TJ had resigned her commission before they reached Destiny

    Remember?

How can Young have her under orders to return to the ship given that fact. She's been acting like a member of the military team but if you look at the paperwork she's not. She had every bit as much a right to stay as the other civilians. Young can't court martial her for failure to follow orders, she, according to records back home, is no longer an officer in the U.S. Air Force.

    Discuss.

    The paperwork hadn't gone through.
And I can't remember. Did she actually resign or ask for a transfer?

During "Air, pt 1" she has a conversation with Wray where Wray asks why she's leaving (hinting at the affair gone sour) and she says it's time and she wants to go to med school. Is there a version of the FLIP program for members of the Armed forces who want to go to Med School where they retain their commission and pay while they are in school in exchange for service when they get out?

Officers who decide to leave the military remain part it and its hierarchy until the paperwork has been gone through, and they finish at least the minimum term of service. Further the military can happily stop people in some situations from resigning, you can't for example in the middle of a tour of Afghanistan decide you want out and try and resign.

          TM6P,

I suppose it's a question of details then. I ot the impression she was leaving to go back when the Hammond made its return trip. Would that mean the paperwork had already gone through or that it would be processed when she got home? I don't know.

Do you agree that if the paperwork had gone through she would be as civilian as Rush?

She was offworld, deployed on Icarus and therefore on active military service. She was presumably planning on ending her career at the end of her current tour of duty on Icarus (hence her conversation with Wray) however going to Destiny ended that, she's still on active service and can't resign.

She wouldn't have left the military structure until she was back on earth and no longer deployed.

              TM6P,

Okay, what about the dramatic scenes in other SF shows like when Data resigned rather than submit himself to a procedure that might kill him. Could she do that, can that only be done in certain circumstances, or is that all a bunch of hooy?

To be fair, they're on the other side of the universe, if one of them doesn't want to serve any more then there's not much Young can do about it.

Err that's Star Trek, which firstly has no basis in reality, unlike here where they are depicting the USAF who also advise on the scripts, and also Star Trek was about as mildly military as you can get, they really based very little on any sort of real world military protocol or practices. In this case TJ can't resign her commission until she's finished her deployment, no matter how long that deployment lasts.

                    TM6P,

Got it. That's what I figured. No more relying upon fake UCMJs.

                        Laertes,

Yeah, he could. However, I wouldn't want to be the patient she was treating at gun point.

He doesn't have the balls. She could still refuse, even if he did anyway...

Why do sth like that if, like in "Faith", you now that the chick wants you and you can just say "I need you" and she'll change her decision
The fact is, the girl didn't choose to stay because she was military and it was her duty but because Young said that he needs her... whether or not he meant in in the way that he needs her as a medical officer or that he needs her as a woman

What Young actually said was "They need you", meaning the people on Destiny.
