all this. You can save the time of trying to convert me since it's not needed. I am willing to give my services if only I can get the enzyme in return.' He said looking at Astor straight in the eye. The sweat was dripping off of his forehead onto the floor. Astor gave another look of disgust at the pitiful human before him. Reodalis wasn't telepathic but he could sense that Astor wasn't going to be easy to talk to. He decided to turn his attention to Rhys.

'You! You look like a friendly Wraith. You look like you are more willing to listen to what I have to say. I can tell you information regarding my former hive! Please trust me. I...I don't know how much longer I can stay like this.'

"I see," Shrike murmured, and said no more, keeping his thoughts to himself, as he palmed open the cell door.

It slid open with an organic rattle; the single occupant hung from the wall, shackles at wrist and ankle, a filthy Genii uniform still in place. Upon hearing Shrike's tread and the lighter steps of Reece, the human lifted his head, and stared, full of defiance and hate. Cold grey eyes met Reece and Shrike head on, the pupils no more than pinholes. From somewhere, he pulled back mucus and spat it, a foul blood coloured stream, to spatter Shrike's boots.

"I see you may need a further spell of solitude," the Wraith said, his tone dry. He glanced sideways at Reece, a shark's grin curving his mouth. "Remember not to kill him, and you will earn the Commander's approval." A shrug followed, eloquent in its dismissal. "If not... well... "

Turning on his heel, Shrike left, heading back towards the bridge to oversee more repairs.

{Bullseye} {Handler}

Bullseye took up inspecting one of the most heavily-damaged darts. The canopy still held, albeit barely. The occupant was fortunate. The canopy flickered off the moment Bullseye touched the dart’s wing, revealing the slumping form of an unconscious drone inside. He summoned the Handler, saving his suspicion for the other’s arrival, and rapidly scanned the dart for potential threats. He found none.

The Handler soon arrived with a group of masked warriors.

~I think he is from the hive that just attacked us.~ Thinking of their reduced number of masked warriors, evident in the smaller group at Reese’s command, he added ~We could certainly use another able-bodied worker.~

The Handler nodded, summoning two other masked warriors to extract the dart pilot. ~His mind will seek guidance just the same. He will easily be integrated into the command of our hive.~

The Chief Engineer looked the acquired dart over with Bullseye. There was a mixture of both disappointment at finding no new technology to reverse engineer and contentment that the rival hive didn’t have any additional technology to contend with.

{Rhys} {Reodalis}

Lifting his brows in surprise, Rhys held back a chuckle at being addressed thus. He turned to Astor, ignoring Reodalis. ~Did you hear that? I have been called many things, all of them quite rude, but this is the second time in five minutes a human calls me 'friendly'. Do I have something about me that triggers this impression?~ He gave a mental shrug and stepped towards Reodalis. ~If the humans are trying to be endearing it does not work.~

Hope and fever gleamed in Reodalis's eyes as he saw the Wraith approaching. He could already feel the beginnings of painful spasms building up in his body – if he did not get the enzyme quickly he would suffer terribly. "Please, I will tell you everything I know, just ask. Anything."

Rhys bit back a sneer. It was disgusting to see this human grovel, ready to kill his own mother just to get his next fix. Converting humans like this was a good and proven method, yet he was revolted by the degeneration those humans underwent once their daily Gift was denied. Not for the first time he had doubts. Ever since the unfortunate incident with the Satedan Tyre he chose the candidates with more care.

Besides, they still needed to find out why this worshipper had no master. Fixing his golden eyes on the unlucky human, he asked "Tell me, what has brought you here, why are you not with your hive?"

Stuttering in his eagerness to please, Reodalis told his story. "I was on a mission… on, on, on a planet. To observe some Genii. The dart that should've picked me up never came. Instead I dialed the Portal to, to bring me to our secret hideout, where, where we worshippers met to exchange intel. Two other worshippers were there; they also weren't picked up, and it became evident our hive must have been destroyed."

Rhys looked at Astor. ~Genii? They seem to have their dirty hands all over the galaxy. Maybe this human can tell us more about them.~

The Wraith had turned away! No, no. To get his attention back, Reodalis began to plead again, loudly. "Please, I can tell you more. That wasn't all yet. Give me the Gift! I deserve it! I'm a good worshipper!"

Rhys let out a low, threatenting growl. Hating himself for giving in to the whining, he spun around and swiftly brought his feeding hand down on the man's chest with a loud thud. The temptation to simply kill this creature and release him from his suffering was strong, but he could still give them important information about the Genii. There was no harm done in keeping him alive another day.

Reodalis wasn't sure if this Wraith would let him live, and at this moment he didn't care. Either way was welcome – if he lived he would feel better for it, and if he died he would no longer suffer. On the brink of darkness he could feel the flow of his life force stop – and return. He would live, he realised as euphoria washed over him.

The human slumped forward and lost consciousness, held upright only by the cocoon's web, and Rhys stepped back. He had to resist the urge to wipe his hand somewhere, it felt filthy. Looking at the limb form of the female on the floor he cheered up. She would taste much better, her defiance still fresh and her spirit not broken yet.

He glanced over to Rhys and gave a slight grin.

~You must have a gentle presence that the humans like.~

He was of course jesting with Rhys. He turned his attention back to Reodalis and his grin faded to his usual straight face. He observed Rhys and Reodalis exchange talks with each other. He could see the human tremble as he spoke to Rhys. When Reodalis mentioned the Genii it brought back memories for him. His former hive had a few encounters with them and they proved themselves to be an annoyance. He nodded at Rhys in agreement that this human could have more virtal information regarding the Genii.

Astor heard Rhys' low growl and watched him suddenly turn around to give the pitiful human the Gift of Life. The human let out a small gasp and fell forward into a state of unconsciousness. The cocoon's strong webbing held his weight back and prevented him from falling onto the floor. The remaining sweat and dirt from the human's forehead dripped onto the floor.

~Hmm...I suppose it was a good idea for him to go into the cocoon.~

He could sense disgust coming from Rhys and he couldn't blame him. The human had a smell of replusion.

