...And title #2. Wow! Two in a row tonight! Possibly!

And speaking of character moments - today, I read Brad’s finished version of Darkness and Light. This one has got me very excited as well, particularly for the remained climactic sequence.

http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/2009/04/21/april-21-2009-advice-and-observation-cookies-in-life-we-are-all-winners-although-some-of-us-are-clearly-bigger-winners-than-others-more-scripts-on-deck-rock-em-sock-em-robots-on-hoth/

I'm gonna assume that it's 2 episodes (perhaps a 2-parter), since it's already been established that every episode in the 1st season will have 1-word titles.

EDIT: Turns out, this is Part 2 of what used to be "Fire". So, all the significant updates for Fire are:

Brad has laid claim to #4, a story that is right up his alley”

http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/2008/11/11/november-11-2008-spinning-stargte-universe-day-one/

Brad is working on Fire and, from what I hear, is very happy with the way it’s coming along. It’s a great story and, as I’ve already said, right up Brad’s alley. Looking forward to reading the first draft. This episode will see a certain fan favorite retake the director’s chair.

http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/2009/02/12/february-12-2009-pre-production-update-and-those-things-better-left-said-or-unsaid/

Reading "Fire"...BW sure can spin a yarn. Can't wait to start seeing cuts.

http://twitter.com/martingero/status/1302613341

Brad’s script, Fire, is also out and it is pure BW: action, humor, and enough angst to trigger an anxiety attack in even the most composed of viewers. The scene about halfway through with the characters when the thing happens (sorry, I can’t be anymore specific) is a real nailbiter!

http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/2009/03/13/march-13-2009-good-news-bad-news-scripts-secrecy-and-mailbag/

(Is this where the new cliffhanger is? Could be!)

AMZ also writes: “I know a lot of Universe info is under wraps at the moment, but I was wondering, when you said Brad’s script Fire had “enough angst to trigger an anxiety attack…”, did you mean angst as in Serious Conflict Angst or more the Rebel Without A Cause/A Lot of Whingeing From Characters Angst? Or was it more a XXXXX type of angst?”

Answer: All three.

http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/2009/03/14/march-14-2009-a-non-celebrity-guest-blog-your-book-of-the-month-club-reminder-and-an-extra-chunky-mailbag/

Yesterday, I was over on Stage 2, watching Peter DeLuise direct the shuttle sequences in Fire. Boy, that shuttle is a beauty. Someone referred to it as “a puddle jumper on steroids”. Anyway, enjoy some shots of Peter in action.

The shots in question

Later in the afternoon, we sat down to watch the director’s cut of Fire. Now I usually dread watching cuts after 4:00 p.m. as, late in the day, my mind tends to wander while my eyelids seem to put on about six pounds a piece, but this episode was absolutely riveting. GREAT - except for the fact that it’s about twenty minutes too long, and this isn’t even taking into consideration a bunch of scenes that Brad actually wrote but had to cut at the script stage for fear that the episode would run long - which it has anyway. And yet even though the running time is long, the episode is tight, moving along at a surprisingly brisk pace. So congrats to Director Peter DeLuise on his triumphant return to the Stargate franchise.

Ytimyona writes: “Any chance Fire might turn into a 90 minute episode? If it’s a tight script, why not? I hate to see significant parts of the story disappear because of a time limit! If all 20 minutes end up being cut, any chance it’ll be put on the special features of the DVD (like with Morpheus in SG-1)?”

Answer: We’re looking at all possibilities. Like I said, the episode is pretty damn tight and even feels like it’s missing a couple of scenes and sequences I would love to see.

Juralas write: “In the episodes you direct, will you make a cameo appearance and/or name any minor characters after 21 Jump Street characters like you did in the previous Stargate series?”

PDL: Yes. I did something on this episode of SGU that is more abstract than usual.

Shirt ‘n Tie writes: “ [...] Second: I know it’s a bit premature, but will you be doing the Audio Commentary for your ep? Third: Is it true you hung onto the Anubuis’ Super Soldier Outfit? Thank you for all of your talents in the Stargate Franchise over the years, and continued success.. and B-I-G-G-E-R!!”

PDL: [...] Re: commentary. It IS premature, but I guess so. I don’t have the Super Soldier Outfit, did I joke about that? Black is very slimming and I dig the cod piece…

Blaine Nielsen writes: “Ooh, ooh?question for Mr. DeLuise:?after taking a break for the Stargate production, last one being Family Ties, how does it feel to be back??? And will we see you around more often?? More Commentary on episodes with Gary Jones???Thanks for dropping by”

PDL: My episode of SGU was a blast. I hope there is more to come including the commentary… with Gary… that would be so cool.

"Darkness and Light" sounds more like one title to me, based on this context. If it was two episodes, wouldn't Joe say "Brad's scripts"?

And "this one"?

Maybe just 2-part, but Joe refer to one big ep.

