Writer: Carl Binder
Director: Alex Chapple

---

Hot off of the presses!

Carl also submitted an outline for episode #8, received notes, and is poised to do a rewrite - just as soon as he finishes work on a certain movie script.

http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/2009/02/12/february-12-2009-pre-production-update-and-those-things-better-left-said-or-unsaid/

Carl, meanwhile, is deep into Life - writing, thinking, rolling his eyes, pacing in frustration, and, occasionally crying. Given my experience, this indicates the script is coming along swimmingly.

Interesting they keep one word title going. Did they intentionally?
I'm not sure this has been done before.

But in my knowledge, I haven't seen any shows like that.

Other shows have done this. Stuff like Smallville and Legend of the Seeker have one word titles for all of their episodes.

I'm wondering if they'll keep this up for however many seasons they go....

Update!

New director Alex Chapple is deep into prep on Life. Brian (aka our Lieutenant Scott) worked with him on Law & Order and had nothing but great things to say about him in the lead up to his arrival. Alex, meanwhile, had some equally great things to say about Brian. Looking forward to their collaboration on this episode which will offer some significant insight into our various players including a little surprise or two. Or three.

What I think is that the spoilers give us some infos but every fans that have read spoilers for years know that the early resume doesn't reflect the episodes in all ways nor its goodness or badness
So even if this or that episode could appear like boring for the time being (and as I always did) I bow myself to the writers and their scripts !

Indeed, this is very true in this case. It appears that the production office has a new way of limiting the "leaking" of spoilers. See Can We Trust Spoilers Ever Again? Yesterday, we watched the latest cut of Life. A brilliant episode (written by Carl Binder, directed by Alex Chapple) with some great performances – and here I must make mention of two guest starts in particular: Sarah Smyth, who delivers a wonderfully nuanced performance as the struggling Annie Balic, and Reiko Aylesworth (Hey, eagle-eyed Lost fans!) whose touching turn as Sharon proves alternately uplifting and heart-rending. Great casting.

Reiko Aylesworth – Sharon (Life, Universe season 1)

Alas, I never had the opportunity to meet her but going from Carl’s on-set reports, Reiko is a delight to work with. On the other hand, I did see her dailies and watched her performance in the subsequent cuts of Life and can report, this time firsthand, that she was unbelievably good.

Then today, we watched the Day 1 Mix of Life (Episode #8). Director Alex Chapple, another Stargate newbie, delivers big time with an episode that explores the hidden lives of our characters. Some incredibly warm and touching performances in this one. Of all the romances, potential and otherwise, the Camille-Sharon relationship is the one that resonates the strongest with me. Every time I watch this episode, I always get a little, uh, dust in my eye watching their scenes. Kudos to Carl Binder who wrote the brilliant script and kudos to Joel Goldsmith who continues his winning composedly ways with a truly beautiful score.

Update!

One of the season’s highlights so far has been the episode Life in which Wray gets to return to Earth (via the body swap conceit of the communication stones) and be reunited with her wife, Sharon. The scenes are beautifully written and beautifully directed, but it’s the performances of both Ming Na and Reiko Aylesworth that really strike a cord. Their stable, grounded relationship is as much in contrast to the show’s other dysfunctional relationships as it is to Wray’s austere, lonely existence on the ship – making her eventual return that much more poignant.

BJS: Oooo that’s tough one. They’ve all been a blast, especially Air and all the stuff we did in New Mexico. Mind you its about the only one, pretty much every episode, including one's that are considered the best in the series (ie Heroes, which is I reckon probably one of the eps that convinced Robert Carlyle to do Stargate) have a lot of hate. Not every episode can suit every person’s taste, for me it doesn’t sound like it will be my favourite SGU ep but I'll keep an open mind.

This episode is just neutral until proven otherwise. Promos won't indicate a damn thing - a less-than-stellar promo could make a bad episode, or could make a good one.

The promo for Life's in the neutral ground, but various synopsises and the like make it sound pretty competent...

Oh, and I predict here there'll be... Scott hate, potential cries of a poorly portrayed lesbian relationship, Telford hate, Spencer hate, sex hate... And maybe a like for one or two Eli lines...

And young gets mad at his wife for sleeping with telford.

And this is supposed to be entertaining tv that everyone will love.

If someone doesn't like something, they're much more likely to be vocal about it. It's the way people work. You can't take a couple of dozen complaints on the internet as evidence of what the entire viewing population thinks. For every viewer who complains, there are a hundred thousand viewers who don't care. Unless you take the Fox News stance, where for every person who complains there's a billion people who feel the same way ;)

Young will come to Earth, and as always he will visit wife, and Telford is already living there. and then he will run towards telford as seen in teaser. Telford and Youngs Wife are together since communicaton stones "accident".

We will not know much knew about Wray. Just another love story between 2 women. There will be some kisses thats for sure.