~If this male human proves to be useless with his information perhaps we should let one of the drones feed on him.~

Astor wrinkled his nose at Reodalis' body. The stench of the addict made the air nauseating for him. He wondered if all wraith enzyme addict's were this dirty. His thoughts shifted over to the human female who's defiance excited his senses.

~I think the human female will be more fun without a cocoon. This male human was too easy. ~

He noticed Rhys was looking over at the female.

~Shall we wake her?~

Rhys thought about Astor's suggestion of letting a drone feed on the male. ~We wait until he wakes up and see if he has to offer us more information. If he disappoints us…~ he shrugged slightly ~whoever wants to have him can feed on him.~

Not sparing the male human a second glance he walked over to the female. Astor remarked she could be more fun without a cocoon. Rhys remembered Astor had little experience with conversion and was eager to try things out, but this ambition had to be channelled in a sensible way. ~I would not recommend letting her unrestricted; she could break free. She may be untrained but she is not harmless.~ Rhys suspected Astor liked to hunt humans for sport and probably enjoyed a bit of struggling and the thrill of the chase. Rhys would not judge him for that, but he himself prefered easy prey, as he was of a more cautious nature.

~This is he? Very well Shrike, leave him to me. I will indulge myself for a time, let me know please as soon as you have heard from Father.~ She turned to the man and stood there for a moment, then without warning she slapped him hard across the mouth, drawing blood.

~Leave me please Shrike, I will deal with this one alone..do not fear for me, rather fear for him. Though I will not harm his weak mortal body~ Her mouth formed a snarl. With an unseen movement, she was behind the captive, her arm curled around his neck. She sniffed him. "Ah....a worshipper gone astray. So tell me mortal, why you are so valuable to me and why we should not simply airlock you? Hmmm? you have a name? Speak!" She loosened her grip and was standing in front of him again.

Astor sensed that Rhys had more of a cautious nature. Astor would admit though that the experience of learning about conversion or the idea of controlling wild prey that made him eager. He had to think of what to do quickly as the human female was slowly waking up. Astor decided that he would be able to personally handle the female since he had experience in dealing with all humans types. But he still called in a few of the drones to stand guard as a precaution. He slowly walked over to her as she was moving to sit up.

Haeda found herself lying on the cold floor. She had a slight headache and her eyes were blinded by the lights on the ceiling. She blinked a few times for them to adjust. She was still a bit dazed and felt a pain in her body which was a result from the stunner blast. A small moan came from her mouth as she slowly moved to sit up but was suddenly pulled up roughly by strong hands. She looked up and recognized that the hands belonged to the dreadlocked wraith. He moved his face closer to hers and let out a growl. She rolled her eyes at him and turned her face the other way.

'...out of all the things I had to wake up to it had to be you.'

Haeda attempted to struggle but it only made the dreadlocked wraith tighten his grips on her arms. She believed herself to be strong but she knew the odds were against her. She watched his eyes move up and down upon her. She tried to bite him but missed as he quickly moved his head back. She laughed at him hoping that it would teach him not to look at her like that again.

'I look tasty don't I?' She moved her head back and forth between Astor and Rhys. 'I will kill myself before I let anyone of you feed upon me.'

The dreadlocked wraith growled and then turned her around so that she was facing the smooth haired wraith. She continued to yell and struggle and even spat out a few times at the smooth haired wraith but she found herself getting tired after a few moments of useless struggling. She looked over at the drones who had their large stunner rifles in her hands.

It's no use struggling. They want me to get tired. I also don't want to get stunned again...

She ceased her struggling and stood quietly letting out a sigh. She had to use any energy she had left over for later...assuming there would be a later. She looked over at the unconcious Reodalis in the cocoon and then glared at the smooth haired wraith in front of her.

'What do you want from me?'

The female behaved exactly as he had predicted, Rhys observed. She was strong and watching her struggle triggered his feeding instinct. The heavy smell of defiance and sweat was exciting, too. Rhys did not hunt, but it didn't mean he was immune to these basic stimuli, yet he kept his composure and watched her impassive.

As she said she looked tasty Rhys had to stifle a laugh. 'You have no idea how tasty', he thought. Then she uttered empty threats about killing herself. He heard Astor growl and saw him turn her around. ~These humans are irrational beings. How is she supposed to kill herself?~

She had stopped struggling, and fortunately also spitting, and glared at Rhys.
"What do you want from me?"

He stepped in front of her, almost touching her, until she was forced to look up at him. When he was sure he had her undivided attention, he simply said "Your servitude."

Haeda hated every second of this; she hated the ugly drones, she hated the dreadlocked Wraith whose claws left marks on her arms, and she hated the smooth haired Wraith who was so close to her she could smell him. Fury raged inside her as she met his eyes – creepy eyes, like a cat's, and cold. She wished she could claw at his face and wipe away that indifferent expression.

"I will never serve you," she hissed. Then she kicked his shin with all force, felt her foot making contact with his leg – and then gritted her teeth. Her foot hurt like hell and the worst thing was, he didn't budge! He merely bared his disgusting teeth and growled at her.

"You are mistaken - you will serve us. You will become like him," he jerked his head in the direction of Reodalis. "Only less revolting."

"What did you do to him?"

Rhys enjoyed playing with humans, they were so predictable. He addessed Astor. ~Now would be a good time to show her what we did to the male, don't you think so?~ He lifted his feeding hand, slowly, giving her time to recognise what he was up to.

Haeda's eyes widened and she made a desperate attempt to free herself – she let her head slump down and jerked it back with power, hoping she would hit the dreadlocked Wraith's face.

He continued to stare ahead, looking through her rather than at her when she came back into view. "I have information that would be of use to you. Haeda's attempt to break free proved useless as her head only managed to hit the dreadlocked wraith chest which also resulted him in holding onto her more tightly. The smooth haired wraith in front of her was still standing there with his feeding hand raised and for a moment she was afraid. If he wanted her servitude why was his feeding hand raised at her like that? She was afraid of what was coming after seeing the state of Reodalis in the cocoon. All these thoughts became insignificant though, and were washed away to the back of his consciousness as he tasted the sweet, wild life force rushing through his system and he fought hard to keep his emotions under control and to not growl in delight.

