This episode is a good one.....I love how Frasier refers to Teal'c as Mr Teal'c. That made me laugh :)

Seeing Daniel as one of the Touched was quite funny too. Ooh, and the bit with Teal'c and O'Neill! Teal'c's reaction is just hilarious....

The eyebrow thing must be a characteristic of the alien retrovirus.

And what was the deal with the light and dark side, perpetually day and night?
Shouldn't the planet be spinning? You gotta love script writers, they make you believe anything is possible.

The science isn't quite as dodgy as it seems. Some planets spin at the same rate as they rotate. They keep the same face to the sun, just as our moon always keeps the same face to the Earth. Other planets have rings that cast shadows.

The science isn't quite as dodgy as it seems. Some planets spin at the same rate as they rotate. They keep the same face to the sun, just as our moon always keeps the same face to the Earth. Other planets have rings that cast shadows.
How believable the science is depends on how much you know about that science. When I was in 5th Grade I was absolutely obsessed with (planetary) astronomy, and so this episode came off rather silly to me on scientific level.

When planet spin at the same rate as they rotate, the sun would heat one side up to several hundred degrees, and the dark side would be several hundred degrees below zero. No higher life forms possible.
There would have to be *many* big chunks (moon size) in the rings to obscure the sun for a longer time. Also, rings imply that the planet got an immense gravity (because if not, several moons would have developed). Both appears not to be true for this planet.
This planet has an atmosphere, which disperses light, so there would never be something like *snapswithfingers* it's bright when the sun rises.

Spoiler S6 Paradise Lost

But the science is necessarily not important to my enjoyment of an episode. Paradise Lost was also rather silly with the "Oh, they're on the moon", but still it's one of my favorites from S6. :)

This episode was just on Scifi yesterday and I thought that I saw something odd and was wondering if any onw else saw it too. In the scene where they are just about to ambush Daniel and his Touched 'friends', I swear that I saw a dart on Jack shoulder, then they showed Daniel then they went back and it was gone.

Have I completely lost my mind or did I actually see this?

I saw that too. You weren't crazy. He probably had an extra dart in a shoulder pocket. After he probably shot Daniel or the girl, he reloaded his dart gun. That why we didn't see it the second time.

Good episode all around. Warning, LOADS OF SPOILERS for related ep.

What was good:

a. Janet. Another girl! Go her! :) I also found the "Mr. Teal'c" business hilarious. That being said, I am glad that they didn't keep that as a running thing--it would've gotten tiresome awfully fast.

b. The infamous locker room scene. That was funny! Although I've found out that parental units have an annoying tendancy  to freak out if they walk in on you watching this ep...and happen to walk in on that one scene. Talk about impressive fireworks...ouch. That took explaining. Anyway, the scene was funny--and confirmed me shipper suspicions! (which is of course the main thing ;) ).

c. Jack beating the crap out of Daniel, and of course the "she tried to seduce me"/"you poor man" dialogue.

d. "Lucy! I'm home!" 'Nuff said.

e. "Daniel, you dog!" See above.

f. The "black tank top" comment. Can you say, priceless?

What was bad:

a. I don't buy that "it's how early man reproduced so we can't interfere" thing with Melocia. It seemed awfully crass for Mr. Catches the Girl Who Was Going to Jump Off a Cliff And Gets the Whole Team Captured (aka Danny in "Need"). Look, it bugged me.

b. Tuplo. He drove me NUTS.

Umm...drawing a blank here.

And that's it.

This wasn't their greatest episode, but it was very good. My sister and I can't help but burst out laughing at one certain scene. You know when they're trying to give the sedative to Jack, and he's screaming? Well, that last little one always makes us crack up.

He'd have to have fired one before, wouldn't he? I can't imagine Jack letting everyone's favorite geek go out into the field without having been given a stable grounding in most firearms. I'd guess that Daniel's spent some time on the range at some time or another.

