    Green Hornet News/Speculation/Discussion

Drew McWeeny of the fledgling entertainment site HitFix had been hearing from various unnamed sources at the Sundance Film Festival that Seth Rogen's plan to bring the '30s pulp hero The Green Hornet may have stalled with the departure of Stephen Chow as the film's director, as reported last month.

    Drew says:

Ever since Stephen Chow started to waffle about his participation in the film, I've been hearing rumors that there were major hesitations at Sony. Then at Sundance, I heard several people say that the film was off completely. I spoke this afternoon with a source close to the film, and while they didn't call it completely dead, they did say it is "highly unlikely" that the film will shoot in 2009 at all.

Currently, Sony still has The Green Hornet listed on their release schedule for June 25, 2010 giving Rogen plenty of time to find a new director and a new Kato, but if it gets moved or pulled from that great summer release date, we can probably start taking these rumors more seriously.

Michel Gondry—you read it right—to helm Green Hornet??

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind director Michel Gondry is in talks to direct The Green Hornet, Columbia's movie update of the classic crime-fighting hero being portrayed by Seth Rogen, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Gondry would step in for Stephen Chow, who had been tapped to direct but dropped out over creative differences. Chow is still expected to co-star as Kato, the Hornet's trusty sidekick and chauffeur.

Since Chow's departure, the project has been the subject of speculation that it was sliding into development hell, but the studio is intent on making the feature one of its 2010 tentpoles, the trade paper reported.

Gondry marks an offbeat choice to direct a superhero movie: He's also the helmer behind The Science of Sleep and Be Kind Rewind. He signals that the creative direction the studio and the film's producer, Neal Moritz, are trying to take the project is one not usually associated with the usual crime-fighter movie.

Hornet follows the adventures of Britt Reid, a bored playboy who inherits his father's crusading newspaper, the Daily Sentinel. By night he is a masked hero, fighting crime with his sidekick Kato, who has incredible martial arts skills. Rogen and his writer partner Evan Goldberg joined the project in July 20, 2007, as writers and co-executive producers.

Cage in talks for 'Green Hornet' villain

Nicolas Cage is circling the villain role in comic book adventure The Green Hornet.

According to Variety, the Knowing star is in early talks to portray a gangster who goes up against Seth Rogen's masked crimefighter.

It has also been confirmed that Cameron Diaz is in discussions to play the love interest, a reporter who works for the newspaper owned by the Hornet's alter ego Britt Reid.

The superhero film, which Columbia Pictures has scheduled for a July 9, 2010 release, will be directed by Michel Gondry (Be Kind Rewind) from a script by Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

Edward James Olmos joins cast of Green Hornet

BSG, Miami Vice and Blade Runner stalwart Edward James Olmos has joined the cast of Michel Gondry's upcoming The Green Hornet, according to Hollywood Snitch.

Olmos joins an increasingly impressive cast on the superhero flick, which as of now includes well-known comic book fan Nicolas Cage (who is currently trying to develop a follow up to Ghost Rider, will lend his voice to the upcoming Astro Boy, and will star in the adaptation of Mark Millar's Kick Ass comic book), Cameron Diaz, Jay Chou as Kato, and Seth Rogen as Britt Reid, aka The Green Hornet.

The Green Hornet is currently scheduled for a July, 2010 release.

The Green Hornet - Pushed Back Five Months

The Green Hornet, written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and directed by Michel Gondry, was set to open in July of next year, but now won’t wear the mask until December 17, 2010. It’s an interesting move, since in a summer slot the film might get lost admist hefty competition like the third Twilight film, Predators, Inception and Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, all of which are slotted for early to mid-July. Read what Seth Rogen says about the move after the break.

The news of the move broke on a few sites today, but Drew at HitFix got in touch with Rogen for comment. He says:

It gives more time for post, which would have been immensely rushed if we were to come out in the summer. It also affords us more time to promote the film, (now we can go to Comic-Con with more than a car!) and ultimately is a great vote of confidence from the studio.

                Filming begins on 'Green Hornet'

Filming has begun on The Green Hornet, it has emerged.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the release of the superhero movie has been pushed back five months, prompting star Seth Rogen to express his relief that the project would not be rushed into a July 2010 opening.

Columbia Pictures has now revealed that the film has now gone before cameras in Los Angeles, although it will stick to its December release.

The press release confirmed that Cameron Diaz, Edward James Olmos and Jay Chou will join Rogen in the cast.

Nicolas Cage is said to still be in negotiations to portray the masked vigilante's nemesis, while Tom Wilkinson has been added to the roster of actors working on the Michael Gondry-directed project.

Nicolas Cage drops out of The Green Hornet?

The rumor mill giveth, the rumor mill taketh away. First came a report (in Variety) that Nicolas Cage would play the gangster villain opposite Seth Rogen in Rogen's new take on The Green Hornet.

Not so, says The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog:

Cage was to play the villain in Columbia's action movie, being directed by Michel Gondry, but the actor and the studio were not able to come to terms on a deal.
Columbia had no comment but sources said the studio is on the hunt for a new bad guy.

No scenes with Cage were on shot for the movie, which just began principal photography in Los Angeles last week.