Haeda gasped at the sudden pain and stared in disbelief. Nothing could have prepared her for this experience! The pain was intense but she found herself unable to shout, even unable to breathe! Her body was paralysed and she could do nothing but wait for the pain to end - for her life to end.

Rhys was glad he wasn't hungry, otherwise he would have given in to temptation and would have killed her. Haeda almost felt ecstatic as she felt her life return. When the Wraith finally withdrew his hand she sagged, hanging limply in the dreadlocked Wraith's grip. Throughout the hive, with the worst of the repairs behind them, a number of Wraith employed in rote tasks watched the worshipper selection and conversion process with interest. Bets were placed on Haeda and Thalinus’s survival; winners would take the first available shift to rest.

Oblivious as he made repairs on a dart’s energy beam weapon, Bullseye’s mind drifted back to snippets of conversations about possibly acquiring Lantean beaming technology. Hopefully, the prospects of gaining this new knowledge and of recovering old hull repair knowledge were not too good to be true. At least he would soon find out about the latter; the hive drew near to the sun.

If Bonewhite came back to the hive with nothing, or worse, was killed...? Baring his teeth in a silent snarl, Shrike moved into the bridge and stepped up to the command console after Third vacated it.

Her comment to Rhys proved that she still had some fight left in her.

~I will take my turn.~ Astor replied to Rhys' question.

Astor paused for a moment as he sensed a few other younger Wraith brothers near by curiously looking on at the conversion process. He briefly glanced over to Rhys with a grin.

~It appears we have an audience.~

Suddenly Astor pushed Haeda onto floor. She let out a grunt and stared right at him with angry eyes. 'Let me guess. Is it your turn now?' Astor gave a wicked grin and kneeled before her with his feeding hand ready to strike. 'You should feel honoured human as you will be my first to convert.' He hissed as he slammed his feeding hand onto her chest.

Don't take out too much. He remembered or everything would of been for nothing and Rhys would no doubt be disappointed. The taste of her energy went into Astor's body and he savoured every ounce. Its taste was the equivalent of what humans called sweet. He almost found himself losing control when her lifeforce reached its brink and quickly pushed it back before it was too late. Haeda gasped as she returned to normal and then laughed when she looked up at Astor.

'You're an amature.'

Astor growled and slammed his feeding hand on her again repeating the process. He wasn't sure when she would reach her limit and slammed his hand on her for a third time. He could see why Rhys enjoyed converting stubborn humans. He found himself repeating the process over and over with eagerness. After several tries she finally yelled out as she struggled to breathe.

'Wait!'

Rhys became aware of their audience. He briefly acknowledged their presence and advised them to pay close attention before focusing on Astor again, to make sure he didn't get carried away. To his satisfaction Astor not only had eagerness to learn but he also had talent. Rhys had to hide his surprise at Astor's method of converting her lying down; a female worshipper lying down tended to wake other associations in Rhys than conversion, but then if it worked for Astor who was he to tell him off?

He had to hide a smirk at the female insulting Astor as an amateur, at least she hadn't lost her sense of humour. Astor seemed to enjoy himself, yet Rhys would have to stop him. There were only so many times a human could endure the Gift in a row. She would have to rest for a few hours soon.

He was just about to tell Astor to stop when the human yelled out. "Wait""

~Let her breathe, you have done well for your first time but she needs a break now or her body will shut down.~ He sent telepathic vibrations of approval to Astor before stepping up to the female and looking down at her.

Haeda sucked in air greedily, glad she had bought herself a moment's rest. "Hell! If you are going to kill me, do it quickly, for the Ancestors' sake!"

"Oh, we are not going to kill you, that would be besides the point. Did you change your opinion yet?"

Haeda felt strange things going on in her body - it didn't feel like her own and she didn't have full control, and she couldn't think clearly. Her heart was beating fast, too fast and she knew she was supposed to hate the alien creatures hovering above her, but for the life of her she couldn't remember why. "What? What opinion?"

"Are you willing to serve us?"

"Can you make it stop? Can you make the world stop spinning?"

The strange creature with the long hair bent down and it smiled at her. She was happy to see a smile and it helped to focus on that smile, it made the world spin slower. She feebly attempted to smile back.

"Yes, we can make the world stop spinning. We can make you feel good," the creature purred. "We will make you more powerful than you ever imagined being - all we ask for in return is your servitude." The strange, multi-layered voice drifted through Haeda's consciousness, seductive and welcoming. She nodded.

"Yes..." she sighed, then she fainted and her head rolled sideways.

Rhys turned to Astor. ~She won't stay this way. She will be unconscious for a few hours and when she awakes she will have a strong headache and a very bad temper. We will have to perform the Gift again, until she remains docile for good.~

Astor and Rhys's ministations with some human female was begining to annoy her, she could feel their lust in her head and longed for their attentions for her own body. ~Finish it now you two or I'll come and do it my way~

Rhys chose to ignore the whining of the 'daughter'. Converting worshippers was his job and he would not tolerate anyone interfering and telling him when to stop, least of all a psychopathic whelp. He knew her threats were empty; should she really dare to intervene and lay hand upon his subject he would make an official accusation, of her disrupting and sabotaging his work. If necessary for no other reason than showing her where she belonged in the hive's hierarchy.

Disconcerting images accompanied her telepathic message; images he decided not to analyse further. Did she try to ensnare them?

The scent of her defiance was greater than that of Haeda's and perhaps that was why Astor tended to be more lenient with her when she got herself into trouble. He looked away from Rhys and walked away with a sneer.

The soft hiss of blade leaving scabbard was barely perceptable, with a blurring motion the impossibly fast Katana came down and severed the man's shackles, cleanly taking off the top of his right index finger as well. The blade she plunged point down into the deck, itquivered, she then grabbed his forearm and took his bloodied finger in her mouth, oblivious to the scream he fought to control in his mouth. Her remnant Wraith enzymes, as with her, gave self healing, in this case it would cauterise the stub, leaving only a purplish lump. If she bit him on the neck though, only death. She drank in his warm blood before she finished and savoured it's sweet taste. Dropping his hand, she then grabbed him by the neck and hoisted him up at full arms length, his legs dangling free.

"WRONG ANSWER!" She spat at him, her lips curled back to reveal perfect white teeth, for the exception of her two very pointed and sharp canines. "You know who I am, now answer my question!"