Well, Kazoop, I understand what you're saying. ;)

I just posed a question on JM's blog about this so hopefully he can shed some...light...on this. However, JM has also said previously that it looks like every episode in Season 1 will have a 1-word title, so...yeah, I'm not sure.

I guess we'll wait and see.

Brad Wright shifts gears after putting out both Darkness and Light, looking to hammer down the story for episode 13.

That they've used that title before? Which is 1)Not very original, 2) confusing and 3) Wasn't a particularly good title to begin with.

jenks
April 24th, 2009, 04:41 AM
1) It's a word from the English language, of course it's not.
2) For who?
3) You haven't seen the episode and have no way of knowing.

That they've used that title before? Which is 1)Not very original, 2) confusing and 3) Wasn't a particularly good title to begin with. That's a bit silly, don't you think?
Look at how many titles are identical for numerous shows. Heck, there must be dozens of "Crossroads" and "Family Ties" in the sci-fi genre alone, let alone everything else. So, a one-word title...sure, chances are it's been used before. But, as Jenks said...it's a word in the English language. Just like Air, Fire, Water and so on...
And I'm one of the people who don't particularly care about the title of an episode. That's why I love "24". Well, one of the reasons, anyway..."6AM-7AM". BANG! We have our title.

PG15 also writes: “Your answer to my second question aides me on my quest to piece together Season 1 of SGU; it is a great quest, full of peril, danger, and inconvenience. […]

Anyways, everything up to “Faith”, 113, seems clear cut except for the maelstrom that is Fire vs. Water vs. new episode. […] But wait! There’s more! You said that Peter DeLuise was directing Darkness and Light! But the only episode he directed this year, so far, was Fire! […] In addition, one of the actors recently twittered that they were shooting some extra scenes (or the last scenes) for…wait for it…FIYAH!! […] Episode 13 is Faith, episode 14 is unknown, and episode 15 belongs to Marty G. You just denied Darkness being episodes 16 nor 17, which means that Darkness can only be episodes 18, 19, or 20, while Light can be those episodes, as well as episode 17. […] Thus, only one thing makes sense:

Fire, being so over the time limit, was split into 2 episodes. Those 2 episodes were renamed Darkness and Light.

Question: Am I right?”

Answer: Yes, you are. Congratulations, Columbo.

Update:

Lots to watch at work these past few days: [...] Brad’s cuts of Darkness and Light. [...] Meanwhile, Robert Carlyle tears it up big time in the Darkness and Light two-parter. Love his “for a fact” scene. Truth be told, there are incredible performances throughout these two episodes: Minga Na and Justin in the red room scene, Peter Kelamis and Patrick Gilmore in their kino scenes, Jamil’s stoic warrior acceptance, Elyse in Chloe’s farewell, and Alaina Huffman’s turn as T.J., a character whose cool professional exterior belies genuine charm and a wicked little sense of humor.

One of the things I’m really loving about the new series is the colorful cast of characters: Rush, Young, Armstrong, Scott, Telford, Wray, Eli, Chloe, T.J., Greer, James, Brody, Franklin, Volker, Park, Spencer, Kane and Riley. I told Brad that Darkness and Light do a wonderful job of offering the viewer insight into these varied individuals thrown together by circumstance, glimpses of their respective personalities only the kino can capture.

Press Release:

“LIGHT”

Air Date: Friday, October 23, 2009 @ 9 PM

The Destiny is still without power and an attempt to alter their collision course with a star has failed. The situation is now critical. A plan is born to abandon ship using the last working shuttle, with the hope that one of three planets in close proximity will be habitable. Although this strategy initially raises the crew’s spirits, it is short lived when Col. Young (LOUIS FERREIRA) announces there is only room for seventeen people and a lottery will determine who goes and who stays. Stunned by the implication of this news, everyone considers their fate. Some, including Dr. Nicholas Rush (ROBERT CARLYLE) and Col. Young, opt to stay on board. Others, determined to survive, vie for a seat on the departing shuttlecraft.

In the short time that remains, alliances are forged and others damaged while Eli (DAVID BLUE) tries to create a message in a bottle with the aid of a Kino. But, unbeknownst to all, forces are at work that no one could have foreseen.

So according to previews for the next episode, 15 of the crew will be chosen to settle on one of those planets. Does that mean that they'll be stuck on that planet forever? I think it's pretty obvious that Destiny will survive and will go into FTL before the Destiny crew can retrieve those on the planet.

They had one line together and they're at it already. That's some quality character development from the writers. Maybe if Scott had a real main role and had some charm or personality.

Yes agree the promo gives way too much away. However, we already knew that they would make it as Scott is still in the next episodes, just as is Rush. However, I do regret watching the promo, but it's still my own fault as I know I do not want to see it because it gives too much away as usual and then I still watched it. :o The Scott/Chloe thing is more a dead giveaway. If they hadn't spoiled that, then now we wouldn't know that. Photos of that have been showing up for weeks now. That's worse than them escaping from the sun, I think, as everyone already knew thay would happen.