I liked this episode but there is another science error made which no one else notice here. If the "virus" "fed" on histamine as Frasier said then antihistamines would not be protective or curative. The antihistamine that is used (chlorpheniramine), as all antihistamines, blocks the receptor for histamine without decreasing blood levels of histamine. Maybe they should have said the virus gained access to cells through the histamine receptor. What can I say, I am a biology geek with allergies. 8o)

It was a great episode :) My favorites are:

Sam coming onto Jack (notice how he answered her question - 'not like this?' Was this the beginings of the ship?)
Jack & Daniel - 'You poor man' and of course Jack beating on poor Daniel
Teal'c - His apology to Jack for losing Daniel - that was great. The poor guy had some serious guilt.
Daniel - Is this the first time Daniel has woken up, saying 'Jack?' How many times has that happened, I wonder. I know it's used a ton of times in fics.

I loved this episode as it introduced Janet to SG1. I loved her in this episode. It was a great storyline to introduce her to the show in and she was adorable. It's strange watching it now and seeing how fresh faced she was. She was so eager to do her job well and was totally perfect. Its amazing watching her from the start and realizing just how much the character had grown before her lst episode. My favourite scene was the scene she had with O'Neill when he was changed and telling her to use him to find out what was going on. I thought that was so well acted between Teryl and Richard and I've loved Janet ever since this episode. Janet we miss you!

Oh, yeah. The first season or two, every now and then the sets and costumes are incredibly cheesy for an episode. (As a costume person, I notice things like that.) For another example of cheesy costumes, check out Emancipation, Cor-Ai, and The Tok'ra (parts one and two).

Sam coming onto Jack (notice how he answered her question - 'not like this?' Was this the beginings of the ship?)

IIRC this is discussed in one of the commentaries--from the writer's perspective, the beginnings of the ship was when they watched the final cut of "Into the Fire" (the s3 premiere). All the way through they were going "wow, it looks like the two of them have really strong feelings for each other. I wonder what we can do with it?" Everything before that, to them, had been just friendly banter/needs of the story. They saw the attack in Broca divide purely as a case of an infected woman going after the alpha male. The fact that Carter and O'Neill were engaged in "There but for the grace of god" was simply there for shock value and to drive home how different this other universe was. That's what the writer's thought; I'd say they were in denial.

I don't think he does; I've watched it frame by frame to see exactly what happens and it's not a kiss. What happens is that he's trying to get himself into a position from which he can pull himself and her up together, without losing his grip on her. It's an awkward situation, particularly as he can't use his hands to balance himself because they're occupied keeping Carter pinned. In the process of trying to scootch himself into a position with better leverage, he dips his head forward and down to a position where it looks like he's kissing her neck.

Sam- Don't you want me
Jack- Not like this

I liked this episode because it was a good introduction to Janet, and also for the little touches of Stargate-humour (has anyone else noticed stargate seems to have its own brand of humour, which no other shows quite manage to replicate?).

When they came into the hall:
Jack: (dryly) Love what they've done with the place
Sam: I was going to do my living room like this, but... it didn't go with my other stuff.
Daniel: Looks Minoan.
Daniel's seriousness cracks me up everytime. :)

The gateroom scene with Daniel and Jack was definately a gem.

Also someone mentioned Jack saying to teal'c "Lucy i'm home." and teal'c's reply "I am not lucy". I thought the next bit was even funnier - Jack says "Let me out, i'm back to being myself", and Teal'c replies "I cannot be certain you are back to being yourself. You referred to me as lucy." ROFL!

I watched this episode last night, and I was thinking, its got one of the coolest non special effects shot in the series. When they look up at the briefing room window from the floor of the gateroom and those two guys smash through it.

I dunno...I think it just looks so cool! It reminded me of when I frst started watching Stargate last year, how cool I thought it was. (That was great, I had like as many new episodes as I could watch each day...7ish seasons of unwatched episodes...)

Does anyone else think that shot was awesome?

Yes definately. Although my personal season 1 favourite (so far) was in fire and water... when jack smashed the window of hammond's car with the hockey stick. I've got a screen capture of glass flying everywhere...

Sam coming onto Jack (notice how he answered her question - 'not like this?' Was this the beginings of the ship?)