He barely noticed his liberation from his shackles, concentrating on swallowing back the scream that built in his throat. Bane, of course, or Fear, were the names he's heard her called by, but neither was her real name, he was sure. Still, no sense in losing further appendages over something so trivial. He breathed deeply, careful to have his voice under control before he spoke. "Thalinus, my name is Thalinus." He looked her in the eye. It would do him no good to show fear. "What do you want to know?"

Rhys nodded his agrement with Astor at his suggestion to continue the conversion together later on. He ordered a drone to stand guard at the special holding cell, not only to protect the human but also the drone was to inform him once she woke up.
~I will inform you when we can proceed with her.~

As Astor walked away, Rhys wondered what he thought about the 'daughter'. It was clear from the way Astor had behaved towards her earlier on that he was quite tolerant. Rhys stored this observation away with a note to himself to stay alert and wary. If there should ever come a confrontation his way with the 'daughter' he would not count on Astor's support.

After a final glance at the still unconscious form of the male worshipper he turned and headed back to his office.

He looked at her blankly for a second, trying hard to conceal his confusion. "If she carries on like this, I'm going to get whiplash from her mood swings" He nodded slightly. "Understood, mistress." He hesitated to call her mistress, but he was rather attached to the rest of his limbs, quite literally in fact, and it would not do to risk angering her again now that she seemed to have cooled.

He waited for her to lead on, and followed a respectful distance behind her. He hoped, for the sake of his own life, that he carried the information they sought.

Reese kept her mind apart from the rest of the hive, it was a knack she had been taught by the "Old One", Todd to the humans. 'Ayan' meaning "grandfather" in her old Camrian tongue to Reese. She kept up a light pace that Thalinus could keep up with. She turned many corners and soon was nearing the higher Wraith quarters area.

Upon arriving at his office, Rhys felt more relaxed - the ship's system were stable, he had fed and he'd had some fun in converting a defiant human. Now he could focus on his work properly.

On his desk, sitting on top of everything else, was the data tablet containing the 'daughter's report and a flat, rectangular device of earth design. With a swift stroke of his fingers on the screen he brought the data tablet to life and watched the screen fill with Wraith script. Apparently she and her drones had stumbled upon a Lantean team of scientists. The humans had fled and left some equipment behind, among the items was an earth computer, the flat device the Lanteans called 'laptop'.

Rhys examined the laptop closely. Its surface was metallic and smooth, and it bore the insignia of the Lanteans - a winged horse. Turning the device over in his hands, he found a small switch and opened the laptop. What an ugly design, Rhys thought. It had nothing of the organic elegance of Wraith tech.

Luckily he had studied earth technology on the rare occasions it had found its way into his hands and he knew how to handle it. The display lit up and showed the winged horse before initiating the Lantean operating system. The technology was clumsy - he had to key in every command in a wearisome manner instead of using telepathic commands.

After a couple of tiring moments his eyes grew wide - this was a lucky find! This device contained the schematics of the earth battleships, including their beaming technology! No wonder the 'daughter' had been so confident when she talked about it, she hadn't even needed to put effort into this - it had simply fallen into her hands.

Rhys wondered how much more she's found out. The laptop could contain more valuable information and he would give it a closer look. But first he needed to inform the Second of this find - the ship schematics would have to be incorporated into the hive's database and analysed by the engineers.

Also Rhys would have to contact the 'daughter' to find the time to work on the beaming technology together. He bared his teeth in a silent snarl - he didn't like the prospect at all to have to deal with that brat.

First things first though; he concentrated on the telepathic network and tried to locate Shrike. He would know what to do with the information and he would set what priority working on the schematics had.

Rhys left his office and headed towards the bridge.

The ship's quasi-intelligence drifted around him, jagged still with residual pain from the great hurt it had received, and he soothed it, sending a calming balm along each neural link. Within the network, he could see others attempting to maintain patterns, and help the Hive to to return to full health. An impression of warmth on the oter hull told Shrike that she was being moved into position, and he allowed a low purr to leave his lips.

Opening his eyes, he came away from the controls and stepped down from the dais. There had been a mental presence looking for him, a signature he recognised - that of Rhys - and the flavour of that thought had been urgent.

~Here ~ he snapped, and a young blade came to take his place. ~Report in one hour about the repairs ~

Receiving Shrike's message, Rhys slowed down and headed for the nearest computer terminal between him and the approaching Second. He had uploaded the data from the Lantean laptop to the hive's database so it would be accessible from everywhere on the ship.

Swiftly he brought the schematics on the screen where they glowed in golden light - three-dimensional blueprints of the earth battleships for Shrike to see for himself as soon as he arrived. Feeling the Second getting nearer, Rhys sent out a message. ~I have news of great importance that may hold a significant advantage if it should become necessary that we have to battle the Lanteans.~

Rhys was not entirely sure the shaky alliance with the Lanteans could be renewed. If they needed the schematics to find out a weak spot in the battleships' layout it could save their necks. If the alliance remained stable... well, it was always good to know your enemies and your friends.

A sense of triumph emanated from the clevermen taking measurements at the hull, as soaking in the energy from the sun, the hive began to respond favorably and heal with greater speed.

With the dart repair complete, the Chief Engineer divided up groups of clevermen to begin growing more replacement part stock and look into the recent problem with the pods.

A few, he left in the dart bay for wrapping up loose ends on dart repair and weapons testing. It was just as well: a group of blades had already assembled around Bullseye and a loud, excited, and animated discussion was underway about testing the repaired energy weapons on nearby asteroids. Using them like skeet, the asteroids were to be blown apart by the comet-like pulses of energy racing through the sky. Great importance? The Second pondered on this as he came closer to Rhys position. For many of his brothers, the pending alliance with humans posed far too many risks, depleted as they were in numbers, and with no Queen to boot. At least, no real Queen. He growled as he rounded the corner, seeing the Security Chief at work, and the glyphs that tumbled on the screen.

