Do you think Sgt. Riley will be the new gate tech guy for SGU, i.e. Walter/Chuck?
I reckon this Riley guy is a pretty likable guy, and i could used to him. What do you guy think of his character?

I immediately tagged him as a keeper when watching the premiere and I agree with you.

His skill with sarcasm was great when at the stuck door with James & Scott: "What happened to being smart? Do we? Do we really?"

TPTB could probably have saved a bunch of money and made him Dr. Rush.

I'm hoping they keep him. Every SG series needs a gate technician who's the butt of everyone's jokes.

I actually am a little worried about that guy's survival. Without knowing any spoilers (which obviously would possibly answer this conclusively) I'd peg him possibly a potential red shirt with what limited information we have.

He was brilliant. Besides the aforementioned sarcasm at the stuck door, he also said "you've gotta be kidding me" when they said all they had were powerbars, as if he just found out his office vending machine is in need of restocking.

Definitely a keeper.

EDIT: Just realized whom he reminded me of: O'Neill! Yes, his dry wit and calmness in such a stressful situation is exactly like Jack!

Spoiler about Riley

He's credited in the season finale, so its a fair assumption to say that he sticks around. Also, Joe said as much about the actor's flair for deadpan sarcasm. I'm fairly sure they'll keep him for the humour element of Universe.

Riley caught my attention immediately. He reminded me of Chuck and Maj. Marks but with cool backtalk. He's definitely a good find!

I think Eli will probably get his share of silly pratfalls after a while. I can picture Eli and Scott having a little brother/big brother dynamic.

For Riley, I can see him consistently butting heads with Rush (especially with Rush's comments about his understanding of Ancient) and some of the other scientists, like Franklin and Volker.

I know that in the 80's-90's USAF E-4's were called buck sergeants, maybe SGU has gone back to this practice...

Are there any AD/Prior Service/Military Buffs who could help me out on this one?

Well there's very little they are getting right on the military rank and structure at this point. I've just about given up trying to make any sense of it.

I mean, in just the latest episode, we hear Greer called Sgt. Unacceptable to a Marine to call a Master Sergeant a Sgt. It's not done and not appropriate.

And saluting without a cover on? Not ever done by a Marine.

*Had he put it on, it would have been acceptable. Had it not been a disgustingly bad salute.

It's simply part of a trend with SGU that's the only nagging downside to the show. The show is just completely lost in regards to the military even though it plays such an important part of the show.

We have a scene that cuts between where Walter is trying to dial Destiny, and Riley is in a crunch trying to dial some other planet, Riley simply dials, Walter does the whole "Chevron 1..." malarky...

They simply clap Riley on the shoulder when it works.

Jack O'Neill simply appears to cuff Walter on the head, "Did I ever tell you thats EXTREMELY annoying Walty-boy?"

If the show is operating on "real time" in a manner of speaking, Riley would have been born between October 2nd through the 4th in 1979.

I know this is a bit off topic, but im curious as to his rank... Im active duty military and this caught my eye in particular: Everyone calls him Sergeant (E-5), but he has Senior airman stripes on his collar (E-4)...

I know that in the 80's-90's USAF E-4's were called buck sergeants, maybe SGU has gone back to this practice...

Are there any AD/Prior Service/Military Buffs who could help me out on this one?

-Adren

I've been wondering this too. I got out about 2 years ago and from what I understand, having an E-4 NCO rank (buck Sgts) was discontinued in the AF around 1991. The AF is the only service not to have an E-4 NCO rank.

The modern Air Force has no "Buck Sergeant" anymore, so this does not follow reality. I think TPTB dropped the ball on this one, and also having everyone call Greer "Sergeant" even though the Marines never shorten ranks.

Well, everyone for the most part calling him Sergeant are AF who don't know better. ;)

That's because there are three airmen ranks and the rest are sergeants of some sort. But yes, it's an error. An E4 (Riley's insignia) is called a senior airman.

There's 4 Airman ranks:

E-1 Airman Basic (no stripes)
E-2 Airman (1 stripe)
E-3 Airman 1st Class (2 stripes)
E-4 Senior Airman (3 stripes)

Riley's a cylon!

