RDA's age is starting to show in my opinion which is to be expected but it was weird seeing him in SGU actually looking 60.

It seems like only a few years ago he looked a handsome 40.

He'll always be Jack O'Neill in my book as well as MacGuyver. I mean heck, RDA has been playing Jack for over 14 years. I think that is his longest role he played.

He's gained weight, but that's expected. He's still awesome though.

The last episode he was in, that one line had both Telford and Young look at him like "And he made General?" Lol.

I would have to say since his retirement from SG-1, that SGU is the most he's played O'Neill. He's what? In every other episode so far?

I wish we had seen him that much in SG-1.

Yeah. The show just wasn't the same without him. In fact, I stopped watching it for a season or two before getting back into it again. Didn't like Mitchell that much, but he eventually grew on me.

Though I'm glad that RDA is playing *General* O'Neill a bit more. The snarky, witty General is funny. Usually you expect them to be mean spirited, too serious and shoot first, ask questions later business. Lol.

I agree about the "General" part. Though I adore Jack's humor, sometimes it isn't necessary or goes a little too far during tense moments. He seems to have a better grasp of his command role and is more serious in SGU.

I can't believe I missed this thread! After gushing yet again how much I love Jack's characterisation on SGU on yet another thread Ashizuri took pity on me and directed me here. Thanks so much hon! :)

Yes, I really missed him in S9 and S10. It didn't really help that I don't like Mitchell :p

I feel your pain ;)

I agree about the "General" part. Though I adore Jack's humor, sometimes it isn't necessary or goes a little too far during tense moments. He seems to have a better grasp of his command role and is more serious in SGU.

I couldn't agree more. As a huge Jack fan I love him in whatever way I can get him, but I much, much more prefer snarky but serious, smart, tough military professional of seasons 1-6 and SGU. I missed him in season 7 and some episodes of season 8 when he too often was replaced by comic!Jack (who sadly in minds of many fans morphed into classic!Jack. Err, no. Classic Jack wasn't a clown. At least not all the time. But maybe it's just me;)).

Anyway, SGU brough back Jack I love. He's smart, he's snarky but doesn't overdo humour, except one scene in Subversion, he's demanding, he's dressing down his subordinates like he used to do (Proving Ground, anyone?). You are right that it seems he settled into "being the Man". Looks like he took to heart all that he learned as the SGC's CO. I love it. :D

He seems to come along way from *Colonel* O'Neill. I mean the man was promoted to two stars after 1 yr and to 3 Stars after 4 yrs. Do you think we'll see a fourth star for Jack?

I don't think so. The way I see it, he was promoted because his position demanded it. I don't know much about the military so please correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Major General can order around other Major Generals? So he had to have been promoted to run HWS. But 4 stars are a huge deal and IMO the only way he'd get the fourth star is if the Stargate Program went public.

Yeah, but it's all down to interpretation of the word he used. He said it was "heady" which I took to mean intense and stimulating, but another person there thinks it was used in a negative manner, so, I dunno. Maybe I only heard what I wanted to hear. :(

I still think it's a matter of projecting fans' own opinions of SGU on their favourite actors. If someone doesn't like it then they'd be saying RDA doesn't like it either. But IMO was that really the case he'd be more outspoken about his dislike and wouldn't praise BW's creativity quite so much ;)

Not that I'm unbiased myself, since I adore SGU and would love RDA to like it too. :o

Also, I realise that as I'm not a native speaker my opinion/experience means little to nothing, but I've never heard "heady" used in a negative meaning.

That's what I was thinking, considering that he was pretty straightforward about ripping apart SG1 scripts in the beginning and how that created a fairly negative atmosphere between him and BW and his bad acting on Atlantis and a few other things. But like I said, I could totally be projecting my opinions on RDA. :o

Also, I realise that as I'm not a native speaker my opinion/experience means little to nothing, but I've never heard "heady" used in a negative meaning.

I like to keep a positive attitude, sometimes I'm disappointed but sometimes I'm pleasently surprised :)

SGU is between seasons now, I usually think of the hiatus as the big break in the middle of the season. I don't really know how far back the guest appearances are planned but I'm sure it takes some time

I would like to believe RDA likes SGU, I don't think he would continue working on it if he didn't, but I don't know if he does

EDIT: I looked up "heady," it seems it can have both positive and negative meaning *shrugs*

I didn’t recall seeing O’Neill in any of the upcoming scripts and asked SGU’s Costume Designer, Val Halverson, what was up. Was Richard Dean Anderson make a secret guest appearance on the show, an appearance so secret that even I didn’t know about it? As it turned out, sadly, no. O’Neill’s uniform was brought out of stasis for the set tours Rick was doing the other week. False alarm.

Duh, of course. But baring one line, add-libbed by RDA nonetheless, that's exactly how Jack was portrayed in SGU so I don't think we have anything to worry about. :)

As for dumb!Jack, some time ago I wrote a nice rant about fandom's perception of Jack in later seasons (http://forum.gateworld.net/threads/10397-Sam-Carter-Jack-O-Neill-Ship-Discussion-Thread?p=11657439&viewfull=1#post11657439) and what makes me very happy about SGU, is that because the show itself is fairly serious and doesn't try to be funny at all costs, there's also no pressure on O'Neill to be funny. And when he isn't weighted down by all the one-liners and the attitude "well, we've got to make people laugh and no one is as good at it as RDA", Jack O'Neill is an awesome, awesome, ass-kicking character. :D

Duh, of course. But baring one line, add-libbed by RDA nonetheless, that's exactly how Jack was portrayed in SGU so I don't think we have anything to worry about. :)I've been liking Jack in SGU since the pilot. Even most of "Subversion" was great. But. After he got "stoned"... I hadn't rolled my eyes that much since I did the 90210 marathon (please, don't ask :o). RDA has great sense of humor and all, but it did not fit with the situation they were dealing with.

And Jack was back to business in "Incursion" 1. Let's hope that'll continue. I really hope to see him in S2. He's a neat general. :D
