Why is SGU not about science fiction anymore? Faith episode.

So the entire episode was about a fake planet probably made by some very smart aliens.

It seems like the drama is more a focus of the TV show than the actual science fiction.

Think about it, they spend half the show talking about conflict and who wants to stay on the planet but not the actual obelisk.

If this was SG1 they would find the obelisk and then Daniel and Sam would say a couple things about it etc. But all that was shown about the obelisk was a view from a shuttle, and a laser shooting into space.

What happened to the science fiction? IMO I think they should of explored what some random spire is doing in the middle of the planet.. Not sit around and talk about pregnancy and MTV topics.

    Anybody else a little disappointed?

I am disappointed, but not because of that. Yes, I'm sure Sam would have taken one look at the thing, then she could figure out it's a planetary phallus, going around impregnating other planets, giving birth to baby planets. And McKay would have hacked his way into the thing using his Alienware, only to have his mind blown and eyes pop out of his head when he realizes that it's really an Ancient Ancient outpost, created by an Ancient who traveled back in time after he spent 3 days on Destiny with the crew and decided he'd be cool about it and build them a home. But then...alarms would sound and C4 and BOOM!

There was a scientist that was checking out the obelisk the entire time, yet it was never shown on screen. Seems like SGU is no longer about science and more like survivor in space.

Exactly how is "survivor in space" not sci-fi?

"The only mission is survival", remember that.

              You really need an explanation?

It seems the show is more about them surviving than the science like SG1 was.

SG1 was a good mix 30% science - 70% doing w/e they were trying to do. And some episodes were the opposite, which most of the episode was about the technology and science.

SGU is like 5% science and the rest drama, and "Whos going with who" and "Who got pregnant"

The series is not science-fiction merely by virtue of being in space.

You do realize there is a "fiction" part to "science fiction?" There is no reason sci-fi can't include philosophical or ethical discussions. In this case the setting is what makes it sci-fi; I being on another planet, on the other side of the known universe.

No, SG1 was about technobabble, not science. Lots and lots of technobabble and sci-fi concepts do not necessarily make for good fiction, sci-fi or otherwise. People keep missing the point of sci-fi. And this is coming from someone who disliked Faith.

                        That carves it in stone.

SGU is now Survivor in space.

Nowai! It's more akin to Barbie Horse Adventure, in my humble opinion.

which is one of many routes that makes it science fiction
