WCU hires new head of Stage and Screen Department, setting its sights on becoming national model for how to teach performing arts
By Michael Beadle

Excerpts:

At most universities, there’s the theatre department and there’s the film department — and never the twain shall meet.
………….
That’s part of the reasoning behind a recent change at Western Carolina University. Last summer, the departments of music, theatre, dance, art and design, and motion pictures and television production joined to form a new college — the College of Fine and Performing Arts. This summer, WCU hired Thomas Salzman from Sante Fe as the new head of the Department of Stage and Screen in a move most universities would never think of attempting. It may seem odd, but most academic institutions like to keep their arts programs compartmentalized. But if you talk with some of the faculty in the College of Fine and Performing Arts, uniting these arts programs may well put Western on the national map as a model campus for how the performing arts will be taught in the future.
……………….
Sholder is hoping to use that space to film a student television series next year. The idea is to offer students screenwriting classes this year with Terry Curtis Fox, an associate professor and Hollywood screenwriter and producer with credits that include “Hill Street Blues,” “JAG” and “Stargate SG-1.” Fox will teach students about developing a pilot and then one of those student scripts will be chosen to film as a TV series the following school year.