Rhys bowed slightly in greeting and began his explanation. ~By a lucky coincidence the Daughter came into possession of a Lantean item of technology containing these schematics of the earth battleships, like the one they call the 'Daedalus'. It seemed wise to me to upload them into our database so the engineers can analyze them properly. My own knowledge in ship engineering is too limited to make good use of these but maybe our experts will be able to find a weakness in the ship's build. Just in case we might have to battle the Lanteans.~

He was hesitant to express his concerns about Bonewhite's plan of contacting Atlantis for that might be counted as an attempt to undermine the Commander's authority. ~Also, there is data about the beaming technology the Lanteans use. It seems to be far more advanced than our own as it can beam persons and objects through walls and over great distances. We cannot use it as it is - there is still a lot of work to do on the coding to adapt it to our technology. We may even have to build completely new components. For that I will also need the help of the engineers. The Daughter however has requested that I help her with the coding.~ At that thought Rhys couldn't hold back an annoyed hiss. ~Which of course I will do as it serves the whole hive.

Even as he did so, he knew the other was troubled by the Commander seeking alliance with the humans of Atlantis, an emotion he could not fault him for. It went against his very nature to consort in such a manner with food.

~The beaming technology is indeed far superior ~ he conceded, and drummed his talons thoughtfully. Such an addition to their arsenal could prove most useful, not least in the all too frequent skirmishes between rival hives. ~Perhaps there is a role for the Lanteans, after all ~ he murmured, almost to himself, and then scrutinised the Security Officer, whose demeanour spoke of great irritation. ~Work with the child, and report to me if she becomes... troublesome ~

He bent back over the console, reading the schematics rapidly, and added, ~Your ability to remain impartial is necessary, sub-commander, and you must ensure the work regarding this find is a priority. You will not question the Commander's orders, and you will not antagonise Reese ~

Good news and bad news, Rhys thought. The good news were that Shrike considered this find important enough to make working on it a priority. It was always good to have one's abilities of assessment confirmed and appreciated. Rhys would have to make sure the Chief Engineer got informed as soon as possible.

The bad news were that Shrike had felt it necessary to warn him to remain impartial. Rhys always thought of himself as a professional and the hive came first in whatever he did. Even though he was certain the daughter would utterly annoy him, he would do his best to adapt the Lantean beaming technology. But there was a silver lining - Shrike knew enough of the child to offer Rhys a last resort. If things went downhill he could still report her to the Second. Not that he would take this step lightly - after all it could be expected of him that he could deal with a youngling.

He lowered his head in agreement. ~I will proceed as you ordered and will take the necessary steps to ensure the schematics will be analysed. And I will work with the child. Do not worry, I will be able to handle her.~

Life on this hiveship was never getting boring. Since he had come here, Glade had learned much about other Wraith cultures. Things were handled different on this ship than on his birthhive - which was no wonder, considering this crew was a mix of Wraith from all over the galaxy. Guide had a knack for drawing the most extraordinary blades and clevermen to him. Glade had only seen him once but he had felt the aura of power he emitted, and he was excited to be part of this hive, even though it meant he was in constant danger of being blown out of the sky.

Stepping out of the transporter, he approached his destination in the dart bay. A group of blades was clustered around Bullseye, apparently having fun in testing the weapons systems. This was unexpected. Rhys would have loved to stay and learn more about the strange ships but Shrike's order had been unequivocal. The Second was radiating impatience and agitation which was no wonder under these circumstances.

Briefly baring his teeth in disappointment, Rhys nodded and backed away, aware that Shrike was hiding something from him. But Rhys had his orders and got work to do; the Second would not tolerate him lingering here and he pulled himself together.

As he left, his thoughts were spinning around the question who these strange ships belonged to. Either the Travelers or the hostile alien race they knew pitiful little of. The Travelers usually didn't create fleets - that would make them vulnerable as it drew too much attention. Whatever Shrike planned, Rhys hoped they would not engage the strange ships in a battle; he could still feel the faint sensation of the hive's pain in his mind.

Rhys was on his way to meet the Chief Engineer when a telepathic message of a drone teased him with a nice prospect - the human female he and Astor had converted had woken up. Astor will be delighted to hear of this, Rhys thought, curling his lips in a smirk that showed his sharp teeth. Sadly, I have no time to waste for her now, first I need to talk to the engineers.

Rhys issued an order to the drone to contact Astor to let him know of the human. ~Relay to him, I will him meet him at the holding cell as soon as possible.~

A dull sense of confirmation came back over the telepathic network. The drone would do as he was told.

Life on this hiveship was never getting boring. Since he had come here, Glade had learned much about other Wraith cultures. Things were handled different on this ship than on his birthhive - which was no wonder, considering this crew was a mix of Wraith from all over the galaxy. The Old One had a knack for drawing the most extraordinary blades and clevermen to him. Glade had only seen him once but he had felt the aura of power the Old One emitted, and he was excited to be part of this hive, even though it meant he was in constant danger of being blown out of the sky.

Stepping out of the transporter, he approached his destination in the dart bay. A group of blades was clustered around Bullseye, apparently having fun in testing the weapons systems. Respectfully he stepped up to Bullseye and bowed slightly. ~I hope I do not interrupt anything of importance but I finished my work on the bridge and was sent here to ask if there was still anything that requires repair.~

<Dart Bay>

One standard hour had passed during the testing of the dart weapons, the necessary portion having been concluded twenty minutes ago. Aside from masked warriors patrolling the area, the dart bay was now empty, save for Glade, Bullseye, and the group of blades. Helpful was it was to have the blades pitching in and testing the weapons, it was time to move on for all of them. They excused themselves from the technical conversation that would likely ensue and waited for the last two blades to bring their darts back and dock them, all of them having taken turns flying in small groups. They walked off to the game room, speculating on the strange new ships that were approaching Bakun.

Bullseye nodded in acknowledgement to Glade. Bullseye had felt the calm mental presence of the newer Wraith on the hive, a presence that reminded him of clearings in the pine forests on the planet where he grew up. Yet, he hadn’t spoken to or worked with Glade in person. In fact, he was more than a little surprised the distanced apprentice had approached him.

~ Most of the remaining repairs consist of waiting, for both the hull to solidify and for the replacement parts to grow. We can join the other clevermen in the pod area or we can work on an any other technology you would like to study. ~

Giving the young cleverman a chance to think it over, Bullseye directed a two masked warriors to carry away a heavy vice with a target sighting attached to it, used to make sure the energy beam weapons didn’t move while being calibrated.

