    Younger Generations?

I think of them like this:

    - Many are addicted to social networking sites and their own close-knit world of friends. So their ideas and way of learning usually flow from and around this world.

    - Would rather do things like drink with friends at clubs than miss partying to watch an "uncool" or "socially damaging" and cheesy Star Trek-like, Sci Fi show late at night.

    - Many are illiterate (or mentally stunted with understanding word) thanks to the older generations not caring and investing in their educations. So those geeky moments on SGA which usually involve long technical terms.....gone in SGU.

    - Would rather spend late nights chasing a root, than watch sci fi.

    - Haven't been really exposed to the world of ideas and thought (bad education and bad parenting)... and so they would have a hard time understanding and relating to a far flung flight of imagination-driven fantasy.

    - Have got a million other.. quick, easily gratifying, and more entertaining things to do...

Either the Producers of this show have finally lost it, or they have got some serious World Class talent on their hands who possess the abilities to crack open a new audience... to open up an audience who will mostly not even give these types of shows a nanosecond of an honest chance.

Even I have written better concepts than SGU. Which is sad.

This SGU thingy sounds weak. I haven't even heard one thing about it that I like yet. It sounds like a glossed up, soulless and empty franchise... aimed at people who are not going to appreciate it.

Hell, I'd love to be proven wrong...then maybe I'll start watching TV again when Atlantis ends.

    Did I miss something out?

Hiya, first post here, I actually registered to respond to this.

As part of this 'younger generation' at sixteen I found your comments to be quite insulting.

1, yes it's true that a lot of people have social networking sites, I myself have one. But addiction is a long way from the truth for the majority of social network users. The type of information, our ideas and learning are not only equal to your apparent generation but far surpass it. I'm not trying to cause offense, but information access has vastly increased.

2, Some, a few maybe, might stay out at parties, but I personally as well as a number of friends, make time for important shows like Stargate.

3, Illiterate? I'm not even going to respond to such an ignorant suggestion.

I have been exposed to shows like Stargate my entire life, so have numerous people my age. We grew up looking at the stars, being able to imagine a whole range of adventures and aliens, we don't lack imagination, but are infused with it.

Just trying to clear a few things up

    One thing I forgot,
While science fiction is a fantastic genre, and I encourage all to enjoy it, its usual fan base is the geeky teen. A title which I proudly support

Im 19 and while I my self and the poster above do not fit into the OP's statements, on the majority of people in our age group do fit a number of those statements, trying to make star gate appeal to them just won't work its not what they are looking for.

I my self have a facebook, I check it multiple times a day. Am I addicted? I also check my email, gateworld and google news. Most of the time its just to see what my HS friends are up to. Since I am in college I rarely get to see them .

So while some of your statements may have some truth, please understand it doesn't apply to all of us.

For the Illiterate statement, if thats any reference to the huge number of kids who run around saying "thats gay" natural selection should have taken them out along time ago.

        What is "chasing root"?

        And I'm 27, am I "younger"?

Also, I routinely record Atlantis to watch it later when I have a social engagement on a Friday evening rather than miss it to sit at home. Am I part of the problem? *gasp*

First off, I am a MAJOR Lurker, but saw this an had to respond. For future note, I am 17.

            - Many are addicted to social networking sites and their own close-knit world of friends. So their ideas and way of learning usually flow from and around this world.
While, yes, I use stuff like MySpace and Facebook, I am by no means am addicted. Like Diogenic said times have changed. We are all uber connected and we share information instantly. I don't know how I would get news and world information if I didn't have my internet connection.

            - Would rather do things like drink with friends at clubs than miss partying to watch an "uncool" or "socially damaging" and cheesy Star Trek-like, Sci Fi show late at night.
Never really have drank alcohol, or been to a party like that. All my friends know that I am Uber-Trekkie-Computer-Nerd and never have though that I am "uncool" or "socially damaged". Heck, I even have gotten some of them to watch it with me.

            - Many are illiterate (or mentally stunted with understanding word) thanks to the older generations not caring and investing in their educations. So those geeky moments on SGA which usually involve long technical terms.....gone in SGU.
While, some yes, don't give a rip about education, many of my friends, along with myself do. I read books, tech journals, anything I can get my hands on.

            - Would rather spend late nights chasing a root, than watch sci fi.
Wow...that's really ignorant. Just because you see nymphomaniac teens on TV doesn't mean we are all like that.

            - Haven't been really exposed to the world of ideas and thought (bad education and bad parenting)... and so they would have a hard time understanding and relating to a far flung flight of imagination-driven fantasy.

            - Have got a million other.. quick, easily gratifying, and more entertaining things to do...
I think that despite bad surroundings, there is a major resurgence of music, art, and classic ideas. Look how many people had never heard of Lord of the Rings before the movie. Look how many people pick up the book and read it since the movie came out.

