This one was a lot better than last week's. It felt very Cloverfield, but I liked it. And Rekha Sharma did a great job.

It was a great episode for everyone but Will (as usual, they just can't make that boy interesting.) I liked Helen's trick on the cameraman when he was eavesdropping, and Ashley's girlishness, and Henry opening up. Very good character moments.

My only problem with this ep is how predictable it was. But other than that, it was kind of cool.

Yeah, Ashley literally lost her first date since who knows when (ever?) and poor Henry, Magnus will never let him call that reporter! :( Although maybe better for H. She was wackadoo.

Really good episode tonight. A major improvement on last week's, at least IMO.

I feel kind of sad for Ashely too. She seemed really happy about the possibility of a nice, normal date. I knew that was going to happen though with him, and what the reporter was going to try and do at the end.

This ep was middle of the road for me, it was not bad, not great, but I didn't hate it. It was good to see Henry in the field and not stuck back at the Sanctuary. The ending was pretty good, and I loved that little twist when that Cylon er um reporter tried to set up a broadcast.

One flawed about this episode was how did they contain the 2nd bug thingy? I must of missed the explanation.

I like how the team are becoming one. They are starting to trust eachother and you can see the bond growing stronger. I hope we get some nice character moments in the coming eps.

So does anybody have a huge can of Raid?? :p

Overall 7.5/10

Next episode looks really exciting, I cannot wait!

Hey y'all, I just finished Instinct and it was wicked ;). Not a masterpiece like Requiem, but it was still good ;). The episode starts in the point of view of a TV camera, camera guy Zach and this TV reporter (I can't remember her name :P) were filming and trying to get an idea of what was going on. I thought it was interesting have 99% of the episode shot on steady cam, it had a Trailer Park boy feel to it. Anyway, the TV reporter and Zach, let's just call her Rekha (That's the actress's name :P). After police officer tells them to scram, they find a way to sneak into the warehouse where all the action is happening, and they find a few dead bodies in there after some blood from one of the victims falls on Rekha face, and then they get a glimpse of the abnormal in the warehouse.

I won't bore you with details, so I'll keep it light :), anyway, after the opening credits, we find them wondering around a bit, and then one of the workers of the warehouse grabs them and pulls them out of sight, he warns them to get out, and he throws himself out in the open to get the creatures attention so they can escape, they make a run for it, but Zach falls, and the creature gets the worker. Afterwards, they meet up with the team, and for the first time, Henry's with them, he makes it clear several times throughout the episode it's his first field mission, and he's trying to prove he can do it. I liked how Helen kept telling him he's doing a good job, I can it meant a lot to him. When the team saw them of course Helen and the team are surprised to see that they're being filmed, Helen tries to ask them to leave, but Rekha convinces them to let her and Zach stay, and to keep filming. Helen takes charge and them what to do, and what to film, that's my girl, taking charge ;). Well, one of my girls, next to Amanda and Sam ;). I also loved how when Helen yelled at Zach and told him to stop filming them, and she even put her hand in front of the camera, and how she made those faces on camera were also funny, like she was annoyed with them http://i425.photobucket.com/albums/pp337/Rocky89_03/sam_whacko.gif.

I loved how when Rekha was fixing her make-up (Something you'd never see Amanda do :samanime20:) she told Zach to zoom in on the team and check what they were doing, Helen warms them that the creature is behind them and Zach jumps and looks around, then when he calms down, he sees Helen right in front of them, and she warns them not to eaves drop again. That part made me laugh :D. Anyway, throughout the episode the team kept moving around the warehouse looking for the creature, and they had to hurry because the police were coming, and they kept finding clues on what it is, and how to deal with it, then they find the worker who helped Rekha and Zach, and he was badly hurt. They split up to go look for more clues, Zach goes with Will and Ashley, while Helen and Henry stay behind to help the worker. Will, Ashley and Zach head towards an office to find the shipping manifest, while they do that, Zach puts the moves on Ashley, asking her out and such :P. Will finds where another crate is that could help stop the creature. They find it, and they find eggs inside . They realize it must have creature must gone along for the ride to protect it's young. Then for some reason, Zach tells Ashley he thinks Helen's weird . I'm like "How dare you call the queen weird!".