The data crystal turned over and over in Shrike's fingers as he considered his next move, barely acknowledging Rhys departure from the room as he read the tumbling glyphs in front of him. Was this information the Lanteans would find useful, and could it be another bargaining chip?

Slotting the warmed tech into the console, he quickly ran the telemetry through the encryption process, and huffedin satisfaction when the cycle completed. He read it back quickly, amended a few points, and removed it from the terminal.

Spinning on his heel, Shrike headed to the dart bay, linking with the Third, and sending advance warning to Bullseye of his return. ~I will be away from the Hive for some hours. Upon my return I expect it to be ready to go to hyperspace. Do I make myself clear? ~

The mist at his feet spun in eddies, swirling at the hem of his coat, as he moved through the ship to his destination.

{Astor} {Haeda}

Astor walked the long corridors of the hive ship on his usual patrol. Patrolling was tiresome and he often found himself wishing that he was still on his former hive with his former pod brothers. Atleast his former hive had excitement on most days for him. He was lost in thought until a he sensed a presence approaching from ahead.

A drone walked around the corner and stopped before Astor with information regarding the female prisioner Haeda. She would be ready for another round of converting and Rhys would meet with Astor after finishing up more important business. Astor nodded at the drone and dismissed him. He turned his heal and headed back towards the holding cell where the prisioner was waiting. I hope he doesn't expect me to wait for him. Astor smiled as he neared the holding cell area. He liked this human female for she was hot tempered and he enjoyed a little fight in his prey.

He walked past the drones standing guard and the holding cells that held the normal prisioners. Some of them shouted at him reaching their hand out but he ignored them as he headed toward the cell Haeda was in. His footsteps slowed as he neared the special holding cell. He looked through the prision bars at Haeda who was sitting quietly in the corner with her eyes closed. She didn't seem to notice his presence. He let out a growl and she looked to see who was there. Her calm face turned angry and she quickly got up shouting at him.

'Let me out of here!' She screamed and punched the hive wall. The delicious scent he enjoyed so much was in the air again. He closed his eyes briefly as he took her scent in. He glanced down the corridor and then at Haeda knowing he would be capable enough to handle her alone and entered the holding cell. The bars closed behind him and he walked over to the human female forcing her against the corner wall as he leaned over her short frame. She was pounding her fists against his chest in an attempt to push him away.

What is he doing here by himself??

'Get off me! What are you doing?!... Answer me!' She saw his feeding hand move towards her. She desperately tried a few kicks on him but he didn't seem to be bothered by them. He put more of his weight against her and placed his feeding hand lightly on her chest. Her hands grabbed his wrist tightly and looked up at him with anger in her eyes. 'Go ahead and do it. It will be a relief for me if I die.' He was close enough to her that she could feel his breath on her face.

'You don't have to die. Serve us and you will be rewarded.' Astor flexed his feeding hand that was on her chest. He wasn't much for words especially human words. He hated having to talk out loud but since humans lacked telepathy he had no choice.

'Who's us? I only see you in this cell. Where's that other wraith? Not that I miss him or anything because I'd like to give him some punches as well.' Haeda laughed. He bared his teeth at her and sunk his claws into her flesh as he started to take her life force. She gasped and her grip tightened on his wrist. He placed his other hand against the wall to support his weight. He closed his eyes as he tasted her sweet lifeforce once again. He wanted to take it all but knew he couldn't. As her limit was reached he placed her life back into her and she returned to normal. He opened his eyes again and watched her gasp for air. He remained close to her.

'Serve us?' He widen his eyes and bared his teeth at her. She glared angrily up at him with a single tear falling from her face.

'No.'

Her tears was a sign of weakness and that she would break soon. Astor readied his feeding hand again for another round but suddenly sensed a presence outside the hive ship. It was alien and possibly hostile. He was in no mood to engage in battle but it was his duty to help his brothers first.

Haeda looked at him expecting him to repeat what he did but found that he was standing there staring at her with his yellow eyes. As she was about to say something he suddenly hissed in her face and quickly left the holding cell leaving her alone once again.

Watching the vice with interest, Glade thought about Bullseye's offer. He was relieved that all necessary repairs were done, and he was glad to be offered the opportunity to study a technology of his choice. Usually he was just ordered about by the senior clevermen.

~If my assistance is not required for urgent repairs I would very much like to study the ship's sensor arrays with your permission. Especially with the foreign ships approaching Bakun this could be useful. I would like to know how to the incoming data is analysed to identify the ships.~

Hoping his request hadn't been too bold he waited for Bullseye's reaction. Although he had not worked with him yet, Bullseye seemed to be a calm and focused man which Glade found reassuring as he didn't like to work with short-tempered tutors.

{Rhys} {Chief Engineer} - NPC

Locating the Chief Engineer had been the easy part; explaining to him what Rhys wanted had been somewhat tricky. The Chief Engineer was clearly in an impatient mood after he'd had to supervise all the urgent repairs. Nevertheless, Rhys had direct orders from the Second so the Chief Engineer would have to obey.

~Utmost priority you say?~ A hiss accompanied the question as the Chief Engineer straightened up to his full impressive height, glancing down at Rhys who was a couple of inches smaller.

Hissing in response, Rhys motioned for the Chief Engineer to follow him to the nearest computer terminal. ~Come and see for yourself.~ Reluctant, the Chief Engineer came closer and bared his teeth at Rhys, but as he beheld the stolen Daedalus schematics his stance became attentive and his eyes widened. ~I have to agree, this is interesting and I see why it should be our priority to analyse it.~ He ran his fingers over the screen, greedily tracing the outlines of the battleship displayed.

~I will leave you now to play with your new toy,~ Rhys chuckled but the Chief Engineer was already deeply immersed in the plans. That's the right attitude, Rhys thought.

Distracted the Chief Engineer called out to Rhys. ~Do not worry, I will work with my best men on this project. Shrike will see results very soon.~

Bullseye nodded in agreement with Glade’s reasonable request. ~ We have plenty of time to inspect the sensors. All that is left of the repairs are some heat-seared arteries connecting some of the hibernation pods. They are the least priority because hibernation isn’t an option for the hive any time soon, but will be repaired within the next hour or two anyhow.