Stargate Universe - Episode 1.09 - Life - Press Release

Using the communications stones, Lt. Scott (BRIAN J. SMITH) and Camile Wray (MING-NA) use their time back on earth to visit those they’ve left behind. Camile returns home to spend time with her partner, trying her best to make the strange circumstance normal. Meanwhile, Lt. Scott learns a past relationship might not have ended as he thought.

Aboard Destiny, Dr. Rush (ROBERT CARLYLE) supervises the exploration of new areas of the ship. Looking for resources to make their everyday lives easier, the crew stumbles upon a piece of Ancient technology that carries the promise of a way home. While somewhat familiar with the find, Dr. Rush can’t guarantee the safety of using it, bringing him and Col. Young (LOUIS FERREIRA) to a standoff on what to do.

Gossip Girl in Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace.

I figured as much. So taking a guess here... Scott's teeny girlfriend never went through with the abortion, is left wondering why Alpha Male ditched her for the Air Force. So does Scott set up child support or what? He's clearly not spending any of his O-2 pay.

Pretty much. I know for a fact my girlfriend and I will probably be eye-rolling for so much time during these particular scenes, the back of my skull is already hurting.

Joe Mallozzi, who, for reference's sake, I actually do agree with a relatively okay amount of time, claims this episode is part of the trifecta ('Time', 'Life' and 'Justice') of the 'best three episodes of the first half'. He also said it got 'even him' tearing up at certain parts. I'm... awaiting this. But not... holding my breath.

Exactly. Life may do for Scott what Earth did for Chloe - made her realise her shallow-ness, and we do see her in Time helping out with the offworld mission, so maybe she's moving up in the useful scale. Scott, meanwhile, may become a little more on the serious side after Life's incidents...

Any links to that trailer that can be viewed outside of Canada/US? Or shall we have you type a play by play and post it? Preferably at internet gunpoint?

No! Not at Internet Gunpoint!!

Unfortunately, SPACE doesn't seem to put up episode-by-episode promos. Sorry.

Whatever the case, what I saw was pretty cool.

There's also more to it than the discovery of the tech thing; the episode is also supposed to be about the daily life of people on the Destiny. I'm pretty interested in that too. They had clips of people running around the corridors to exercise, for instance.

But whatever. I guess the old lesson of "don't judge an episode by its promo" just doesn't stick with some people, no matter how many times it's taught. ;)

EDIT: Ok, the SPACE promo for Life just aired, and I managed to catch this snippet:

Rush: It could be our salvation.
Young: It could also kill someone!
Rush: A sacrifice that could save everyone else on this ship!

When Young says his line, he also seems to push Rush against the wall, but the editing makes it unclear as to whether he was really pushing Rush.

Thanks for the titbits! I gathered that the episode must be named Life for a good reason, so it seems to be missing "A Day In The" before it, eh? Anyways, interesting stuff with...

Rush and Young. I wonder if this argument will play into the spoilers I've read, stating that Rush tries to frame Young for some crime, and Young does get put on trial in Justice... Wow, they're not exactly Butch Cassidy buddies this week!

Either way, looking forward to the episode.

Makes out with Sharon in another girl's body

Scott visits the girl he bangs up

Park has sex with someone on the destiny

And young gets mad at his wife for sleeping with telford.

And this is supposed to be entertaining tv that everyone will love.

Bull, this is gonna hurt SGU REALLLYYY bad, and honestly, im looking forward to TPTB's reaction of fan reaction.

I have read just as many posts stating how they are not happy with SGU than people who post that they are happy with it.

and don't forget posts/threads that are too negative towards SGU get "retired".

Have there been any real polls conducted, no not on a forum but on the actual network's site?

If I'm not mistaken a poll about "not liking sex/Chloe" which showed that more than 50% of viewers disliked her was "nixed" pretty quickly.

So how can you truly know how many people are not pleased?

Just had a thought, what if this is the episode where Chloe finally finds her place on Destiny?

In “Air” through “Water” she was useless, which she herself pointed out.

In “Earth” she realized how pointless and shallow her life had actually been.

In “Time” she was trying to help out, trying to be useful.

Maybe in “Life” she finds out what skills she has that are useful on Destiny and finds where she can use them.

I'm going to say no to Scott. Don't know why, but it just seems off.

But Brody sounds plausible enough given the tiny snippet of friendship we got to see in one of the Kinosodes between the two...

So, bored out of my mind at work, I fiddled with the contrast on the pic in question, and I'm pretty sure it's neither Scott nor Brody. I can't see the face well enough to identify it, but it looks like he's got a big tattoo down his arm that says "Soledad". Scott doesn't have that, and Brody doesn't strike me as a tattoo guy (though if I'm wrong about that, that would be hilarious). Maybe it's Park's significant other using Scott's body while he's on Earth.

You know, i'm looking forward to finding out a little bit more about whats going on Earth and how its effects everyone, BUT another sort of "Earth" episode coming along only a couple of episodes after "Earth" itself seems a bit rushed (Well thats what it looks like from the trailers *cough* yes, i'm prepared to be proved otherwise).
I'd of thought that TPTB would of spread these sort of episodes out a bit more...
