The spacegate has only 8 chevrons!

Why does the spacegate have only 8 chevrons at the beginning of the ep. when it is supposed to be 9? Did I miss something?

You should learn to count, there's only 8. This was a common special effect error on the series. Seven chevrons to dial the stargate, an eighth to dial Earth. The ninth was never mentioned, and since the only stargate set piece on the show was in the Atlantis set, CGI inconsistencies cropped up now and then.

I think 8 makes more sense in the Pegasus galaxy though, since it turned out 9 chevrons was a code.

Yeah, but each Stargate is supposed to have 9.

Apparently in one episode there was a deleted scene with Rodney and Zelenka arguing over the meaning of the 9th symbol, with one of them thinking that it would get you to another part of the universe...Lol

The bigger goof is that some stargates are set into the floor/ground, whilst others (space gates) are completely exposed. Every time the Atlantis gate is activated, it should blow a hole in the floor For that matter, if people walked from a completely exposed gate through to one that was on a dias, then they should fall flat on their face Best not to think about these things too much, minor goofs like that are bound to happen

All stargates have had nine chevrons dating back to the original film. We didn't start to see eight-chevron stargates until the Season 3 finale, "First Strike." Someone messed up when creating the digital effect for the stargate satellite weapon. The stargate within only had eight chevrons instead of nine. Oops! Unfortunately, this wasn't caught immediately, and we often saw eight-chevron stargates. We even saw an eight-chevron Milky Way stargate in "Midway." Woops! It was just a special effect screw up.

Another special effect screw up on the show is the two-sided stargates. Back in the SG-1 days of set pieces and rarely seen digital gates, the stargate had a distinct front and back. The inner wheel of glowing glyphs on the front, etched detailing on the back. In later seasons, the glyphs would appear on both sides. Eh?

This all stems from special effects (CGI) versus set pieces. It's far easier to screw up on the computer than with full-size set pieces.

It's a production error that pops up from time to time.

This image is from 'The Queen' and it's back to being 9. Best not to put much thought into it.