You are correct, inspecting the sensors sounds like a good idea to make sure they are in perfect working order. We’ll start with the main sensor cluster at the front of the ship.~

Walking with Glade to the nearest transporter, he responded to two telepathic inquiries.

Spinning on his heel, Shrike headed to the dart bay, linking with the Third, and sending advance warning to Bullseye of his return. ~I will be away from the Hive for some hours. Upon my return I expect it to be ready to go to hyperspace. Do I make myself clear? ~

Remotely accessing the hive’s computer network, Bullseye retrieved the measurements for the curing rate of the new hull growth. Based on that that rate of speed, he calculated that a few hours would be more than enough to allow the hive to be ready for hyperspace flight again. With no technological concerns regarding this timeframe, he responded affirmatively.

~Understood, Sir.~

{Chief Engineer} – NPC

Looking over the Daedalus schematics, the Chief Engineer remembered that Bullseye had been on board the ship. His mind reached out to the cleverman. ~Show me your memories of the Daedalus.~

As the imagery of the memories came to him, the Chief Engineer laughed dryly. The curious Wraith had walked through almost the entire ship when he had directed the masked warriors to gather up the unconscious human crew. He had looked over everything and committed it to memory. That was an unexpected bonus before the memories of the complex engineering room interface streamed to him: cold, box-like consoles, laden with many series of small screens, levers, knobs, and a seemingly endless array of multi-colored buttons.

Now she had a point for her spear, Reese was pleased. Should she reveal her contact or not. There was little risk, if Thalinus betrayed her, Reese would simply dispose of him. "Bain Fadel, the mayor's daughter. She is somewhat of a priestess among her worshippers, they are something of two hunderd strong scattered across several worlds, yet she is only eighteen of her years. Strong willed, but a willow of a body." She looked him over again and nodded. "Come we will go and see Third and find out how well I stand in his esteem."

As Reese walked swiftly from her room to the bridge she spoke softly to Thalinus. "When we meet with Third, bow your head, do not speak unless spoken to and when you do, only honesty will serve, understood?"

Moving forward towards the bridge where she would find Third she reached out to him. ~Left Hand of my Father I would speak to you of great import and I need a request granted. I also bring the re-captured Worshipper and Mercenary Thalinus. He is now under my protection and mine to command~

Bullseye sensed that his lessons on the ship’s sensory input were being understood and eagerly absorbed. He was glad to have another cleverman on board who liked to accumulate knowledge for the sake of knowledge, like their old Commander.

His eyes widened, impressed with Glade’s ambitions, then stopped blinking as he peered intently at the readings from the ships nearing Bakun before answering the last question. With almost 6,000 years of life experience, he could have accomplished more notable feats or risen in rank, but he had no political ambitions, valued his free time, and chose to divide on-duty time between learning skills from both blades and clevermen. Not specializing made him well-rounded, but outclassed in every field. Enjoying his own life took precedence, especially in these uncertain times that almost saw him dead aboard the Daedalus and turned each time he had to feed into a risk that the Hoffan plague would make it has last. Yet, there was one area he wanted to know more about, and like Glade’s field of interest, the lost knowledge made it difficult.

~ I most enjoy working with organic technology. Learning more about hive maintenance and reconfiguration is an interest, but those with such knowledge are rarer than ever. I hope time and fortune favor us both in our goals. This hive is the most likely one to give us those chances.~

Throwing his hand back with force and releasing it she then spoke calmly. "It is irrelevent the number Third, the fact that this is happening should make us fear. With rapidly dwindling food stocks, it will lead to open war between hives. The sooner we get to the bottom of this and find the cause, the better." She turned her head to thalinus.

{Bullseye}

{Glade}

~I agree. Maintaining our ships is certainly one of our highest priorites. A very worthy field of interest.~ Glade felt silly for having such high-flying ideas and realised he could learn much from the calm, older Wraith.

Not wanting to seem like a blabbing lazybone, Glade hesitated and thought for a moment before sharing more of his story. At first he wasn't sure if he could tell Bullseye about strategic issues of his birth-hive but the young Wraith realised his allegiance was now with this hive. ~You are right. There are very few of us who know to heal and handle a hiveship. On my original hive there was only one cleverman who knew how to fix major problems. And even he would run out of options if the ship sustained severe damage - like for example the one we have just now. He often mourned the loss of the knowledge of the ancestors too.~

He noded in agreement at Bullseye's stament that this hive would be their best chance in achieving their goals.

Rhys observed the exchange between Third, the child and the human with interest. Her attitude was, as always, charming and he felt his own feeding hand clenching in frustration. A taste of what he would have to endure when working with her. 'Maybe I get lucky and she will leave the project entirely to me, seeing as she's so intent to leave the hive', he hoped.

He felt a wave of telepathic annoyance directed at his presence and turned to look at a bridge technician - a young blade who was apparently wondering why Rhys bothered to take up space on the bridge without contributing anything to the work going on. Without granting an answer Rhys turned his attention back to the conversation, it was far more important to gain intelligence than dealing with insolent younglings. Yet he felt the need to retaliate and lashed out with his mind to remind the technician to better focus on his work and to not question the actions of superiors. Eyes bulging, the technician hissed in sudden headache and bend over his compupter screen, not daring to look at Rhys again.

Bullseye tried to imagine someone like himself or the Chief Engineer Hasten keeping up with hive damage with limited knowledge. He kept his thoughts to himself that the birth hive of the apprentice sounded like it was doomed, if it wasn’t wiped out already. He wondered about the nature of the Queen that ran it, if it still had a Queen. Having so few clevermen was as much of a weakness as not having enough blades or warriors.

Then, his mind bent toward the lessened number of warriors the First Watch Captain and Handler Ease had to direct now. Steelflower, although convincing enough that those like the Dart Master Precision were enthralled by her, would not be creating batches of replacement warriors for the hive.

If Glades’s birthhive had an inexperienced or malleable Queen on board, perhaps her hive could be absorbed into this alliance. For the potential benefit of both hives, it was worth a try to get more information.