Helen calls them back because the worker is having seizure because of the creatures attacks. He dies, and Rekha tells them she's never seen anyone die before, and Helen tells them they got what they came for, and that this isn't a game. Yeah Helen ;). Anyway, long story short, they find a way to trap the creature in the crate, and shut the door, but then they soon discover that there's another one loose inside the warehouse, their able to stop that quickly, but not before it kills Zach, it's sad to because he and Ashely were starting to get along :(. Helen walks over to him, and he's just lying with his face down on his own blood, with his reflection in the blood.

Back at the Sanctuary it's the first time in the episode that's not on steady cam. Rekha's there trying to convince to give them the tape, and she promised to edit out anything about them and the creature, Helen gives her the tape out of trust ;). In Rekha's office, we see her on the phone chatting with someone (Probably her boss) and she tells them that tape will launch her career. Before she played the tape I kept thinking something bad was gonna happen, I thought the Cabal was going to show up or something, but what happened was truly unexpected :). When Rekha played the tape, Helen appeared on screen and said "Nice try", and a few other things telling Rekha what happens when she lies, and Helen even wished her luck with her career, then Helen got a remote, pushed stop and then the screen turned black. The End ;).

As Helen was talking a huge smile was on my face, I couldn't believe Helen got the last laugh, and when it was over I was like "You go girl." http://i425.photobucket.com/albums/pp337/Rocky89_03/Helen_claps.gif

great ep! :D

MUCH better than last weeks, even though i liked the helen/dad stuff. just a better ep all around.

zack! :(

and ashley was actually interested in going out with him... that should clue you in right there that he wouldn't make it. :p

LOVED how helen knew the reporter woman was going to reneg on their deal. ha! ;) (i didn't see that coming, though. i thought she was sincere)

question: do you think this was green screen, or where they actually in a warehouse?

i was afraid all that shakey camera work would do me in, but it didn't.

we've really had quite a variety of different types of eps so far. the only weak one of the bunch has been last week's 'warriors', but that's to me.

i'm looking forward to seeing the helen screen caps from this! :D

oh, and i'm LOVING helen's accent! i'm soooo glad amanda insisted helen stay british. i've never had a prob with it, but it's sounding more pronounced to me, which is great because i love an english accent. :p :D

why does will call helen 'magnus' instead of helen?

too bad about zack... :(

*tries not to think there's only two eps left... tries hard. really hard... *

i'll start the countdown to season 2 soon! :p

looool at the reporter cylon chick. The episode was a bit meh, the cameraman was a noob (deserved to get owned tbh. If you were that freaked out about the monster, maybe you should have worried a bit less about filming and a bit more about not getting owned). Also, how did Magnus' team get themselves and a shipping crate out of a warehouse full of dead SWAT, and which was surrounded by cops? :S

Having just had the pleasure in viewing Instinct...I would just like to say that while I enjoyed it a lot more than last weeks episode, I did find some scenes rather slow. In all honesty, I really didn't think much of the reporter. The camera guy...I felt sorry for him.
I loved Ashley...I loved how smitten she became of Zach...and how smitten he was of her...cute!!
Helen was good...I was just surprised that she allowed the two to follow...and while I do understand why...I was still surprised that she allowed it to happen...or even continue after the other fella died.
I loved the scene where she came up behind them and asked them to not eavesdrop...that was just a classic!!
Also loved the end with Helen on the screen saying "Nice try!".
One of my fave moment s was when they caught the first beastie...they all seemed rather pleased with themselves...I loved the way they seemed so jubilant...I hope we get more moments like that!
Overall, it did manage to keep me surprised to a somewhat biggish deal! :D
I did kinda yelp...but just a little one...when the creature was behind them...that was really cool!
I'd give it an 8/10. Well...maybe an 8.5/10! :P

awesome episode

8.5/10, didnt think i would like the first person thing they had going but it was really well done kudos :)

i really thought helen was sincere in letting the journalist take that footage, glad i was wrong

any1 notice the subtle sg-1 reference this weeks episode? (ie ashley loving plan b)

maybe the creatures that look like species 8472 were camra shy, they seemed to have it in for zack the camra guy

This was a great team episode. I wouldn't put it on the same level as "The Five" or "Requiem", but it was a definite improvement from last week.