Yeah, but it might be more because Chloe is manipulating Scott and the situation is just so at the point of the needle. There might be more to it than we think/suspect now. I do feel we'll have to wait for the ep to air to judge that.

Looking at the pictures at the official website we also see

that Sergent from the Kino videos is flat on his back between Young/Greer and a group of people. There are several photos which indicate he "speaks up" at the lottery assembly and gets knocked down by Greer. Another example of a future mutiny?

And

We see the core group (Young, Chloe, Greer, TJ, Eli, etc) sitting around a table at the mess laughing and having a good time until Rush walks in. Then they all seem to clam up until Young approaches Rush. It should also be noted that the lighting seems different on these photos, and in photos from the hallways, as if the ship is fully powered up now.

Young's behaviour kinda took me aback.
Like he doesn't want to have anything to do with the problem and refuses to take responsibility. I think Ming-Na(no idea what her character is called) is right when she's reproaching him for his unwillingness to choose. Of course it's hard making such decisions but that's what the leader is for, no?
I can't get to like this whole lottery idea. I like Young but this... :weiranime34:

Perhaps he feels he has no right to choose who is more valuable than others. Most of them are the wrong people so who knows who could end up contributing the most.

Also I thought it was clear [EDIT] well not clear but a distinct feel[EDIT] from that the Wray wanted to get in by default and Young wasnt having any of it.

I think I might prefer death to life on a planet with 14 other people I might dislike.

It seems like Young might think Wray (Ming-Na) is attempting a round-a-bout way of getting on that shuttle, but to me, it sounds like that might not be her goal in this scene.

They aren't trying to repopulate the Earth here; they just want to live for another few years.

Hey I wonder if Rush knows exactly what the ship is doing and isn't letting on so no one blames him for allowing the ship to do something so dangerous. Nah...

Hmm, what if they do realise soon enough that the ship is doing this on purpose (I'm assuming it is, but it makes the most sense to me) but still want to get off the ship because the refueling maneuver is insanely dangerous?

They had one line together and they're at it already. That's some quality character development from the writers. Maybe if Scott had a real main role and had some charm or personality.

That must be it. It certainly couldn't be a relatively useless (for now) character trying to up her chances of survival by getting nice and cozy with somebody she's friends with. I mean honestly, who do the writers think they're writing for? Somebody staring death in the face and looking for any way to try and survive?

Back to speculation, perhaps at the last moment they figure out for themselves some way of harnessing the sun's power to charge the Destiny and manage to jump to FTL moments before they are baked in a fiery death (and before the Destiny stops functioning entirely because Ancient technology can only remain safely operational up to 4000 degrees Kelvin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33jk7MXZJeU)) and at the moment they throw the switch that sends them to safety, they hear from the Destiny's speaker system:
What are you doing? Stop it! I-i-i-i-i-... Weeee are pleased that you made it
through the final challenge where we pretended we were going to murder you. We are very very happy for your success. We are throwing a party in honor of your tremendous success...

Does the party involve a large novelty cake with an ancient belly dancer popping out to entertain the boys?

Speaking of Greer. I really liked the goodbye clips spoilers on io9.com
http://io9.com/5388002/sgu-cast-says-their-final-goodbyes-in-new-clips

And Greer in the kino episode was great too.
http://au.tv.ign.com/dor/objects/14276047/sgu-stargate-universe/videos/sgu_clip1_102109.html

I wonder what he'll do in this episode. :)

Beware the beast Man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him; drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death.

Here is the latest link to 45 images from "Light". Lots of them show Mathew Scott and Chloe Armstrong spending some "quality" time together. I wonder how Vanessa James and Eli Wallace will handle it...

It seems to me like things won't be what they look like. I'm getting the impression that Chloe is manipulating Matt to get a ride on the shuttle away from the ship.

Tune in tonight on "As the Spaceship Flies".........

My thought on the matter: The ships coarse isn't off, it plotted itself directly at the star to recharge itself. I am guessing there is some kind of solar gathering system built into Destiny.

Obvious it'll end up being (Scott's) death by Kino pelting, referring back to the crazy malevolent dodge balls in a Warehouse 13 episode.

Why not?

Oh, I dunno....

How about that they are needless and make both women look like tramps...

In fact the latest one makes Chloe look awful. Eli is the one on the ship who has been honestly being her friend and helping her, and she sleeps with Mr. Gigolo.

Or even better she "feels closer to Scott than anyone else"? Why? He's a typical TV hunk.

food and water is a no brainer. the ship likely has replicator beamy thingies to make food out of something, water is recycled and made from hydrogen and oxygen.

and i bet that there's some sort of store room/make clothing out of materials high tech thing that they'll eventually find

that or the n ext planet the destiny drops out next to will have edible stuff on it that they can harvest