In a subsequent episode, after the cylon revelation, Riley meets Eli in his quarters. In a hushed and serious tone, he says: "Eli, I have something to tell you. I'm not really a cylon. I'm a woman."

Riley then bolts out into the hallway and comes back...une femme.

Later on in the episode, he comes back to Eli again and says. "Eli, I'm not really a woman, I'm a horse."

Riley then spontaneously morphs into a horse, complete with an equine snort.

Eli is obviously shocked and virtually speechless.

Riley then says, "Eli, this time the truth. I'm a broom." Good old Hunter dons his final transformation and then plops to the floor with a thud.

Eli looks incredulously at the broom and says, "Frankly Hunter, I am supwised."

This bothered me too after I noticed it during his Kino video.

The best explanation I can come up with is that he was promoted just before the evacuation and hadn't gotten new insignia for his uniform yet. I doubt Icarus base had a BX and even if they did they're always running out of SSgt stripes. His new stripes/uniforms where probably in the cargo hold of the Hammond.

I know it was probably just a costuming error, but it bugged me enough to be distracting.

I guess it's possible that he hasn't been promoted yet and everyone is just calling him sergeant early, but you'd think at least one person would still call him Airman Riley or at least Staff Sergeant Select Riley.

Riley earned some serious respect points from me in this episode. He placed himself at significant risk to protect the ship and crew in order to fix that coolant leak. He was trying to fix the coolant leak. The piping ruptured and he was severely injured because of the backlash. Brody very likely fixed the leak and dragged Riley to the infirmary.

Eli: "Riley, man, what's going on?"

Riley: "I'm healed! Motor functions 100%, and now I can get back to work!"

Eli: "Okay... this happy Riley is really odd, but surprisingly pleasant. I say we put him in charge!"

Chloe: "I'll say! Look at him - all sexy and manly-like..."

Riley's grin widens as he skips along the hall. Women suddenly want to be with him, and men suddenly want to follow him in battle. He arrives in the Gate Room as it activates.

"Well this is weird," he quips.

Out of the gate comes... HOSTILE ALIENS! Then they shoot him with their phasers repeatedly until all that's left is a dark smudge on the wall and TJ going, "Damn, and I wasted all that medical equipment to save his life last time..."

Ok there is just one MAJOR detail that i can not stand about Riley... and it is only because i am in the Air Force lol.

He is definitely not a Staff Sgt. (Air Force does not have a Sgt. Rank.. you think the stargate series would get this freaking right now.. this is about as bad as the premiere episode of SG-1 where they had an officer wearing ssgt stripes as well!)

If i recall correctly.. Riley is actually wearing the rank of Senior Airman. Unless he was recently promoted and was unable to sew the rank on before Icarus was attacked! Now he is suffering from an identity crisis!

If someone else has pointed this out already then i apologize in advance.

Camasi
April 26th, 2010, 03:17 AM
Yes they do. Their are multiplr sergeant ranks

He is right.. he is definitely wearing the rank pin of a Senior Airman and there is no Sgt. rank in the USAF. When you say "there are multiple sergeant ranks" you are probably referring to staff sgt.. master sgt. tech sgt. chief master sgt. etc. There is no rank in the USAF that is simply "Sgt." That is only in the Marines and Army.

SGU needs to fix that soon. It is embarrassing.

JustAnotherVoice

The proper form of address for a Staff Sergeant in the USAF is "Staff Sgt." or just "Sgt" isn't it?

Riley's dead :(

and it TOTALLY SUCKS he was one of the best characters on sgu

The number of times Riley had near-brushes with death made me think that he was somehow going to make it back to Earth. The character's death was upsetting to me for a 3 big reasons.

First, he reminded me of a friend who died in a terrible accident almost 8 years ago. :( He too had that cool sarcasm and wit.

Second, Riley was one of the main reasons I watched SGU. Of the many characters they've got on the show right now, he was very high in terms of likability. The way he chose to go was admirable. The whole time he was in pain, he thought of the welfare of the crew. If only certain other characters could be so selfless. Some of the characters on the show are frankly downright unlikable at the moment, which brings me to reason number 3.

