Writer: An unknown freelancer, produced by Rob Cooper
Director: Rob Cooper

---

Ok! Here we go, the first of 3 titles released today: Lucid. Below are past info on the episode:

We talked Tekkonkinkreet, Takashi Miike, and Minister Faust before I was called into the writer’s room to help spin a new story on another freelance script, this one a wonderful exploration of the Rush character. By lunch, we had the story broken

What episode was this about?”

Answer: […] Another story for the back half, this one is being scripted by a freelancer.

Today, we set aside an hour to talk stories – specifically, the back half of SGU’s first season. Okay, okay. I think that, this time, I’ve got it right. […] #14 is the Rush-centered freelance script that Rob will eventually jump on (as he’ll be assuming directing duties on this one). […]

Hey, everybody! It’s time to play “Guess the Upcoming Episode Names!”

Episode #14 shares a title with a song by God Module.

[…]

Another round of clues tomorrow. In the meantime, knock yourselves out.

Okay, it’s time for round two of “Guess the Episode Title”. Further hints to the titles of episode #14, #15, and #16:

One shares the name of a movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

Another shares the name of a television series.

Another shares the name of a software package.

Maybe this is a great way to make cross-overs too. They could make same scene at the Atlantis set, if Dr. Rush worked there. ;) But they can't use the old SGC gateroom set, because they changed it into the Icarus set. :o

I could imagine Lucy Lawless or Tricia Helfer as his wife. :D

Rob, meanwhile, put out his pass on Lucid (he’s renamed it Human and the change is a point of some debate) and it’s a terrific script – engaging, poignant, and, yes, mighty surprising. Rob will be assuming directing duties on the episode.

For all we know, 'Human' could fit with the episode better. We just have to wait and see. RCC wouldn't just change the title unless there was a reason for it.

Rob has been directing Human, [...]

And, since [Rob Cooper] was there, I told him how much we’d enjoyed the previous day’s dailies [of Human]. The film looks amazing. For his part, Rob had nothing but praise for the actors and, given their significant roles in this episode, Robert Caryle and guest star Michael Shanks in particular.

[Regarding the "grand prize" won by JES in Joe's recent photo caption contest]

That’s right! It’s your very own alien non-prop rock! And it comes with the following certificate of authenticity:

“This is a one-of-a-kind, limited edition “alien” non-prop rock from the set of Stargate: Universe, Episode #14, Human. Although similar in appearance, texture, and taste to the various other “alien” non-prop rocks that appeared in the episode, this one is special in that it is the one I, Consulting Producer Joseph Mallozzi, picked up off the ground while strolling through a darkened Stage 5 looking for a way out.

Furthermore, this rock may have been trodden upon by any member of the SGU crew from Director Robert Cooper to that guy with the baggy orange shorts that carries the ladder around, in addition to certain actors including, but not limited to: Brian J. Smith, Elyse Levesque, David Blue, and Jamil Walker Smith.

For external use only.”

Congratulations again, JES! Oh, and send me your address.

Joe included pics of his discovery of that glorious, holy rock (and thus, the sets for Human):

GW Interview with Michael Shanks:
http://gateworld.net/interviews/peacekeeper2.shtml

Spoilers for Human:

GW: Is it safe to assume that you're guest part in the second half of the season -- in "Human" -- [is] a flashback?

MS: Yes...and no. [Laughter]

It's hard for me to explain myself without giving away the entire context. But basically the way to put it in...it's kind of a flashback. But it's also the fact that the flashback is slightly different. Basically I play a figment of Robert Carlyle's imagination. And that's the only way I can put it without giving away too much.

http://gateworld.net/interviews/graphics/shanks07_04.jpg
Most, if not all of Shank's scenes in "Human" will deal directly with Dr. Nicholas Rush.

There's a few other characters in there that are also part of the same through-line. And that's where I was wondering. I read it and I went "I don't know where this is going!" My character kind of pops in and pops out and I'm not really understanding why. I'm like everybody else and going "OK, I'll have to wait and see."

Madwelshboy
November 16th, 2009, 11:12 AM
And you’ll be reprising your Stargate character on two more upcoming episodes of Stargate: Universe?
Yes. I made a cameo in the pilot and they’re keeping me alive to pass the torch. The next one coming up is titled Human, and back-references my character first initiating Dr. Rush (Robert Carlyle) into the Stargate program, but my character exists more as a figment of Dr. Rush’s imagination. And then in Subversion, near the end of the season, we’ll see myself and Richard Dean Anderson helping out with an investigation where sabotage took place back on Earth.

I had been wondering about the meaning behind what looks like a pretty pivotal part of the stargate wiki plot info. for human ... in that, Rush risks something w/the ships computer - meaning, what exactly? That he got back, and is using the chair somehow perhaps? . Just surprised theres no comments on this - least I didnt see any dealing with this, specifically. Course theres not much on hints either so ... I'm sure itll be good.

Update:

While Rush has been front and center to date, many of you are hankering for a peek at Rush’s motivations, his backstory, what potentially dark events from his past shaped him. Well, fans of the character won’t have to wait long for some answers. Human, episode 14, will explore the Rush character and, if not answer many of these questions, then at least offer some major hints to a troubled past.

