As Dean and Sam Winchester (Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki) prepare to embark on their sixth season of Supernatural, there's something brewing in Japan.

The Japanese division of Warner Bros. has a website up for Supernatural: The Animation, a 22-episode series from Madhouse (Batman: Gotham Knight, Death Note).

According to the Anime News Network: "The anime project will not only remake the best episodes from the live-action version, but also depict original episodes not seen in the live-action version. Those original episodes will include prologues of the Winchester brothers’ childhood, anime-only enemies, and episodes featuring secondary characters from the live-action version."

Warner Home Video is aiming to start releasing these in Japan on January 12, 2011. No word yet on the U.S. release.

The Winchester universe just got a bit bigger...

I honestly can't see this show as an animation.

Seems... strange.

But it's worth looking at.

This show is already strange.:D Proof that strange is not always a bad thing.

I really don't know why they have to re-make existing episodes in anime format, but I always love glimpses at the backstory. So I guess I'd give any original episodes a try. Too bad they're not airing yet, would certainly help with the hellatus.

I know my son will be ecstatic. He's a great fan of the show and of the anime genre. Could be a good thing to pull in the younger crowd, and turn them into fans of the real thing later.

Hmm, I was a bit perplexed by the comics when I read about those...and now this? :S Not my thing, but it'll be interesting to see how it goes down with the audiences! :D

Supernatural: The Anime?

Sam and Dean Winchester have traveled to heaven and hell, attended conventions devoted to a series of books based off of their lives and been trapped inside a sitcom – but now, for the first time, the characters from Supernatural are getting animated. AnimeNewsNetwork.com took note that the official website for Warner Bros. in Japan had launched a section for Supernatural: The Animation. At first, details were sketchy, but now, thanks to additional info from Cinema Today and AnimeAnime.jp, more is known about the project.

MADHOUSE, the anime studio behind projects like Death Note and Vampire D is producing Supernatural: The Animation, which will be comprised of a 22-episode season that will cover the storyline of the first two years of the live-action series. However, while some episodes will remake episodes from the original series, other stories will be brand new, and include, "prologues of the Winchester brothers' childhood, anime-only enemies, and episodes featuring secondary characters from the live-action version."

Supernatural: The Animation will be released on DVD in Japan starting with the first volume on January 12th with the first two episodes, and then a "Box 1" set on February 2nd, that includes episodes 3-12 and a "Box 2" set of episodes 13 to 22 on April 6th. Of course U.S. Supernatural fans will be very curious to see this material for themselves, begging the question of if and when it will get a proper release over here. I would guess that Warner Bros, who are well aware of the passion of Supernatural viewers, would make sure there is eventually an outlet for the animated Winchesters in America as well.

AnimeNewsNetwork.com notes that Supernatural creator Eric Kripke is credited as the anime project's creator, and MADHOUSE co-founder Masao Maruyama is executive producer.

More Detailed Info On Supernatural Becoming An Anime

According to the website Supernatural Wiki,"The first season will be twenty-two episodes covering the first two seasons of the original, remaking some episodes and adding new ones, to include the brothers' childhood, focus on secondary characters, and anime-only enemies."

The Japanese voices of the brothers will be Yuya Uchida (who roles include: Soul Eater's Dr. Franken Stein, Naruto Shippūden's Rinji) who will dub the role of Sam, while Hiroki Touchi (who roles include: Trinity Blood's Abel Nightroad, Bokurano's Kokkpelli) will dub the role of Dean (This guy actually sounds like Jensen Ackles if he were speaking in Japanese.) Both actors dubbed these same roles for the live-action version in Japanese.

Supernatural Wiki also said, "At the Rising Con Spain 2010, Jensen and Jared confirmed the project and that they'd seen and approved the artwork for Sam and Dean. They also said they would voice the first couple of English language episodes."

I will probably only watch the eps that Jensen and Jared voiced.

There is a cool preview for the animation. I just can't cope with the Japanese. Just reminds me of "Changing Channels"

Loved the interview, but I'm not sold on the anime. I think I'm too old for this genre, it's too hectic for me. And anime!Dean looks nothing like the real thing. I mean, who on earth came up with that ridiculous head of hair??

Yeah it's a bit hard to get your head around them looking like that...but they look kind of cute..:p
If they capture the spirit of them I can go with it. I may be interested in the new stories it's going to bring. Maybe.

I found the lowdown on the eps a while ago ...don't know if these are genuine though..I can't check on the website 'cause it's in...well..Japanese. My Japanese only runs to Moshi, Moshi and counting to ten. :D

Spoilered just in case. Some are original and some are new.

1.01 - Skin (Original Episode)

A demonic shape-shifter commits a gruesome murder. When the brothers investigate, the being borrows Dean's form to continue its killing spree.