IMO the beginnings of ship was the very first episode, to a certain extent! Just some of the looks exchanged in the briefing room.. Then in Emancipation the HUUGE grin on Jacks face when Sam wore "the dress", and little things like that...

How fun would it be watching SG-1 get attacked in complete darkness? From SG-1's point of view, it was probably pitch black, but the producers needed to let us viewers actually view the action there.

And yeah, I think Daniel was eating raw meat with the rest of the "touched".

There wasn't enough time in the episode--any new material would have detracted from an already complicated storyline. :S There may have been a short scene written originally that then wound up on the cutting room floor. I have to agree. I watched it yet again last PM, and I can't understand why so many people wanted it voted out (in the Best Epi tourney)so vehemently. RDA's acting was among the best I've seen him do (on SG-1), and it was the episode that introduced us to Dr. Frasier, a big plus in my book.

Ahh, the first of many times Richard Dean Anderson plays some strange variation of O'Neill. Sure he wasn't the only one affected, but he seems to get it the most often... at least 3 more times in the first season alone! Also, I believe the first instance of "SGC hit by strange plague, quarantined, miracle cure found in time."

When I first saw this episode and didn't know what was going on, I thought Daniel seemed too fond of Sam. "Slow down, buddy," I thought, "you've been away from your wife for like, one month."

if this happened in s7... we would call and alien ally or something... I like that we fixed something ourselves for once.
Yeah, that was a definite change over the years. (Season 6 spoiler) I was almost glad when there reached a point when the various allies were either destroyed, backing off to do their own thing, or not returning the SGC's phone calls.

I'd guess they just didn't realize she would end up doing the role so frequently for so long, so "doctor" was all that really mattered at the time.

I have only one comment one bit to say about this episode...a bit of a story...my friends and I are Anthropology/History majors. I guess geeks would be a better term...anyway, this may fit in a bit to either a You know you've been watching too much stargate when...or a you know you're an anthropology geek when...perhaps both. But we were discussing the Broca Divide, and how Daniel...the archaeologist mind you, begins by discussing that these creatures hold similarities to Austrolopithicenes (Which is highly incorrect. They are similar to Neanderthals if anything.) and I asked my friend how they went from being Austrolopithecenes to Neanderthals, and the following quote came from my friend... "It's expediated evolution! Proof that Lamarkian evolution is the way to go! They live in a land with magical giraffes!" :daniel: Anyway, I just want to see if anyone actually understands that. It cracks me up every time.

Yes, this was definitely one of the sillier episodes. :) The Touched characters did resemble Neanderthals more than Australopithicenes (which were short little 4 foot apes that walked erect if memory serves). But what was with all the Ally Oop grunting and humping? Reminded me of Quest for Fire or that other movie with Ringo Starr.

My impression was that the Dark Side/Light Side was metaphorical for the uncivilized areas (deep, dark forest) and the more cultivated, civilized part of the planet (cities and fields) - and perhaps also the right/left sides of the brain.

To me, this episode was clearly about showing the viewers how the SGC would handle a dangerous epidemic that was accidentally brought back to Earth. After this episode, we put more faith into Dr. Frasier's ability to fight unfamiliar diseases as well. :)

I only have one real unanswered question about this one, how could a planet always be half in constant light and half in constant darkness? The only thing I could think of was that the planet must rotate at such a speed that, when it revolved around it's sun, only one exact side of the planet would always face it's sun as it moves and shifts. Anyone else have a theory? http://www.thescifiworld.net/img/smilies/stargate/sam/samanime34.gif

If the planet has no seasonal 'wobble' - ie its rotational axis is perpendicular to its plane of orbit - then a planetary ring could cast a shadow so that even when a hemisphere faced the sun there would be a dark zone at the equator.

I loved RDA's acting here especially when he got infected. I liked the scenes where he was trying to communicate with Frasier. Jack must have a really strong will to be able to resist the change and still be coherent in some level.

There many funny Jack moments here, like:

1."Lucy, I'm home!" And of course Tealc did not get that. LOL!

2. Jack saying something about Daniel having a girl in every planet. "Daniel, you dog!"

3. Jack said something about that "little tank top number" in the final scenes after he told Sam about not remembering the seduction.

