How Many Played with Fox's Dollhouse? Did You?

While we're waiting for the ratings to come in, I thought I'd put this out there: Did you tune into Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku's Dollhouse? And if so, what was your first impression?

It's worth noting that Episode 2 is markedly better, 3 features a nifty reveal, and 4 serves up a cool plot twist.

side note:-Interesting coincidence: In May of 1966 the band The Blue Things released a single with the song Doll House on the front side and one called Man On The Street on the back side. The song Doll House was about a young girl's life as a prostitute, which some think is a similar concept to the Dollhouse in the series.

ALPHA CASTING CONFERMED!!

Mike in Aurora, Colo.: I dig Dollhouse! Any chance you can tease what's coming up next week?

Did you know that the Dolls can be remotely deactivated via telephone? Well, it's possible, it happens, and it's bad news for Echo (Eliza Dushku). Who makes the call? Clues point to the mysterious active known only as Alpha. And guess who'll be playing him? Alan Tudyk (aka Wash from Firefly).

Question: I'm dying to know who is playing Alpha on Dollhouse! Rumor has it it's... --Lelia

Ausiello: Let me stop you right there. Trust me, you do not want to know who's been cast in this role. Knowledge of this person's identity will ruin a major Alpha-related twist that Dollhouse boss Joss Whedon has been desperately trying to keep a lid on. Loosely translated into riddle form: What if we were to meet Alpha without knowing we were meeting Alpha? You with me, Lelia?

Dollhouse's Mysterious Alpha May Be The Person We Least Suspect

Now that the news we posted about Dollhouse's mysterious Alpha is looking more like a rumor, Joss Whedon has let slip another crucial detail: the actor who plays Alpha may, himself, be a huge spoiler.

EW's Michael Ausiello didn't confirm that pervasive rumor that regular Whedon actor Alan Tudyk is playing Alpha, the renegade doll gone bad. (We originally reported it as fact, thinking it came from official sources, then corrected the entry as soon as we realized.)

But Ausiello did find out that knowing the identity of Alpha's actor would reveal a major twist in the Dollhouse saga. Reading between the lines, it sounds like we'll meet Alpha without knowing we're meeting Alpha, because he'll be masquerading as someone else.

Meanwhile, ShowMeSciFi says one of their readers claims Sean Maher (who played Simon Tam in Firefly) is actually playing Alpha.

Can I be the first to start the rumor that the FBI agent formerly known as Romo Lampkin is Alpha?

Michelle in Dublin, Ireland: Friday's ep of Dollhouse was the best one yet. Got any new scoop on that show?

The awesomeness of Friday's episode of Dollhouse can be traced back to writer Tim Minear, who tells us, "Can't wait for you to see episode 12, which I got to write and direct." Holler. Oh, and don't forget to check back Wednesday evening for the dish on the next two eps of Dollhouse from the master himself. Ty in Atlanta: Hey! You talked about Dollhouse all the time before we could see it, and now that I watch it every Friday I feel like you completely forgot about it! Can I have some dish? It's definitely my favorite new show in a long time.

The Sierra-centric March 20 episode centers around a documentary on whether the Dollhouse urban legend is real or not. There's some sexy time going on behind the scenes in the house, and she's one of the culprits, but the actives aren't the only ones getting hot and steamy—Echo and Paul finally come face-to-face...

Is there a chance that someone from Firefly will be playing Dollhouse's Alpha? Any Dollhouse scoop, really, would be über-appreciated! — Becca

MATT: We're not supposed to know who's playing Alpha, for what (if you stop to think about it) are obvious reasons. So out of respect for Joss Whedon's storytelling, I'll sidestep your first question. On the scoop front, I'm wondering if Echo's alley-fight reveal to Ballard — that someone on "the inside" is trying to help him — was truth-telling or a bit of misinformation planted by Adelle. Here's what Whedon said when I ran that by him: "You can go ahead and wonder that, but for now I'd take it at face value."

20 Dollhouses?! WTF?? Are we going to see any of them this season? -Rebecca

According to creator Joss Whedon, we won't actually be seeing any of the other dollhouses this season, but we will be meeting some of the people in charge of them and hearing more on the subject. If FOX orders another year of episodes in May though, we'll probably get to peek inside the other DHs down the road. And yes, the plan is to have brand new sets built, not just the set we've seen so far with new people.

'Dollhouse': A spy in the house of love and sex and secrets

Coming on the heels of this week's announcement that a 13th episode of Dollhouse won't air on Fox (start saving for that DVD set), last night's Dollhouse episode took on an eerie air: as more revelations came out about the nature of the Dollhouse, it felt as though the show was presiding over its own funeral. It gets better week after week, while there seems less and less hope of it surviving.

