Rumor Mill : James Cameron Wants to Direct Forbidden Planet Remake ?

According to IESB, an inside source told the website that Titanic and Avatar director James Cameron is eyeing the upcoming Forbidden Planet remake written by Babylon 5 producer J. Michael Straczynski, and is very interested in helming the project.

According to IESB, Cameron has been "eyeing" the project for a good part of a decade, AICN posted info on it back in 1998 when he was hot off of Titanic. But it never came to fruition. But now that Warners is pushing full steam ahead, his interest again has been piqued.

The original 1956 classic movie was set in early 2200s. United Planets Cruiser C-57D is sent to the planet Altair IV to find out what happened to a colony expedition sent out some twenty years earlier. At the end of the year-long voyage, Commander John J. Adams (Leslie Nielsen) contacts Dr. Edward Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), the expedition's philologist, who warns him to stay away, but refuses to give a reason.

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry often credited Forbidden Planet for its influence on Star Trek.

IESB has contacted Silver Pictures who are producing the project and are awaiting comment at the time of this post.

For now, this information is preliminary, of course, and entirely rumor.