He didn't have to die. If Rush had decided to be truthful in the first place about finding the access code to Destiny's systems, the shuttle accident would never have happened. Gloria was correct that Rush's negligence was directly responsible for the accident. But Rush rationalizes the whole thing away, as usual, because he believes that Young is unfit for command. Well his negligence and concealment of the truth pretty much reveals that Rush himself is definitely unfit for command. It's ironic that he claims that that Young is mentally unstable. Young isn't the one talking to 2 people inside his mind right now. Rush is using "the greater good" as a pretext to use the crew and the ship to further his personal agenda. Incredibly selfish I think, which is diametrically opposed to Riley's caring for the crew even in his final moments.

Regardless of what I think or feel about what happened, Riley is gone. :( The only thing that can be done is to say that he will be missed.

I'm so sad about Riley. He was one of my favorite characters ever since the first episodes when his message/kino confession was essentially, "None of my relatives have even been outside of our home state, and now I'm on a spaceship in another galaxy. No regrets." It was so simple, and about twenty times more badass than anything any of the other characters said. I really wish that the writers had chosen to replay that rather than the pretty typical one they played tonight.

He will indeed be missed.

For those who have seen Aftermath...

this is a link (http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/show-patrol/2010/10/stargate-universe-exclusive-haig-sutherland-and-the-life-of-riley.html) to a very good article about Riley's fate and Haig Sutherland.

Riley! Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

He was an awesome background character. :(

This really upset me and is what has kinda made me a bit anti Rush. Just like at the end of last season when Young did not vent the atmosphere as he should have. Rush was out of line sending them. This one is solely his fault. I still kinda like him but he lost some major points with this one.

And I will miss HR. too bad

Like SG1 and SGA before it (and with SGU sort of), there is a chance of an 'alternate' Riley. He could be re-written in the show. In sci-fi, nobody really dies.

:/

Dude was my favourite supporting character from the get-go. I'll miss him tons. Saw it coming, but circumstances surrounding it were great (and both Rush and Young got a little guilt out of it), and as far as Stargate character deaths go, he got a pretty damn good one. No exploding tumours or anything. Just death by Rush being neglectful and Young being merciful.

"What happened to being smart?" - Hunter Riley, SGU Runtime: October 2nd, 2009 - October 5th, 2010.

Sadly Riley forgot his own statement. If you have a lot of poignent dialog early in an episode and are a secondary character under no circumstances do anything other than lock yourself in your room until the episode is over. It happend to Frasier, Beckett, and now Riley. :(

He wasn't just my favourite character - he was the only one I liked and could believe was a real person.

I won't be watching this episode on Tuesday (I'm in the UK) I'll be too annoyed about him being killed off to appreciate anyone's acting even if they're giving an award winning performance. This doesn't mean I'll never watch it if Sky repeats the season some time, though.

His death was a tragic and sad event, but bringing him back would only diminish it. Let him stay dead, and rest in peace.

I always loved his sense of humor. And I bet it's going to be so sad to watch pre-"Aftermath" episodes where Riley is. :(

He's got three memorials on the TV Tropes website.

Killed Off For Real (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/KilledOffForReal)

You have to click the open/close all folders to see the entry for him.

He's also mentioned in this topic - click the open/close all folders for the entry.

Big Breasts Big Deal (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BigBreastsBigDeal)

I left the best to last.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StargateUniverse

He's listed as an Ensemble Darkhorse (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EnsembleDarkhorse).

Generally, it's used to describe a side character making up part of the Ensemble, either a non-lead secondary character or a mere Flat Character, who can sometimes become unexpectedly popular with the fandom (sometimes, even more than the lead characters) depending on who and where the fandom is.

I didn't look far enough down the Stargate Universe page on TV Tropes. Riley also qualifies for -

Heroic Sacrifice (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HeroicSacrifice)

Mercy Kill (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MercyKill)

Power Perversion Potential (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PowerPerversionPotential)

Tear Jerker

He got a lot of tropes for a character who was only in a few TV/kino episodes.

I did as well. The great thing about the Stargate fictional universe is that it includes alternate universes. There will be many AUs where Riley's still alive and well so Riley fans can always go to one in their imagination.

I'm usually not a fan of alternate universe stories but this particular one was well-done and points toward some very interesting things with Dr. Franklin. And of course, Riley is alive and well. :)