Anyway, how about Eliza Dushku's Echo and Dichen Lachman's Sierra as tough spies tasked with finding out the spy within the Dollhouse? Well, actually, first things first: How about Echo dressed as an S&M mistress in an opening scene, and those close-ups of Sierra's sky-high-heels as she ran? On one level, this episode was a fetishist's dream, sure to be freeze-framed for months to come. This was creator Joss Whedon and his collaborators' witty way of playing with the series premise, that the "dolls" are attractive women and men programmed to serve the wishes of their "clients" (who, as we gaze at them, implicitly includes us).

This idea has become far more interesting in the past few weeks, as we learn more about how Dushku's character is struggling soulfully to regain her original identity, and the mythology of Dollhouse becomes ever more rich. As Mellie said last night, revealing crucial info to obsessed, suspended-FBI-agent Ballard, "The Dollhouse deals with fantasy, but that is not their [sic] purpose. You must investigate their purpose."

Last night was a good one for Topher, who was scrambling to figure out who was monkeying around with his dolls, and tossing off Whedonesque quips at a rapid clip. "I made her a spy-hunter," he said proudly of Echo. "She rocks a little Sherlock Holmes."

So now I turn to you, readers, for comments and theories about this, the ninth episode (only three -- er, four in an ideal world -- to go): What did you think of Miss DeWitt's self-described "indiscretion" with "imprint" Victor? (Personally, I think DeWitt's character has become the most complex, and that Olivia Williams is giving an amazing performance.) And What do you think Dominic meant when he said to Echo, "One day you'll be erasing them?"

Edward in West Deptford, N.J.: How about some Dollhouse scoop?

As we reported last week, Dollhouse episode 14, aka "Epitaph One," takes place in the future, but we've since learned that the ep is set 30 years in the future, and that the episode includes no main characters. Hmmm...Speaking of Dollhouse, the Victor-Lonelyhearts reveal was a shocker, no? Does that lay to rest your doubts about the Dollhouse being almost purely an engine of sexual exploitation? Or is the Dollhouse just like any new technology—film, VHS, the Internet—where the porny types are always the first adopters

Dollhouse - Ain't Looking Good for Alpha

"Everything that Alpha's done, it's been to get to Echo."

That's what we just learned from a conference call with "Dollhouse"'s Alan Tudyk who was finally unmasked as "Alpha" last Friday... though anyone with access to the internet knew it was him months ago.

Anyhoo, the second half of the finale airs this week, and some new info on what to expect was revealed: Seems Alpha has 43 people in his brain... basically all the personalities he was imprinted with are still there. On Friday, we'll see flashbacks to Alpha's time as a doll, as well as what the effects of having all those peeps hanging around his psyche are. I guess he thinks he's reached an almost God-like status and his goal is to bring Echo up to the same level.

Somehow I don't think he'll succeed though. Not only did Tudyk say that Alpha may not make it through the next episode and that he didn't want to comment on his character's fate past Friday, fans of the actor know he's already signed on to do another pilot.

'Dollhouse' exclusive: Amy Acker to return

Comic-Con news alert: Dollhouse boss Joss Whedon just confirmed to me exclusively that Amy Acker has inked a deal to return for three episodes in season 2. There was some question whether Acker would be able to juggle Dollhouse with her full-time gig on ABC's new drama Happy Town.

Amid the cheers and woots, Whedon gave the show's fans pause when at one point he teased, "There is one trustworthy person in the Dollhouse — and I'm going to kill them." Was he casting a dark cloud over do-right Boyd? Kindly Topher? Former lawman Paul? Whedon let slip no clues

Linda in Pomona, Calif.: Got any Dollhouse news?
Boy do we. Show runner Joss Whedon spilled some Dollhouse dish at the Television Critics Association tour about what's in store for Echo (Eliza Dushku). Joss says, "Echo starts really realizing that as a person, she not only exists, but that she has a mission—that she has something she wants. This year we are going to see the results of everything she went through last year, particularly the event with Alpha where she was downloaded with all of her personalities. We are going to see what effect that's had on her, and we are going to find her to be a great deal less passive and a great deal more directed in what she wants, and that is, of course, going to make her life a lot harder. And the more she finds out about what is going on around her and the more we find out, the creepier it is going to get, because creepy is what it makes it fun."

Tim in Pittsburgh: With Amy Acker now on Happy Town, will she be in Dollhouse next season?
Dollhouse boss Joss Whedon can answer this for you: "Yes, and it is not nearly as much as we would like, but we are going to make the most of [Amy Acker] in those few."