God American’s and their shocking lack of geography. You should at least know what Glastonbury is, you know small English town with a big field where they have a renowned music festivals every year. No world class University there (or any universities for that matter). Rush states he grew up in Glasgow, and went to Oxford University.

well, hes pragmatic thats certainly true - but, and this is my reason for sharing this idea, hes also on a sort of 'mission' - o'neill in sg-1 [and daniel] used such devices before, and under time/safety constraints. The idea for this ep is something is wrong and rush risks something w/the ships computer....hence my guess.

I'm actually curious whats going to happen to franklin, if he doesn't survive his coma from the chair then its more likely I'm wrong. He might wake up fine w/memory of the transfer [anyone else think that - probably not?]...in which case Rush might try it ... why does he have flashbacks? hmmm

Anyhow its just fun to just guess and see if it pans out or not. I'm diggin this show.

Here's the episode summary, from http://tv.ign.com/objects/067/067811.html:

Disregarding orders, Dr. Rush links himself directly to the Destiny's computer via the neural interface chair, hoping it will reveal the code needed to control Destiny's flight path. Learning of this after the fact, Col. Young struggles with letting Rush risk his life in hopes he can find the code before lobotomizing himself or unplug the device, possibly killing him in the process.

Meanwhile, the ship has dropped out of FTL above a planet showing traces of a past civilization. With only six hours until they jump again, Lt. Scott, Eli, Chloe and Greer gate to the surface to explore the underground ruins.

A civilian doctor does not have to follow military orders unless in a military emergency. Also, when you have two huge personalities, who will obvuiously clash, one of them being on a nicotine low, surely instead of Young being a bloody idiot and shouting the odds at Rush, he could try asking, or at least wrapping the order in an illusin of politeness. Like whe Rush asks him to run any exploration orders by him first, Young does completely what a good officer shouldn't, and tries to impose authority and respect instead of earn it. Don't forget, one of them is an expert in Ancient technology, the other is an officer who should barely be allowed the rank of 1st lieutenant, never mind lieutenant-colonel.

He says Young is in charge of Destiny in Earth. And we don't need it spelled it out. Young is in charge of Rush for the same reason Shep ordered McKay around or why Jack could do the same to Daniel. When you join a military project as a civilian you agree to follow the military leader's rules

EllieVee

Except, as I've said previously, Young was simply in charge of Icarus. He wasn't in charge of the expedition. Can O'Neill, legally, put a military person in charge of something that the US military wasn't in charge of in the first place? Did the $4 billion go to the military or the research? I think it was the research so I think O'Neill's on shaky ground legally.

Actually, how Young approached that never made sense to me. All Rush asked was that if Young was going to issue an order, he check with Rush that it wasn't going to, for example, drain all their power (which, of course, we discovered, happened). It seems quite a sensible request and Young took no notice and continued to disregard warnings. While it all turned out for the best, at the time they couldn't have known that and as Telford said, 'You're telling me Rush didn't see this coming?' The exchange of looks on Johansen and Scott's faces clearly told him that Rush had seen it coming and had said so. Young is simply incompetent. No one with an ounce of commonsense would put him in charge of a wet firecracker let alone a group of people.

I agree that Young is currently in charge, but he is a terrible leader and doesn't have the moral character or self accountability needed to run an operation such as this.

The main problem is that nobody else with enough experience really is better suited to fill the role.

I'm betting on useless alien tech that will trap them, crisis, Rush being unable to help due to being attached to the chair, loads of yelling from Young at Eli, and an escape at the last minute before jumping back into FTL. The End.

I was more afraid...
They would touch something while underground which would make all the ruins crumble on them. At a certain moment, Scott would get caught under some rocks and would yell. "Leave me, Leave me!! Its too late for me." "Chloe, tell Scott jr that I love him." Chloe cries.

Didn't Eli said they were 0 for 3 for the close encounters of the third kind on the MGM trailer? There must be somebody down there.

Yes, but that went in one ear and out the other for me due to not understanding the sporting metaphor. At least, I assumed it was a sporting metaphor.

That's actually a mixed metaphor. Allow me to unpack:

The "0 for 3" part is indeed from sports - it means you have hit the ball 0 times out of 3 tries (or won 0 out of 3 games). The "close encounters of the third kind" refers to the movie, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", which deals with alien encounters/abductions. Close encounters of the third kind mean encounters where humans actually interact with aliens.

My thinking is that Eli is referring to the sand grain/particle alien (encounter #1 - dead guy in the hall that shoots at it in "Water"), the flying squid (encounter #2 - kill lots of people in timeline #1 of "Time"), and the blue rubber-suited aliens (encounter #3 - grab Rush and Chloe, shoot the heck out of Destiny, "Space"). They aren't doing so good with alien encounters.

Hello, have we met? I'm an incredible dork.

I know we're going to get a look inside what makes Rush tick in this episode, and we'll likely find out that he was once a more happy individual.

What I really wonder is if we'll begin to see some changes in his character moving forward, will he begin the journey of redeeming himself?