Glade remained silent when Bullseye addressed the feeding issues. Even though he didn't have much experience, he knew very well that having an unpopular opinion could well be one's death warrant. Before he stated his own thoughts on the matter he needed to know more about the general attitude on this ship. He was aware that Guide's hive was considered to be a very progressive hive, open to new scientific solutions that included research on how to feed on substantial food rather than life force. This modern attitude was the main reason why he'd come here.

Unlike most older Wraith he still remembered and treasured the feeling of eating solid food. Feeding on humans gave him pleasure as well but he hadn't quite come to terms with it yet, and it had always seemed to him there had to be a better way, especially with the Hoffan disease around and hives fighting each other over sparse feeding grounds. Then there had been the incident with the worshipper on his birth-hive, he had no intention of confessing to anyone...

He nodded. ~Yes, I do have an inkling our future will depend on our ability to modify our genetics.~

~ It sounds like your birth hive doesn’t have many on board. Is the Queen young? ~

That question caught Glade by surprise and he pondered how much to give away. ~My birth hive had been weakened by a succession of battles and the Queen had been on the verge of being forced into an alliance when I decided to leave. I did not think that new alliance would suit my personal aims as it is under control of a mighty and very traditional Queen who does not believe in progress.~

{Bullseye}

Interesting responses. Bullseye never specified any type of feeding solution, but Glade spoke of progressiveness as a reason for coming to this hive and was open to genetic modification. It was only confirmation that other hives probably knew about and disapproved of the repeated Lantean alliances, such as the defeat of the ZPM powered hive. It was also possible that another hive found the infected remnants of the lost hive that had split in two after the gene therapy Fair One worked so hard on had failed.

Bullseye said nothing to confirm or deny whether he meant genetic modification, cloning, circumventing the Hoffan plague, something new, or any combination thereof. He didn't know Glade's past and attributed the other's progressive views to his scientific ambitions. He let his next statement indirectly reveal more about his own political views:

~ A progressive mindset lends itself well to the interest in wormhole physics. Without the Ancients, the Lanteans known as Dr. McKay and Dr. Zelenka would be the best minds to collaborate with if new stargates should ever be built. Of course, they would be reluctant to collaborate with Wraith on such a project in the present conditions. ~

Bullseye was already prepared for the disappointment of not having the option to annex another hive or find a Queen who would cooperate with the Commander. Still, it was worth the try.

~ I was thinking your old hive sounded like one in need of an alliance. It is unfortunate that someone else has already made that conclusion. ~

Everything fell on the Third. Hasten made his way to the bridge to analyze the readings of unknown ship as it got closer for possible structural weaknesses that could advise the Third to be targeted.

At least the ship was battle-worthy again. Hopefully, the solar stream’s energy would continue to give them an edge as the ship basked in and absorbed the plentiful energy.

In case they survived such an attack - from what he had gathered from the sensor readings the ship was very dangerous to this old, battered hive.

Activating the transporter he vanished in a flash of light, only to be rematerialised three decks below at his station where he was expected to report to his superior in cases of emergency. Bullseye took up position at a weapon turret, preferring a more manual sighting style. He flexed his trigger-happy hands and placed them on the controls, his mind thinking about all the new situations his people faced.

What business did these others have that were about to attack? Were they like the Tau’ri, from some other galaxy?

He thought about his conversation with Glade and about the gene therapy Lastlight and Fair One worked on that resulted on the loss of feeding slits. He didn’t want to lose his, for that meant the loss if The Gift of Life too. Even if every human and Wraith could resolve their differences, there would still be the need for the Gift of Life because of unknown dangers like the ship that came for them now.

~ The hive is still in position to benefit from the solar stream; energy reserves for the energy weapons are not a concern for us at this time. The unknown cargo and propulsion systems of this ship could be of concern. If it explodes at close range, it could produce a shockwave large enough to destroy us too. ~

Something jerked Reese's memory, maybe it was hers or maybe anothers, but the image she was receiving from Hasten sent a shiver of fear down her spine. ~Do not engage, I repeat do not engage~ She screamed through her thoughts. Her fathers crusier was in her eyesight as Thalinus spoke, she answered him angrily. "Suspicious fools, offering food to a long dead diety. Today is a good day to die Thalinus, quickly this way." She saw several Blades she knew closely climbing into their darts.

~Talon, Scar, Whisper with me, we're taking 'Fathers" crusier.~

Talon looked over the rim of his cockpit with amazement. "Reese have you gone mad?" he spoke loudly, Scar and Whisper didn't object, they were a part of Reese's gang of 'louts' as Third called them, they were at her side in a moment.

"Who's the warrior Reese?" Scar asked

"Later, go and prep the cruiser." She said

They went ahead of her and soon the engines were whining, Talon stood tall over her. ~Your father will feed on you, you know that.~

~I'd rather he feed on me, than lose our hive, now go~

~HOLD THOSE DARTS! ~

Third's order thundered across every synapse and through the pool of thought, rippling outwards as it were a tsunami. Reinforcing Reese's scream into the hive mind, Thrid fed the details of the weaponry the aliens sported back to the clevermen at their posts. ~Prepare the hive for hyperspace! ~

Among the commotion of voices in his head Reese's voice stood out the most to him.

Do not engage? What-

Astor's thoughts were interrupted as the third in commands order to return the darts came in loud and clear. The hive ship was preparing itself to go into hyperspace. He immediately turned his dart around and headed back into the ship along with his fellow pilots.

~The ship is heading into hyperspace. Go back!~

Astor's voice echoed along with the other dart pilots as they flew towards the hive's hangar bay doors.

{Bullseye}

Upon receiving the news about the enemy ship's shields, Bullseye snarled and changed his focus away from the ship.

He tried to stay positive. Bad news: No shooting the enemy ship. Good news: Precision will be happy to not have to worry about more dart repairs. He mused to himself that, if he were a young Wraith again, he would have fired an energy blast at the ship anyhow, just to do it, to see where the energy would land and to hear the sound it made as it streaked across the sky and collided with its target. The corners of his mouth ticked upward at that thought.

Instead of targeting the ship, Bullseye focused his attention on the space surrounding the hive and the returning darts. If the enemy ship tried to launch something, he could intercept it.