Summer Glau Set for Dollhouse

It had been fairly inevitable that it would happen eventually, but plans are now set for Summer Glau to appear on Dollhouse. HitFix.com's Daniel Fienberg has confirmed the news with FOX, after Dollverse reported that Glau would play a character named Bennett, who works inside the Dollhouse.

HitFix now adds that Bennett, who will appear in multiple episodes, is someone who shares a past with Echo (Eliza Dushku) and has a connection to another Dollhouse character. They also note that Bennett works for a Dollhouse, but probably not the one the series centers on – the show has already established that there are many Dollhouses across the globe.

Robyn in Port St. Lucie, Fla.: At the end of last season on Dollhouse, Alpha slashed Victor's face. Is this something they will fix? Will he still be a Doll, or will they use him like they used Amy Acker's character after Alpha did that to her?

In season two of Dollhouse, Victor is still a Doll, and yes, happily, his face will be fixed. Joss Whedon is crazy, but not so crazy that he'd permanently ruin the prettiness of Enver Gjokaj!

More on Summer Glau's Dollhouse Role

We all know Summer Glau is coming to Dollhouse and that she'll play a Dollhouse employee of some sort – but now a FOX-related source has given me a bit more information on her character.

Joss Whedon has said he would not cast Glau as a Doll, due to her playing similar roles of that sort in the past – and indeed, he's gone the opposite route. Rather than playing a Doll, Glau is playing one of the people who makes the Dolls what they are. Yes, Glau's character, Bennett, is the equivalent of Topher - a Programmer. Bennett works in a Dollhouse that is new to the series, located in Washington, DC.

Bennett comes into play as Alexis Denisof's new character Daniel Perrin (briefly introduced in the season premiere) has his role and storyline elevated. Perrin is a US senator, so it seems a trip to Washington, DC is likely in store for the Dollhouse crew.

Dollhouse has tapped spooky-cool Ray Wise to join the cast in the potentially recurring role of Howard, an intelligent higher-up in the Dollhouse who has huge presence and humor.

Wise is coming off of a two-year stint as Lucifer on The CW’s Reaper. Of course, to me, he’ll forever be the dude who offed Laura Palmer.

Big Joss news: Dollhouse

How does it feel to be left alone on Dollhouse?

Whedon: I'm afraid and I want Kevin to come back and hold me. The fact is, we definitely feel more centered about what we're doing. That doesn't mean that we're doing it completely in a vacuum. We still get notes, and sometimes they're enormously helpful, because that's what a collaboration is supposed to be like. The problem with last year was there was a question about what the show was. That doesn't exist anymore.

Now we go episode by episode, but what are we trying to accomplish? So it's still a collaboration, but in terms of "Oh, let's try and mold this show to what we thought it was going to be," that's over. So in that sense, yes, they have left us alone.

Did you have reservations about doing a scene where Paul really hits Echo?

Whedon: Well, I didn't really have reservations about it, because it very quickly becomes clear that he hits her in order that she can beat the thundering s--t out of him and everybody else in the room. He's basically igniting a bomb, so it's shocking and sort of awful, but then when you see why he's doing it, there is that moment, which is my favorite, as she comes at him where he just sort of goes [makes the "bring it on" gesture], "Do it, take me, give me what I deserve."

What kind of character does Alexis Denisof play for you this time?

Whedon: Alexis is a politician who is actually sniffing around Rossum [the corporation that runs the Dollhouse], and so he's definitely more suave than Wesley was in his early incarnation. Right now he's an earnest guy trying to do the right thing, but he's coming up against the Dollhouse, and we know how well that went for Paul Ballard.

When will we see Summer Glau?

Whedon: You will see Summer around episode five or six. She'll be working for the team. I believe that's already out there. She'll be working for the Dollhouse team.

Kicking some ass?

Whedon: She will not be terminating, nor will she have a trigger that turns her into a living weapon a la River, or Mellie. Knowing it was going to be Summer, or hoping it was going to be Summer, I wanted to do something that was different and plays to her strengths, but at the same time is a different character and kind of lovely. There'll be a little romance involved as well.

Robyn in Plainsboro, N.J.: I just watched the unaired Dollhouse episode on the DVD. It is so good. You find out so many things, one of them being that Echo is Caroline and Echo all at once! Any Dollhouse spoilers you can share about this?
The Caroline-Echo dynamic is actually a key plot point in the Dollhouse season premiere. Memo to Adele DeWitt: Generally speaking, it's better if your undercover operatives don't have multiple personalities that can be addled into appearing by the merest stress. Basically, Echo's on a mission and when things go bad, thanks to fabulous bad guy Jamie Bamber, it's not clear if Caroline is going to be Echo's biggest asset or her worst vulnerability.