I loved the team interaction here, as well as the individual performances. It's Henry's first time on a mission, he's nervous and wants to do it right, and I felt it was a good touch when he offered to take the injured guy outside, because he recognized how far his experience will let him go, and he shouldn't push his luck.

Also I noticed the contrast from beginner Will, to Will now. He went from, this is impossible/I don't know how to take the gun's safety off, to confident, capable and reliable team member (which ties nicely to his growth over the season, especially the way he acted in Requiem)

Poor Ashley. I assume she doesn't have much time to go out and meet "normal" guys... and when she does meet someone, he ends up dead. :(

And definitely my favorite part - Helen. :D The way she handled it all, and especially her interaction with the news crew. Starting from "it's behind you/don't eavesdrop again", the talk with the reporter after the worker died "this is what you came here for", and of course the final scene. Don't mess with the boss. :p

Sharma was amazing in her guest performance, and I wonder if we'll hear from her character again in the future.

Favorite shot, the team after they trapped the creature in the container.

There was just one thing that didn't work for me. The guy at the beginning telling the reporters that he'll draw the creature's attention, so that they can escape. I don't know why, it just didn't fit in somehow.

Again for those interested, the caps from this ep (they're not the best, since the camera was shaking all the time)

I guess I'm pretty much going to agree with everyone. Definitely a solid episode, mainly for the team work and as always Helen. What can I say, Helen was Helen and in fine form. Loved her interactions with the reporters, esp. the "it's behind you" moment. She just said it from where she was, knowing they were picking up the conversation. Great stuff. And she showed her concern for the guy in the warehouse who didn't make it & then the camera guy. I didn't really think she'd trust the reporter in the end & I was thinking "if they end it with the reporter either being reformed or Helen being tricked I'll be mad." I needn't have worried. DK knows Helen & that she wouldn't be taken in that easily.
Loved Ashley's line about Helen lighting up like Christmas morning over the discovery. :D

I like the way they worked the character moments into the overall episode. No big revelations re: Helen and Will, but good moments nonetheless-- but a bit more insight into Ashley. Nicely played, I thought, by EU.

Sally, I think Will calls her Magnus b/c Helen would seem too familiar--Magnus is more respectful but less formal the Dr. Magnus. My theory anyway.

I liked it. I wasnīt sure about it and it took some time to get used to it. I donīt like this shaky camera style. Zach was really annoying at first but how he started to flirt with Ashley, it was OK.
I liked how Will handled the situation - itīs a nice character development since episode 1.
But I will probably always love Henry :D I donīt understand why Ryan Robbins isnīt between the main cast because he is just great.
I loved the ARG in the beginning :D

The trick in the end was predictable but nice. :)

I am so sorry that Sanctuary has only 13 episodes. Now, when SGA and BSG are going to end, Sci-Fi really needs some hit.

I thought this was a fun episode, I too wasn't sure about the way it was shot at first, but it really worked! I got used to the camera shot and Zack talking behind it. I liked seeing the team work together in the field, and Henry being nervous about it being his first time :) Ashley and Zack, I thought was cute, at first I thought she was just humouring him; I liked it that she was serious, and we see that yes Ashely is a 'normal' 23 year old with her own insecurities about dating. It's just too bad Zack didn't make it :(

I"m not sure if the reporter was something new to Helen having to deal with, or if she's dealt with many just like her. I think Helen was spot on, having to deal with the giant insect and the reporter (not sure which one was worse :P )

Even though the camera shots were shakey, the episode went smoothly from the gripping edge of your seat bug hunt, to the ending scene, where we find out they were watching the tape. I really liked the way they did that.

And of course no one puts anything over on Helen...she's been around the block a few times ;)

Loved-
The way it was shot, the use of single takes for a few of the scenes rahter than chopping about.
The ARG at the start... took me a second to realise that was what i was looking at.
Ashley's bike just randomly placed outside during the teaser.
Zack :( shame they killed him.
Ashley's look just before Zack's untimely demise
Her lock picking skills

Not so sure about-
How in the blazes did the team kil the second bug then get past the surrounding cops with the container?

Re- on location or green screen.....