1.02 - Roadkill (Original Episode)

"The highway's the only haunted once a year and we got 'til sunup to wrap things up!" Sam, Dean and a near-victim race the earth’s rotation to vanquish a ghost who kills on the anniversary of his death.

1.03 - Home (Original Episode)

After 22 years, Sam and Dean return to their childhood home. Now another beautiful young mother lives there - and, if Sam's nightmares are correct, she may be threatened by the same evil that killed Mary Winchester.

1.04 - Blood of Beast (New Episode)

Sam and Dean help out a young boy, who is being bullied by the older kids at school. We discover that the boy's father is actually a "peaceful" vampire who has sworn not to attack humans and survived by drinking cattle blood. The boy also has vampire blood in him but he is just not yet aware of his true nature.

1.05 - Ghost on the Highway (New Episode)
Sam and Dean are driving along the highway and are suddenly chased by a cop car from behind. They discover that there have been numerous unexplainable car accidents in the area. All accident involved a Chevy Impala. Sam and Dean have to investigate to prove themselves innocent. We discover that an evil spirit has taken the form of an Impala is trying to take revenge on the town.

1.06 - Bloody Mary (New Episode)

Back in 2004, when Sam was studying at Stanford. Sam hears about a suspicious death case occurred in Stanford from Jessica, a girl he's becoming friendly with. John and Dean smell something evil in the case and start investigating behind Sam's college life. They first presume that it is caused by a ghost called "Bloody Mary" but it turns out to be caused by a different ghost.

1.07 - Temptation of Demon (New Episode)

Maria, a faithful Christian is lured by a yellow-eyed demon to become its servant in return of curing her sick daughter. She refuses at first, but is quickly drawn in.

1.08 - Everlasting Love (New Episode)

Interesting. I've never really been into anime. I probably won't watch much of it, but I kinda hope it goes better than that Stargate animation thing went. Caught a little of that about a month ago- awful.

But the fact that I could recognize some episodes in that trailer could be good- they may be sticking close to those. Although the fact that I don't know Japanese won't help any.

Another couple of eps have been added:

1.09 - Poverty Spirit (New Episode)

Dean is taken over by a Japanese "poverty" spirit. He tries to rid himself of the spirit and discovers he must fight the spirit of "prosperity", because these two spirits are really two sides of the same coin.

1.10 - Moon Shine (Original Episode)

Sam and Dean investigate a murder in which the victim was killed by wild animals, suspecting that it was done by hellhounds. Later they find out that is was done by a werewolf.

Not that I've watched it..but I gather that it was a different studio with no connection to the orignal series, so maybe that's why. Unlike the Spn one, I think Kripke has a hand in this.

This looks absolutly horrible. I am sorry but I can't see Supernatural work as an Anime. Not only do Sam and Dean look ridiculous, the dark atmosphere of the show is completely gone. And I don't think they can recreate the tension or the horror of some scenes when everything look so unreal.

Those subtle emotions and facial cues are such an important part of the show, so I'm pretty sure those will be impossible to convey in animation. That will probably be their biggest challenge.

I don't know why, but that version of "Wayward Son" makes me giggle. I guess if you don't try to compare it too much, it may not be so bad. But some of it seems a little strange, like the glowing eyes, and is that guy with the beard supposed to be John?

Umm this show is weird, the first minute made me think that if the animation is the future of Supernatural I should quit while the show is still good.
The first minute basically shows me that not only are the creatures in this show really f-ed up, but they seem to have a sick fantasy besides just killing. i.e. the girl is in her bra and underwear?? what did this have to do with killing her. And I am watching as I type and WHAT THE HELL, the shifter is some crazy creature thing, this show is crap!
The first episode seems to be skin, but it doesn't have any of the normal parts besides it taking place in Missouri and that it is a shifter.

Usually what happens when an hour long show gets condensed into a half hour cartoon.

On the bright side it's not eye gougeingly bad as The Last Airbender. I still wanna draw and quarter Shalamaladingdong for that.

When Kripke was interviewed last week he said that he was excited about being able to show the things that wasn't possible to do on the TV show with their small budget. I think the new episodes will probably have storylines that aren't possible in the real show.

I could tell it was them, but there was something in their intonation that was a little weird. I now Jensen has voice-over experience, but I don't know if Jared does. I also don't like anime, so the whole sound-to-movement thing with the animation is always a little weird for me to get used to.

Maybe just b/c it was so short, and mostly sound effects not a whole lot of dialogue to get adjusted. I wonder how many more they're going to do.

I may be way too late on this, but the one great thing about this animation series is the fact that it is done in what is now considered traditional Japanese anime. It kind of mimics Hellsing (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0325547/) in its art and approach but also some of the earlier 90's anime. Its totally graphic but in that respect I do like the live action aspect of the regular SN. I always think these guys doing the set makeup and gore scenes have the best job. In fact I would love to splash blood on the wall once when camera is rolling.....dreaming...sigh