What do you know about Dollhouse's little Battlestar Galactica reunion? — Campbell
MICKEY: Jamie Bamber appears in the season premiere as an arms dealer who falls prey to Echo's charms, and before the episode's end he'll share at least one explosive scene with former BSG comrade Tahmoh Penikett. Meanwhile, Dr. Saunders' finale revelations have left Whiskey with a lot of questions — namely, can she go out on a date? Can she choose with whom she'll have sex? The answer to both appears to be no, and that sends her on a journey of sorts.

Question: What can you tell us about Summer Glau’s character Bennett on Dollhouse? —DerrickAusiello: She’s not some lowly Dollhouse employee — she’s a chief programmer like Topher! Speaking of D’house, the new Entertainment Weekly contains a major spoiler about Ray Wise’s character. You might want to pick one of those up.

Question: How about some new Dollhouse scoop, please? —Peter
Ausiello: I’m going to let Tahmoh Penikett take this one. “At the end [of the premiere], there is a very important conversation between Echo and Paul where she lets me know that she’s functioning with all these personalities in her mind at once and that she knows what is going on. It changes the playing field if the main doll has awareness of her situation. I like that it isn’t all damsel in distress, and Paul is starting to realize that.”

Back into the Dollhouse with Tahmoh Penikett

With Dollhouse returning for its second season this Friday, I recently spoke to one of the show's stars, Tahmoh Penikett, to learn more about what his character, Paul Ballard, is up to as the season begins . The Season 2 premiere, "Vows", finds Penikett reunited with one of his former Battlestar Galactica castmates, as Jamie Bamber guest stars as a man Echo (Eliza Dushku) marries, as part of her Dollhouse assignment. Penikett discussed getting to work with Bamber again, along with another upcoming guest star from BSG - Michael Hogan.

Those wary of any and all Spoilers should be aware Penikett does talk about some details of Bamber's character, though these elements are specific only to the first episode of the season and not as important to the overreaching story arc of the series.

First Look: Summer Glau in 'Dollhouse'

The agonising countdown to Summer Glau's Dollhouse debut has been on our minds since creator Joss Whedon confirmed the news earlier this year. Thankfully, if you're Stateside, her arrival is only two weeks' away in the first episode of a special two-parter titled 'The Public Eye'.

She'll be playing the Washington, DC Dollhouse's equivalent of Topher who also has a mysterious/shocking connection to Echo. Ahead of Glau's appearance, we've got our hands on these following promo images of her Dollhouse debut:

Shel in Colorado: I love Victor and Sierra! Are we going to get to see any more of them as a couple before Dollhouse goes off the air?
There will most definitely be more Victor and Sierra sweetness on Dollhouse before the show goes off the air for good. An insider whispers, "We learn just how deeply in love Victor and Sierra are across several more episodes—especially when they are separated..." Ack! Don't love the news about a separation, but they do say absence makes the heart grow fonder. Who else is terribly torn by this news?!

No real surprise. There is not a single happy couple in the Whedonverse. This is actually something that always bugged me. Would it hurt Joss so much to give a couple a happy ending? I mean a real one? He sort of gave Mal and Inara a sort of happy ending...well at least the chances are good that they might end up together again, but I guess he had to do that after killing Wash and turning Zoe into a widow -_-

Question: Any Dollhouse news? We only have nine episodes left! —Lindsey
Ausiello: I better get this out there quick then! English actor Adam Godley (The X-Files: I Want to Believe) has been cast as Clyde, a genius who holds secrets to the dollhouse. The role is potentially recurring. Or as potentially recurring as one can be when the show only has nine episodes left. Speaking of which, here’s a handy clip-n-save rundown of how D’house’s remaining episodes will be burned off air.

Dec. 4: two episodes
Dec. 11: two episodes
Dec 18: two episodes
Jan 8: one episode
Jan 15: one episode
Jan 22: one episode (series finale)

Kelly in Michigan: Any dish on the final episodes of Dollhouse? I'll miss that crazy show!
Producers are casting for the series finale as we speak, and we'll be meeting a new Active named Romeo (assuming the NATO phonetic alphabet nomenclature remains in play). Romeo is a good-looking bruiser with tats, a shaved head and an "intimidating" persona. Hmmm, is Romeo just playing a scary enforcer type, or will he actually be batting around our faves? The mystery will be resolved Jan. 22 when we see the last-ever ep of Dollhouse for ourselves.

Alana in Belgrade, Minn.: The two Summer Glau eps of Dollhouse on Friday were pretty good. What else can we look forward to from that show before it's over?
All we can say is that we're really, really hoping that the Dollhouse series finale casting for "T"—an adorable, precocious and somewhat fearless 6-year-old with mixed Asian and Caucasian heritage—is for the role of Victor and Sierra's son in the future. Come on, happy ending!