Either the Producers of this show have finally lost it, or they have got some serious World Class talent on their hands who possess the abilities to crack open a new audience... to open up an audience who will mostly not even give these types of shows a nanosecond of an honest chance.

Well, The SG-1 Cast (Except for RDA and Don S. Davis) were only around 25 when they started.

            Just my two cents.

Oh, and Jefalla, a "root" is a euphemism to a certain anatomical part on the males of a species.

              yea the truth.

              1. yes i have a facebook, check it often, hell i'm on it right now, does that make me addicted? Also, i've taught myself a lot more then i learned at school here on my computer and t.v.
2.not all teens drink, the only trace of alcohol i've had in my life is a sample of champagne , most my friends don't like sci fi, i respect that and wouldn't force them to watch if they don't want to.
3.excuse me? do you really have the huutsfa to say that a lot of teens are illiterate? So i guess you aren't counting those who are in school because everybody in my school can read, and probably many places elsewhere.
              4.????????
              5. you can't get an education in imagination, you have to come up with that on your own, there are no external factors for that.
6.anybody has 1 million other things they can be doing at any moment, what makes teens so special?
maybe you haven't heard anything you liked but what have we heard? a basic story line, that's about it, it can always change............

Stargate probably has the most intellectual group of fans....maybe only second to fans of Numbers, because I have no idea what goes on in that show.

I was initially going to write a point-by-point rebuttal against the above, but it's not worth it.

I don't know you Caius, and I can't change your opinion. I'm not here to defend my peers. And as a member of the "younger generation," as you put it, I can say that while some of the things you listed above apply to me, many of them do not. And I still watch Stargate, so even if the above items do apply, they are moot points, since, after all, I'm here on this message board talking about a franchise we are clearly both interested in.

A franchise that, next year when this show airs, will in fact be 15 years old. Crazy to think, no?

Clearly, not everyone is going to love Universe. Not everyone loved Atlantis either. Heck, I'm sure there are people out there who loved the movie but didn't even like SG-1 (and let's not forget, Michael Shanks was only 26 when he was cast as Daniel Jackson). Everyone has different tastes.

Every franchise will try to get more fans. That's how it lives and grows. A lot of fans view this as a "jumping off" point. Well, the producers are clearly doing what they can to make it a "jumping on" point for new fans.

I find it sad that people are actually hating this show, before it is even cast (and for goodness sake, the pilot is still being written!), simply because of the ages of some of the main cast.

I actually compare what I've seen of Universe to a series of books in the Star Wars franchise, the Young Jedi Knights. These were being written by Kevin J. Anderson and his wife, Rebecca Moesta. Both had been established writers of normal adult-level (as far as target demographic; not pornographic) material. They approached this 14-book series with the same maturity and themes that they did with any other work of theirs; only the stories happened with a younger cast of characters. And lo and behold, those characters grew on fans and the characters ended up becoming the main focus of future novels in the Star Wars franchise.

That's what Universe is going to be.

Also, it's not as if this concept were simply thrown together. Brad Wright has talked about this concept publicly for well over a year before it actually came to fruition. Who knows how long he had been privately mulling over the concepts prior to that. That's a lot of time to prepare and work out what to do and what can work and what can't before actually investing money and effort into the project.

It's still the same creative time that's brought us SG-1 and Atlantis. The ages of the characters just happen to be a little younger.

Even if the characters are immature at the beginning, the arc of the show will surely be about their growth and development as people. Every series regular is a dynamic character. Anyone who's 25 when the show begins, assuming the show lasts 5 season, will be 30 by the time it ends.

Judge the final product. If you hate it then, fine. At least you gave it a shot.

I am not part of the "Younger Generation". I am 34 years old, I LOVE Science Fiction to death and I have for as long as I remember.

Now with that said. I don't think I can be as eloquent as the previous posters. But, I will try.

I have friends who range from 18 to over 90 years of age. I have met people who are spectacularly intelligent to out right dumber then dog crap. And I can tell you that it applies to all age groups, not just the 20 somethings on down.

When it comes to what you said about Stargate Universe I have to agree with the majority of what everyone has said in this thread. Just because TPTB are trying to appeal to a younger crowd does not translate to a show not being technically savvy, or dumber. What it translates to is trying to get a younger crowd to start watching it. At no time did TPTB say that are just going to focus on the younger crowd.

Also let me add something else. I have been in the computer field (unofficially) since I was 8 years old. When I started poking around in computers to see how they work. And since then I have made a very excellent living off of technology. But, when I compare what I know to some of the younger people that are now entering the field. I feel like a complete and total moron.

The younger generations that are now entering into adult hood have been exposed to Technology all of there life, they are technologically inclined more so then me.