They did film a vast amount on location in the warehouse... but some stuff was done on set with green screen, the small room with the bitten guy was a set with a green screen outside the door.... didn't pick up anything else being green screen though.

sharing a couple more things i enjoyed:

loved helen tricking zack that the creature was behind them or something, and then said about not liking to be eavesdropped on. :D

Funny...I was thinking the same thing today at work...Helen has obviously picked up a lot of skills as she's been around a lot longer than most...well ok, all of us!!:P But one would expect her to be prepared for just about anything after all she has lived through.
I love her reaction when they caught the mother bug...so, she still gets excited when she bags one!!! Go Helen!!:D

Forgot to add my favorite Henry bit:
After the reporter kisses him, says "call me" and leaves, Henry tries to be all nonchalant and then does that little jump and yells "awesome!". That had me laughing for a good minute. :P
Actually, probably my fave moment of the ep, but then I'm a sucker for Henry.
Otherwise, I loved the Ashley/Zack interation and how quickly she melted for him. Bittersweet.

Good ep. I was hoping Zach woulda made it; I had this idea that maybe he would delete the footage before Stacey(?) used it.
I thought maybe the worker guy was going to turn out to be a Cabal agent (you know, get an inside guy at the warehouse to pick up the eggs) it would have explained how the critter didn't kill him right off. And I was glad they didn't do the "bug implanted it's eggs in people" thing; that gets old real fast.

I noticed the bug had an effect on Zach's camera; I also thought that perhaps exposure to the bug might erase the HD, or they would end up using Zach's camera as a detector/bait for the critter!

So, the Cabal in importing killer mantisoid eggs AND turning Profilers into mini-hulks? What is their game, anyway?

Having two bugs running around made all of it make more sense: The one that got fried ran off to heal, bug #2 stepped up and attacked again. Bug #2 gets hit with tranq darts, #1 comes back out while #2 shrugs it off. To us, it looks like nothing hurts the bug(s), but it's all working, just not that we can see.

Ok, so we all saw that Stacey(who looked so hot in that suit!)was going to double cross the team, but what if she hadn't? She would have needed to edit that footage to complete her part of the deal (even though I doubt you could erase all evidence of the team), and if she wasn't a back stabbing glory hound, she would have thought Magnus had screwed HER! Then her next call woulda been to the cops. ("Yes, that old church on the edge of town, officer. They travel all over the place bringing 'people' for 'treatment'. They even have a guy that makes special weapons for them. And, they have a private sub? Yes, I do think they might be terrorists. Just let me know when you perp walk them out, ok?")
OH, and it looks like people don't know about abnormals (or, at least Zach didn't).
Still, a great episode. Too bad it's all over in 3 weeks. (Then it's BSG,and who knows what else)

Yeah, my eyeballs were getting a little freaked out in this one too. I'm pretty sure this is a one-off, though, so we won't have to worry.

One interesting thing that this ep raised for me was the fact that it seems more and more people are finding out about the Sanctuary. I wonder if this is normal for Helen or if this is a new and problematic issue for our team to deal with?

LOVED Ashley's lock picking skills. :D At first mention I was reminded of Sam Carter's expertise in this area and thought it a nice throw back. What I didnt expect though was how she managed it. I laughed out loud with it.

My favorite line, "I can pick that." (followed by the smash as she blows the incubator contraption lock) hehe..sweet.

The way this ep was filmed was bothering the heck out of me though. Very nice idea. I can appreciate their desire to do something different. I did feel like grabbing the camera away about halfway through though as I felt I could do a better job of keeping the thing steadier. :P

Poor Ashley. I wonder why she doesnt get many dates. Is it that she's such a 'workaholic' with little time for romance or is it that she feels she's not worthy of anyone's affection for some reason. She's certainly beautiful enough imo.

The 'bug' reminded me of a walking stick...though of enormous proportion of course. Anyone seen one of these before?

Pretty good ep overall and Yay that Helen got the last laugh.

Reasonable episode, better than Warriors.

I too immediately wondered how on earth they where going to get the container out of there with the police/SWAT on the outside. It's not like they could have left it there intending to pick it up after the sweep, in case the cops searched it!

