    Er... Radiation?

After McKay shut off the Atero device, why did he and Daniel take off their helmets? They should have been instantly killed by radiation. A room full of radiation doesn't vanish simply because it's source was turned off.

Well that entirely depends on the type of radiation being used. That all is lethal is humans.

The point is, they had to wear the suits, because the radiation is lethal. Since when does radiation dissipate in seconds?

I thought they had to wear the suits for protection from the lightning mainly.

because the writers have blooped up this episode!!!

          * todd used the dedalus as a weapon when he could have used the 302's
          * travellers ship destroys asgard ship
          * caldwell no where to be seen when he's in command of the ship
          * destroying the attero device when it could have been useful later on after disabling the stargates through the virus like in sg1
          * ronan becoming dumb
*mckay and daniel taking off there helmets when they knew there was massive radiation in the room...what was daniel doing in the room anyway ?

Daniel says it out right before they go into the room. He goes with McKay in case HE is struck by lightning and Daniel has to pull the crystal.

Todd was quite angry, so I don't have issues with him loosing objectivity and sacrificing the Daedalus. It was overkill, but that's Wraith for you.

What's wrong with the Traveler ship destroying a few Asgard ships? Remember, these Asgard left the Asgard galaxy back when Atlantis was populated by Ancients. They lost their original ships, so they had to build new ones. Since these new ships were rarely used, it's not unreasonable for them to be flawed.

Indeed, where was Caldwell? He's one of my favorite recurring characters, so he was missed. All that was needed was dialogue saying that he got his butt kicked for trying to escape the brig and was in sickbay.

I'm with Woolsey for destroying the device, but did they have to destroy the entire complex?

Daniel was McKay's backup incase McKay got hit by lighting. Ironically, Daniel got hit by lightning. Yes, taking off their helmets was stupid. Realistically, they would have died, become terminally ill, or required a very painful decontamination.

I would assume that they figured that Ancients were so much more advance that the room had features to make the radiation disapate almost immediately.

Plus it was kind of cool seeing McKay and Jackson's faces while they were actually in the suits. It would most likely be the only creative way for the writers to visually connect the characters to the scene. I don't think the scene with Daniel getting hurt and McKay's talking to him would have worked nearly as well if they had left the helmets on!

Yea, I agree with rosehawk, the scene would not have owrked as well if their faces were covered.

They could have showed their faces inside the helmets.

Unless the radiation alters the atoms' nucleus (only neutron and high energy gamma radiation do that) the room won't become radioactive. As long as the radiation is coming from the device operation shutting it down should stop the radiation.

                        Yes, it does.

Radioactive radiation works in much the same way that Light works. If you went into an over-lit room in dark glasses to be protected from the blinding light, then the blinding light was switched off, you'd be safe to take your glasses off straight away, right?

LOL. Not very well with those helmets.

What about when Daniel was iradiated in "Meridian?" When he came back to Earth, Carter told the medical team not to touch him, because he was still radioactive.

In Meridian, Daniel was in the room when the device explode and was saturated in radioactivite particles and became contaminated. He was radioactive and there would be potiental for cross contamination at that point if others touch him without protection.

In the Lost Tribe, the suits protected Jackson and McKay from getting contaminated while the device was in use.