                      And to end this rant.

If you are going to judge a group of people because of a small percentage of people that can't spell their name, enunciate a word, basic mathematics and resort to crime for money. Then I would suggest you get to know these people before you judge them..

Also on that note, you have no write to criticize anyone about education if you can not spell a word correctly...
Spins and turns, angles and curves, the shape of dreams half remembered. Slip the surly bonds of Earth and touch the face of perfection. A perfect face, a perfect lace, find a perfect world for the end of Kara Thrace.
                      End of line.

If you are going to judge a group of people
As a 22 Year old, I know from experience that too many of my peers are intellectually stunted morons who live inside of their own boxes.

I remember bringing a copy of the classic Cheech and Chong:Up In Smoke to my High School years ago after I was asked by someone to do so. A whole class watched it on the television for about 25 minutes... and no one laughed once except for the part where the Big Joint appeared.

They didn't understand the funny dialogue, the characters, the gags, and the flavour of the movie. It was too much of a leap for them to jump. It didn't appeal to their world.

Not to say that all people of the younger generations are this way.

But there are definitely not enough to make this new SG series viable, imho.

And the characters seem cliche and flat... and only show potential to explore what's already been explored and beaten-to-death in TV already.

Targeted at a younger audience, or, more-of-the-same but targeted at an audience that they hope haven't seen this franchise yet?

Overall, everything about this SGU sounds off... like you feel and know that it's going to fail.

But hey, I could be wrong. But that's unlikely.

I'm 21 and I would have to agree with the OP.

If you read his post correctly you will see that he doesn't say that all of us are like this. He said MANY of us are.

I for one do have a MySpace. I may check it once or twice a day. Sometimes I won't even check it from day to day. I see many of my friends would rather sit on their MySpace refreshing their page instead of going for a walk, or going out for a meal or something like that. Unless of course it was a pre-arranged party.

I agree that unless something is "instant" it gets boring fast with people my age, as evident that the OC and 90210 get many, many more viewers then SGA.

Chasing a root? Well that's about 99% of the males I know from 15-25, about half of the girls that age I know too!

I sometimes wish my friends would grow up and stop being so immature and childish - or that I wasn't so "mature". Ignorance is bliss sometimes.

Though please remember not all young people are like this, I would have to say that 99% of them fit at least one of those categories. About 75% fit about 3 of them.

Ok im 17 and i disagree with most things you have said.

First off not everyone goes out to party's all the time. Im got enough friends and i go to one like once a month... which i might add is normal for like everyone i know!

Secondly we are not obssesed with a root we do have other things on out minds.

Yes we are all Illiterate... In fact i had to get my mum over here to read this out to me. Look at statistics mate the rate of Illiterate people are going down with each generation so i think you might be wrong there.

Not invested in the world of ideas and thought???? What are you on? Your just saying random things with no evidence to back it up. Of course our "world of ideas and thoughts" as you say it would be smaller than that of older generations but that is only because we have spent left time on the earth than you have. And it doesnt mean we wont watch the show.

Ohh and yes stargate is considered uncool by a lot of people... But who really cares? Im not that fussed about what people think of me and im a teenager, we're meant to be like that. Mayby it is you who should grow up if thts what you think is important.

To conclude all i want to say is you sir are an idiot!

So would people in any generation. This one is no exception. But don't for a minute think there aren't 30-90 year olds who act the same way.

That's a matter of taste. Not every kid from the 2000s is going to get all of the nuances from television and films from the 70s. Nor should they particularly be expected to.

Besides that, this was in high school. You're 22, how much have you grown and changed since high school? Surely your peers have done some growing up as well. Many do it at different paces.

What was released (my guess is that it was more than likely "leaked") was a casting breakdown. That's the very basic description given from casting director to talent agent/manager to match clients to roles. The language is written to be a little flat and open-ended. The casting part of the entertainment industry plays to types. "I'm looking for a girl next door type" or "I need a character mom," etc. This kind of writing is VERY TYPICAL.

It's up to the actors who are called in to audition to flesh out the particular character. An example I gave on another board: When Christopher Judge auditioned for Teal'c they were looking at all ethnicities. They wanted a strong warrior outsider type, but were open to different specifics past that. Then Mr. Judge got cast and fleshed the character out from there.

Any television show or film is a huge collaboration. There are a lot of overall factors, that, yes while being driven by one or a few individuals such as a director or producers, are being contributed to by many other people: designers, construction teams, writers, actors, VFX artists, etc. Shows live and die by any number of variables.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that many people hating on Universe now will second guess themselves once production gets underway and we start to get a better feel for the show as a whole.

And quite frankly, the fact that you're 22 demerits a lot of what you've been saying, especially when your first post referred to our generation (yours and mine) as "them," as if you were not included in that mix.