I also didn't like the warehouse guy role that much. It's a smart person that studies their enemy's movements, and like he did, work out it's operating method. After all he saw it kill his collegues and probably realised that mindless panic would only get him killed and that he'd stand more chance of survival to be calm and think, but to then just go "hey i'll sacrifice my life for you 2 who have recklessly come in here only for the story, and have no intention of helping anyone else trapped in here" was a bit off.

I did expect Amy to double cross them, after all given that she was more interested in the story getting the scoop on the monster and the Sanctuary would have been too much of a temptation to her.

Well, I don't watch the show you mention, but having the alien/creature/ whatever be right behind them is a device from time immemorial. I thought it was effectively done, though.

I thought the warehouse guy was setting them up; that door was close enough that he coulda made it. The only distraction he woulda needed was to knock some stuff down, or some shelves over, or set off a fire alarm.

But I thought it was brave of him to offer himself as a plot device ;), and then to add another level of 'crap' to the situation. (actually, did tptb need to add 'neurotoxins' to the list of things for this monster? It was already super fast, strong, able to climb walls and hide silently. Poison just seems like over kill....)

Oh man the shaky cam! As mush as I appreciate what they tried to do in this ep, I got so dizzy around half-way through I had to give it up as I was literally close to vomitting. :(
A movie called "Cloverfield" was made in the same way, everything that was seen was filmed with a hand camera by one man. Something very different and interesting. I loved this ep (again), the story was good and exciting, I felt sorry for Zack and would have liked to know how did they manage to eliminate the other creature and get out of the building.

I also didn't like the warehouse guy role that much. It's a smart person that studies their enemy's movements, and like he did, work out it's operating method. After all he saw it kill his collegues and probably realised that mindless panic would only get him killed and that he'd stand more chance of survival to be calm and think, but to then just go "hey i'll sacrifice my life for you 2 who have recklessly come in here only for the story, and have no intention of helping anyone else trapped in here" was a bit off.

that guy was the only part of the ep i didn't care for either. the one scene, where he's dying/foaming at the mouth: i didn't care for the way it was done. had a 'slight' cheesy feel to it.

but that's the only thing i didn't like.

Woo, I’m back from a lovely Caribbean cruise plus some sightseeing in Florida with the family, and the first thing I make sure to do when I got home was to catch up on the Sanctuary I missed last week. :D

I agree with what several people have said that I thought this was a really good team episode, the first time really I think we get to see the team (minus Bigfoot :() working together like a fully-functioning unit. I really enjoyed seeing that teamwork, coordinating strategy, laying down covering fire for each other and backing each other up, and then that great celebration moment when they bag the first creature. I also loved that they still had some tensions within the team, like Will and Ashley's exasperation that Helen still wanted to capture the creature alive. Teamy goodness all the way. :)

The action bits were a tad predictable, especially the second bug, but I really enjoyed all the character moments. Seeing Will’s growth from forgetting the safety in Fata Morgana to competently handling a gun. I also liked that he tried to comfort the reporter even as Ashley, Helen, and Henry continued their shooting.

I loved Henry's nervousness on being on his first real field mission, seeing him trying to have confidence in himself and his abilities, and still knowing when to not push too far by offering to take the warehouse guy to the van. His interactions with the reporter were also great, as was the 'awesome' after she kissed him at the end. I think they've done a fantastic job of making Henry a fully-realized character with the limited time they were given this season, and I can't wait to see what they do in season 2.

I also enjoyed Ashley's reaction to the camera guy asking her out. At first I did think she was humoring him when she asked for a raincheck, because up 'till then I thought she was just ticked at having to deal with him and the reporter while also dealing with the bug. But the sort of shy smile she had when she said she did like him changed my mind and it felt more like she just wasn't used to guys asking her out. Which of course made it all the more tragic when he died soon after that. :(

Helen was fantastic as she usually is, and I especially enjoyed the final bit with the camera harddisk as well as faking the reporter and camera guy out when they were eavesdropping. I honestly believed the reporter had had a change of heart when she was asking for the footage because of how guilty she seemed about getting her camera guy killed. So I didn't expect the twist in the final scene but it was great to see. As others have said, you just can't play Helen. :)

The shaky cam style got a bit much sometimes, but I think it worked for the episode and I'm a total sucker for long takes with little to no cuts. I also really enjoyed Rehka Sharma as the reporter, not the least because she's Indian :), and I kinda hope she becomes a semi-reoccurring character rather like Julia Donovan in Stargate.