4. the seduction scene

5. when Jack was telling Daniel about what Sam did and Daniel was like "you poor man"

6. Jack telling Hammond about his "deductive reasoning skills"

Question: If one side is always light, and the other is always dark, does that mean that the planet does not rotate? Wouldn't one side be frozen wasteland and the other a burning desert?

(Weird Plot-hole)

When Teal'c came back to get blood samples he was forced to knock out two guards in order to do so. He went back to Earth and they figure out how to cure the "touched". When they came back through th gate they found Daniel and brought him back to the palace. They convince High Councilor Tuplo to allow them to take Daniel to the quarantine area.

Now this is where the bump is.

Teal'c is carrying Daniel into the quarantine area and the two guards cross their spears in order to stop Teal'c. They do this despite the fact that they both just heard Tuplo say that he could put Daniel down. Now this could have been some kind of personal grudge but the Minoan culture was a monarchy. Those guards were slaves and free will was not in the cards for those guys.

In short, why did they cross their spears?

Absolutely agree. I guess that's the idea I'm starting to get with these earlier episode and once you start understanding Gate travel your mind does wonder about all these catastrophic situations, diseases and life forms they could bring back. Makes you wonder why they don't try and setup a isolation/quarantine when teams first get back with at least blood tests and whatever else we can muster to stop possible epidemics.

Lots of hilarious Jackisms in this episode. I like how at the start they were discussing how the planets are named - as they are hard to remember.

I laughed out loud (probably a little to hard) at Jack's line at the end "Sure, if it doesn't heal properly you'll never wear that sweet little tank top number again".

A good first episode for Doctor Janet, as she helped save the day.

Hehe I wonder what Hammond did to Walter as he gave him a weird look when he came back into the control room.

Oh and RDA fantastic acting when Janet worked out that the sedative allowed him to understand and communicate with them.

Overall an interesting idea that certainly makes you think of all the what-ifs that are created with Gate travel.

Yes. After this episode, I have always wondered why there's no quarantine time for ALL off-world travelers. Aside from medical clearance.

I remember when my dad used to work for a really huge livestock farm. It's SOP for anyone coming in from outside to go to the quarantine area first. To avoid spreading disease that may affect the livestock.

I laughed out loud (probably a little to hard) at Jack's line at the end "Sure, if it doesn't heal properly you'll never wear that sweet little tank top number again".

Yep. The line was funny but Carter's expression was funnier for me.

A good first episode for Doctor Janet, as she helped save the day.

She showed that napoleonic powermongers are great doctors.

Hehe I wonder what Hammond did to Walter as he gave him a weird look when he came back into the control room.

Noticed it too? I thought maybe Hammond beaned him or something. :) They tend to get violent when infected with the virus.

Oh and RDA fantastic acting when Janet worked out that the sedative allowed him to understand and communicate with them.

I was impressed with RDA's acting here. I can felt how hard Jack tried so hard to express himself, how he conveyed that he is still in there.

My guess is that the guards remembered being knocked cold by Teal'c when he came to get a blood sample. That sort of thing is guaranteed to put you off somebody, regardless what orders have been given. Snag is, when Teal'c came for the sample, the guards were protecting the entrance, which is fair enough. This time they were protecting the 'isolation ring', which doesn't make sense as there was nobody there to protect or keep from leaving.

Over all I enjoyed this episode. It showed Dr. Frasier's dedication to the members of the SGC in her determination to find a cure for the disease. It showed O'Neill's concern for the SGC in his willingness to put himself at risk in order to find and test a cure. I particularly liked Teal'c gentleness with O'Neill after the anti-histamine had been injected. The banter between the various team members was fun, too.

I also liked the way Walter looked at Hammond when he came up at the end. I wonder what had happened to cause that look. Walter was definitely checking to make sure the General was back to normal.

I just watched this episode, and I'm sure my comments will have been discussed already but nevermind! :p

The one thing that bugged me was the transformation of infected characters into the neanderthals or whatever they were supposed to be. When Daniel is encountered towards the end, the fake teeth and monobrow just look rediculous. Why would a virus cause your bone structure and folicle activity to change? It makes no sense whatsoever.

