FanFic? (Is that really a question?)

I was just wondering why most of the people write/read/consume Stargate Fan Fiction. Is it mostly ship, or filling in plot holes or scenes or events that you found missing? Do you write them for yourself of for an audience? And adult fanfic is that like literary porn?

People write fan fiction because they feel they can contribute to this section, and maybe entertain some people using their spare time. That's certainly what im trying to do.

Ok, so you do it for the purpose of an audience.

I read and write because I enjoy it. I've exhausted all the episodes and I need more!

I have lots of ideas to share and I love getting under the skin of the characters. Putting them in situations and figuring out how they would react.

It can be anything. Tags (missing scenes or a continuation of an episode) or something completely original - like a new episode or novel. Personally I write most genres as Stargate is open to just about any situation and I like to play!

Although I only focus on one character (Rodney, because I like him the most )
Do you write them for yourself of for an audience?
Me me me! There's no point otherwise. Sure, if you're writing a book which is going to be published for monetary reward then I imagine you'd write for the audience. As fanfic is working for free, then it wouldn't be any fun if your only aim was to please the readers.
And adult fanfic is that like literary porn?
        Oh yes! Smut. Is. Good.

I write it because I didn't want Stargate to end, plain and simple. I enjoy continuing the story of my favorite team of heroes and the galaxy they live in, and that's enough for me

It's individual, usually. Some salivate over a character, others come to fanfiction with a bucket of retcon cement to try and fix plot holes, others still just want to keep the buzz going, so they power up that interstellar Ferris wheel for one more ride.

Basically, fanfiction is an attempt to introduce some interactivity into the show.

Do you write them for yourself of for an audience?
Oh, that is the million dollar question of writing, isn't it? Do you write for yourself or do you write because you want someone to read it? I say both. The writer has a story to tell, but it takes two to tell a story- someone has to tell, and someone else has to listen.

And adult fanfic is that like literary porn?
It's worse, most of the time.

I like to read it because (amoungst a whole lot of other reasons) the writers put the characters in situations that we know would happen, but don't get shown in the episodes for various reasons.

Some people have fun writing to fill in gaps in the show. 'what happened after jack got home in shades of grey?' 'what happened during that week that jack sam and teal'c were marooned between seasons 3 and 4?'

to to delve into a character's mind. what did sam think when she got promoted? how did daniel feel after shau'ri died?

or maybe it's to explore a what if

what if sam hadn't have visited cassie so they never knew about jolinar and she got off world? what if sam hadn't figured it out and jack remained marooned with maybourne? what if teal'c hadn't been deprogrammed in threshold?

sometimes you just take the characters adn put them in another setting and play with them, like an alternate universe.

basically, it's fun to play with them and something that a lot of people enjoy doing

For me it's a mix of filling in 'missing' bits and exploring ideas and areas that the series couldn't. I love the idea of expanding the Stargate 'verse, no matter how unofficially or minutely, although personally I prefer to deal with either minor characters or entirely new ones who can offer new perspectives but still fit into the grand scheme of things.

Ships don't interest me unless they're the type with hyperdrives...

As for adult fanfic, I couldn't say - I've never read any. I'd like Stargate and the dirtier parts of my mind to stay very, very separate lest the former become irreversibly contaminated by the latter.
And now it's time for one last bow, like all your other selves. Eleven's hour is over now... the clock is striking Twelve's.

The former is irrevocably contaminated with the latter in my mind ( or maybe ) but thats because I haven't really seen women in like 6 months and SG-1 has way too many attractive women in it.

For me it's a way to filter out my addiction, actually When I've reached a certain level of addicitivity (and always when the show is off the air, wherther between season or cancellation) I join forums, read fanfic, end up writing it...

(which also epxlains why I haven't written SG fanfic in years...)

I'm sure there are as many answers to this question as there are people to answer it. But for me it's like this.

I read fanfic out of a love of the characters/show and a desire for more stories about them. Sometimes it's about finding a fic to flesh out an episode or fill in gaps, but usually it's just a desire to a good story. I read because when you find the really good fanfics - I mean the really good ones - they can surpass the show itself simply because there are certain stories that can't be told on television.

I write it for much the same reasons. A love of the characters, concepts, and universe. Because it's fun. Because of a desire to tell an excellent story, explore those areas I always desperately wanted to see on screen, and share it with others who perhaps always wanted to see it, too. And I write because I love the craft.

I used to write and read fanfiction, though I don't do it anymore ( at least the writing part ) so I guess I'm semi-qualified to answer your questions. Not about Stargate fan fiction, but fan fiction in general.

For me, it's mostly about seeing more of the characters I like, learning more about them and exploring them, going on adventures with them and having fun with them. I also like(d) alternate universes where the things I didn't like in canon are fixed ( usually things happening to a favourite character ) or alternate decisions and the paths that led from there. In my old fandom, slash was a big part of it. ( And about 10 years ago, I read a lot of Daniel/Jack slash. ) I'm not really interested in heterosexual relationships unless I myself am involved. ( Long story, really. ).

When it comes to writing, of course being part of the universe I love is part of it. Escape from real life to somewhere I have more control and pay less of a price for making the wrong decisions. I never write Mary-Sues though, and rarely original characters. ( Actually, being afraid of writing a Mary-Sue, I instead err in the opposite direction and make them so bland and uninteresting that they're pretty much me, and thus so useless that I end up not writing them at all. ) Instead I focus on the things I have in common with the characters, or that I can understand even though I don't share it, and write that.

Ideally, writing was first and foremost for myself. Of course it's always fun to share with other fans, to be appreciated, or even to be a part of a common creative effort like a roleplaying game. Sadly, I ended up putting too much pressure on myself to perform to the standards of truly elite writers/roleplayers ( ok, some of the pressure was from them too, but I was the one who actually chose to try and play in their game ) and seeing how much other people wrote, that the fun was totally sucked out of it all and I haven't been writing fiction since about 2006. Always remember, the pleasure of writing has to outweigh the pain, or you'll end up hating it!

I think, unless you're actually getting paid for your creative writing ( and preferrably even then ) you need to write for yourself first of all. Because writing fanfiction is a labour of love, not a job, and when it becomes a job ( due to external or internal pressure ) the love fades.

Adult fanfic can be porn, yes. Some of it very well-written, much of it pure crap. ( Though due to the company I was keeping, I only got to read the good stuff, so I can't say how bad "bad" gets... ) But I guess it can also mean "including adult subjects/words" like drugs and graphic violence and words that may or may not be blocked from Gateworld.