He may never take that path, although I'm pretty sure we'll get that from Greer if not Greer and Rush (which I would prefer).

No way, that's not the kind of thing anyone likes to see about someones late wife.

I see 3 options (I could be way off):
1) They were happy and very much in love and her death changed him
2) They were happy and in love and her sickness changed him trying to find a cure, but he couldn't in time
3) She loved him and he loved her but he was engrossed in his work and she slipped away and now he lives with that guilt

From things Carlyle has said in interviews, I think it's likely number three.

Yeah I agree that 3 is the scenario that makes the most sense...it also offers a chance for him to eventually forgive himself and grow as a character. I love seeing characters grow.

While there are plenty of things I dislike about Young, Rush, Chloe and to a lesser extent the other characters I do like the fact that almost all of the characters have room for self-growth which can make the series grow each season!

The program MUST be the worst kept secret in the world, because WE know about it.

We even get to watch their mission documentaries.

Somehow, I don't think the SGC knows there's a problem with their communications scrambling device - it's not working too well.

Yeah, I think letting Wormhole X-Treme go to air 10 seasons might've caused problems. Every fan of that show would be wondering, "I wonder if this is some plausible deniability for the real thing!"

It is a lecture hall in the Hennings Building at UBC - either room 201 or 202 - a building where I hang out pretty much every weekday. This episode is going to be so freaky. Rush and Daniel are walking around my lecture halls!! It's real!! It's all real!!

It's something I love about shows filmed here: getting to see all these places that are supposed to be somewhere else

I'm psyched that he figures out it's not just a down loader, but a overall two way interface with Destiny. Either that or he just wakes up one day thinking he'll just go 'all in'.
If so, it's interesting that Destiny's interface with him, uses direct memories. It's quite obvious Rush is figuring it out, in the trailer he's working on a code. More and likely the code to unlock Destiny.
So does he get the code? I fraking hope so. Does he give it to Young? hmmmmmmm

Then that begs the question where were you when this episode was filmed?

Maybe PG's just kidding with us. There's a whole pile of studenty looking people in the classroom.

Where'd all this come from? There's not enough spoilers about this episode to know any of that.

Why, I was right there, jel. In fact, I think you can see me in one of those pics...

...Ok, that's not true. I'm

just kidding with

you guys. Well, not entirely. "Human" was indeed shot at UBC and part of it does take place in the Hennings Building. Unfortunately, the episode was shot during the summer when I was on break. I did hear about it and ended up going there and stalking the production for a whole day.

I ended up talking to a production assistant standing about 10 feet away from Robert Carlyle. That was pretty cool. :D

EDIT: Here's the thread that talked about all this:

When do the sneak previews usually come out for episodes? Obviously, I'm hanging out for this one. :D

They've been released as early as Saturday (Faith). Just depends on the mood Syfy is in. I noticed last night that the episode trailer over on Syfy no longer has the option to be embedded on a blog. Wonder why?

EllieVee

Can you still embed the YouTube one?

Not that I mind seeing Daniel but why would the SGC send an archaeologist to recruit a physicist? Wouldn't it make more sense for Sam to recruit him?

EllieVee

According to a spoiler I read, yanna, Daniel has some sort of connection to Dr Rush.

I'm not actually convinced by the spoilers or by the preview that it is Daniel.

Not the official ones from MGM at stargate central: http://www.youtube.com/stargatecentral#p/u They've taken the ability to embed -- oh, wait! Thank you for asking, because I just discovered if you don't go the stargate central link, but do a search at you tube for the specific video (and it's at stargate central) the individual link has the embed code.

For instance this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iR1zHKhlHyU has the embed code for kino 23

Whereas this link: http://www.youtube.com/stargatecentral#p/u/0/iR1zHKhlHyU doesn't.

How ... odd!

Shhhh...don't tell them!

I used to use another account, but that had my last name in it, so I changed to this one. Seems like you cannot use a nickname on YouTube. Stupid, cause otherwise it was so easily linked with my Google account. :) I'll PM it to you. ;)

While Rush is very flawed, I'm a huge fan of his character.

That being said, I'll be curious to see his "Human" brings a few more people into the pro-Rush fold or at least softens the anti-Rush movement.

Usually background episodes explain why someone does what they do, maybe that will help. It may also give of hope for growth. I think the alien mind probe, plus this chair and a budding friendship with Chloe could be a catalyst for Rush to become a decent "Human" although he'll always have a darker side (which is cool with me!)

I agree. the only reasons I watch SGU is for Greer and Rush. I would love to see more background on Rush. We know he isn't some posh Uni grad who is obsessed with his own genius like McKay, but rather a working class grunt who worked his way to the fore. I want to know what part of his life turned him into an arrogant ****** :D And more about how his wife died/went missing/ascended/tunred into a clown

Agreed. Usually working class people that make it big aren't quite so bitter, it'll be interesting to see what caused that within him.

I also agree about Greer, I hope we get some background info on him at some point...but it won't be today!

I hope you're right! I think for those of us who enjoy the multi-layered character known as Nicholas Rush are in for a real treat as a few more layers are revealed...plus we'll possibly get some Destiny interaction with Rush using the chair!
