Why couldn't they go through the gate underwater?

why did they have to wait 38 minutes for the gate to shut off instead of just diving and going through?

they were sitting on top of the active gate which was mostly covered in water. the gate stayed active because of the water pressure. shouldn's this mean that the water should have gone through the gate and transmitted to the Atlantis gate to be destroyed upon contact with the forcefield at the event horizon?
so couldn't they lower the shield for a moment and for the team to dive and go through with the water. after they're through Atlantis could raise the forcefield back. some water would go to the Atlantis control Room but so what?
are they afraid of a little water?

the only thing i can think of is that its because they were worried that the gate might not send them because the gate doesn't send something until its all in and because the water was unending the gate might have just stored them in the buffer until it was deactivated and then deleted them. but if that was the case why did Atlantis need to keep the shield up? they could lower it for a moment and if some water would go through that would mean the team can go through also.

That was a lot of water. Trust me a lot of water would get into the control room through a gate that wide, even in a few seconds, and it would be a pain in the ass to pump it out, plus all the tech in the control room, etc. Plus it wasn't that big a deal to wait for 38 minutes.
    My heart beats in 13/8.

if they timed it right they could have opened the shield for just a few seconds. the control room is pretty big and wouldn't get flooded too bad.
the ancient tech is probably water proof. and we know the city doesn't rust because it used to be underwater for thousands of years

In the SG-1 episode "Watergate" with Martina Sirtis where they go through to a sunken gate in a submarine, Carter mentions that the Stargate has precautions in place to not let certain things through. Water and air, for example. (This explains why when they dial a spacegate, there isn't a huge rush of air as it is sucked through the gate.)

They just conveniently forgot that for the sake of the story, though. And it did look kinda neat.

I remembered that episode, too, but I also remembered that it was speculation by Carter and that the water had special properties(don't remember exactly).

That "water" was alive and actively prevented itself from flowing through the gate.

That "water" also stopped the mini-sub, took over the minds of some Russians, and erased the memory of SG1 plus Troi (can't remember her character name on SG1) when it send them back (without the sub), remember?

Carter said that that is what she though, it was never proven.

Carter didn't know that the water was alive at that time, she was speaking about water in general.

It's the first time they saw a watergate afaik, and the indeed thought about it, not definately said.

Well they couldn't get through because the gateshield was active to prevent the gateroom from flooding.

And no this isn't like watergate:
Watergate --> energy emitted water entities --> Gate remains open nearly indefinitly

Shrine --> Water --> water moves though gate and keeps gate open for 38 minutes.

True! But, presumably they would turn on the shield to make it stop. But still, a lot of water would come through as the team tried to make their way in before the shield came up behind them.

I thought the the gate is always only a 1-way passage, and it is always pointed towards the direction of travel. I don't think there's ever been a scene where someone from the receiving end of the gate steps back and went thru the dialing gate.

How much water would have gotten through in those few seconds? Also should they have been registering shield impacts? Kind of like when something hits the Iris they can here the impact. Not sure the same thing happens with the shield, but wouldn't the water be impacting the shield?

Well, it is water, so there wouldn't be impacts so much as one continuous impact. So maybe we were seeing it.
