It is an airship and I do not think it is a battleship. There is another floating around CP sports so I guess it might also be there for information gathering (traffic control, newscasts, sports etc)
He's like fire, ice and rage. He's like the night, and the storm in the heart of the sun.
He's ancient and forever. He burns at the centre of time and he can see the turn of the universe.
      And he's wonderful.

Perhaps the underside of the 'blimp' from the show's intro credits?

just looks more mechanical then a blimp we would have now.

When i first saw it, i thought it might be the underside of a Battlestar. But then i remembered the Galactica class (don't think the galactica's ship class was ever given a name) Battlestar's weren't built until after the Cylon war began. Which is atleast 6 years from current show time.

I'm not sure that was ever made clear. The miniseries just stated that Galactica was one of the original 12 Battlestars.

                  Doral:
                  world famous battlestar Galactica.
This ship, the last of her kind still in service, was
constructed over fifty years ago during the early days of
the Cylon War. Originally, there were twelve battlestars,
each representing one of Kobol's twelve colonies.