Phew that's a long post for Christmas Day, but I've missed being able to ramble about Sanctuary for the past week or so. :o :)

So Merry Christmas to all, I'm off for some more hot chocolate and cookies! :D

EDIT: Whoa, just realized that this is my 400th post and I've gone from a Death Glider Pilot to a Second Lieutenant. I rather liked the goa'uld labels and was looking forward to someday become a system lord. :D

Yeah, that was kind of out of left field. I was sort of rooting for the abnormal to get the annoying Amy but I knew that wouldn't happen. :D
I wish the creature had eaten Amy too...it was her fault she and Zac were in the warehouse...silly girl!

I'm figuring that Cloverfield is the Blair Witch Project??? Or is it something else??? Coz than I have no idea what you're all talking about!! :D

Definitely not what I thought it was....never seen Cloverfield...am I missing anything special??

It's nothing that special, just another monster movie. :D I liked it, the presentation and no music score was something different. The beginning was quite boring, but as the action began I didn't notice was there music or not. I don't know what kind of movies you prefer, but "Cloverfield" had its moments, an enjoyable movie. Just like with "Instinct" I had no problems with nausea or such, then again I watched it at home.

Not a big fan of the shaky camera stuff, but otherwise this was a very good episode.

Liked seeing the human side of Ashley, her interaction with Zack was sweet and I was really sorry to see him bite the dust.

Liked the team feel to this and liked seeing Henry on his first op. But then I like seeing Henry anytime.

1. Reporter angle seemed a bit cliched to start with but did have some original elements. Liked the Amy-Zack interplay.

2. Interesting to see an ep from a not-very-sympathetic viewpoint.

3. Really had though Amy had a change of heart, just made me dislike her more when she didn't.

4. However, Helen knows 'all' the tricks! :)

Solid ep, even if it took me till now to catch it on ITV catchup!

Yes, that was the same prop used for ARGs. Damien Kindler produces both shows, so they likely borrow a lot of props from their bigger-budget uncle.

and I was about to say everything that is written here ^ :p

Plus the abnormal was really cool :D

And... while I naturally didn't like Amy for trying to cross the team I kinda hope we see her again.

I actually hope we don't, but I have a feeling they may decide she makes another good enemy for the Sanctuary.

Needed bigger guns but still one of my 3 favorite episodes.

This was by far one of the best episodes ever. What a gutsy move to have to shoot like that. Everything was in long takes and if one person messed up they had to start over. I thought the two guest actors of Amy and Zack were great. They fit into the story with easy.

Great team work, not so much just MAGNUS, MAGNUS! I was so happy to see Henry in the field, nervous and trying to do a good job. It was an awesome story for him. Also I loved the glimsp we saw of Ashley and how she does not date much because she is so busy.

Was it just me or did will seem green when that guy was asking her on a date. I mean he kinda laughed at her, but why was he being so nosey!

I loved the commentary on this episode, its prolly the best one on the whole DVD set.

I thought this was one of the better episodes of the first season. Kind predictable though, but entertaining nonetheless. I liked the moment between Ashley and Zack.

Instinct was the only Season 1 episode I didn't like. The reporter (who should have been working with the tabloids) really turned me off.

so...instinct. what's there to say about instinct?

nice to see them from another angle, the reporter was annoying, cliched red shirt syndrome for zach, interesting bug....why didn't helen just call her cop contacts to call them off?

wasn't horrible, the shaky cam bugged me (no pun intended) and while I can appreciate the experimentation, didn't do much for me

i liked this episode, but i hated the camera thing. it would have been better if they just showed in normally. sure you'd loose the idea that you don't see zach's face until he dies but who cares.

it was great to see the sanctuary team from an outside prospective. and it was great when maganus owns the reporter at the end.

I know I'm in the minority because I liked how the episode was filmed. I'll agree it had a little too much movement in some places but overall I liked the different approach.

The reporter was very annoying but at least as blueray put it she was owned by Magnus at the end. Oh and we did see Zac at the very beginning of the episode.