What I noticed is that it seems even the producers decided it was a step too far. I didn't see any of the base characters in quarantine with a monobrow, with one exception. When Teal'c returns with the blood, Carter is strapped to the gurney having a fit or something, but you can see her with the monobrow make-up. It seems to me her transition was supposed to have been cut out, as no close-up is ever shown of her looking like that, and in that scene she is obscured by other characters.

Maybe kissing Jack does that to you...

:D

This was a good episode. I thought that the sounds that Deevolved Jack made were hilarious, all the others were pretty serious and normal, he made a sound like a dinosaur or veliciraptor or something, I think I just thought it was funny after seeing all the other things Jack was in.

Speaking of Jack, I do think it's funny that when Daniel wakes up he says "Jack?" It is like, why does he say that when the entierty of SG-1 is there? He wouldn't say Teal'c? or Sam? or hey I woke up. I don't know, it's just kind of funny but it works.

I skipped this episode somehow, after watching many later season ones, it was a funny one to go back to.

Other little thing, I wouldn't say that they were simply 'de-evolving'. I mean they were fighting, even killing (as they went through the gate window) each other. If you look at a group of monkeys, they would not be constantly killing each other and beating each other up, it is bad for survival. Sure there is the occasional skuffle, and perhaps big fight every once and a while, but back on the SG-1 base they were killing and stabbing each other for no reason. So I would say perhaps that it deevolved them and also made them lose reason, I just think this would be a bad 'picture' of how early humans or animals actually acted towards each other, I am trying to imagine a flock of birds or tigers or any group of animals acting like they did on the SG-1 base, it's just pure anarchy, not simple 'animal instinct', but oh well. Very dramatic show, and some funny bits as well.

Mmmm, Samantha's feisty in this episode, I can't believe this is only the fourth ever episode! I've seen way to many DVD box set recently (no TV) and this episode is similar to that of established shows with lots of experience and foundation. It seems like it should be in the middle of the second season at least.

I know Sam was infected but that girl goes for what she wants and honestly who wouldn't want McGuyver, oops, I mean RDA. Again, that tank top comment is dialogue that is seen between characters that have spent a lot of time together and the actors and writers are comfortable in their roles.

Daniel and Jack has known each other for quite a while, since the 1994 movie at least. It is understandable that at that time his relationship w/Jack is deeper than w/Sam and Teal'c.

I rewatched this episode for the 3rd time last night and still impressed by the acting of RDA. He looks really terrible. Also Hammond looks funny in restraint.

I had some classes on Broca when I was studying, it all comes back to me now ;-) it wasn't on the broca divide though, it was on the area of aphasia with physical causes, the area respinsible for speech in the brain is called the area (I'm translating this from dutch so I don't know the exact term) of Broca.

Jack actually does a really good impression of the aphasia of Broca, he was able to understand the rather complicated sentences of Dr. Frasier, but he couldn't produce a proper sentence himself, he could only express himself in words/simple phrases.

I think RDA/TPTB did his/their research and then decided that it was something that could be pulled off...

furthermore Jack is one hell of a guy...

Pretty good episode. I just rewatched it and I was also impressed by RDA's acting in particular. And the Jack/Teal'c moment near the end, with Teal'c debating on Jack's sanity after he calls him 'Lucy'. That was classic. Truly one of the first eye-openingly good comedic moments in the series.

I still have my issues with S1's overall musical presentation, though. The loudness, obnoxiousness, of it is really jarring. It's not that the music itself is bad, it's just that the placement is atrocious. It really takes away somewhat from the otherwise-solid presentation, especially here.

it's rather symbollic

the broca area, the difference between language and no language

it can be argued that language skills = 'civilized' and 'advanced' peoples. the 'touched' lacked/lost those skills, while the untouched still had those skills

those 'in the light' were educated, advanced, civilized. those 'in the dark' were primitive, brutal, animalistic.

light and dark, human and animal, advanced and primitive
