    Star frog

Atlantis just began to air here in slovenia and the translations are sometimes quite funny. For example Puddle jumper is translated as zvezdna žaba which translated back to english means star frog anyone else noticed funny translations of stargate shows in their languages.

Atlantis hasn't begun airing here in Finland yet but we have DVD releases. Their subtitles practically suck and the translators have had no kind of sense of continuity with the words they use.
    - In one episode Puddle Jumper is left in its English form
    - In the next one its "Jumpperi" (which actually means 'a sweater' in Finnish)
    - In some episodes it is called "Vesikirppu" (= 'strider', 'water flea').
In fan subtitles it is known as "Puttialus" (putti means 'puddle' in one dialect of Finnish, alus stands for 'ship').

I know this isn't a thread for whining about the quality of subtitles but here are some quite interesting mistakes on the Finnish DVD subtitles:
    - Subtitles of Rising suggest that O'Neill is Canadian instead of McKay. In my books that is a bad, bad, BAD failure
    - Star drive was once known as "tähtiasema" which translates back to star drive... only in this case drive means CD/DVD drive and "ajo" or "moottori" would have been correct instead of "asema"
    - Asuran Replicators are often referred to as 'Kopiot', Copies, which they certainly are not
Season three and four box set subtitles are a dream for spell and continuity error spotters Could go on with this for hours.

^ I think we share the same DVD releases, just covers in different language. Dunno if you were speaking about TV or DVD, but I'd like to know if Swedish subtitles on DVD are as horrible as Finnish, svenska förstår jag själv så dåligt

I can bear witness of it for Spanish & German also... let's make official: Translations for Sci-Fi Scripts & Subtitles are §%$&%(/&(/)=. It's something universal!

These people are pointblank everything but professionals or they get their job done systematically having a hangover or something like that, which leads me back to "everything but professional". C'mon, they're paid for it! I'm not saying they should be Sci-Fi-Freaks, not even Sci-Fi-Fans! Absolutely not, for crying out loud! But at least they should make a little researching about it. Each country have their own translation rules. For example, German translators must "Mr./Miss" -English- or "Sr./Sra."-Spanish-. In Spain that don't happens and "Mr./Miss" are always translated to Spanish. At least, both German & Spanish translators have let "Stargate" in English, that's something.

Anyway. The point is: producers should take this flagrant unprofessionalism seriously and give the people who pays quality products in their own languages too!

Makes me think of the Season 3 episode First Strike when Shepard tells them "Why don't you two guys just make out and get it over with"

But I have noticed that is the case with a lot of shows.

I am from the US, and I speak English. However I do understand (albeit not fluently) French. And some of the translations to French are unbelievable. And what gets me is this.

These companies who spend millions of dollars to produce these shows apparently don't keep a eye on the translations or don't care. And the perfect example is the picture post above. "This will not commit suicide the sex mission once, If McKay and Zelenka". What does that have to do with that episode. You would figure that they would want a correct translation, but we got was a Sci-Fi version of cheap porn flick.

Wait! If a CD/DVD drive is a star drive then I have two star drives here? How cool is that! Oh... actually I have three, there's also one in my notebook. Now the only thing I need is a ship to install them...

Ok, back to topic... here in Germany I haven't really noticed any tranlation mistakes. But I'm sure there are some. Most of the things keep their names, like stargate, just very few times it is called Sternentor, which means the same. A Puddle Jumper is a Puddle Jumper...
The only things that bothers me are the episode titles. For example season 10 of SG-1. The episode The Shroud has IMO a wonderful title. Now the translation was Daniel - der Prior. I guess I don't really have to translate that to English, right? If you read this title it almost completely takes away the moment of surprising when you see Daniel throwing back his hood at the beginning of the episode. This was IMO the worst translation ever although it does not tell you what happens.

                        Daniel: "It´s the only way!"
                        Jack: "What?"
                        Sam: "Now, we agreed...!"
Jack: "If I have to say "WHAT?" one more time, heads are gonna roll!"

I know a guy who used to work at a firm that made translations for tv, and the subtitles were made by translating word for word from the English ones without watching the show or anything. So you take an expression out of context and you translate it word for word and there you have a horrible subtitle this being the reason I don't watch Stargate on tv, I just take the dvd with the episode that's airing and watch that and I gain a few minutes because no adds. As far as Dvd releases go I don't know mainly because I've yet to see Romanian releases and even if there were any I wold not buy them, I prefer to buy mine from the UK. There is much to be said about bad subtitles even the worst one is nowhere near as bad as seeing Stargate or any other show in Italian or German( I've seen both I know) or quite possibly in any other language.
Hmm, The Bible, what a waste of perfectly good toilet paper.

                            Hi,

Calling the "Stargate" in English and sometimes calling it in the own language is ok if they try to explain something. In Spain it's the same thing. They say "The Stargate, the Gate to the Stars..." (or something like that) and is ",the Gate to the Stars" what is translated into Spanish, German, or whatever.

Translations for SG have errors, but the great, enormous, gigantic, astronomical Error-Thing comes with Star Trek. I say you, THAT's another world. I'm sure you know, for example, the whole thing about the TOS episode "Amok Time"...
